Consuming Our Way to Recovery Lizabeth Cohen Harvard University 2012 Liz Cohen of Harvard University presented the ninth John O’<strong>Sullivan</strong> Memorial Lecture. In the years after World War II, Americans believed that full participation in the mass consumer society promised widespread prosperity, as well as the long sought-after goals of a freer and more equal nation. High consumption remained the reigning strategy for achieving a democratic and affluent America until the Great Recession, beginning in 2008, raised fundamental questions. Not only did rising home foreclosures and growing personal debt threaten the viability of the “Consumers’ Republic,” but it was not clear how, if not through greater consumption, the United States would work its way out of recession. Cohen is Dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University and an expert on 20th century America social and political history. She is author of “Making a New Deal: Industrial Workers in Chicago, 1919-1939,” which won the Bancroft Prize in American History and the Philip Taft Labor History Book Award and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and “A Consumers’ Republic: The Politics of Mass Consumption in Postwar America,” which explores how an economy of such consumption shaped social life, culture and politics following World War II. 10
The Role of Diplomacy in 20 th Century American Foreign Policy 2013 Jeffrey Morton Florida Atlantic University Jeffrey Morton of FAU presented the tenth John O’<strong>Sullivan</strong> Memorial Lecture on the Role of Diplomacy in 20th Century American Foreign Policy. Morton has published across several important fields, including international law, security studies, international organization and international relations theory. In addition to the publication of three books and numerous journal articles, Morton has organized two major conferences hosted by FAU. He is also founder and director of the FAU Diplomacy Program. Students involved in this program have won five consecutive awards at the National Model United Nations Simulation in New York City. In October 2012 Professor Morton was awarded the prestigious Foreign Policy Association Medal at the World Leadership Forum Dinner in New York City. Past recipients of this award include President Bill Clinton, Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Madeleine Albright, and Secretary of Defense William Cohen.
