Model 2 dissertation. Students may choose to carry out a<br />

more traditional dissertation involving the appropriate written<br />

presentation of original research carried out by the student under<br />

the guidance of the student’s dissertation committee chair.<br />

Dissertation Defense. The dissertation defense will be the<br />

same for both dissertation models and will consist of an oral presentation<br />

of the dissertation material to the doctoral committee<br />

and a publicly invited audience.<br />

Award of the Degree. The Doctor of Philosophy degree in<br />

language and communicative disorders will be awarded jointly by<br />

the Regents of the <strong>University</strong> of California and the Trustees of<br />

The California <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> in the names of both institutions.<br />

Financial Support. Funding for graduate students cannot<br />

be guaranteed, although every effort will be made to provide students<br />

with some form of support through faculty grants, graduate<br />

teaching associateships, research assistantships, or<br />

scholarships. The program endeavors to provide financial support<br />

that will enable all students to devote full time to study and<br />

research training. Financial support will be awarded consistent<br />

with the policies of the Graduate Divisions at each campus.<br />

Tuition and fees will be determined in accord with extant policies<br />

at the campus in which the student is matriculated in a given<br />

year.<br />

Credentials<br />

The Department of Communicative Disorders offers academic<br />

and practica coursework applicable to two credentials<br />

required for working in California public schools: The Clinical-<br />

Rehabilitative Services (C-RS) Credential (Credential Code:<br />

00900) and the Education Specialist Credential for the Deaf<br />

and Hard of Hearing (Credential Code: 00461).<br />

Applicants to a credential program are required to submit<br />

scores from the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST) as<br />

part of the application for admission to a credential program.<br />

Note that the CBEST is given only three or four times each year.<br />

Credential candidates are required to have the Certificate of<br />

Clearance (finger printing) prior to beginning the school experience.<br />

Candidates should apply for the Certificate of Clearance<br />

several months prior to submitting an application to the department<br />

for school practicum placement in order for the certificate<br />

to be processed in time for the placement.<br />

Education Specialist Credential:<br />

Deaf and Hard-of- Hearing<br />

(Credential Code: 00461)<br />

The Education Specialist Credential for the Deaf and Hard-of-<br />

Hearing is required for persons wishing to teach children and<br />

youth who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or deaf with special needs.<br />

The coursework in this special sequence meets the standards of<br />

the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and the<br />

National Council on Education of the Deaf.<br />

Admission Requirements:<br />

1. Formal application to the graduate program in the<br />

Department of Communicative Disorders. Applicants<br />

must satisfy the admission requirements for classified<br />

graduate standing with a concentration in education of<br />

learners who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or deaf with special<br />

needs.<br />

2. Interview with a faculty member in the Department of<br />

Communicative Disorders.<br />

3. American Sign Language proficiency at the intermediate<br />

level or higher as assessed by an SDSU-ASL proficiency<br />

interview.<br />

4. Passing scores on the MSAT and RICA.<br />

Program Requirements:<br />

1. Coursework selected from the Departments of Communicative<br />

Disorders, Policy Studies in Language and Cross-<br />

Cultural Education, and Special Education.<br />

2. A minimum of 200 hours of supervised clinical practica.<br />

3. A minimum of 300 hours of supervised student teaching<br />

in special day and residential school settings.<br />

The credential program involves a total of 56 units. The following<br />

courses are required:<br />

Core courses: Communicative Disorders 550; Policy Studies<br />

in Language and Cross-Cultural Education 600; Special<br />

Education 500, 501, 502.<br />

Pedagogy courses: Communicative Disorders 655, 657,<br />

668; Policy Studies in Language and Cross-Cultural Education<br />

601, 650, 651.<br />

Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing courses: Communicative Disorders<br />

511, 556, 562, 656, 658, 659, 675, 953.<br />

Clinical-Rehabilitative Services Credential<br />

(Credential Code: 00900)<br />

The Clinical-Rehabilitative Services Credential has three<br />

options: Language, Speech and Hearing (LSH); Audiology; and<br />

Language, Speech and Hearing including the Special Class<br />

Authorization (SCA). Students desiring to work with pupils with<br />

speech, language, and hearing impairments on an itinerant or<br />

pull-out basis must complete the Clinical-Rehabilitative Services<br />

(C-RS) Credential for Language, Speech and Hearing (LSH).<br />

Students who wish to be school audiologists must complete the<br />

Clinical-Rehabilitative Services Credential for Audiology. Students<br />

who plan to teach in the classroom under the Special Day<br />

Class Authorization must complete a program of education<br />

courses and experiences in addition to completing the requirements<br />

for the LSH option.<br />

A master’s degree in communicative disorders is required of<br />

all candidates graduating with a C-RS credential.<br />

Candidates for C-RS credential in Language, Speech and<br />

Hearing (LSH) or Audiology (A) must complete the requirements<br />

for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American<br />

Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the requirements<br />

of California licensure in Language and Speech and/or<br />

Audiology. See sections on Certificates and Licensure.<br />

Admission Requirements:<br />

1. Formal application to <strong>San</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> and to<br />

the Department of Communicative Disorders. All applicants<br />

for the credential must satisfy the admission requirements<br />

of the university and of the department for<br />

classified graduate standing and be recommended by the<br />

department for admission to the credential program.
