Area teens, adults help prep Winnetka beaches
The dismal spring
weather makes it hard to
believe that beach season
is here, but that didn’t stop
Winnetka Park District
employees and staff from
devoting most of their day
on Saturday, May 19, preparing
Winnetka’s sacred
waterfront land so guests
may dig their toes in clean
sand beginning this Memorial
Day weekend.
The sixth annual Winnetka
Beach Cleanup was
originally spearheaded by
the current Superintendent
of Recreation, John Shea,
to unite staff for the good
of the community at the
start of each beach season.
“This is a great way
for us to bring the staff
together before they officially
start their duties next
week,” Shea said. “When
families arrive, starting
next weekend, they’ll have
a beachfront that is clean
and ready for them to enjoy.
Maintenance of our
beaches is an ongoing process,
and today is just an
example of what we do all
year long to make sure our
waterfront is a safe and enjoyable
place for residents
to relax.”
Recreation Supervisor
Kevin Rutherford oversaw
the cleanup occurring at
Tower Road, Maple, Elder
and Lloyd beaches, helping
his young staff dispose
of garbage, sweep and
shovel sand, and prepare
the walkways for their incoming
guests.
“The beaches in Winnetka
are truly our best natural
said. “Watching everyone
Rutherford and Shea
supervised scores of teens
— many from New Trier
High School, including
Carolyn Gentry, of Kenilworth;
Kelsey Carroll,
of Northfield; and Andrew
Balestrery, of Glencoe
— who got down to business,
sweeping walkways
and shoveling sand off the
paths.
New Trier senior Brendan
Kelly, of Wilmette,
who will man the boat
launch at Lloyd Beach
this summer, helped load
boats onto their designated
racks, working with his
colleagues to see the job
was done quickly and efficiently.
“It’s been a busy morning
of cleaning up litter
and making sure the stairs,
walkways and entry points
are clear and free of debris
before preparing boats
and putting them into the
racks, so that everyone
is ready to go next weekend,”
Kelly said.
After a day of hard work,
staff tended to the grill in
time for a cookout to celebrate
a job well done,
the impending summer
sun, long hot days and the
chance to enjoy the splendor
of Lake Michigan and
the Winnetka waterfront.
