‘Hamilton’-inspired event supports
scholarships for local women
North suburban sorority
alumnae celebrated the
past, present and future at
their annual Scholarship
Dinner Benefit April 26 at
the Highland Park Country
Club.
The event is the largest
yearly fundraiser held by
the Chicago North Shore
Alumnae Panhellenic Association,
a group of alumnae
chapter delegates from
14 national sororities.
Each year, the benefit
attracts 100 to 150 attendees
and raises more than
$5,000 to provide college
scholarships for young
women.
The money raised at the
event comes through both
registration fees and a silent
auction and raffle of
items donated by the participating
alumnae chapters
and individual members.
This year’s entertainment
was connected to the
popular musical “Hamilton.”
Dramatist Barbara
Rinella, of Kenilworth,
and two historical reenactors,
David Jahntz, of
Geneva, Illinois, and Jim
Nawrocki, of Lisle, Illinois
gave the audience a taste
of 18th-century America.
Rinella became Alexander
Hamilton’s wife, Eliza,
for the evening and talked
about her life, based on the
book, “The Hamilton Affair”
by Elizabeth Cobbs.
“I feel the event went
really well,” Jill Schmidt,
president of the CNSAPA
said. “It’s a fun evening for
women on the North Shore
to socialize while giving
back and helping other
women.”
“With the increasing
rates of college these days,
every little bit helps,” she
continued.
Veronica Toussaint, who
serves as vice president
for the CNSAPA, was also
happy with the event and
the work the organization
is doing.
“I made sure that all
schools in the north suburbs
received the notification,”
Toussaint said.
“There is a residency requirement
that girls must
live in a suburb north of
Chicago. I have worked
diligently to establish a
rapport with each school
where our scholarship application
is sent.”
The 2018 scholarship
recipients are Kathleen
Lyn Lund, Bridget Marie
Horvath and Nora Elizabeth
Tucker of Libertyville
High School; and Frances
Ann Ferolo, of Vernon
Hills High School.
Eugenie Morton, of
Northwestern, and Anna
Faber, of Lake Forest College,
received sponsorships
to the 2017 UIFI.
CNSAPA is hosting
two Sorority Information
Nights in May open to
all 2018 graduating high
school seniors and their
parents. The first is May
21 at the Sacred Heart
Church Parish Center in
Winnetka, and the second
is May 30 at the First Presbyterian
Church Chapel in
Libertyville.
