PERSONAL (R)EVOLUTION
book! To get yourself out of the inaction or stagnation, you’ll
have to give yourself a few easy wins—a few inch pebbles that
you can claim as your achievements. Once you’ve gathered
a few pebbles and gained some confidence, you can attack
some rocks, and then the stones will start flowing. You’ll find
yourself engaged in a productivity avalanche in no time.
Let’s say you want to find a partner and get married.
You’ve got to start with going on a date. And then another.
After a while, you’ll find out what you do and don’t like in a
person, and you’ll hone in on what you’re looking for. Even
if the girl who lived next door when you were twelve seemed
just perfect for you, you probably won’t figure that out until
you do a little bit more dating off the reservation.
If you want to lose forty pounds, you have to start by
losing five, six, then seven. When people try to do something
very ambitious right off the bat and skip steps, moving from
A to D instead of A to B, they often get frustrated and throw
up their hands (think of all the people who cheat on a toostrict
diet).
Like the slow-and-steady tortoise that wins the race
against that cocky hare, know that by knocking off the inch
pebbles you will soon reach your milestone.
REFLECTION STOP POINT
× × Is there an Action item or a milestone you’ve set up
that just isn’t getting done?
ACTION STOP POINT
× × If you’ve answered the above in the affirmative, identify
several “first next steps” for breaking down that Action
item into smaller inch pebbles.
