Delray Under $50
Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene,
it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or
restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach
offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back
restaurants, and events for the whole family or
nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do
in Delray Beach in May for $50 or less.
Beer: helping me enjoy my
weekends since 2005.
Craft beer has maneuvered
its delicious way into the forefront
of the drinking world and
I’m super hoppy about it. Brewmasters,
I tip my tiny hat to you.
American Craft Beer Week is May
14 through 20 and in addition to
having the pick of the beer litter
from restaurants on the Avenue,
Delray is home to the Seventh Annual
Delray Beach Craft Beer Fest.
So, all IPA, porter, pilsner and stout
lovers unite because we have a mission
to show our local microbrewers
some appreciation. Held Friday, May
11 from 7:30 p.m. (general admission;
6:30 p.m. for VIP) to 10:30 p.m.,
you are invited to celebrate the art of a
well-crafted beer with a few thousand of
your local drinking buddies while you
indulge in all the hoppy and malty flavors
you love. You will enjoy unlimited
sampling of more than 100 craft brews,
international beers and ciders, food
stations (for purchase), wine tasting,
game area, photo booth, silent auction,
cash bar and live music. It’s like
a carousel of beer and the ride is never
ending. I’ll cheers to that. General admission is $40 and the proceeds
support community programs and outdoor concerts, so you’re basically
scratching your own future back. Just don’t drink and drive! The
Pavilion at Old School Square is located at 51 N. Swinton Ave. Please
Ask anyone and they’ll tell you the most important thing in life
is the relationships with family and friends. Maybe delicious
food and travel are a (very very) close second, but the close
relationships you make throughout life and the people who help
you up and keep you up are the best. That’s why you need to protect
your peeps! May is Family Wellness Month and Spodak Dental
Group is hosting a self defense class so you can learn how to protect
yourself and those with you. The Ladies FIRST Self Defense Class was
created and is taught by a decorated SWAT officer who has 20 years
of police experience and more than 35 years of combat training experience.
The system he teaches is reality-based and the strategies
and techniques are designed to work on the streets and not just in
the classroom. A woman is assaulted every two minutes so it is incredibly
important to protect yourself and those you love. The class
is designed to prepare women of various ages, athleticism, strength,
flexibility and body types to convince an attacker they have chosen
the wrong victim. Put simply, it is designed to save women’s lives. The
class is held Friday, May 11 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and is free so be sure to
attend and bring all your lady friends. Spodak Dental Group is located
at 3911 W. Atlantic Ave. Please call (561) 498-0050 or visit www.spodakdental.com
for more information or to RSVP.
When’s the last time you smiled? And not just at someone
in the elevator. If you need some investments in the smile
bank, plan to get some play with a play. May is National
Smile Month and our good friends at the Delray Beach Playhouse are
featuring Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf for our viewing pleasure.
This classic drama by Edward Albee is described as intensely witty,
consistently entertaining and completely absorbing. He made his explosive
debut in 1962 when Virginia Woolf became the most talked
about and controversial play on Broadway. Damned by some for its
explicit use of language and sexual themes, it was hailed by others as
the most brilliantly written examination of a marriage in the modern
theatre. The play takes place one night after a faculty meeting in a
small college when George and Martha (a middle-aged professor and
his wife) invite Nick and Honey (a new member of the faculty and
his wife) over for drinks and (what the older couple calls), “fun and
games.” What a night it turns out to be! The play is held Friday, May
18 through Sunday, June 3 and tickets are $30 per person. The Delray
Beach Playhouse is located at 950 N.W. Ninth St. Please visit www.
delraybeachplayhouse.com or call (561) 272-1281 for more information
or to purchase tickets.
