Verla and Shirley have completed their ACBL courses and workshops; June and Ken are progressing through Beginner Bridge 3. Please note that although the Thursday morning BB group does not run over the summer, the Monday evening game will continue for players under 50 MP. To reinforce the learning experience, students know that lesson materials are always worth a re-read. In addition, the bridge club’s library contains a wealth of books on a variety of bridge topics. All members of the club are invited to borrow (and return) these books. The teachers will be meeting soon to discuss plans for the Fall session of lessons. It would be very helpful for us to have as much input as possible from the club members with regard to the current and future Education Program. We aim to please! Saskatoon Bridge Club Newsletter EXPANSION AND RENOVATION - DREAM TO REALITY By June Ogilvie These days, every time I walk into the Bridge Club I am overcome with the feeling of how spacious, bright and airy it is. The membership, the Executive, the Building Committee and many others created this wonderful atmosphere. The first step towards having the Club as it is now was the amalgamation of the three Clubs, namely The Club (evening), The Branch (afternoon), and The New Horizons (Monday morning seniors). Through collaboration and information sessions a new Constitution was written and approved by the membership in July 2003. A new Executive was elected. To work as one Club it was necessary to complete financial statements for each club for the period October 1, 2002 to July 3, 2003. Another financial statement was completed for the period ending September 30, 2003 to show the financial position of the Saskatoon Bridge Club and was presented to the Annual General Meeting in December of 2003. It was at this meeting the Membership requested the Executive to proceed with the process for an expansion. In January and February, 2004 the Executive worked on identifying our needs and outlining the steps required to reach our objectives. A Building Committee was appointed. The Committee included Barry Prokop, Rand Burlingham, Doris Hassel and Lew Heuchert. They were supplied with the Terms of Reference and things were underway. In the early stages one of the major realizations was that we not only wanted to expand the Club to meet our growing needs, we also needed to renovate the original structure, particularly to insulate the walls and ceiling. June Ogilvie – Past President In the spring of 2004, an architect was selected, preliminary plans and a budget prepared. During the late summer we held several information sessions to inform and to get input from the membership. On October 17, 2004 we held a Special Meeting to request approval to go ahead with the Project and to obtain authorization to spend up to $400,000. on the project.
