How will <strong>Year</strong> 9 be different to <strong>Year</strong> 8?<br />

Deeper learning<br />

• Two hours a week of History and Geography<br />

• Three hours a week of either French or German<br />

• One and a half hours a week of two of Art, Drama or<br />

Music<br />

• One hour a week of PSHE<br />

• Same hours in English, Maths, Science, Philosophy,<br />

PE and Technology.<br />

What is <strong>Year</strong> 8 <strong>Choices</strong>?<br />

• Gives you more hours to dedicate to the<br />

language or arts subjects they may study in<br />

KS4.<br />

• Your preferred language<br />

• Your preferred two arts subjects<br />

• Opt into Computer Science twilight course<br />

What if classes are full?<br />

• We will try to fit preferred choices<br />

• If a subject is oversubscribed, decisions will be<br />

made on the following basis:<br />

1. Student attitude to learning in the subject<br />

2. Teacher recommendation<br />

What should you consider when<br />

making your choices?<br />

• No language or arts subject is easier than any other<br />

• Preferences should not be based on friends’ choices or any<br />

attempt to pre-guess who might be teaching a particular<br />

subject<br />

• Possibility to return to a language or arts subject in Y10 if not<br />

taking in <strong>Year</strong> 9<br />

• Spring report and the subject pages of the school website<br />

How do I state my preferences?<br />

• First, discuss this at home and with your tutor. Letters will be<br />

sent home by email<br />

• Speak to Mr Allman or Mr Sills if you have any concerns<br />

• Complete the electronic reply form by Friday 25 th May 2018<br />

(<strong>Year</strong> 8 Choice Reply Form)<br />

• Anyone not replying by the deadline, will be allocated to a<br />

group decided by the school<br />

• School has the final decision<br />
