Ramadan 2018 Everything you
need to know about spending
the season in Dubai (page 14)
09.05.18
Hello, Dubai
Time ies when there’s so much to do in a
city like ours, so it’s no surprise we’re getting
ready to mark Ramadan once again, as we
anticipate the start of the month beginning
between Tuesday May 15 and Thursday 17.
Whether you’re a Muslim observing sawm
(the period of fasting) or not, this is always an
incredibly special period in which to be in the
emirate, and an opportunity to re-familiarise
yourself with the culture and traditions of the
city we’re lucky enough to call home. This
summer also heralds the return Dubai Sports
World (page 22) and some great deals on
staycations (page 56), plus a season lled
with big movie releases (page 27). So
don’t let the rapidly warming weather
get you down – there’s much to
embrace about this time of year.
If it’s happening,
it’s here
Jamie’s Pizzeria opens in JLT
F
amous
British chef Jamie Oliver has
a brand-new pizzeria, and it’s right
here in Dubai. Jamie Oliver’s Pizzeria
is now open in Cluster R in JLT.
The opening will be the rst of Jamie’s
Pizzerias in Dubai, although the UK celebrity
chef previously had two Jamie’s Italian
restaurants in the city – the rst in Dubai
Festival City and the second in Jumeirah
Beach Hotel, although both have shut,
The new restaurant is promised to be
“laid-back and affordable”.
“My pizzerias are all about incredible
authentic, hand-stretched pizzas topped
with the most fantastic and most delicious
ingredients,” says Oliver. “Plus, add some
salads and some delicious desserts, you’re
going to absolutely love it.”
Dishes on the new menu
include garlic bread, chilli chicken
wings and mushroom fritti,
plus Jamie’s burrata. There
are also “al forno” dishes
including lasagne.
If you’re up early there’s a
breakfast menu with items
ranging from pancakes and
wafes to granola and fruit salad.
But it’s the pizza that we’re
here for. Pizzas can be made with
a sourdough or wholegrain crust. You can
also get a half pizza with small salad.
Toppings include a classic margherita,
marinara, pepperoni or barbecue chicken,
Handstretched
pizzas
baked to
perfection
The British chef has launched
a new pizza restaurant
funghi, quattro formaggio, pesto
chicken and carbonara.
More unusual varieties
include paneer picante – spicy
paneer with roasted peppers,
mozzarella, lemon, ginger and
coriander, or chicken tikka, with
tomato sauce, chilli, free-range
chicken, red onion and mint
yoghurt. Pizzas all come in at
under Dhs75 and the restaurant
also has a kids’ menu.
The TV chef is known for his
no-frills food, packed full of nutritional value,
and we can’t wait to try this new spot.
Open daily 8am-10.30pm. Cluster R, JLT,
Art at The Dubai Mall
Art-lovers, you’ll have noticed
a massive new installation in
Downtown, recently. The Dubai
Mall has revealed 1.78, a
giant suspended sculpture by
American artist Janet Echelman.
The oating structure sits
right above a section of The
Dubai Fountain and is named
after a scientic event on
February 27, 2010, where an
earthquake caused the day
to be shortened by
1.78 microseconds.
The art piece is comprised
of layers of bright polyethylene
threads tied in more than
600,000 knots over nearly 124
kilometres of string.
This is Echelman’s most
recent piece in her Earth Time
Series, with her other works
being exhibited in cities across
Europe, Asia, and the USA.
As with most of the city, the
sculpture is best seen at night
– coming to life with projected
coloured lights.
The daily fast is broken once the sun has set
Ramadan is the ninth month of the
Islamic calendar and Muslims
observe it all over the world
as a period of fasting (sawm,
one of the ve pillars of Islam)
from sunrise to sunset. It’s a
sacred period of reection, worship and selfimprovement,
as well as an important time for
families and friends to come together.
As Ramadan is called by the moon-sighting
committee in Saudi Arabia at the appearance
of the new moon, exact dates cannot be given
until the night before. This year, Ramadan
is expected to fall from Tuesday May 15 to
Thursday June 14 (although we’re waiting on
the nal world from ofcials), after which three
days of Eid Al-Fitr will be celebrated.
This is a special month of the year that
everyone can benet from, and a great time
to immerse yourself in the country’s culture
and heritage. In the Gulf region many iftar and
suhoor events are set up in homes, hotels
and restaurants as a way to bring the entire
community together. Even if you haven’t been
fasting, you are still welcome to join.
DOS AND DON’TS
Be courteous to those around you during
Ramadan by following these guidelines:
Do…
Dress appropriately. Dubai already has
guidelines in place for dress, especially
in public areas such as malls and parks.
Be especially considerate of these during
Ramadan. Men and women should wear
clothes that cover their shoulders and knees.
Do…
Respect those around you. If you’re not
fasting, be considerate and mindful of others
who are. Drinking and eating in public is
considered very offensive and can even
attract a ne or a reprimand from the police.
If you want to eat or drink in daylight hours
during Ramadan it has to be done indoors
and out of sight. While be sure to look out for
designated screened-off areas within public
places that can also be used to consume food
or drink without causing upset.
Do…
Show extra consideration when doing
business. Where a handshake might be
normal at the start of a meeting for the rest of
the year, someone who is fasting may wish to
avoid a greeting of physical contact.
Do…
Travel earlier or later on roads at sunset,
since people who are fasting are likely to be
travelling at this time to attend iftar.
Do…
Accept invitations to iftar. Aside from being
a wonderful way to experience the UAE’s
culture, it’s polite. Take a small gift, such as a
box of dates.
Do…
Use Ramadan greetings such as Ramadan
Kareem and Ramadan Mubarak.
Do…
Be charitable. A big part of Ramadan is
helping others. There are lots of ofcial
charities in Dubai and causes around the city.
SHARING FRIDGES
The popular initiative that gives back
to the community will be running again
this year. The sharing fridges campaign
gives people in need access to free food
and drinks during the month. Started in
2016, Ramadan fridges were rst seen on
Facebook, raising awareness and getting
people to stock fridges placed throughout
the city. Each is emptied and lled up to 20
times a day. And it takes several generous
donors to ll a fridge, so they need all the
help they can get. The group has been
a major success, and now has almost
28,000 members. Last year more than 170
fridges across the city were set up, giving
blue collar workers plenty to eat and drink
during the summer. Food needed for the
fridges includes juices, soda, milk, laban
and packaged foods. Fruits and vegetables
are also among favourites – although
cooked food will not be taken.
Email: info@ramadansharingfridges.org.
Don’t…
Eat, drink or chew gum in public during
daylight hours. This includes on the street, in
cars, at the ofce (check your own ofce rules)
and any other public spots. Breaking this rule
is legally punishable.
Don’t…
Play loud music in public. If you’re in a car,
keep the volume of the radio down. If you’re
on the Metro or somewhere similar, keep the
volume down on your headphones. Ramadan
is a contemplative time, and you should be
mindful of disturbing others.
Don’t…
Use offensive language or gestures. This isn’t
something you should make a habit of anyway,
but it’s particularly important to refrain from
this during Ramadan.
Don’t…
Smoke in public areas. If your workplace or
hotel has an outside public smoking area
be aware that you will need to change your
routine accordingly for the month.
TERMS TO KNOW
One of the best ways to show respect to
other people during Ramadan is by knowing
what terminology to use. Here you can
impress your friends, colleagues or even
strangers in the street with this quick and
easy glossary:
Iftar: In its most literal translation, this means
“break fast”. It is the rst meal after sunset to
break the fast.
Suhoor: Pre-dawn meal before the fast begins
for the day. Usually à la carte in restaurants.
Ramadan kareem: A greeting that means
“generous Ramadan”.
Ramadan mubarak: Another greeting to
wish people a happy Ramadan, which means
“congratulations, it’s Ramadan”.
Sawm: The word used for fasting and one of
the ve pillars of Islam.
Zakat: This is another of the ve pillars of
Islam. It requires adult Muslims to pay 2.5
percent of their wealth to people who need it
most. While it can be paid any time during the
year it is more prominent during Ramadan.
Salah: Prayer, another of the ve pillars
of Islam. Five prayer times are observed
throughout the day, the rst at dawn, then
at noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and night.
Tarawih: Special congregational prayers held
each evening during Ramadan, in addition to
the ve daily prayers.
Eid Al-Fitr: Meaning “feast of breaking the
fast”, this three-day celebration marks the end
of Ramadan and the start of “Shawwal” – the
tenth month in the Islamic calendar – with
prayers, festivities, food and gifts.
Mubarak aleik al shahr: A greeting meaning
“may you get the blessings of the month”.
Kil aam wa inta fee kheir: A greeting that
means “may each year pass and you be well”.
IFTARS TO TRY
Iftar is the meal with which Muslims
break their daily fast. Traditionally, the
fast is broken with dates and a small
drink of either water, juice or Arabic
coffee, before prayers are undertaken,
following which iftar is served. Often,
Emirati families put on big evening meals
for all their loved ones and friends – you’ll
sometimes see iftar tents pop up outside
big villas – though many also eat out in
restaurants around the city. There are
hundreds to choose from, some offering
Middle Eastern cuisines and buffets, others
offering contemporary and fusion twists on a
traditional iftar.
SUHOORS
TO TRY
Suhoor is the meal consumed
before prayers and fasting begin.
While most iftars tend to be
served buffet-style, suhoors are
often à la carte. Most hotels
and restaurants serve suhoor
from 9.30pm onwards. However, suhoor is
not typically enjoyed so early, or late, in the
day (depending on your sleeping pattern) as
it’s widely consumed in the early hours before
sunrise. But for tourists, and especially those
used to enjoying some of the Mediterrean’s
nest late-night suppers, the meal times are
quite suitable. And for anyone yet to shake off
jetlag, it’s perfect round-the-clock restaurant
food, so no settling for a 3am pit stop at
no-frills takeaways.
There are plenty of suhoor dishes to
enjoy, try sambousek (pastry lled with sweet
spiced lamb), khoresht fesenjan (Persian
chicken stew with pomegranate molasses and
walnuts), Umm Ali (Arabic bread and butter
pudding) and dates in all manner of colours,
textures and taste.
handpicked from the country while the our
Anatolia. The age-old recipes used to develop
the menu have been given a modern injection.
There’s an à la carte meal with a selection of
hot and cold mezze, pides, mixed grill platters
and an array of Turkish desserts (baklava
anyone?) throughout the night with stunning
Guide
to Dubai Sports
World 2018
Darragh Murphy nds out how to get involved in indoor sports this summer
Fancy a kickabout but can’t face heading
outside as the temperature soars?
You’re in luck. Sports will be ung left,
right and centre for all to enjoy in the eighth
edition of Dubai Sports World this summer,
opening this month on Thursday May 17.
Hosted by the Dubai World Trade Centre, not
only is it the biggest indoor space in the region
but, more importantly, it’s completely airconditioned.
There are also some brand-new
sports to try this year, so read on to nd out
how to take part.
1The ins and outs of the arena
Before we look at the numerous activities
going on throughout the summer, it’s time to
scope out what facilities this year’s DSW has
to offer. Covering 25,000 sq
m of air-conditioned space,
this complex offers relief from
the blazing heat outdoors.
Along with this, the venue
will feature six pro-standard
pitches for ve- and sevena-side
football and rugby;
11 basketball courts; 12
badminton courts; three
tennis courts; two volleyball
courts; a cricket pitch; a padel
court; a table tennis zone and
even a 400-metre running track. Phew. There’s
also a state-of-the-art gym equipped with
Technogym gear and operated by Gold’s Gym
if you’re more into solo workouts.
25,000
square
metres of airconditioned
space
2Become a Ninja Warrior
Seeking to become a
master of the shadows? Take
on the Ninja Warrior course and
see if you have what it takes.
Suitable for children and adults,
this will test your athletic
abilities to the max. Comprising
a 14 element obstacle
course, all who dare take on
the challenge will go through
many gruelling (but hugely
fun) trials, including the sea of
swings, the oating bridge and the intriguingly
named warped wall. Race against the clock to
become the ultimate Ninja Warrior, or master
the course and take it on at your own pace.
6Be a volleyball star
The soft shoreline of Dubai is ideal for
playing beach volleyball, but not when the
sand is piping hot. Not to worry, DSW’s indoor
courts are the solution. A great way to get
t, get involved with the Volleyball Stars Cup,
consisting of 25-minute matches against
24 teams. Plus, you can win up to Dhs5,000
if your whacking ball game is on point.
opponents, as DSW will be setting up its
Open Singles tournament, taking place at the
venue’s three tennis courts. With a whopping
cash prize of Dhs5,000 up for grabs, it’s no
wonder 64 competitors are expected to take
Jun 9. Daily 9am onwards. For personal use:
Dhs100 (off-peak hours), Dhs150
8Shoot some hoops with street basketball
Street basketball is nally making its
debut at DSW. Don’t know the difference
between that and regular b-ball? Played on
half-court, games are usually played three-aside,
and require players to focus on tricks
and formation to steal the ball from their
opponents before they score a three-pointer.
DSW offers both kinds, but book early for
this one, basketball is one the most popular
activities on offer.
Dhs60 (off-peak hours), Dhs90
(peak hours).
Prices vary. Open daily 8am-midnight.
SUMMER
Darragh Murphy explores
what Hollywood has in
store for its audiences for
the next four months
POP
timeoutdubai.com May 9 – 15 2018 27
NOW SHOWING
Over the past decade, Hollywood
seems to have created a formulaic
annual schedule for the silver
screen. Spring kicks off the year
with a collection of indie movies
to warm the heart, then summer
brings out the big guns (quite
literally, in the movies anyway)
and thrills audiences with
explosive trailers and stellar action
sequences. Autumn brings in a slew of horror
icks before Oscar bait slowly creeps in for
winter, along with the annual Star Wars,
Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings thrown in to
assure everyone it’s Christmas time. Rinse
and repeat.
But 2018 feels different. The formula is
broken, as we’ve already witnessed some
of the biggest movies of the year – Black
Panther gave people their Marvel x, Steven
Spielberg unleashed his much-anticipated
Ready Player One and Jennifer Lawrence has
28 May 9 – 15 2018 timeoutdubai.com
already given her award-worthy performance
in Red Sparrow. What’s going on? With
movies like these already giving crowds
quality entertainment, the blockbusters of
summer 2018 are sure to pack a bit more
wallop than usual, and that ain’t a complaint.
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
Let’s not kid ourselves, Innity War is
probably the biggest movie of the year,
Marvel fan or not. Ever since Robert Downey
Jr. rocked up on screen as Iron Man and
introduced us to the Marvel Cinematic
Universe a decade ago, every movie has
been leading up to this event. Crowds have
been waiting in anticipation for years, getting
a glimpse of what’s to come by waiting an
extra ten minutes for a post-credit scene.
We know all about the big bad Thanos, an
intergalactic overlord whose goal is to collect
all six Innity Stones to inict his twisted will
on all of reality. We also know how strong
he is, which is why the whole gang will be
there to stop him – from the patriotic and
now grizzly Captain America to our beloved
gun-touting space raccoon, Rocket, and the
rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy. With
the Russo Brothers directing, who made the
brilliant Captain America: Winter Soldier,
we’re in for a treat. It’s also the very rst
summer movie to kick off the season, and
is in cinemas right now, so good luck to the
rest of the lms following this mash of our
favourite superheroes saving the world.
DEADPOOL 2
Being true to his comic book character by
constantly breaking the fourth wall, Deadpool
was made for the big screen, and box ofce
takings of US$781 million (Dhs2.8 billion)
only proves it. With jokes you can’t help but
laugh at, poking fun at the studio that let the
movie be made and the ridiculous amount
of gore on display, this sequel seems to
want to push it all further, and we wouldn’t
want it any other way. It’s also impossible
to gure out what will actually go on in the
movie, as the IMDb synopsis literally reads:
“After surviving a near fatal bovine attack,
a disgured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson)
struggles to full his dream of becoming
Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also
learning to cope.” While this is a great
concept, we doubt this is the case. Expect
to see a hyped-up Josh Brolin play Cable, a
time-travelling mutant who wants someone
dead, and the quirky Ryan Reynolds as
Deadpool trying to stop the madman.
Director: David Leitch
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena
Baccarin, T.J. Miller
SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY
A Star Wars movie that’s not coming out in
December? There seems to be an imbalance
in the force, alright, but we’re not complaining.
If there was ever a side character who could
hold his own, it would of course be Han Solo
(hence his name). Taking place years before
joining the rebellion, audiences will get to
see a young, arrogant Han meet the furry
and loveable Chewbacca, along with the
suave Lando Calrissian. Expect tons of snarky
comments, witty comebacks and seemingly
no Skywalker family drama (phew). Alden
Ehrenreich looks just the part for a young Han,
we just hope he does Harrison Ford proud. It’s
also our chance to nally see if the man can
actually make a Kessel Run in less than
12 parsecs, so he claims.
Director: Ron Howard
Cast: Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Woody
Harrelson, Thandie Newton
JURASSIC WORLD:
FALLEN KINGDOM
Long gone are the days of that rst encounter
with a dinosaur, that’s very much been there,
done that. But Jurassic World cleverly put
a spin on this and tried to commercialise
dinosaurs, making them bigger and stronger,
which inevitably was the downfall of the
company when its creation ran rampant.
Now, with the prehistoric amusement park
abandoned, the dinosaurs are in danger of
going extinct (again…) when a dormant volcano
starts to erupt. It’s up to Chris Pratt and Bryce
Dallas Howard to get them all off the island
before history repeats itself. It seems a little
far-fetched, but so did Pratt driving alongside
a squad of raptors that he controls like a
military team, and that turned out to be simply
awesome. You’d think the main draw for Fallen
Kingdom would be the T-Rex and other threats
with teeth, but we all know it’s Jeff Goldblum’s
return as Ian Malcolm.
OCEAN’S 8
Ah, the summer heist movie. It wouldn’t
be right to not have a group of smooth and
charming crooks steal a bazillion dollar item
from a snob. What makes this one stand
out? It’s another Ocean’s movie, and this
time, it’s an all-female cast. Sandra Bullock
plays Debbie Ocean, and in good ol’ Ocean
fashion, assembles a team of mists from
various professional backgrounds in order to
steal a US$150 million necklace. The catch
(of course there’s a catch)? They have to
steal it from the neck of a famous celebrity
(Anne Hathaway) while at the New York Met
Gala. Why at that particular time? We’re sure
there’s a good reason. Ocean’s movies are
carried by each character’s cool manner,
INCREDIBLES 2
In a midst of sequels, remakes and reboots,
it doesn’t come as a surprise this Pixar
gem got a follow-up, but people have been
asking for this since 2004. For a lot of us,
our nostalgia senses are off the charts. We
nd our favourite superhero family back right
where we left them, taking on The Underminer
and bringing the costumed vigilante name
back into the spotlight. Now though, baby
Jack-Jack needs to be taken care of properly
with his powers awakening, so Mr. Incredible
stays at home while Elastigirl does what she
does best, defeat the supervillains and save
the day. Like all Pixar movies, it looks like it
will be about the hilarious struggles of a dad
trying to handle a superpowered baby, but we
all know there will be a tear-inducing message
to smack us right in the face. Don’t worry, you
won’t be the only adult sobbing in the cinema
(we hope).
MAMMA MIA:
HERE WE GO AGAIN!
Could they have named the sequel anything
else? The sensational musical that had
everyone in cinemas around the world dancing
and singing along to every Abba song, returns.
The whole cast will be making a comeback,
except with more of a focus on their younger
selves as Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) learns
about her mother’s (Meryl Streep) past in
Greece. While we may not get to see much of
the faces we’ve come to know in the past lm,
we do get to see an energised younger cast
dance and sing to the songs of Abba. Oh, and
maybe, just maybe, if we wish hard enough,
Pierce Brosnan won’t have to sing again in this
one. At least he tried.
Director: Ol Parker
Cast: Lily James, Meryl Streep,
Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT
We start to question if these missions are
actually impossible, seeing how Ethan Hunt
(Tom Cruise) has survived ve other missions
and is now going on to his sixth. Regardless,
it’s always a welcome surprise to see the
Mission Impossible franchise going on
strong, and Fallout seems like it will continue
that trend. This time, Ethan Hunt’s team
nd themselves racing against time after a
mission goes wrong. We know, it sounds like
every other Mission Impossible entry, but each
one always puts a nice twist in the story to
keep audiences on their toes. Expect to see a
lot of death-defying stunts – with people ying
through windows and, of course, Tom Cruise
dangling from in the air at a very, very unsafe
height. Apparently, Cruise even broke his foot
while lming this one and, get this, continued
on in order to get the shot. The lm was partly
shot in Abu Dhabi, too, so look out for some
familar sights on the big screen.
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Cast: Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Rebecca
Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP
Another Marvel blockbuster. With Black
Panther and Avengers Innity War before it,
our two mite-sized heroes will have a lot to
carry on their shoulders. Or do they? Director
Peyton Reed knows how Ant-Man is depicted
– a strange hero with stranger powers – which
is why he made his debut pure fun. A battle
with a giant Thomas the Tank Engine is not
something audiences often have an excuse to
see, and this sequel will bring a host of new
ideas Reed can play around with. The trailer
already shows a building turn into a suitcase,
and a giant Hello Kitty used as a weapon. Paul
Rudd and Evangeline Lilly make for a comedic
powerhouse of a duo, and they’re up against
a villain called Ghost, who can (you guessed
it) become intangible like a ghost. Call them
a joke if you want, but Ant-Man and The Wasp
probably have the coolest powers in all of
Marvel and will be a spectacle to see.
Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer
Charlize Theron spills on her new comedy-drama, Tully. By Gail Tolley
t’s been described as Mary Poppins
for millennials, but Charlize Theron’s
new movie Tully is far better than
that. Theron plays Marlo, who’s
expecting her third child. Anticipating
the impending sleeplessness and stress, her
brother and his wife pay for a night nanny. She
arrives in the form of Tully (Mackenzie Davis),
a free-spirited 26-year-old. Directed by Jason
Reitman (Young Adult, also starring Theron,
Juno) and written by Diablo Cody (who wrote
Juno and Young Adult), it’s full of spiky oneliners
and telling-it-like-it-is attitude. But more
importantly, it’s a sensitive and relatable look
at parenthood and growing up. Here’s Theron
on the role.
Parenthood has rarely been portrayed so
realistically. Was this a story you felt needed
to be told?
My youngest was around six months old when
I read the script and, having raised two small
kids in my life, it just felt familiar to me. It was
refreshing for somebody to be telling the truth
about what it feels like sometimes and not
worrying about the stigma that comes when
parents are being honest.
Diablo Cody’s dialogue is typically sharp. Were
there any of her lines you particularly loved?
Oh yeah, she’s hilarious. I absolutely loved
the line, “Girls don’t heal, if you look up close
we’re all just covered in concealer”. It’s such
quintessential Diablo. And I loved how she used
all these things you hear mothers say about
having kids, like “It’s a blessing” and “It’s the
best thing ever”. I say those things all the time.
For the rst time I thought: why do I say that?
You went through a physical transformation for
this film – gaining 50 pounds. Are you surprised
that’s what people are focusing on?
Women gain that amount, if not more, every
time they get pregnant. So it’s not that big of a
deal. I was playing this woman and I wanted to
It was refreshing
for somebody to be
telling the truth
get closer to her. I don’t think when an actress
does that we have to get so focused on it.
What was it like working with newborns?
We had two sets of twins. One set shot with
me throughout the movie so I got to know
those babies pretty well. They were actually
two boys, playing Mia, and they were supersweet.
They were so easy.
What reaction have you had to the movie so far?
It’s been really interesting to see young
women who don’t have kids being incredibly
moved by this story. Because there’s
something of a Tully experience too. Younger
women see this movie through the eyes of
Tully: “What will my life be like? Who will I
marry? Am I going to be happy?” Everybody
can relate to that time where they have to say
goodbye to a piece of themselves to make
room for the next chapter. That’s ultimately
what Marlo’s story is about.
Are there other films about parenthood you love?
Kramer vs Kramer was an interesting movie,
because even though some people think that
the mother was villainised in it, I don’t know
that she was. There’s something beautiful in
acknowledging that we can’t all be parents
the way we think parents should be. And I
think some people make horrible mistakes.
That movie has always stayed with me.
Your character Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury
Road is perhaps the best female action hero since
Alien. Would you like to play her again?
Wow, that’s a really nice thing to say. Ripley is
one of my favourite characters ever. Yeah, I’d
love to. If George [Miller, Fury Road director]
called me tomorrow I’d be totally on board.
I absolutely loved working with him, and I
loved that character. I spent a lot of time with
her in the desert and I feel very attached
to her. It would be great to revisit that if
everything aligned.
Tully is out now in cinemas across Dubai.
NEW
LOOK
Eating Out
Against the grain
Amy Mathieson plans a post-shopping bite at the new-look Brunswick. Eatery | Bar | Terrace
When it comes to “mall food”
the new menu at Brunswick
is about as far removed from
the stereotypical oppy slice of
food court pizza as you can get.
The restaurant and bar has undergone a
complete revamp, and it looks seriously cool.
It’s ditched its Sports Club moniker and now
goes by the name Brunswick. Eatery | Bar
| Terrace. And as well as some fancy new
interiors, there’s an equally fancy new menu.
Adios sports bar nachos – smashed avo and
poached eggs are taking over.
Run by Bull&Roo – of Tom&Serg, Common
Grounds and The Sum of Us fame – the
food is, naturally, the focus.
“Free from gimmicks, nothing forced,
Brunswick is guaranteed to be a social
dining haven for those who love food,” says
the team.
An all-day dining menu will be served from
noon, with dishes including turmeric-spiced
cauliower fritters with fried curry leaf and
rasam mayonnaise, charred octopus with
charcoal mayo, hazelnuts, chilli, lime and
nectarine, and wagyu tartare.
There’s even a pizza oven – for fancy
razor clam, summer trufe or veal belly
sourdough versions (there’s not a whiff of
deep-pan pepperoni here).
However, this aubergine dish is what
catches our eye. Grilled with salt and
scattered with barley and feta, it’s nished
off with a parsley and warm cumin dressing.
Veggie or not, this looks like a top dish.
As if we needed another excuse to visit
the mall.
Al Barsha (056 404 0685).
Morimoto
Does the long-anticipated Japanese restaurant from the TV chef rival the best in town? Not quite
Open Sun-Wed 6pm-2am,
Thu-Sat 6pm-3am. Licensed.
Renaissance Downtown
Hotel, Marasi Drive, Business
Bay (04 512 5577).
A
fter much hype and
no small delay, the
anticipated rst Dubai
restaurant from “Iron
Chef” Masaharu Morimoto has
nally opened. Initially expected
to launch in December 2017,
we’ve had to wait another four
months to nd out the answer
to the question on so many lips.
Will it top established rivals to
overnight become the city’s best
Japanese restaurant?
The short answer? It’s going to
take a while longer.
Indisputably ambitious,
Morimoto is huge. Spread over
multiple levels and outdoor
terraces (with superb, cityspanning
views), it’s a sprawling
restaurant, featuring raw and
teppanyaki bars in addition to
sizeable regular dining areas.
We’re almost certain we’re
over-ordering (in the name of
research, of course), but are
quickly assured it’s a perfect
amount for two hungry diners.
Within minutes, a tuna pizza
arrives. It’s beautiful, and its
future on the table looks bleak.
A cracker-crisp base bearing
an artistic arrangement of vivid
red sashimi, chopped olives,
raw slivers of
jalapeño and
onion, and a
light anchovy
aïoli, it’s
demolished
in less time
than it took
to arrive.
It’s one of
the best
dishes we’ve
eaten in the
city – which
THE BILL (for two)
1x tuna pizza
1x rock tempura
1x piece tuna sashimi
1x piece salmon sashimi
1x California rolls
1x soft shell crab rolls
1x black cod
1x sea urchin carbonara
1x duck confit fried rice
1x large still water
Total (incl service)
only serves to
underscore our
disappointment
with the rest of
the meal.
Sickly sweet
rock tempura
(including a
wasabi avour)
goes back untouched,
while awkwardly sized and overly
sticky California and soft shell
crab rolls lack both avour
and renement.
The rolls lack
flavour and
refinement
mains, the
sea urchin
carbonara
(a house
speciality, we’re
told) fares best.
It’s rich, creamy,
unctuous and
packed with
edamame
beans and veal
pancetta, but
not nearly enough
of the spiny
echinoderm to
deserve
its moniker.
The less
said about the
teeth-achingly
sweet black cod,
however, the better.
There’s clearly a pattern
emerging. After a drink at the
outdoor bar to take in the views,
we almost vibrate out of the
restaurant – on a sugar high, if
not a culinary one.
Among Dubai’s upmarket
Japanese restaurants, it has to
be noted that Morimoto is fairly
accessibly priced. But given its
avours are more fast-casual
than ne dining, perhaps it
should be.
THE BOTTOM LINE A slick spot
with stunning views, but not
quite the food anticipated.

Larte
Cool new Italian restaurant looks set to further lift the d3 dining scene
Open Sun-Thu 8am-10pm;
Fri-Sat noon-10pm. Licensed.
Building 10, d3, Ras Al Khor
Road (04 240 0441).
BAO WOW
If you’re looking for a huge selection of
bao buns, dim sum and sushi, head to
this funky new Asian spot in City Walk.
Open daily 11.30am-midnight. City
Walk, Al Safa Street (04 342 7044).
LARTE is a welcome addition to
the burgeoning d3 dining scene.
The Italian restaurant sprawls,
and if you go midweek in the
evening or at the weekend,
you can feel like you’re rattling
around it a bit – it’s empty on our
visit after work. This being in an
ofce district, for atmosphere, it
is perhaps best to book a table
during the week for lunch.
The space is cosy, though,
with bright yellow comfy benchstyle
seats and big orange chairs
to sink into. There are fun arty
elements in the décor, too, such
as the bookshelves made of
spikes protruding from the walls,
with plenty of art and design
books resting on them.
LARTE is stylish, but not
without substance. The menu is
full of Italian classics – pasta,
risotto, burrata and even cicchetti
(Venetian snacks). But it’s the
seared tuna fregola to start
that stands out. It’s tiny bites of
pasta in a zingy, lemony dressing
with olives, topped with slices
of blushing pink sh, perfectly
sealed. It’s a true delight.
Another highlight is the
oven-baked ziti ragu – a cheesy,
creamy indulgent pasta bake
with tomato sauce and a dash
of mince meat that lifts the dish
from delicious to sublime.
It might not be buzzing, but
with food this good and great
service, too, it’s well worth a visit.
THE BOTTOM LINE Great choice
for tasty, authentic Italian eats.
THE COLD SLICES
Pizza here – thin, crispy
and Italian in style – is
served in square slices
and priced by weight. This
chilled version is unusual
at first, but with its thinly
sliced salty salmon and
fresh rocket topping,
this is a pizza best
served cold.
Served at the regular
Staying near DXB? Tim Skinner picks out top spots for a drink near the airport
1 Biggles
Given that it’s located near
the airport, it’s somewhat
fitting that this pub – named after
the fictitious pilot and adventurer
– has a distinct aviation theme.
From the parachutist hanging
from the ceiling, to the aircraft
paraphernalia dotted around the
bar. Of the many British-themed
pubs in Dubai, this one stands out.
Even the bar staff are kitted out in
2Cactus Jack’s
This quirky Mexican
saloon-themed bar at the
Millennium Airport Hotel is your
archetypal theme bar. Think giant
cacti, horse saddles, terracotta
flooring, Latin mixed drinks and
everything quintessentially
Mexican. There are some bargain
drinks to be had, too. There’s
happy hour every Sunday offering
two-for-one on mixed drinks. There
are also deals on buckets of hops
and two-for-one on drinks, plus 20
percent off food from Sunday to
Wednesday for airline crew.
Open daily 6pm-3am. Millennium
Airport Hotel, Garhoud
(04 702 8855).
3 Cu-ba
At Jumeirah Creekside
Hotel, you’ll come across
a rooftop bar that has some
stunning views out across Dubai
Creek and, in the distance,
Downtown Dubai. For sundowners
it’s magnificent, and its outdoor
terrace defines it, so get in fast
before it’s a little too warm.
There’s low-slung, comfy sofas
and seating, and while drinks
are priced to match its premium
view, there’s a regular happy hour
that brings down the cost to a
reasonable amount.
Open Sat-Wed noon-2am; Thu-Fri
noon-3am. Jumeirah Creekside
Hotel, Garhoud (04 230 8458).
4 D70
This relatively unassuming
bar could easily be missed
if you’re wandering around
the grounds of the Millennium
Airport Hotel. A mixed drinks and
sparkling grape bar, this place
has the USP of having female-only
staff. The interior is plush, and the
terrace overlooks the central pool
and fountain of the hotel. There’s
a daily happy hour with two-forone
on select drinks, and it’s a
nice spot for a pre-dinner apéritif
if you’re in the Garhoud area and
want something a little fancy.
Open daily 6pm-2am. Millennium
Airport Hotel, Garhoud
perfect pit stop at Le Méridien
if you’re after a cracking bite to
A nook and crannies Irish
feel. Tonnes of screens line the
walls and you’ll also find the Celtic
supporters club here when kick-off
comes around. It’s great for the
match, and it’s a great spot for a
few casual drinks. This place can
get a bit rowdy at kick-off, but it
never falls short of being a place
that’s full of life, and it’s loads of
fun. Probably one that’s a bit more
exclusive for footie fans.
7The Irish Village
Ah, The Irish Village. This
longstanding Garhoud spot
Cactus Jack’s
dominates not only the area’s bar
scene, but a large part of Dubai’s
pub scene in general. It’s been
crowned our Pub of the Year on
numerous occasions, for many
a good reason. It’s home to one
of Dubai’s most wonderful pub
garden areas, which in cooler
weather are perfectly for lounging
around in with a pint of the black
stuff. You’ll be able to find a very
reasonably priced pint here, as
well as some great pub grub,
some huge live music acts, the
odd festival and many a brilliant
bash. The Irish Village has been
popular for more than 20 years, so
this is one to put on your list, now.
and riotous fun). Split over two
pub garden and terrace area
(which is home to some cracking
throughout the week, including
Trader Vic’s JBR
Spacious new branch of the world-famous Polynesian bar, but not as strong as others
Open Sun-Sat 5pm-3am.
Hilton Dubai Jumeirah, JBR
(04 318 2530).
With laid-back beach
vibes, tropical drinks
and old-school
Polynesian décor,
there are a lot of reasons to like
Trader Vic’s. Created by Vic “The
Trader” Bergeron in 1934, the
brand has become massively
popular all around the world, and
nowhere more so than in the
UAE. There are now six across
the emirates, with Trader Vic’s
JBR the newest addition to this
list, having opened in March.
We choose to get an early
evening drink, and the terrace
area is where it’s at. It’s packed,
and we have to wait indoors in
the (empty) bar until a space is
available for us to move to.
The terrace is a prime spot
on JBR with views across to
Ain Dubai. And if you’re not on
holiday you’ll feel like you are
once you’ve had your rst sip of
the bar’s signature Polynesian
mixed drinks.
Inside, the space is massive,
and disproportionately in favour
of dining. There’s a long, nonsmoking
bar, but not much space
to sit, which, when the weather
heats up, could
prove problematic.
There’s also
a stage for
live music.
Drinks are, as
you’d expect, on
the pricey side,
though there’s
a daily happy hour
from 5pm until
8pm, which helps.
The team has gone all out with
the interiors, with canoes from
the Taiwanese Orchid Island
hanging from the ceiling, tribal
masks from Papua New Guinea,
shing net orbs from Japan and
It’s massive,
but more
in favour
of dining
hand-crafted tiki
statues. It’s the
kitsch Trader
Vic’s you know
and love, though
there’s something
lacking that other
branches have.
Maybe it’s the
huge, empty dining
space that misses
that fun vibe, or maybe it’s the
service, which isn’t on point.
We’re not writing it off, but there
are better branches in the city.
THE BOTTOM LINE Has potential,
but is more restaurant than bar.
BAR
OF THE WEEK
BARASTI
The beach club is hosting a “SuperDome”
for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
From June 14. Le Méridien Mina
Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, King
Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street
(04 318 1313).
Don’t let the chilly reception
from the hostesses deceive you
– this might just be one of the
most fun, laid-back bars at the
northern end of the city.
Decked out in bold hues of
green, yellow, black and red,
with huge speakers lining the
walls and a medley of oldschool
reggae, dancehall and
R&B washing over the room,
it doesn’t get more Caribbean
than this on the coast of
the UAE. Fitting, perhaps,
for Time Out Dubai’s Best
North American & Caribbean
restaurant 2018. Despite the
eye-popping colour scheme, the
décor is actually fairly low-key,
with cafeteria-style seating
and benches for diners. A bar
snakes through the main (and
delightfully miniscule) dining
room, and it’s from here you
can – and absolutely should –
order some of Miss Lily’s’ famed
mixed drinks.
A pitcher of the “dutty” grape
in particular is the optimum
cooling antidote if you’ve
slathered too much scotch
bonnet mayo on your crispy
sh tacos (which you should
absolutely not miss).
Unlike the welcome on the
door (and over the phone, for
that matter), service at the bar
extremely aimable – so much so
you’ll be tempted to linger long
into the night.
And why not? There are far
inferior ways to while away
an evening…
THE BOTTOM LINE A must-try.
Film & TV
Life of the Party
PREVIEW
(18TC) Dir: Ben Falcone
Cast: Melissa McCarthy,
Maya Rudolph, Gillian Jacobs
Released: May 10
Film & TV
Isle of Dogs

(18TC) Director: Wes Anderson
Cast: Bryan Cranston, Greta
Gerwig, Edward Norton
Released: May 10
If Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr.
Fox was a joyful slice of whimsy,
his latest foray into stop-motion
creature features is a more
complex beast. Set in a nearfuture
Japan, it’s a dystopian,
tfully funny tale in which
crusading young people take on
a corrupt establishment. But it’s
mostly about the dogs.
Banished from Megasaki city
after outbreaks of snout fever and
dog u, cute canines are dumped
on Trash Island and left to fend for
themselves amid piles of garbage.
Chief’s (Bryan Cranston) story
kicks in when a 12-year-old
Japanese boy, Atari (Koyu Rankin),
lands a tiny plane on Trash Island,
intent on nding his banished
dog, Spots.
Atari enlists the help of a pack
to roam the dangerous island,
with Chief emerging as an unlikely
ally. Depicting the bond between
boy and dog is what Isle of Dogs
does best, and its focus is oddly
affecting. While the lm’s pace
is speedy to a fault, it pauses
just long enough to ponder on
the emotional contract between
master and pet.
Stylistically, it’s all unmistakably
Anderson, from the persistent
drumming of the taiko score
to the creaky mechanical
cable cars. He milks Japanese
culture for humour in ways that
feel affectionate if not always
respectful; accusations of
cultural appropriation won’t be
easy to shake. As ever with
this lmmaker, symmetry is a
hallmark, though both visually and
narratively, this busy lm lacks
the serenity and jaw-dropping
beauty of The Grand Budapest
Hotel. Nor is Isle of Dogs as wellrounded
as Fantastic Mr. Fox. But
as its curious canine cousin, it’s
a movie that Anderson fans won’t
want to miss – as if they could
anyway. Anna Smith
THE BOTTOM LINE A timely story
of refugee camaraderie.
Remember An Extremely Goofy
Movie? It’s when Goofy loses his
job and goes to the same college
and class as his son. This is
basically the premise of Melissa
McCarthy’s latest comedy,
except with humour that is
much more adult.
When her husband suddenly
dumps her, long-time dedicated
housewife Deanna (McCarthy)
goes back to college, feeling that
she’s missed out on the party
years of her life. She lands in the
same class as her daughter, who
is not fond of the idea. Plunging
headlong into the campus
experience, Deanna – now Dee
Rock – embraces freedom, fun
and frat boys on her own terms.
McCarthy’s string of comedies
have been hit or miss, with the
likes of Spy giving the crowd loads
to laugh at, and then Tammy being
a bit of a bore-fest. Unfortunately,
director Ben Falcone’s last
collaboration with McCarthy
was Tammy, so how much can
we expect from a storyline that
is sure to lead to immature
humour and extremely awkward
situations between a mother and
a daughter?
Although, judging by the trailer
alone, it seems like a McCarthy
ick that is sure to generate a few
laughs – something needed to
break up an action-lled summer.
Darragh Murphy
THE BOTTOM LINE A McCarthy
comedy sure to bring giggles.
Terminal
PREVIEW
(TBA) Director: Vaughn Stein
Cast: Margot Robbie,
Simon Pegg, Mike Myers
Released: May 10
There’s been a yearly inux of
stylish, neon-lit lms ever since
the spectacular Drive hit theatres
back in 2011. From the creepy
but visually stunning The Neon
Demon to the brutal nature of
Atomic Blonde, these lms were
a treat for the eyes, but often
didn’t have much substance
when it came to storyline.
Terminal could be treading
along these lines, as its trailer
is glorious to watch but hard to
follow. The lives of ve people –
a teacher, an enigmatic janitor,
a waitress leading a double life
and two assassins – intertwine
when a criminal mastermind
intent on revenge puts them in
a murderous situation. Expect
a lot of dark humour and stylish
cinematography, but a twisty
storyline that could come off too
difcult to follow.
But what’s this? Mike Myers
has nally made a return. His
last outing on the big screen was
Shrek Forever After in 2010. If
nothing else, we’re excited to see
him back. Darragh Murphy
THE BOTTOM LINE A stylish lm
that we hope has substance.

It’s hard to talk about Marvel’s biggest
movie to date without saying something
that might be a spoiler, but know this –
the ending will leave you in awe.

There’s a couple of entertaining and
chuckle-worthy scenes, but ultimately
the premise of this film could have
been summed up in five minutes.
the rich but spoiled Eugenio Derbez
into living a normal life.
With the director and writer of Juno
behind it, expect Tully to have a witty
and emotional script. See our interview
with Charlize Theron (page 32).
LAST CHANCE TO SEE
Finding Your Feet
Rampage
Truth or Dare
The Titan

An emotional ride filled with tears and
(sometimes inappropriate) laughter,
this unexpected gem will have you
smiling throughout the film.

Sometimes, what you need in your life
are some monsters destroying a city for
an absolutely nonsensical reason, and
Rampage delivers on those fronts.

Hollywood seems to put the horror
spin on everything these days, now
including party games. A silly premise
with simple jump scares. We’ll pass.

To survive space exploration, a military
family takes part in a experiment of
genetic evolution. A fun sci-fi flick that
unfortunately doesn’t quite work.
Time Out Loves
Sniffing out a
bargain at the Spice Souk
Whether you love cooking, haggling or just exploring a part of the city
that’s not dominated by skyscrapers, a visit to the Spice Souk should
be on your list. Roaming through the narrow alleyways, packed full of
bags of vibrantly coloured spices, this is a spot in Old Dubai that’s good
for visitors and residents alike. You’ll be bowled over by the warming
scents of the spices and friendly, market-style vibe. Hop on an abra
across the Creek to round off your trip, before you go home and cook
up an aromatic storm.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Spice up your life.
