Johnathan Vest, Ed. D.
President of TMEA
On behalf of the Tennessee Music Education Association Board of Directors,
Conference and All-State chairs, let me say “Welcome to Nashville!” Our TMEA
attend the concerts as well.
Brad Turner
Co–Conference Chair
I hope when you leave this year’s conference you’ll feel rejuvenated and ready
to be the best music educators ever! Tennessee is blessed to have great
students, teachers, and supporters of music. Thank you for being TMEA!
WELCOME MESSAGE FROM BRAD TURNER AND PAUL WATERS,
CO–CONFERENCE CHAIRS
We are pleased to host the 61st Annual Conference of the Tennessee Music
Education Association once again, and the Tennessee All-State Ensembles in
Nashville, Music City, U.S.A.! All events take place at the Gaylord Opryland
Resort and Convention Center.
This year’s conference is streamlined, with careful consideration to the timing
of various events. There are no sessions that are at the same time in the same
discipline and no meetings during a session. As it was in the recent past, the
conference includes discipline-specific “visit the exhibits” time. There are also
many dining options available at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention
Center with a variety of cuisines.
James P. Waters,
Co–Conference Chair
We hope you enjoy your time in Nashville.
THE HONORABLE BILL HASLAM
49th Governor of Tennessee
In 2014, Bill Haslam was re-elected Tennessee’s governor with the largest victory in
modern Tennessee history.
Under his leadership, Tennessee is recognized as a national leader in education,
economic development, and efficient and effective government.
Since 2011, Tennessee students have been the fastest improving in the country in
academic achievement. High school graduation rates are at an all-time high, and
Tennessee is the first state in the nation to offer high school graduates and adults
two years of community or technical college free of tuition and mandatory fees.
Just four years into the governor’s Drive to 55 initiative to increase the number of Tennesseans with a
postsecondary degree or certificate to 55 percent by 2025, more Tennesseans are going to college and fewer
need remediation when they get there. At the current pace, Tennessee should meet that goal two years early.
Nearly 400,000 net new private sector jobs have been created since Governor Haslam took office and, in 2017
Tennessee’s unemployment rate reached an all-time low in state history.
The governor worked with the Tennessee General Assembly in 2017 to pass the largest tax cut in Tennessee
history while delivering a safe, reliable and debt-free transportation system. He and his administration have cut
$578 million in year to year spending, balanced the budget every year, ensured Tennessee has the lowest debt in
the country and more than doubled the state’s savings account. For only the third time in state history, Tennessee
has been awarded a triple AAA bond rating.
Governor Haslam and his wife, Crissy, have been married for 36 years and are blessed with three children and
seven grandchildren.
DR. CANDICE MCQUEEN
Tennessee Commissioner of Education
Dr. Candice McQueen was sworn in as Tennessee’s commissioner of education
in January 2015. McQueen led a statewide effort to create a new strategic plan
and vision for our schools called Tennessee Succeeds focused on increasing
postsecondary and career readiness for all of Tennessee’s 1 million students. In
summer 2017, Tennessee‘s new state plan was approved under the Every Student
Succeeds Act, which builds on the work started under Tennessee Succeeds. Some of
the hallmarks of the plan include a focus on ensuring Ready Graduates by supporting
more early college coursework and industry certification attainment, a renewed
accountability and support focus on improving achievement and growth for all
students, and elevating a continuum of interventions for the state’s lowest performing schools.
Under McQueen’s leadership, Tennessee recently announced the state’s highest graduation rate in its history
at 89.1%, best overall ACT at 20.1 – a number that represents all public school students in the state, across the
board improvements in the 2nd year of the new state assessment, and a record high number of students taking
and attaining credit for early college coursework. Tennessee has also refocused and reinvested in literacy with
a statewide Read to be Ready campaign, new standards with comprehensive guidance and training on teaching
reading, a statewide coaching network for elementary reading teachers, and summer camps for students who are
furthest behind with an investment of over $30 million.
Over the last three years, Commissioner McQueen worked with the governor and the general assembly to pass
the largest investments in K-12 education without a tax increase in Tennessee’s history – an increase that has
resulted in more than $430 million invested in education with the majority going to teacher salaries.
McQueen has also connected with over 14,000 teachers on her Classroom Chronicles Tour, and spent time
in close to 90% of Tennessee’s school districts. McQueen has opened lines of communication between the
department and the public through avenues such as the Assessment Task Force and Assessment Task Force 2.0,
Early Literacy Council, Career Forward Task Force, and the department’s inaugural Parent and Student Advisory
Councils. In addition, she continues to oversee and participate in the department’s Teacher Advisory Council and
the Governor’s Teacher Cabinet.
Prior to her appointment as Commissioner of Education, McQueen served as senior vice president and dean
of the college of education at Lipscomb University. Under her leadership, Lipscomb’s college of education and
teacher preparation program were consistently highlighted as one of the top teacher training programs for
quality and effectiveness. Prior to joining Lipscomb University, McQueen was awarded multiple awards for both
her teaching and the curriculum design of a new magnet school.
She began her career as a classroom teacher, teaching in both public and private elementary and middle schools.
Dr. McQueen has a bachelor’s degree from Lipscomb, a master’s degree from Vanderbilt, and a Ph.D. from the
University of Texas. She serves on the Board of Trustees of the University of Tennessee and the Tennessee Board
of Regents and was recently appointed to serve on the national board for the Council for the Accreditation of
Educator Preparation (CAEP) and as a commissioner for Education Commission of the States (ECS). She is also a
member of Chiefs for Change.
TMEA SELECTED PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLES // THURSDAY, APRIL 12, 2018
1:00 –1:50 PM | EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERISTY BUCSWORTH MEN’S CHOIR
Dr. Alan Stevens, Director
Presidential Ballroom D
BucsWorth Men’s Choir was formed in the early 1990s at East Tennessee State University by
Dr. Thomas Jenrette, now Professor Emeritus, as a primarily a cappella chamber ensemble
called “10 BucsWorth.” This referred to the number of guys in the ensemble and a play-onwords
reference to the ETSU mascot, the Buccaneers. In 2013, under the direction or Dr. Alan
Stevens, the ensemble was expanded to a full men’s choir and has since grown to fifty or more
members each semester.
BucsWorth is composed of men from across all campus disciplines, and it is open to any
student. They meet only twice a week, but perform a series of four concerts each year that
includes a range of traditional and contemporary music. BucsWorth frequently performs in the
Tri-Cities area, and the ensemble is a founding partner of the “Men in Song Choral Festival,”
an annual two-day festival that draws over 150 men from the eastern Tennessee region to sing
together and promote choral music education.
In 2018 BucsWorth will perform for the Tennessee Music Educators All-State Music
Conference. In 2016 BucsWorth was selected to perform at the Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses
National Seminar on the University of Illinois campus. In 2014 BucsWorth was the featured
ensemble at the “Young Men’s Power Sing” in Atlanta, hosted by the Atlanta Youth Singers
and the Atlanta International School. You can find more information about BucsWorth Men’s
Choir and keep up to date about all concert appearances and events on their Facebook page:
www.Facebook.com/BucsWorth
Dr. Alan Stevens is the Associate Director of Choral Activities and Coordinator of Vocal
Music Education at East Tennessee State University. He conducts the BucsWorth Men’s
Choir and Greyscale, an unaccompanied contemporary a cappella ensemble. His choirs
have collaborated with Alice Parker, Ola Gjeilo, Daniel Gawthrop, Chanticleer, New York
Voices, Deke Sharon, and many local ensembles. Greyscale has performed at invited
concerts in New York City, Washington D.C., and extensively throughout the eastern
Appalachian region. BucsWorth has been selected to perform at the Intercollegiate
Debbie Burton & Michael Chester, Conductors
Presidential Ballroom D
Stewarts Creek High School opened its doors in the fall of 2013, completing the final piece in
a unique campus layout that began in 2006 with the opening of Stewarts Creek Elementary
School and Stewarts Creek Middle School. The campus concept, a first for Rutherford County
Schools, allows students and faculty to travel freely to each building for activities that take
place before, during, and after school hours.
The Stewarts Creek High School attendance zone incorporates a feeder system including
four middle schools and eleven elementary schools. Instrumental music instruction begins in
sixth grade at Stewarts Creek Middle School, Rock Springs Middle School, Blackman Middle
School, and Rocky Fork Middle School in full band class settings that emphasize individual and
ensemble skill development.
At the high school level, the concert ensembles are the foundation of the entire band program
at Stewarts Creek. All classes are team taught by two full-time band directors. Students
are assigned to one of three concert ensembles based on ability and grade level. The Wind
Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band meet daily for forty-five minutes. All bands
prepare concert performances each semester and each band participates in the Middle
Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association (MTSBOA) Concert Performance and
Sigh-Reading Assessments each year. Many students at Stewarts Creek study privately with
specialists on each instrument during the school day. Several of these students advance to
achieve individual musical honors with a large majority of students selected by audition for
the All-Rutherford County Band, MTSBOA All-Middle Tennessee Bands, Jazz Bands, and
Orchestras, and the TMEA Tennessee All-State Bands, Jazz Band, and Orchestra.
Other ensemble offerings at Stewarts Creek High School include a class for all percussion
students, a class for members of the color guard, and two jazz band classes that meet daily
