Reverend April Y. M. Hearn
“I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise
shall continually be in my mouth!” Psalm 34:1
serves as the theme for the life and service of
Rev. April Hearn. A vibrant worshiper, mentor,
educator, life-long student and lover of God,
she is a sought-after preacher, key-note
speaker and conference presenter for people
of all ages and backgrounds.
Rev. April, or “Rev. A.”, as she is lovingly referred to by the congregation of New Prospect, was
licensed in 2000 in Little Rock, AR. and later ordained to the Gospel Ministry at New Prospect
Missionary Baptist Church, Detroit, MI. by her beloved pastor, the late Rev. Dr. Wilma R.
Johnson in 2009.
After 10 years as a middle school science teacher, the Lord opened the door for Rev. April to
enter into ministry full-time at New Prospect. Rev. April Hearn faithfully served under the
leadership of Rev. Dr. Wilma R. Johnson for 15 years. During that time, she functioned as the
Pastor of Children and Youth, Administrative Assistant to Pastor Johnson and coordinator of
ministry events and community projects. Rev. April currently serves as a full-time member of
the pastoral staff at New Prospect.
She has earned a B.S. Degree in Secondary Education from Grambling State University in
Grambling, Louisiana, a Masters in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College in Detroit, MI,
and a Master of Divinity Degree from Ecumenical Theological Seminary, also in the city of
Detroit. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Ministry degree, also from Ecumenical
Theological Seminary.
Combining her professional aptitude and spiritual calling, she founded Life In HD, Inc. in 2015.
Rev. April believes that there is a BRIGHTER, CLEARER AND MORE VIVID existence awaiting
everyone who dares to see themselves from a NEW and more INDEPTH point of view!
A strong advocate for speaking words of affirmation to one’s own Spirit, she can often be heard
declaring, “I’m a thermostat… not a thermometer!” Rev. April Hearn’s impactful and relevant
preaching, and teaching, affords occasions to bless many.

The Wall of Honor
Hope’s Wall of Honor is an everlasting tribute to our Veterans. It was designed and
donated to Hope by Brother Sid Taylor, a US Marine, Vietnam combat veteran and
beloved member of Hope. It is a memorial tribute to commemorate the sacrifices our
veterans have made for our country. We are grateful to Sid and his family for blessing
us all with the beautiful Wall of Honor.

April is Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month
Prevention and Early Detection Can Improve Your Quality of Life
Join us every second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM in the library as we support those
persons (including caregivers) going through the cancer experience
WHAT IS ESOPHAGEAL CANCER? Cancer that occurs in the esophagus­- a long, hollow tube
that runs from your throat to your stomach. Cancer is the second leading cause of death for African
Americans. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of esophageal cancer for African
Americans.
SYMPTOMS: Difficulty swallowing, fatigue, frequent choking while eating, indigestion or heartburn,
coughing or hoarseness, unintentional weight loss
RISK FACTORS: Drinking alcohol or very hot liquids, chewing tobacco or smoking, difficulty
swallowing, eating foods preserved in lye such as some olive recipes, eating few fruits and
vegetables, having (GERD), being obese, having precancerous changes in the cells of the
esophagus, being male and between the ages of 45 and 70.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOURSELF AND ENCOURAGE OTHERS? There is no routine
screening for this -- TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR if you have any of the above symptoms.

Missions' Food Pantry Stock Up
Hope, we need your help to stock our pantry to feed our neighbors in
need for the upcoming year. Your donations can be placed in the
Missions food barrels near the kitchen and Room 24 anytime during
the week.
The following items are of special need:
Cereal, canned tuna and salmon, canned fruits and
vegetables, canned soups, rice, beans,
mashed potatoes, boxed macaroni and cheese, pancake
mix, syrup, canned pasta meals, canned chili, peanut butter,
jelly and juice.
Last year Hope blessed approximately 400 families with a food
basket!
