Annual Conference 2018 Welcome to the 37th COBIS Annual Conference Dear COBIS Friends and Colleagues, Fantastic, you’ve arrived here in London, safe and sound. So, whether you’ve joined us at Conference before or this is perhaps your first time, on behalf of the COBIS Executive Team and COBIS Board, thank you for being with us – an extremely warm COBIS welcome to each and every one of you! Writing this introduction, in equal measure, I’m energised and inspired by the diversity of locations from which you will all have travelled. As we share one another’s company over the next few days, you’ll certainly enjoy meeting new and familiar friends from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. As the premier association for international British schools overseas, our truly supportive network and global footprint are two of our most attractive unifiers and strengths. Like you, I feel delighted and privileged to contribute to, and to be part of all things COBIS. As you’ll be aware, COBIS is very much a student-centred association and Leading Learning is at the core of what we do. This is reflected through our high-quality student activities and competitions, our professional development and research projects, our targeted lobbying and representational activities, and of course through our unshakable commitment to reducing risk to children and young people by the promotion of safeguarding and child protection. With that in mind, I am confident that the balance and content of our conference programme and shoulder courses will provide you and the learning communities that you serve with a whole host of positive challenges and influences. Conference also allows us the opportunity to celebrate the many achievements of those in our sector and to highlight recent positive developments within our association. Areas that we’ll update you on include the COBIS Patron’s Accreditation and Compliance scheme and our work connected to Teacher Supply. Being a responsive and consultative organisation, we also want to hear from you. Your voice is valued and important. Sharing your thoughts couldn’t be easier and can be done through our designated regional COBIS workshops, Twitter, or good old conversational exchange! In addition to participants representing early years settings, schools, universities, ministries of education and other government departments, we are joined by over 100 educational suppliers who export learning resources and services on a global scale. Whether it’s over breakfast, tea breaks, lunch or perhaps at one of the receptions or dinners, we have ample opportunity to talk and learn from each another. Just as I started by thanking each and every one of you for joining us at Conference, now that you’re here, I’m sure that you’ll join me in thanking our speakers, workshop leaders, hotel colleagues and of course, the enormously talented COBIS Executive Team and COBIS Board who all work so hard to prepare and deliver this event, in addition to all the other fabulous COBIS activities throughout the year. You all do a tremendous job, which is much appreciated. Thank you. So, as the 2018 COBIS Annual Conference gets up and running, together let’s relax and enjoy the experience. As Leaders of Learning, and for the benefit of those whose lives we enrich through education, here’s to the flourishing world of high quality internationally British education worldwide. Annual Conference 2018 Annual Conference 2018 A Message from the Chairman Welcome to the 2018 Annual Conference! Dear Friends, Guests and Colleagues, What makes our students stimulated, hungry to know, creative, challenged, healthy, happy, safe? Where can we find high performance, and how do we know? What makes our schools well led and well governed? If you´re interested in these questions, you´ve come to right conference. We´ll explore them together – with the help of some of the best educational practitioners and global thinkers. Around it all, a wonderful network of colleagues and friends to share ideas and to offer support; and one of the largest exhibitions of educational services and goods for British international schools that you’ll find anywhere in the world. Our AGM this year will also be different: not the usual boring agendas and written reports, but a much more interesting and graphic insight into what COBIS has been doing for you this year. And it is open to guests, too: why not? For COBIS has been extraordinarily active on your behalf – with CPD for more than four thousand of your staff, online and in person in many countries and regions, with activities for several thousands of your students, and representing your interests with governments both in and also well beyond the UK. Of particular interest will be our research into the supply of teachers for British schools overseas. This is perhaps the greatest challenge for all our schools now and in the coming decade. We now have good data, and good ideas – and a growing capacity to influence on your behalf. We can promise you a busy, useful and exciting few days. I look forward to meeting you.
