MOOSE JAW REGIONAL - 2006

JUNE 

It's time, I believe, for a bit of good, old-fashioned back 

slapping, and (dare I say it) maybe a bit of bragging about our 

Club and its members. 

2006 

The recently concluded Moose Jaw Regional gave ample evidence that bridge in 

Saskatoon is very healthy, indeed. Each and every daily winner's list contained a high 

percentage of Saskatoon names. Of course, we've come to expect great performances 

from a number of our top players, and once again they didn't disappoint - Joe and Sandi 

Kerger, Andy and Curley Anderson, John Pulles, and Len Racette were among the top 

performers in the tournament as usual, and we congratulate them all. In addition to 

these performances, there were other bits of truly great news that may be even more 

significant for our club. 

It was wonderful, indeed, to see that some of our intermediate and several of our new 

and enthusiastic players also came through with great performances. 

Eleanor Kennedy, Alf Keating, Genevieve Salamon, Ursula Jugnauth, Dianne Moore and 

Bev Prokop had exceptional tournaments, and were well rewarded in master points for 

their efforts. Moe and Gloria Hnatuck both achieved Life Master status as a result of a 

strong performance in team games, and the foursome of Maxine Cromwell (new LM), 

Lynn Goshawk, Lorraine Lalonde-Mahy and Pat Dickson played at a high level throughout 

the entire week with each of them scoring in excess of 20 master points. 

All in all, our players represented us very well, and, as President of the Saskatoon Bridge 

Club, I am pleased to give some long-overdue recognition to some very deserving 

people. I realize that any message that names names is running the risk of making 

serious omissions. It is my hope that I will be forgiven for any such unintentional 

oversights and that the main point of the message will not be obscured. We are proud of 

all of our players and their achievements.

The Century Sectional Tournament April 7 - 9, 2006

A good time was had by all who attended the Century Sectional at the 

Saskatoon Bridge Club April 7-9 th . 

There were sixteen tables Friday night. The 

overall winners were Nola Buhr and James 

Romanow. Nigel Arding and Gord Anwieler 

won the B and C strats. Sectional free plays 

were awarded to each strat winner. Cathy 

Walsh won $78.00 in the 50-50 draw and 

nine lucky people won door prizes. 

Complimentary pencils, tictac, goodies and 

pizza were appreciated throughout the evening. 

Saturday afternoon involved twenty-two and one half tables. Winners were: A: Elaine 

Panchuk and Margaret Propp, B: Rand Burlingham and Gord Anwieler, C: Eric Callbeck 

and Gerry Fernandes The afternoon 50-50 take of $102.00 dollars went to Bea Duncap 

and nine more door prizes were presented.

Saturday evening Charlie Merle, unit president from North Battleford gave a brief talk 

about the different levels of competition within the ACBL. He made a special welcome to 

Vesta Monk, formerly of Saskatchewan now from Toronto who was attending her first 

tournament with a high school friend from Langham. 

Sixty-six players competed Saturday evening. Winners of all 

three strats were Cheryl and Robin Jamieson of Maidstone, we 

thank them for saving the unit thirty-two dollars in free play 

prizes. Cheryl Jamieson was a double winner also taking 

home $56.00 in 50-50 money. Nine more lucky people took 

home various door prizes. Barbecued hamburgers were 

enjoyed after the game. Thanks to Terry Scott for his 

excellent flipping skills and Aileen Janke for lending us a 

warming oven so they were served hot to all who indulged.

Players were greeted with a continental breakfast at 9:00AM Sunday. Thanks to Diane 

Sarich and her helpers who put that together.

people received the final door prizes. A list of door prize supporters is enclosed. Please 

try to support these local establishments if possible. 

A lunch of homemade soup thanks to Jeannie Wandler, build your own sandwiches, left 

over pizza and hamburgers as well as fruit and veggies was enjoyed by all. 

"Thanks to all who donated the delicious goodies we enjoyed throughout the 

week. Leftover buns, cheese and meat were donated to the Friendship Inn and some 

baking was frozen to be used at the club for future events." 

Many kudos were given to the committee for the excellent hospitality. 

Most important thanks to co-directors Eleanor Kennedy and Lee Von Hagen for their 

tireless work in guiding the players through the weekend. Without their skill and of 

course the cards and players we can not have a successful tournament.

Lessons are winding down for the season. Verla and Shirley have 

completed their ACBL courses and workshops; June and Ken are 

progressing through Beginner Bridge 3. Please note that 

although the Thursday morning BB group does not run over the 

summer, the Monday evening game will continue for players 

under 50 MP. 

To reinforce the learning experience, students know that lesson materials are always 

worth a re-read. In addition, the bridge club’s library contains a wealth of books on a 

variety of bridge topics. All members of the club are invited to borrow (and return) these 

books. 

The teachers will be meeting soon to discuss plans for the Fall session of lessons. It 

would be very helpful for us to have as much input as possible from the club members 

with regard to the current and future Education Program. We aim to please! Feel free to 

share your comments and or suggestions with Verla 373-6144.

EXPANSION AND RENOVATION - DREAM TO REALITY

These days, every time I walk into the Bridge 

Club I am overcome with the feeling of how 

spacious, bright and airy it is. The membership, 

the Executive, the Building Committee and many 

others created this wonderful atmosphere. 

The first step towards having the Club as it is now was the amalgamation of the three 

Clubs, namely The Club (evening), The Branch (afternoon), and The New Horizons 

(Monday morning seniors). Through collaboration and information sessions a new 

Constitution was written and approved by the membership in July 2003. A new 

Executive was elected. To work as one Club it was necessary to complete financial 

statements for each club for the period October 1, 2002 to July 3, 2003. Another 

financial statement was completed for the period ending September 30, 2003 to show 

the financial position of the Saskatoon Bridge Club and was presented to the Annual 

General Meeting in December of 2003. It was at this meeting the Membership requested 

the Executive to proceed with the process for an expansion. 

In January and February, 2004 the Executive worked on identifying our needs and 

outlining the steps required to reach our objectives. A Building Committee was 

appointed. The Committee included Barry Prokop, Rand Burlingham, Doris Hassel and 

Lew Heuchert. They were supplied with the Terms of Reference and things were 

underway. 

In the early stages one of the major realizations was that we not only wanted to expand 

the Club to meet our growing needs, we also needed to renovate the original structure, 

particularly to insulate the walls and ceiling.

In the spring of 2004, an architect was selected, preliminary 

plans and a budget prepared. During the late summer we 

held several information sessions to inform and to get input 

from the membership. On October 17, 2004 we held a Special 

Meeting to request approval to go ahead with the Project and 

to obtain authorization to spend up to $400,000. on the 

project.

We had an excellent turnout of members at the meeting and the motion was 

unanimously approved. This was definitely a highlight. 

The next steps included preparation of final drawings. We went to 

Tender early in 2005 and received several bids with a relatively 

small difference between the high and the low bids. This was 

probably a real low for us because even the lowest bid was more 

than we had budgeted for. All parties involved spent a lot of time 

reviewing the bids and our needs. Finally the Executive, The 

Building Committee and the Architect held a special meeting. The 

Engineer also attended this meeting. We reviewed everything and 

cut many items. We stayed with the mechanical, electrical costs 

because one of our main considerations was good heating and 

ventilation. However, even after the changes we made, we were 

still over budget. Our only option was to call another Special 

Meeting for February 20, 2005. We put a Motion on the floor requesting authorization to 

spend and additional $160,000. The Motion was approved (121 in favor, 4 against). 

Finally everything was GO! We had a Preconstruction Meeting on March 18, 2005 with 

Architect, Dunmac Contractors, Building Committee, Executive representatives, and 

Mechanical and Electrical Contractors. Things were about to actually begin. In April and 

May some work was started and initially there was some discomfort to members 

because of dust and noise. Because of this, Al Robb and myself started looking for 

somewhere to relocate our games during the construction period. We had planned to 

finish the expansion first and play some games in there and find a space to rent for our 

larger games. It now seemed apparent that we should just find a spot and move 

everything for the duration of the construction. After phoning and checking many 

possibilities we lucked out and found space at Market Mall. The size was O.K. and the 

rent was reasonable. We made the decision to make the move and even this went 

smoothly thanks to Al Robb. We played in Market Mall for June and July and two weeks 

in August. Dunmac Contractors paid for the 

rent so even that was in our favor. 

We moved back into the Club as scheduled in 

August 2005. There have been a few things 

that have had to be looked after since that 

time but all in all I believe we are all very 

happy with our new Club. A special THANK 

YOU to everyone involved.

NS BUMP VS EW SIT-OUT

"The following message outlines reasons 

for using a NS Bump rather than an 

EW sit-out wherever possible". 

I'll use the example of a 10 1/2 

table game, but the principal is the 

same in all situations and technically 

superior and worth the little effort it 

takes. 

10 table bump: 

� 30 boards in play 

� all boards are played 9 times and have a top of 8 

� 3 board sit-out so players play either 24 or 27 boards 

10.5 table sit-out: 

� 33 boards in play 

� some boards played 9 times (8 top) and some boards played 8 times (7 top) 

� 3 board sit-out so players play either 24 or 27 boards 

Disadvantages: 

I may get a top board and score 8 while another player's top is worth 7. The computer 

will factor the scores so they have equal value but my top was harder to earn as I had to 

beat 8 pairs while you only had to beat 7 pairs. 

The 2nd is that as players we will have fewer boards in common. With 33 boards and I 

play 24, there are 9 boards I miss. If you also miss 9 boards we only have 15 boards in 

common. With a bump there are only 30 boards in play and we will have 18 boards in 

common. 

In duplicate you want to play as many of the same boards as 

possible and you want the boards to have the same value. It 

is for these 2 reasons that a bump is a superior movement.

as our socials offer a different

MAR 06 Executive Meeting Highlights 

� On March 10, 2006, a special meeting was 

held to approve the design and 

expenditure for the desk and kitchen 

cabinet. Both items are now on order and 

complete the original club expansion plans 

� 24 sets of new playing cards to be 

purchased suitable for use with the 

duplimate machine 

� The new Friday night game to continue 

� Spring luncheon planned for June 12.

unit for storage of additional tables

gravel the remainder of the parking lot. At

rear door is to be looked into

nights; however, we do appreciate 

donations.

IMPORTANT BRIDGE PLAYERS - Terence Reese 

Terence Reese (born 28 August 1913 in Epsom, died 1996) is British bridge player, regarded as one of 

the finest players of all time, and also as one of the most influential and acerbic of bridge writers with a 

large output including several books which remain in print as classics of bridge play. 

He was one of the designers of the Acol bidding system (named after the Acol Bridge Club in north 

London) which has become the prevailing bidding system in Britain and many parts of the world. 

He played many times for England in the Bermuda Bowl, but his final appearance was marred by 

accusations that he and his partner Boris Schapiro were communicating illegally - in fact cheating. The 

outcome of an enquiry was not clear, and Reese wrote a book Portrait of an Accusation about the affair. 

He did not play international bridge again, but his career as a bridge writer continued unabated. 

In his later years Reese played little competitive bridge, enjoying Backgammon as an alternative.
