Spring 2018 Update
NBAC’s longstanding pursuit of
excellence – the one you know
and were a part of, continues! Our
swimmers and alums have been hard
at work this season.
From Maryland Senior Championships, to 14 &
Unders to Juniors and “B”
Championships, NBAC continues
to be the top team
in Maryland and one of the
country’s most successful.
At the Speedo Junior
Nationals, XXX and XXX
finished in first in the XXX. Overall, the team
had an outstanding performance. Our women’s
team placed second, and the team as a whole
finished third.
At World Championships in Budapest last
summer,
NBAC was
represented by
two swimmers,
Easop Lee and
Chase Kalisz.
Chase swam
his way to
the top in the
200 and 400
IM claiming
the World
Championship,
while Easop
finished in the
top eight with a
best time in the
200 freestyle.
NBAC is also known for two of the world’s top
Paralympians, Jessica Long – the second most
decorated U.S. paralympian
of all time, and
gold medalist Becca
Meyers. This year was
no different for these
two. Both took home
golds at the World Para
Swimming in Mexico
City. Becca won a gold
in the 400 free, 2 silvers,
and a bronze while Jessica took home eight
gold medals.
And, it wasn’t just our current swimmers making
an impact this year.
At Worlds, we were
proud to see our alums
in the line-up. Cierra
Runge brought home the
Ana Bogdanovski represented
Macadonia,
and Mohamed Hussein
represented Egypt. Congrats
to everyone in our
NBAC family!
gold as part of the World
Championship Women’s
4 x 200 freestyle relay.
Also, swimming in worlds,

won seven World titles
(four individual) in her
career while twice breaking
the world record in the
women’s 400 IM.
Senior Coach Paul Yetter was inducted in the Maryland
Swimming Hall of Fame
in May of 2017
Once NBAC, Always NBAC!
Alums are the people that age groups swimmers look
up to. They are the legends that the 6, 7, and 8-yearolds
hope to become, they are
the swimmers that paved the
way and give them confidence
that they can do the same thing.
They may be Olympians who
won a medal or maybe they
swam in college – to age groupers
it doesn’t matter, these
swimmers are the holy grail,
the ones they are in awe of.
This year, one such swimmer
and alum returned to the NBAC pool to support the
team at its Candy Cane Meet. It was 1996 Olympic Gold
Medalist, Beth Botsford. Botsford who is a coach at the
University of Arizona gave our swimmers a pep talk,
helped time the meet, and posed for pictures.
Polly Winde Surhoff - The Ellicott City native started
setting swimming records as an 8-year-old and never
looked back. To this day, she continues
to swim regularly, having most
recently placed third in the Great
Chesapeake Bay swim this past June,
at age 52.
Surhoff is a three-time NCAA All-
American with the University of
North Carolina and was a member
of the U.S. National Team. She is the
cofounder of Pathfinders for Autism,
Maryland’s largest autism organization. In addition to
being a former NBAC swimmer, she is also a former
NBAC parent. Congratulations!
Michael Phelps - Michael and wife Nicole announced
the birth of their second
child, son Beckett Richard.
The couple’s baby boy was
born on Monday, Feb. 12.
The new addition joins
21-month-old big brother
Boomer Robert.

NBAC Senior Class
Our swimmers aren’t just good in the pool. Here’s a
look at the Class of 2018’s college commitments.
As we celebrate the swimmers who will soon join the
ranks of alums, we asked other alums what their favorite
NBAC memory was and what advice they’d give
graduates embarking on a new journey.
