UNMET FRIENDS
&
PEOPLE OF INFLUENCE
Sister Carol Regan
A highlight of the Valentine Social was Sr. Carol Regan’s presentation
on the lives of two important Holy Union figures: Father Jean Baptiste
Debrabant, congregation founder and Mother Marie Helena, SUSC who
led the original group of sisters to the United States from Europe.
Sr. Carol, who entitled her presentation, “Unmet Friends and Persons of
Influence” explained why the Holy Union Giving Societies are named in
their honor. She first shared why she chose this title. An “unmet friend”
is someone who although you have never met, is a person you “know’;
a person whose story influences your life though you don’t know him/her
personally. A “person of influence” is someone whose words echo in our
hearts and minds, for good or ill; whose words/stories linger, long after
their deaths, in the hearts and minds of a living person.” Although both
Fr. Debrabant and Mother Helena died long ago, they are truly unmet
friends and persons of influence for each Holy Union Sister.
