Fidelity
HOLY UNION SISTERS
Leadership Team Reflection
In this issue of “Response” we focus on the sisters’ life-long fidelity to Mission
Article 62 of our Holy Union Constitutions reminds us that
Our participation in the Community mission lasts all
through life. When we are limited in active apostolic service
by age or illness, we believe that we contribute to the fruitfulness
of the common mission through our prayer, presence
and suffering.
Earlier this year, within a month’s time, we Holy Union Sisters
experienced the coming to completion of the lives of
four of our Sisters, all in their 90’s. The total fidelity of each
of these women to our mission throughout their lives was
evident in the way they lived and in the remembrances
shared at the Memorial Prayer prior to their funerals.
Sister Alice Paré, a woman of wisdom and
deep faith, who died at age 97, was the
oldest Sister in our Holy Union Province.
Her kind ways and positive attitude,
made a lasting impression on all who
were blessed to know her.
Former students of over 50 years ago remembered
how her attentiveness and sensitivity to them made a
difference in their lives. She was truly a woman of deep conviction
and prayer, always interested in the life and mission,
not only of our United States Province but of the whole Congregation.
Even as her sight and hearing were failing, she
continued daily to produce creative handiwork which supported
local and mission needs.
Sister Lorraine MacPherson’s presence at
Jeanne Jugan Residence in Pawtucket, RI
during the past year as well as her many
years at Forand Manor in Central Falls, RI
impacted the lives of many within the communities
in which she lived as well as beyond
them. Even as she faced mobility issues in later
years, she poured her energy into nurturing connections
with former students, taking an active role in civic affairs
and bringing her faith and compassion to the bereavement
ministry at a local funeral home. Lorraine was a life-long
advocate for life and justice, for which she was recognized by
both the city of Central Falls and the State of Rhode Island at
her funeral services.
Sister Pauline Dufour’s active presence at
Mary Immaculate Residence in Lawrence,
Massachusetts touched the lives of many
residents. Her quiet and compassionate
outreach brought comfort to so many who
resided in the apartments, assisted living
facility and the skilled care facility, all one
campus. Her days were filled with caring
encounters, bringing comfort, encouragement and a listening
heart for stories and worries just waiting to be shared. Her
visits always ended with a special treat … Hershey kisses!
Sister Therese Landry, long-time resident
of the memory care unit at Catholic Memorial
Home in Fall River, Massachusetts,
died peacefully there in January. She spent
her days in prayer and quiet presence
reaching out in her gentle way to those with
whom she shared life in the unit. Her smile
and spirit of gratitude made a difference to us, her
Sisters, and to residents and staff, especially those of the
activities department. Her simplicity and contemplative spirit
reflected that of her patron saint, Therese of Lisieux., the saint
of the little way. Her wonder, joy and love of children were evident
whenever they were present as visitors or at events
sponsored by Catholic Memorial. Her presence is truly missed.
Complete biographies of these sisters may be found
on the province website:
http://www.holyunionsisters.org/in-loving-memory
These four Sisters remind us of what the lifelong fidelity
to mission really means. Their daily lives made visible the
call of our recent General Chapter to:
witness to the life-giving presence & compassion of God
nurture a deeply contemplative attitude which leads us
to union with God, ourselves, others and the whole
community of life
reverence the dignity, diversity and vulnerability of all.
May their lives and those of all faithful ones who have
gone before us inspire our own life-long commitment
as partners in mission to be a presence of God’s
unifying love. Know
that we are very
grateful for your
ongoing support.

Director’s Column
Patricia Butler, SNDdeN
Mission Advancement Director
Much of my work in the Mission Advancement
Office depends on the distilling process. No, I
don’t operate a still on the side! Rather, from the
different encounters with Holy Union donors, a
phone call, a personal visit, an event, a meeting,
I take the elements that make these relationships
with Holy Union donors what is life-giving and
energizing. Holy Union Sisters have attracted
many people to the following of the Gospel and
Christian living.
Specifically, the Holy Union Sisters through
education in its widest sense,
assist the development of Gospel values
by promoting self-acceptance,
concern for others, and an
understanding of the dignity of human living
as exemplified in Christ Himself.
So many times in reflecting on the events of our
last year, what stands out for me is a comment
by an attendee at the 130th Anniversary Gala
held at Lombardo’s. I heard this same comment
by others who had no prior contact with the Holy
Union family. The repeated comment was,
“The love and warmth in the room was tangible.
The warmth of the relationships was clearly
evident.” It is a way of being that lifts people’s
spirits. As I think about these comments, about
our gathering on that Sunday in October, 2017,
this scripture quote came to my mind, “See how
they love one another.”
The Holy Union Sisters are most grateful for your
faithful participation in the call of the Gospel to
which they and each of us is called.
FREQUENTLY
ASKED
QUESTIONS
Jane E. Sullivan, Esq.
Q. What is a qualified charitable distribution?
A. A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is an
otherwise taxable distribution from an IRA (INDIVIDUAL
RETIREMENT ACCOUNT) or 401K (company sponsored
retirement account) that is paid directly from the retirement
account to a qualified charity. Such a distribution
is not taxed to the account owner or the qualified charity.
Q. Is the Holy Union Sisters a qualified charity?
A. Yes, the Holy Union Sisters is a 501(c)(3) charity,
and thus qualifies to be the recipient of a QCD from your
retirement account. Neither you nor the Holy Union Sisters
would be subject to income tax on a direct distribution
from your account, and the Sisters are free to put the distribution
to use in furthering their charitable mission.
Q. Can a QCD satisfy your required minimum
distribution?
A. When you reach age 70½, you must take an annual
required minimum distribution (RMD) from all of your
qualified retirement accounts. A QCD can satisfy all or
part of the amount of your RMD, up to a maximum of
$100,000. The QCD must be paid directly from your account
to the charity, so a QCD must be coordinated carefully
with the account or plan administrator and the
charity. For more specific advice, you should consult your
tax advisor or CPA before proceeding.
GENERAL CHAPTER
"The gift of internationality in our Congregation
brings with it a broadening of vision
and a deeper sense of community with the world."
ARTICLE 80, HOLY UNION CONSTITUTIONS
The Holy Union Sisters gathered in Ireland this past
summer for their General Chapter, an event that
happens every six years. Representatives from all
the geographic areas of the Congregation reflected
back on the past six years and together discerned
ways forward.
They elected a General Council consisting of a Congregational
Leader and three Councilors. Those sisters
came from the four continents where Holy
Union is present. Sr. Paula Coelho, Superior General
is from the United States, Sr. Teresa Finn from Ireland,
Sr. Caroline Njah from Cameroon and Sr. Ilsa
Jofré from Argentina. They took up residence in
Rome in mid-November where they spent a time of
transition with the previous General Council.
Their first communication to the Congregation took
the form of a brief video in which they greeted all
the sisters in their respective languages. This enabled
each viewer to put a face with the name of
each of their elected leaders.
Since so many General Councils reside in Rome,
there are often gatherings with presentations on
topics that are helpful to sisters in congregational
leadership. Soon after they arrived in Rome, the
General Council attended a meeting for new General
Councilors where they had the opportunity to meet
other sisters and learn of organizations in Rome that
will help them to carry out their mission.
The General Chapter drew up a Vision Statement
and with this as a basis, the General Council has
drawn up a schedule of initial visits to all the geographic
areas of the congregation. Because French
and Spanish as well as English are spoken throughout
the congregation, learning these languages has
become a priority. Sr. Caroline has enrolled in a
Spanish class via Skype and Sr. Ilsa is taking an English
course in Rome. Sr. Ines Gutiérrez, a native of
Spain spent a month in the Generalate where she
worked with Srs. Paula and Teresa in preparation for
their visit to Argentina.
The Holy Union Constitutions describe our internationality
as a “gift, which brings with it a broadening
of vision and a deeper sense of community with the
world”. Srs. Paula, Teresa, Caroline and Ilsa by their
“Yes” to Congregational leadership for the next six
years have joyfully accepted this gift with all its challenges
and rewards.

Agnes Amaral Manger
Although I had never met
Agnes (Amaral) Manger, I
learned of her proposed
generosity to Holy Union
some months before she
died. About a year before that,
she had named the Holy Union
Sisters in her estate plan. I learned from sisters who
had taught with her, that Agnes had been a Holy
Union Sister for many years. In 2011 in preparation
for the celebration of 125 years in the United States,
the Mission Advancement Office reached out to former
Holy Union Sisters and graduates of elementary
and high schools where the sisters had taught. Agnes
Manger was one of those who responded to this
invitation. She remained an active donor to Holy
Union until her death in October of 2016. By including
Holy Union in her estate plan, she continues to show
her love and gratitude to the sisters.
Holy Union Associates
Like many Religious Congregations in North America, the
Holy Union Sisters are experiencing an increase in the number
of Associate members. We want to share with our readers
what an Associate is and what it means to be a Associate.
We posed these three questions
to Holy Union Associates
to learn more about
why they have chosen this path.
Janice Gendron
Elena Gontza
Catherine Gregory
What attracted you to the
Holy Union Sisters and their Charism?
Ayer-Shirley Associate Janice Gendron: I had the Holy Union
Sisters in grammar school and have known them for years.
Persons preparing to become Associates
go through a period of initial formation,
usually lasting a year. Unlike sisters who
are vowed members and make a lifetime
commitment, Associates do not live in
community and make a commitment for
one year at a time. They attend meetings
of associates and vowed members in
different geographic areas of the province
where they study the history and spirit of
Holy Union while learning how to deepen
their Baptismal commitment. Associates
strive to participate more fully in the
charism and mission of Holy Union.
New York Associate Elena Gontza: Their deep spirituality, their
compassion, their resilience and humanity. The sisters work hard, but they
know how to enjoy life. They are happy, funny and know how to have a
good time.
Ayer-Shirley Associate Catherine Gregory: I enjoy being part
of the faith community with the Holy Union Sisters. I especially like the quote
in the introduction to the Associate guidelines: “It (the charism) is expressed
in multiple ways by those individuals who, in their walk of life, strive for the
perfection of charity, and thereby help others to grow.” This has special meaning
for me to be able to share my faith and belief with others who struggle to believe.
Maryland Associate Kathi Jeffra: I was originally attracted by
the internationality and the rich and broad context it brings to each local
ministry. As I met more sisters and listened to their wisdom as members
of an international congregation, I fell in love with their living out of our
baptismal call. That we are called to be at the heart of the world revealing
God's love seems so ordinary but is actually radical and profound.

Associates are women and men who choose
to make a public and formal commitment
(covenant) to embody the charism and mission
of a religious congregation within the associate’s
primary life vocation in society for
the sake of all of God’s creation.
Empty
have no Ears
ABOVE: Associates often find ways to live out their commitment. For
Lent, the Tewksbury, MA Associates enlisted the aid of St. William
parishioners to raise funds to assist the children in the primary school
staffed by Holy Union Sisters in Massea, Cameroon. The Associates
explained that the school provides meals for the students and asked
for financial assistance. They prepared a display of the school in
Massea with the Cameroonian saying: Empty Stomachs have no Ears.
Parishioners responded most generously and one parishioner
matched the amount collected that weekend. Associate Janice Corbin
speaks at Sunday mass.
What ties you to the
Holy Union Sisters?
How does being an Associate influence
your daily life and spirituality?
Janice Gendron: It helps me to keep closer to God each day. I’m
a better person for it.
Elena Gontza: Sisters live their charism of union, inclusion,
wholeness, harmony with God, with themselves and others, trying to
bring Christ’s vision of a world united in love in their daily living. As
an Associate I try to model my life after them.
Catherine Gregory: As I wear my Associate pin each day, I am
reminded of the Holy Union Charism and mission, “to be at the heart
of the world revealing God’s love.”
Kathi Jeffra: Love, unconditional love. That may sound corny, but
it’s true. I don’t see the sisters and associates as often as I would like,
but they always graciously open their arms and homes and hearts to
me whenever I am able to be with them. Sister Nancy Stiles came into
my life at a time when I was a young mother grieving the loss of my
own mother. She became a life-long friend, and her Holy Union Sisters
have become my sisters.
Darlene Johnson: We are family working together, looking deeper
into ourselves, and helping others to evolve.
Janice Gendron: It helps me to help people in need. It’s a big
help to my spiritual life, keeping God in my life.
Elena Gontza: I try to model my life after the sisters’ way of living. I volunteer
to help people with Alzheimers and their families in their homes and
volunteer at a hospital. I try to give financial assistance to sisters’ ministries.
I try to deepen my spirituality by trying different methods of praying.
Catherine Gregory: Since becoming an Associate I spend more
time in meditation and prayer in the morning and at the end of the day.
Kathi Jeffra: The Holy Spirit has always guided my ministry. Before
meeting Holy Union it sometimes seemed random. Now I have
learned to follow the example of many of the sisters and increasingly
trust that, especially when I cannot see it, the Spirit has a purpose for
me and for those whom She places before me. My prayer life has become
richer, more inclusive and much more simple. I focus less on what
to say to God, and more on what God is saying to me.
Darlene Johnson: I am more aware of my choices and activities.
I feel closer to God and welcome more conversation with him on a daily
basis.

Sr. Ruth Beaudoin
Sr. Rita Beaudoin
There is an article in the Holy Union Constitutions, the
sisters’ rule of life, that states: “Our participation in the
Community mission lasts all through life.” Just as they
answered “yes” to the initial call to follow Jesus through
religious life, many sisters find creative ways to live out
this article as they age and are no longer in full time
ministries.
How is this happening today? Srs. Rita and Ruth Beaudoin,
along with other residents of Mary Immaculate
Residence in Lawrence, MA participated in a research
project from Harvard University. The authors of the
study asked them to complete a questionnaire which
will help the researchers to glean more information
about what makes older persons more or less possible
candidates for Alzheimers, which affects so many older
Americans today.
MINISTRY
OF PRESENCE
Sisters at The Landmark Residence in Fall River make issues
of justice part of their daily prayer as they gather
each afternoon. At their daily Mass, they often ask the
priest celebrating to offer prayers to mark world days such
as for an end to Human Trafficking, and Prayers for Peace
which Pope Francis has requested of all the faithful.
Sisters can be found volunteering in hospitals and nursing
homes, offering a listening ear and heart, praying
with patients who are ill and have no family members
to visit them.
It is through these various opportunities that Holy Union
Sisters continue to say “yes” to what God asks of them
each day and participate in the community’s Mission in
ways they would not have imagined in their youth.
Mass of
Gratitude
On April 18th, 2018 a Mass of Gratitude was celebrated at the Landmark in Fall
River, MA for our donors, families and friends. All the intentions sent by donors
were placed near the altar in the Landmark Chapel and lifted up in prayer during
this Mass. Msgr. John Perry, during the Prayers of the Faithful, mentioned in particular
the intentions sent by benefactors. As people were gathered , a special
tribute intention was sent by a long time benefactor that explains why our donor
relationships are so lasting was read. Dr. Michael Pappafagos, Lighthouse School,
Inc. writes “May all the Holy Union Sisters be blessed by God’s grace as a testimony to their
longstanding devotion, sacrifice and unrelenting work that has elevated the lives of so many.”

UNMET FRIENDS
&
PEOPLE OF INFLUENCE
Sister Carol Regan
A highlight of the Valentine Social was Sr. Carol Regan’s presentation
on the lives of two important Holy Union figures: Father Jean Baptiste
Debrabant, congregation founder and Mother Marie Helena, SUSC who
led the original group of sisters to the United States from Europe.
Sr. Carol, who entitled her presentation, “Unmet Friends and Persons of
Influence” explained why the Holy Union Giving Societies are named in
their honor. She first shared why she chose this title. An “unmet friend”
is someone who although you have never met, is a person you “know’;
a person whose story influences your life though you don’t know him/her
personally. A “person of influence” is someone whose words echo in our
hearts and minds, for good or ill; whose words/stories linger, long after
their deaths, in the hearts and minds of a living person.” Although both
Fr. Debrabant and Mother Helena died long ago, they are truly unmet
friends and persons of influence for each Holy Union Sister.
An “unmet friend” is someone who although
you have never met, is a person you
“know’; a person whose story influences
your life though you don’t know him/her
personally.
Sr. Carol then wove the story of each of their
lives into the beginnings and development of
the Congregation in Europe and the United
States. As a priest in St. Jacques Parish in Douai
in northern France, Fr. Debrabant learned of four
needle workers who attended mass in the parish and
taught catechism and needle skills to neighborhood girls.
They were our first “Partners in Mission”. Fr. Debrabant
believed strongly in the need for Christian education and
established small schools staffed by women of his fledgling
religious congregation wherever he ministered.
Palmyre Daumerie was born in 1849 in a small town in
Belgium, near the French border. She attended the parish
school staffed by members of the new congregation of
Dames de la Sainte Union. At sixteen, she entered the
Congregation and probably received the habit and her
religious name, Marie Helena, from Fr. Debrabant.
FATHER JEAN BAPTISTE DEBRABANT
MOTHER MARIE HELENA, SUSC
In 1886 she was chosen to
lead a group of ten sisters
to Sacred Heart Parish,
Fall River, MA to teach
the children of Irish immigrants.
Before her death in
1937, Mother Helena established
schools in MA, RI, NY
and MD.
Sr. Carol concluded by asking her
audience if these ’persons of influence’,
Fr. Debrabant and the first group of needle workers
in Douai, the nine sisters who accompanied Mother Helena
to Fall River and all the women who have ever been Holy
Union Sisters, as well as their friends, benefactors, associates
and colleagues were not indeed “All persons of
influence and unmet friends” to one another? To which
those listening responded with a resounding “Yes”.
Glimpses from the Valentine Social.
Valentine
Social
The intent of the Valentine Social was to have a simple gathering around Valentine’s
Day when people might have wanted a break from the winter doldrums and enjoy
a gathering in the Holy Union spirit.
Individual donors, business sponsors, sisters, associates and friends combined energies
and generosity to provide an event that even a sultry, rainy day could not
keep people from enjoying. Judging from the above photos, all the goals of this
Holy Union gathering were met.

DOROTHY VAILL FUND
Thanks to a generous bequest from the estate of
Dorothy Vaill, a graduate of Sacred Hearts Academy in
Fall River, the Holy Union Sisters established the
Dorothy Vaill Memorial Fund in 2013. Recalling
Dorothy’s life, which was devoted to teaching, the
Fund’s mission is to support learning opportunities for
children and women who value education but do not
have needed financial resources.
A review committee has awarded financial assistance
based on demonstrated need to children and women
from the six states where Holy Union Sisters are currently
in ministry. The fund assists children in Catholic
elementary and high schools as well as women in
higher education or job training programs.
When families learn that they have received tuition
grants, the committee often receives notes of thanks
from the students as well as their parents or guardians.
School administrators also express their gratitude for
this help to support their institutions. Having received
this assistance, some students express the wish to be
able to support the education of future generations of
young people.
Many children who receive awards live in single parent
homes. Some live with grandparents or guardians. The
common thread in all these applications is a strong desire
for the child to attend Catholic schools and have
the opportunity for a good education.
On March 3rd, the anniversary of Dorothy Vaill’s death,
the Holy Union Sisters remember her generosity at a
mass at The Landmark in Fall River. The sisters are
grateful that Dorothy Vaill’s bequest enables many
youngsters and women to improve their lives.
As women of the church and members of an international congregation, we are called to ‘be at the heart of the
