The Scandinavian Project 

Three TWT readers can win double passes to a performance of jazz group 

Elysian Fields on Thursday May 24 at Foundry 616 in Harris Street Ultimo

Local musician Jenny 

Eriksson (pictured) and 

her band Elysian Fields will 

launch their Scandinavian 

Project on the night which 

features Scandinavian jazz 

and folk songs. 

Jenny formed the jazz 

group three years ago and 

it is Australia’s only electric 

viola da gamba band. 

Having featured at the 

Vivid Festival and Sydney 

International Women’s Jazz 

Festival in 2017, they’ve 

quickly built a reputation for 

performances that blur the 

boundaries between jazz, 

chamber music and world 

music. 

There’ll also be some 

newly composed music including 

the world premiere 

of a new piece by Putneybased 

Siebe Pogson, who 

is Jenny’s son and the bass 

player in the band. 

Jenny’s grandfather was 

Swedish. She has previously 

released a critically 

acclaimed CD of Swedish 

music with her acoustic ensemble, 

The Marais Project. 

“We’ve been working 

on this project for months 

now”, Eriksson said. “The 

music is fantastic, and I am 

sure anyone who comes 

along will enjoy it.”

Victor has appealed to the Planning Minister

freeze the approval of any further high

proper independent assessment has been 

undertaken to assess community impact.

Anyone familiar with Ryde understands that overdevelopment 

is hurting our community. 

Today I write not only as your Member of Parliament 

but as a local resident, frustrated like you about the over 

development in Ryde. 

Ryde Council’s planning laws are broken. Council’s Local 

Environment Plan (LEP) sets the rules for assessment of 

planning proposals across our community, and has not 

been revised or updated since 2014. These rules are failing 

our community when it comes to overdevelopment, and 

could see as many as 15,000 lots in Ryde made available 

for medium density development. 

By comparison our neighbouring Lane Cove Council 

has an LEP that better protects its community from higher 

density.

This situation was recently highlighted in Lexcen Place 

Marsfield – when Ryde Council zoned this area as R3 (‘medium 

density’) in 2010 and reaffirmed this in 2014 instead 

of rezoning the area to R2 (‘residential’). As a result, a 

developer lodged an application to build apartments which 

is completely out of line with the amenity of the area and 

community expectation. 

Instead of updating its LEP years ago to protect our 

community as it should have, Ryde Council is now shifting 

the blame to the Department of Planning. 

The most recent Council decision to support a 60 storey 

tower in Macquarie Park has brought our community to 

boiling point and highlights the fact again that Council’s 

LEP is broken. It is time for action. The LEP must be 

changed and Council must do it. 

For example, in 2015 the LEP allowed for a height of 10 

storeys on Lane Cove Road in Macquarie Park. At their 

meeting on 10 March 2015 Council approved a 20 storey 

building to be built at 388 Lane Cove Road in Macquarie 

Park. In order for this approval to go ahead the LEP was 

changed, by council, to accommodate this extra development. 

They received $1.6 M in developer contributions for 

allowing this development. 

As noted in the example above, Council has previously 

made amendments to its LEP. My personal opinion is that 

a revised LEP should look at significantly reducing the 

existing high and medium density benchmarks given the 

development already approved and the strain our community 

is already facing. 

I have taken a stand with community and fought hard 

against overdevelopment. We have successfully reduced 

the height and scale of developments including at Meadowbank, 

Whiteside Street, and Allengrove Crescent in 

North Ryde. Together we won the fight to keep open 

space at Blenheim Park and Tennis World in North Ryde 

and Smalls Road in Ryde, where a new primary school is 

currently being built. This year, we are fighting against any 

proposed development of the TG Millner 

Fields at Marsfield. 

Ryde Council must amend their 

LEP to stop the development in 

Ryde. Only Ryde Council has 

the power to do so. Please Ryde 

Council, urgently update your 

LEP.

Manor houses not 

wanted in Ryde

Reading TWT (May 2, 

2018) there were two full 

page adverts with differing 

points of view over the new 

building codes. 

One issue in particular 

grabbed my attention, the 

manor houses which allow 

four dwellings on as little as 

a 600 square metreblock. 

A duplex on that size is a 

squeeze. 

But four? 

I know who I trust on this. 

Ryde Councilis our local 

elected body, made up of all 

parties and independents. 

As they say in their advertisement 

this very significantly 

increases density 

in low density areas and 

should be rejected. 

Ryde municipalityhas already 

had more than its fairshare 

of development.

Putney DA 

Dear Sir, 

The residents of both 

McGowan Street and Putney 

Parade Putney are objecting 

to a development 

application proposed at 26 

McGowan Street Putney. 

The development clearly 

breaches the council’s own 

numerical rear setback 

controls from the water. 

This breach negatively 

impacts on amenity of the 

surrounding land by way of 

visual impact, view loss, privacy 

and overshadowing. 

A building with a compliant 

rear setback from the 

water would result in a lesser 

impact and it will be more 

comparable with surrounding 

developments. 

The nearby developments 

all adopt a terraced style 

approach to their sloping 

lands and step down the 

site to remain two storeys 

in height for majority of the 

building. 

The development proposal 

however will include 

three stroreys for a large 

portion of the building and 

up to four storeys for a significant 

area of the building. 

This is outside of the 

councils development control 

plans. 

The numerical rear setback 

breach is a substantial 

breach of the Ryde Council’s 

development control 

codes and leads to a direct 

conflict with neighbouring 

properties. 

Should this ever be approved 

it would establish an

both immediate and long 

term residential re-developments 

around Morrison 

Bay. 

Everyone will be able to 

build a four storey house

We have given the council 

a signed petition with 

twelve of the surrounding

to its local residents and 

enforce its own development 

control codes and 

stop non-compliant developments.

Dear Sir, 

Chinese officials recently 

took aim at our education 

authorities virtually accusing 

them of discriminating 

against Chinese students 

by not letting more of them 

in. 

The sheer hide of these 

idiots. 

It is a fact that Chinese 

students make up the largest 

percentage of overseas 

students studying here, and 

have been for years. 

In fact most of the over 

half million overseas students 

now studying here 

came from the Asian region, 

China, Malaysia, India, 

Vietnam and Nepal of 

all places. 

The obvious question to 

ask is why are they coming 

here to study in such huge 

numbers. 

As is well documented 

our education system is 

very far from being up there 

with the best in the world. 

Some people would argue 

that we are breeding a nation 

of under achievers otherwise 

there would be no 

need for the flawed, failed 

and easily scammed so 

called «Skilled Immigration 

Program». 

So what attracts them to 

our country in such enormous 

numbers? 

My opinion is that not 

only are they allowed to 

buy property here (making 

a fortune in capital gains 

and sub letting) but they are 

virtually guaranteed Australian 

residency at the end 

of their studies. 

What a scam and rort this 

is as many of them will not 

find work in their chosen 

field. 

I have met plenty of 

Taxi drivers, Uber drivers, 

Pizza delivery drivers etc. 

who have completed their 

«studies» here. 

The useless morons in 

Canberra are virtually handing 

out Australian citizenship 

to people who can 

afford to study here rather 

than on merit. 

It allows these students 

to then sponsor their families 

and relations to migrate 

here. 

Is at any wonder then, as 

Pauline Hanson once famously 

said, that «we are 

being swamped by Asians».

Which ‘Facts’ are 

the real Facts?

In last week’s edition 

there was a page of information 

from NSW 

Government Planning & 

Environment giving ‘’THE 

FACTS’’ about the new 

planning code (Low Rise 

Medium Density Housing) 

to be introduced from 6 

July 2018. 

In particular the new 

housing term ‘’Manor 

house’’ was explained. It 

claimed that ‘’these homes 

will fit into existing neighbourhoods’’ 

and councils’ 

planning codes. 

On another page Ryde 

Council urged the reader 

to ‘’SAVE our streets’’ and 

stated ‘’THE REAL FACTS’’ 

which, overall, implied that 

the state government is 

imposing new undesirable 

rules on Ryde Council. 

So which participant in 

what has become a blame 

game do we, the residents 

and ratepayers of Ryde, 

believe? 

Both parties need to get 

together, put politics aside 

and sort this out. 

One FACT is clear. 

In recent years people 

across all of Ryde have 

coped with the effects 

from considerable extra 

development in certain areas 

close to public transport. 

Another FACT is that we 

don’t want anymore, especially 

in areas that currently 

contain low rise low 

density housing. 

Enough is enough.

New State Housing 

Code welcomed 

Dear Sir, 

Thank you to the State 

Government. The new 

Housing Code is greatly 

welcomed. 

I agree to the low to medium 

density housing to 

meet the demands of population 

growth across the 

community. 

Most Australians do not 

aspire to apartment living 

communities and as 

the consumer should have 

more choices that resembles 

the Australian culture. 

The Body Corporate 

managing numerous property 

issues and owner 

complaints is a burden. 

With high rise residential 

developments, property 

owners take a risk 

when purchasing newly 

constructed apartments, 

should they be embroiled 

with builders warranty 

matters due to shonky 

workmanship given the 

lackadaisical approach by 

PCAs and contractors taking 

short cuts. 

Smaller developments 

are far more “controlled” 

and efficient to construct 

given the shorter construction 

phase and to manage 

by the body corporate. 

The public can surmise 

corporate property developers 

have used up their 

cat lives by now for the 

many published misdemeanours 

and negligent 

cases. 

Council failing to follow 

processes and procedures 

therefore wasting public 

money, when forced to 

seek ICAC inquisitions for 

misconduct of its internal 

members. 

The new Housing Code 

will permit small to medium 

property developers 

to strike in a market that 

has been monopolised by 

unscrupulous corporate 

property developers. 

Council is now reiterating 

the adage “loss of amenity” 

and “traffic congestion” 

which was always reiterated 

by the public at large for 

the high residential density 

developments such 

as Putney Hill Project and 

Shepherd’s Bay, Meadowbank; 

what has changed 

anyway? Nothing. 

So why reiterate this 

clique for the new Housing 

Code when the bulk 

and scale is 3-4 storey built 

form, compared to the 8-11 

storey built form to date? 

I support low to medium 

density developments 

spread evenly across the 

community as a whole, and 

is functional in communities 

of the like such as the 

UK and Europe. 

It is visually pleasing with 

community green forums, 

open space and local 

shops in walking distance 

are ecosystems for communities. 

Generally speaking, 

there is less impact on 

the local streets and traffic 

impact compared to the 

super-sized MacDonald’s 

(type) major development 

sites. 

The State Government 

and Council must also provide 

green corridors evenly 

spread across the communities 

to balance the increase 

of property density 

in our local streets. 

There will be greater 

transparency with small 

to medium developments 

processed by Council 

given its lack of resources 

and to reduce its errors in 

the administration process 

such as its handling of major 

development applications. 

The new Housing Code 

will reduce the oligopoly 

that currently exists with 

the property development 

industry and should be 

welcomed for fairness, 

economical reasons and 

social benefits.

Joubert Singers celebrate with 

Silver Anniversary Concerts 

IN 2018 the Joubert 

Singers have been singing 

together 

as Hunters Hill’s community 

choir for 25 years. 

The Joubert Singers began 

in 1993 as a group 

of local singers and over 

the last quarter century 

evolved into a vocal ensemble 

attracting singers 

and audiences from Sydney 

and beyond to experience 

the joy of sharing 

great music from around 

the world and across the 

centuries. 

The choir took its name 

from the brothers Jules 

and Didier Joubert, who 

established the district as 

one of Australia’s first residential 

suburbs, building 

some of its most beautiful 

sandstone historic 

edifices, and serving as its 

first mayor and liquor merchant. 

The Joubert Singers 

Choir has since interwoven 

itself into Hunters 

Hill’s history, commissioning 

and performing works 

about the locality, participating 

in its sesquicentenary 

celebrations, and in 

the protests to save Hunters 

Hill from the recent 

threatened council merger.

Ryde solidarity with Armenia’s democracy movement 

RYDE’S Armenian speaking community held apro-democracy 

rally at West Ryde’s community hall on Monday night. 

The rally follows massive prodemocracy 

demonstrations in 

the Armenian capital Yerevan in 

recent weeks in the wake of the 

resignation of Serzh Sarkisian. 

Ryde’s Armenians have expressed 

support from pro-democracy 

leader Nikol Pashinyan 

and an end to political corruption 

and an unequal distribution 

of wealth in the former Soviet 

backed country. 

Monday night’s event also saw 

a debate by a panel of six experts 

moderated by City of Ryde Clr 

Sarkis Yedelian OAM.

Many hands to make communities 

FOUR Riverside Girls High students have launched a project to 

encourage other students to spend less time on social media and 

more time helping the community. 

Students Marcelle 

Hakikat, Neda Pourali, 

Kelsey Feng and Ava 

Daltrey launced the 

Helping Hand App at 

the school last Friday 

as part of the Young 

Change Agents program. 

Their research reveals 

that students spend up 

to nine hours a day on 

social media with an 

average of six hours per 

day. 

They hope the Helping 

Hands App - to be 

promoted through The 

Weekly Times, when 

built - will attract sponsors 

as well as nonprofit 

community organisations 

who need 

student volunteers. 

Their research also 

shows that community 

organisations rarely advertise 

for volunteers 

and the project aims to 

encourage them to seek 

enthusiastic stiudents. 

They aim to raise 

around $3,000 to launch 

the project and have already 

received enthusiastic 

support from visiting 

students from Wee 

Waa High School. 

Participants in the 

Helping Hands initiative 

will receive merit 

badges.

Cantonese Opera Concert 

My friends always ask me if I’ll be bored with 

nothing to do after retiring from being the chairman 

of the Eastwood Lunar New Year Celebration 

Committee a couple of months ago. 

I tell them the usual, that I look forward to travelling, 

spending time with my grandkids and doing 

more exercise. But the truth is that I know I 

would miss the community very much if I were 

to step down entirely. That’s why I continue to 

keep busy with other great community groups 

such as the Multicultural NSW’s Regional Advisory 

Council, Eastwood Chamber of Commerce, 

Ryde Hospital’s Consumers Committee, and the 

AAAB Harmony Soccer Cup. In particular I cherish 

the memories I have made as President of 

the Eastwood Chinese Senior Citizens Club, the 

group I started volunteering for since 1997. 

The Seniors Club offers a whole range of recreational, 

cultural, educational and welfare activities 

for our members, many of whom are retired 

like myself. Our weekly Wednesday activities 

have only been possible with the support of our 

venue, St Philip’s Anglican Church, and that’s 

we are proud to present a Cantonese opera 

concert Wednesday week to help raise funds for 

their renovation.

others Day moment brings back childhood memories 

CHILDHOOD memories of Mothers Day were 

fondly recalled by local mum Renae Hons when 

her son Lucas told her how much he loved her 

on Friday. 

She said Friday’s magical 

moment brought back 

memories of cakes, kisses, 

flowers and getting 

up early in the morning to 

surprise her own mum. 

“I especially remember 

going out to buy a beautiful 

present for mum and 

the most beautiful present 

I found was a beautiful 

glass with gum nuts on it,” 

she said. 

“Today my mum lives in 

the Czech Republic and I 

miss her terribly, so I will 

be thinking about her a lot 

on Mothers Day. 

“I have so many wonderful 

memories of Mothers 

Day and of course I’ll 

never forget the look in 

my son’s eyes when he 

first wished me a happy 

Mothers Day and gave me 

a present. 

“Of course, this Mothers 

Day my own children 

plan to get up early and 

surprise me and are just 

as excited as I was when 

I was.” 

Renae said it is important 

to have a day that 

honours mothers and is 

thrilled the school will also 

host an event to show appreciation. 

“As a mum you don’t 

think about all the things 

you do, so to have a day 

where a school shows 

how much it cares is very 

special.” 

Putney Public School 

Principal John Koletti 

agreed. 

“Our event is a way 

we can show mums and 

grand mums, godmothers 

and aunts how important 

they are in the life of our 

school,” he said. 

“And they are very important, 

from running 

the canteen to being on 

the P&C to collecting for 

the second hand clothes 

drive. 

“But most importantly 

of all they support their 

children, they drive them 

to and from school, they 

watch them play sport and 

they help with their homework 

and stand by them 

when they feel unwell. 

“There’s so many, many 

things mothers give that I 

can honestly say they are 

the backbone of our community.”

An innovative Finnish firm 

hopes to bring the Northern 

Sun to Ryde. 

Igor Rodet the CEO of Finland’s 

Lumitar firm hosted a 

trial of it’s solar powered light at 

Meadowbank Park this week and 

City of Ryde Clr Trenton Brown 

was impressed by what he saw. 

“These lights are highly efficient 

and can be used to floodlight 

a sportsfield or a car park,” 

he said. 

“They will reduce our carbon 

footprint and most importantly 

reduce our costs because each 

light has a 25 year lifespan, which 

means we don’t have to send out 

work crews to change bulbs. 

“I was excited by the demonstration 

and I will certainly advocate 

for a trial across the City of 

Ryde.”

the memory of their decorated pioneer 

and long serving president Keith Aggett after 

naming the upstairs Heritage Function Centre 

in his honour. 

The Keith Aggett Heritage Function Centre was officially 

unveiled by his wife Beryl and Club Director son 

Graeme Aggett last Friday - on the first anniversary of 

Keith’s death. 

Beryl and Graeme were joined by family members

Keith was regarded as one of the most respected 

officials in the NSW Club movement and rugby league 

scene. 

He was foundation coach, committeeman and 

Leagues Club director in 1963 and served as Football 

Club secretary for four decades from 1965. 

One of his proudest moments was receiving Life 

Membership of the NSW Rugby League in 2013 for his 

services to rugby league. 

Highly regarded by his peers, Keith boasted an impressive 

72 years involvement with rugby league as a 

player, coach and administrator. 

He replaced the late Harry Quinlan as President of 

Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club in 2003. 

A foundation member of both boards, the longserving 

Aggett was an outstanding leader and the 

Leagues Club president at the time of his passing.

Anthony Roberts to crackdown on 

private certifier building approvals 

THE State government will introduce major reforms to regulate the power 

of private certifiers paid to approve two storey buildings in one storey 

bungalow neighbourhoods. 

In an exclusive interview 

with The Weekly Times, 

Deputy Secretary, Policy 

and Strategy (NSW Department 

of Planning 

& Environment) Alison 

Frame revealed the reforms 

are expected to 

come into force by Christmas 

and will crack down 

on certifiers paid by property 

developers to issue 

compliance approval for 

controversial developments. 

The issue is a major concern 

in the City of Ryde 

where angry ratepayers 

recently addressed a 

council meeting to blast 

private certifiers, known 

to be under pressure to 

certify development proposals 

for the clients who 

hire them. 

But what goes up might 

come down. 

“There will now be powers 

of the courts to knock 

down things that are 

found not to be compliant,” 

Alison Frame said. 

“Planning Minister and 

Lane Cove MP Anthony 

Roberts is keen to see 

reforms and councils will 

have the power to stop 

work for seven days to 

ensure compliance.” 

City of Ryde Councillor 

Roy Maggio (pictured) 

said the local council 

does not have enough 

staff to supervise private 

certifiers “on the job” and 

has heard cases where 

neighbours have alleged 

council staff have virtually 

taken the private certifiers 

compliance approval on 

trust. 

Alison Frame takes up 

the point. 

“What we have found 

is that there is a big gap 

in the system because 

councils weren’t resourced 

and so we have 

created a new system 

where council’s can resource 

(employ) a compliance 

officer and the 

council is going to be resourced 

through a levy,” 

Ms Frame said. 

“The levy will increase 

the cost to developers 

because private certifiers 

will add this cost to 

their bills but it will still 

be thousands of dollars 

cheaper and faster than 

trying to get development 

approval under the previous 

system.” 

This is very much in line 

with the government’s rationale 

of trying to make 

the development application 

process as cheap 

and easy as it is to get a 

mechanic to certify a car 

as road worthy for registration. 

But Councillor Roy 

Maggio believes there 

are private certifiers only 

too willing to cash in on 

a cheap and easy procedure. 

“They have been cut 

loose on Ryde and a lot of 

things are being too easily 

ticked off as compliant or 

swept under the carpet,” 

he said. 

“I have had 554 complaints 

about this in Ryde 

alone due to overdevelopment 

and because our 

council is under staffed 

and under resourced to 

crack down on it.” 

Councillor Maggio made 

his comments on Friday 

at the home of the Jade 

and Todd Percy in Morrison 

Road, Gladesville 

where a private certifier 

signed off on a two storey 

neighbouring development 

(pictured) that was 

deemed to be a compliant 

granny flat. 

“We moved into our 

new home two and a half 

years ago because it had 

a backyard where our 

baby Joe could play and 

because it had privacy for 

us,” Jade Percy said. 

“What has happened to 

us is awful, with this massive 

granny flat development 

next door built right 

up to our fence and overshadowing 

our backyard. 

“All we knew about it 

was that it went up in 

March and we were given 

a letter asking us to respond 

within seven days, 

if we had any problems ! 

“And of course there are 

problems, not the least of 

which has been workers 

starting noisy construction 

work before 8 am in 

the morning, right next to 

our bedrooms.” 

Alison Frame concedes 

that Councillor Maggio 

and the Percy family are 

far from being lone voices. 

“There have been 

breaches here and there 

and there have been big 

breaches.” 

“There have been problems 

from the beginning 

and this is why we are 

reforming the compliance 

around private certifiers, 

there was certainly not 

community confidence or 

council confidence.” 

Alison Frame warns not 

to expect change overnight. 

“Our big concern, our 

big concern, is that we 

are not training enough 

people as private certifiers 

and we are working 

with TAFE on this.” 

In the City of Ryde where 

Mayor Jerome Laxale has 

introduced a Save Our 

Streets campaign while in 

neighbouring Hunters Hill, 

Mayor Mark Bennett concedes 

there are ratepayers 

who do not like the 

state government removing 

local councillors powers 

to determine local development 

applications. 

“I do think private certifiers 

are under pressure 

from the people who 

employ them, simply because 

their business depends 

on it,” he said. 

Alison Frame said Hunters 

Hill has significant 

protection. 

“You cannot do a complying 

development procedure 

in a heritage area 

and there is not much 

complying development 

in Hunters Hill because of 

that,” she said. 

Councillor Maggio will 

be watching the reforms. 

“What we face here in 

the City of Ryde is nothing 

less than the death of 

the Aussie backyard.”

Thirty eight year old Cecilia 

Haddad’s distinctive 

red Fiat was found at West 

Ryde station on the Sunday 

afternoon. 

Friends became concerned 

about her welfare 

after she failed to turn up 

for events on Saturday after 

attending a barbecue 

on Friday night and speaking 

to friends the following 

morning. 

It is not known how her 

car ended up at a train 

station and who may have 

been driving it, if not Ms 

Haddad. 

Strike Force Bronwyn 

has been established to 

investigate the case and 

police divers have been 

searching waters under the 

Gladesville Bridge for a set 

of keys that could be a crucial 

piece of evidence, although 

it has not been revealed 

who owns the keys. 

Kayakers discovered her 

body in the Lane Cove River 

area at around 10.15am 

on Sunday and alerted the 

authorities. 

Since then police have 

been trying to piece together 

the final 24 hours 

as her family in Brazil have 

appealed to the public to 

come forward with any information 

that could find 

her killer.

Elderly woman is 

killed in Gladesville 

AN 85 year old woman was killed crossing Victoria Road in Gladesville on Thursday. 

Police and paramedics responded 

to the fatality around 

10.30am after the woman attempted 

to cross three westbound 

lanes from the northern 

side of Victoria Road and stood 

on the median strip. 

Police report she stepped out 

in front a vehicle and was hit before 

being rushed to Royal North 

Shore hospital in a critical condition. 

The 72-year-old driver of the 

vehicle was taken to Ryde Hospital 

for mandatory blood and 

urine tests and charges are not 

expected to be laid .

A SECOND person has been 

arrested and charged in relation 

to a biting and robbery incident 

at Macquarie Park last month. 

The 17-year-old was charged 

with Aggravated Robbery and 

Inflict Actual Bodily Harm. 

He was refused bail and is due 

to appear in Surry Hills Children’s 

Court while a 20-year-old man is 

also facing court in relation to the 

alleged assault. 

Police will allege in court the 

13-year-old boy victim was with 

a friend at a shopping centre 

when the alleged incident occured 

around 11.40am on Monday 

April 16. 

It is alleged he was approached 

by two males who threatened 

him and tried to steal his shoes 

and pushed one of the attackers 

before he was assaulted. 

Police arrested the teenager at 

a medical facility.

North Epping Major Pairs 

PENNANT Hills took out the recent Lady Anne Funerals Triples lawn 

bowls tournament hosted by Denistone Sports Club. Pictured are triumphant 

Pennant Hills trio Don Yeates, Barry James and David Lesslie with 

Lady Anne representatives Cassandra Markham and Edwina Brown. The 

Pennant Hills team sealed the trophy with three wins 46 points from the 

composite team of Kane Gray (Ryde X Phoenix), Ron Court (Denistone 

Sports) and Jim Rando (Denistone Sports) with three wins 41 points. The 

tournament was represented by 22 clubs from all over the metropolitan 

area with 108 lawn bowlers. 

MEET the skilful Gladesville Sporties combination of Fausto Alcuri, Paul 

Mazaroli, Val Moscato and Ben Cutrone that captured the 2018 Fours 

Championship title. They defeated Peter Musumeci, Gary Jones, Geoff 

Bricknell and Peter Coyle 22-18 in an absorbing final with Club President 

Mazaroli claiming bragging rights over Bowls head honcho Musumeci. 

IT was third time lucky for North Epping lawn bowlers Bill Daley and Paul Delves when they recently 

captured the Club’s 2018 Major Pairs championship. The wily duo (pictured holding trophy) 

finished strongly to edge out Tony Taylor and Mark Havron 21-18 in an enthralling final. With Bill 

and Paul in front by two shots and holding a slim one on the last end, Tony and Mark had well 

placed bowls and with an ounce of luck could have come away with three shots to steal the title. 

Bill and Paul have been runners up in the previous two years. 

Woodies slam Greens 

EASTWOOD first grade rugby team produced 

a stunning second half revival to blitz Randwick 

43-19 in the Intrust Super Shute Shield competition 

last Saturday at Coogee Oval. 

The Woodies posted 

33 unanswered points in 

a dominant second half 

performance to notch a 

valuable bonus point victory 

over the Galloping 

Greens. 

It was Eastwood’s third 

win of the season and after 

five rounds the team is 

entrenched in sixth spot 

on the premiership ladder. 

The Woodies trailed 

early but scored twice 

through props Dean 

Doumbos and Rob Lagudi 

late in the first half to 

head to the half time interval 

trailing by two points. 

A rejuvenated Eastwood 

ran in four second 

half tries to bury Randwick. 

The Woodies rolled 

Randwick in second 

grade (33-14), third grade 

(22-13), fourth grade (45- 

19) and Colts 3 (24-20) 

but lost 35-15 in Colts 1 

and 52-5 in Colts 2.

and Daisy Puckeridge are the James Tyson International 

Achievement Award recipients for 2018. 

World Age Championships 

in Antwerp, 

Belgium. 

Competing in the 

12-18yrs age division, 

the talented 

Rose of Hunters Hill 

and Puckeridge of 

Concord became 

the first Australian 

acrobatic gymnasts 

to clinch a world 

championship medal 

since the competition’s 

inception in 

1998. 

In an outstanding 

feat, the dynamic 

Gladesville Gymnastics 

Club duo 

were pipped for 

gold by Russia and 

Great Britain by a 

mere 0.15 points. 

Leading up to the 

final routines, Rose 

and Puckeridge 

produced brilliant 

displays in balance 

and dynamics 

to qualify first with 

54.75 points from 27 

pairs from around 

the world.
