Former U.S. ambassador and FAU alumnus Skipp Orr presented the thirteenth annual John O’<strong>Sullivan</strong><br />
Memorial Lecture. Orr graduated from FAU in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He subsequently<br />
earned a master’s degree in government from Georgetown University, and a doctorate in political science/<br />
international relations from the University of Tokyo.<br />
Ambassador Orr served as United States Executive Director with the rank of Ambassador to the Asian<br />
Development Bank (ADB) from 2010-2016. From 2007-2010 he was the Chairman of the Board of the<br />
Panasonic Foundation, and from 2002-2007, President of Boeing Japan. Previously, he held several seniorlevel<br />
positions with Motorola in both Brussels and Japan, culminating as Vice-President of Government<br />
Relations. Active for many years in academia and the U.S. government, between 1985 and 1993 he was a<br />
professor of political science at Temple University in Japan, with two years off to run the Kyoto Center for<br />
Japanese Studies and the Stanford Center for Technology and Innovation at the Stanford Japan Center in<br />
Kyoto.<br />
Orr’s book, “The Emergence of Japan’s Foreign Aid Power,” won the 1991 Ohira Prize for best book on the<br />
Asia Pacific.<br />
