Hello & welcome back
Looking forward across the next few
months, we have a lot going on in the
Village, with the Dog Show and numerous
events at the Pavilion, organised by the
HCA . If you wondered what this
charity does—please do read the article
on page 6
In this magazine, we also have some new
articles from local experts. Pet care -
Want to know where there is a dog friendly
beach? On wildlife, Keith Metcalf, MCV
Conservation Officer, reports on some of
our well hidden treasures. We have a really
interesting wine article highlighting some
new discoveries . Also Chris and Jayne from
Sylvan Apiaries provide a fascinating insight
on their world amongst bees.
The fabulous cover page is thanks to
Graham Bell—please see page 15 for
more detail on his work.
Lastly, but very importantly, I want to say
a very big thank you to everyone who
helped distribute the last edition and this
one. Hordle is not the easiest to navigate,
and it is quite a feat reaching all houses
in the area.
PETCARE
SUN, SEA…...and REX
With the grey clouds at last starting to give
way to bouts of brilliant sunshine, now's
the time to rejuvenate your senses and
exercise your dog at the same time by
heading for our sparkling coastline. But
where can you and Rex, your
poo-producing, sandwich-stealing pooch
actually go without upsetting everyone
else around you? Read on, Sophie's Pet
Care have got it all sorted...
free bits of hot sausage. Now it's changed
hands, and become a no-dog zone inside.
However, there's a wide selection of
public seating with rejuvenating sea views
outside, and you can grab a snack and a
drink from the beachfront shop. There are
also public conveniences available.
Gundimore Beach at Mudeford is ideal.
Unlike it's neighbour Avon Beach — where
from May they'll fine you and your fourlegged
friend for setting foot on it —
little-known Gundimore, right next door
remains "dog friendly" all the year round.
You can leave your vehicle in the sunken
car park just behind the beach, or admire
the view from the public car park adjacent
to the Noisy Lobster Cafe. It's situated
right on the seafront overlooking the Isle
of Wight.
Gundimore Beach begins just to the right
of this car park and continues in a westerly
direction up toward Mudeford Quay.
There's usually a few dogs on the beach
cavorting around and plunging manfully
into the freezing waves. No one bothers
them or you as long as you pick up your
poo (well, not your poo exactly.... umm,
you know what we mean).
The Noisy Lobster Cafe used to be
dog-friendly, didn't mind sandy floors and
wet dogs and would often dish them out
We can supply a walk route sheet if you
fancy a wander around Gundimore in case
you're stuck for inspiration.
If you'd like a printable PDF of this walk
route that you can take with you, simply
email walkies@sophiespetcare.com and
we'll send you one completely free of
charge, and tell you about the services we
can offer to you and your dog.
See you next month from some more
canine capers and hot news from the
dogosphere!
Saturday 16th June
Hordle Community Association is presenting a
fun filled evening of handling and identifying
interesting old items used within the home,
garden or beyond. The objects will be familiar
to a few of us (the more senior team members,
perhaps), but of interest to all.
We are hoping to have at least 8 teams of 6
members, with the team gaining the highest
total of correct answers receiving a `MAJOR
PRIZE`.
You are cordially invited to enter a team or
teams by calling the following phone number:
01425 517944 or members@hordleca.co.uk
We may be able to amalgamate smaller teams,
so please call if you are interested in that
option.
After the mid-evening interval we will be
presenting an auction of useful but unwanted
items/collectables donated on the night. Please
bring along anything suitable and we will sell
your donation to benefit you 50/50 with HCA
funds. Entry cost will be £2.50 per person, and
all proceeds will go to the HCA.
During the interval refreshments will be served
by willing helpers and there will be a chance to
win a ‘grand’ raffle prize.
FEATURE
We at Sylvan Apiaries, run 170 honey
production colonies across three counties,
Hants, Wilts and Dorset. April was a very busy
time for us on the bee farm, checking how
many colonies made it through the winter. We
always have very low numbers of losses, mainly
because we insure our colonies have enough
stores of honey and pollen to get them through
a long winter, such as the one we have had this
year. In the Autumn we only ever take the
surplus honey to sell.
The Oil seed rape is now in full flower and the
colonies are in overdrive. The queens are laying
at almost full speed. The newly hatched worker
bees are on house cleaning duties, and the
older bees are hard at work foraging, bringing
back loads of pollen to feed the brood and
nectar to feed the adult bees. Some bees will be
collecting water. Most people don`t realise
water is very important for the survival of bee
colonies & we have water feeders at all our
sites for this reason.
Bee colonies are very well structured, with
specific jobs to do within the colony . These are
determined by their age- for example, cleaning
and feeding brood, foraging and guard
duty. Each of these jobs will be undertaken in
turn by the adult bees during their brief life,
which could be as little as six weeks.
We run mostly static sites for our bees, this
means we don`t have to keep moving colonies
about after specific crops to pollenate. Much
better for the bees and for our backs!
Our main job at this time of year is to undertake
weekly inspection , looking for sign of swarming
and keep ahead of the bees. We add honey
boxes to insure they have sufficient room for
expanding brood nests and storage space for
the incoming nectar. If we don’t do this, the
BEHIND HIVE DOORS
THE LIFE OF A LOCAL BEE KEEPER
bees will run out of space and swarm, taking the
Queen, half of the bees and honey with them.
This is something we try our best to avoid. Once
the nectar is collected and stored in the wax
combs, the bees have to evaporate it to reduce
the water content before they seal it in with a
wax coat for use at a later date. It can now be
called honey.
Once the rape honey is 3/4 capped, (covered
over with wax by the bees), it is ready to
extract. We have to be quick as rape honey
crystallises very quickly. Leave it for too long
and it will have to be melted out of the comb,
resulting in the loss of the wax comb, which is
one of our most valuable assets. We collect the
full combs from the hives and take them to our
extraction room , where we uncap the honey
frames with a revolving brush or a hot knife.
The uncapped frames are placed into one of our
two centrifuge spinners where the honey is
spun out. It is then drained through a course
sieve to take out any lumps of wax or any
impurities. It is then stored in 15kg buckets.
Nothing is added, it is then either sold in bulk to
a honey packer or jarred and sold to local
outlets. The emptied wax combs are returned
to the hives to be cleaned and filled again by
the bees.
Bees and other pollinators are under pressure
from loss of suitable forage in today`s world.
Gardens are smaller than they use to be,
hedgerows have been grubbed out and
replaced by fences. This combined with the use
of pesticide on a large scale is having an adverse
effect on them all.
Without bees, our food supply would be very
much reduced. You can help support the bees
by planting bee friendly plants and buying local
honey, within 25 miles radius of the producer
would be ideal.
Dorothy’s Blog
I was complemented on my last article, so I
thought readers might be interested in the
follow up to living in Hordle .
I feel that now my stint as HCA Secretary
is coming to an end, at 80 I feel I must
hand over the job to a younger person.
So, at the HCA AGM , I shall reluctantly be
resigning the position but will carry on
with the Entertainment Committee. Any
money we make on the fairs and the
entertainment goes to our Hordle
Community Association.
We try to fill the hall with interesting
hirers and a couple of days a week are
allocated to disabled groups in the area.
We had a Spring Fair for the first time this
year and it was a great success, helped by
the weather, it was a glorious Spring day.
This month I have to get sewing my bag
and other things for the New Forest Show,
that our local W.I. are taking part in. I
have a shoe to create a flower display in, a
picture to paint, a bag to sew, also jam to
make. We then have the Gardening Club
and our open show, so I must get things
ready for that. I may grow some runner
beans this year.
I really thought I would have nothing to do
now I am really retired but it does not
seem to have worked out like that!
1 st Hordle Brownies, girls aged 7-10, meet in the Hordle W1 Hall on Thursday evenings
from 6.15-7.45. In a friendly and supportive atmosphere they unwind after school,
make new friends, enjoy games and practice new skills. They also love earning badges
for hobbies and interests practiced at home. The varied programme of activities
encourages them to develop themselves, as well as developing an awareness of ways
in which they can help others in the unit, at home and in the wider community. Recent
events include a trip to Pets at Home and a Tai Chi workshop.
The main emphasis is on fun and adventure, with outings, pack holidays and activity
days to choose from as well.
Have you noticed Red Boxes in our Co-op? These boxes
are donation points for The Red Box Project Lymington &
Brockenhurst.
This community project aims to provide sanitary and
essential products for young ladies in our local schools and
colleges.
Why is this needed?
In the UK some young ladies in our schools and other
education settings are finding it financially difficult to
access sanitary products. This happens more often than
you realise & some girls are even failing to attend school
during this time.
If you would like to find out more about the project, please
The Shady Garden
A recent speaker at the Garden club was Alan Edmondson (See opposite for his Gardening tips
for June & July)
Some Key take outs:
Naturally shaded areas have 3 tiers of planting. Starting with trees, then shrubs below, all
underplanted with perennials as the 3 rd tier.
Shrubs: Rhododendrons love the dappled sun that comes through the trees.
Perennials: Epimediums are best cut to ground level each year, but you must choose your
moment wisely.
Bulbs and corms: Great for adding colour to form the 3 rd tier of planting, in small gardens,
dwarf varieties are best. For Narcissus, the best four for the longest show are February Gold,
which flower in the first week of March, Tete-a-tete then flowers, which is then followed by Jack
Snipe and lastly Hawera, each stem normally has 3 flowers.
returning for another year. The week
celebrates the musical and artistic talents
from around the area. Featuring
performances, workshops and exhibitions
This year’s theme is The Year of The Poppy,
with events to commemorate one-hundred
years since the end of World War One.
“Remembered” is a show being hosted at the
Community Centre containing the music,
drama and comedy of the period. Throughout
the week there are also historical walks and
talks about what the village was like during
wartime Britain. The event is free to attend
with the exemption of certain events, but you
can support the continuation of the festival by
purchasing one of our programmes. These are
available from the following shops in the
village: Hollands, Co-Op, Village News,
Carrington Park, The Village Charity Shop and
the Community Centre Box Office.
There is live
and most of it
is free.
You can
swoon to light classical, slap your thigh to
some country, jive to a Swing Band, get
soulful with some blues, or dance your way
through an afternoon with rock and roll…or
get busy and inspired at our workshops and
competitions. Or you can go Retro and
ramble through the lanes of Everton and
take a trip down Everton’s Memory lane,
enhanced with a Victorian slideshow.
My wife Carole and I moved to Everton
in June 2016 from Sussex when we
purchased the village store and Post
Office.
We really love this area and feel like we
have settled in really quickly, mostly
because of the friendly people around
us. We have improved the shop greatly
in the short time we have been here,
introducing lots of new lines -
including meat from The New Forest
Bacon Company & local strawberries
from the New Forest Fruit Co. We have
just also introduced I.O.W tomatoes
and local asparagus. We have fresh
bread products delivered six days a
week from Jennings of Lymington and
Lymington dressed crab and lobster
from S&J subject to availability. We
stock meat pies from The Real Pie
Company and have a selection of
frozen meals and desserts made locally
by Mangetout Catering. We can take
orders for all of the above.
The Post Office is busy now as so many
have closed in the area, including
Milford on Sea and Hordle and we
welcome all new customers. The Post
Office operates as a Local branch, so
we are not able to process motor
vehicle licences but offer free banking
withdrawals and deposits for most of
the high street banks, plus all other
usual post office services. The Post
Office is open the same hours as the
shop which are 7am to 7.30pm Mon to
Sat and 7.30am to 5pm on Sundays.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
FEATURE
HOMELESSNESS: ON OUR DOORSTEP
It is strange how things come along to make
you think about really important issues when
you least expect them. I was out shopping in
New Milton last week, and outside Morrisons
sat a young lad with his dog, on the pavement.
He smiled and waved at me as I went into the
shop, and something about him just compelled
me to buy a whopping great big meal deal and
other goodies for him plus a large bag of dog
food for his furry pal. I took them over to him
after shopping, and, as I plonked them down
next to him, he jumped up and gave me the
biggest hug. It quite took me aback! I asked
him if he had anywhere to go overnight, or if he
was getting any assistance to find somewhere
to live. He pulled out a piece of paper from his
pocket and said he was going to Bournemouth
on the bus to a homelessness centre, and
indeed it showed an appointment date and
time for later that day. I wished him well, and
when I passed by a little later he had gone. I
hope he got to his appointment on time and
that they could help him.
Then, just yesterday, Sunday, it was the
outgoing District Council Chairman Christine
Ward’s church service at St Thomas’ Church in
Lymington. It was a most beautiful service, with
a comical vicar and a fabulous local ladies choir.
The vicar, as is traditional in council services,
spoke about those in local and national
government serving their communities well and
looking after those who most need our help.
The service was followed by a wonderful spread
of tea, sandwiches and cakes in the church hall,
all enjoyed by us councillors, our MP, and
several chained and hatted mayors and
mayoresses from all over Hampshire. At the
end, there was a huge amount of food left over.
At the request of the Chairman, I filled a plate
with best sarnies, cheese straws, large hunks of
coffee cake, pineapple cake and cream scones,
to take back home for Mr. Carpenter. But as I
turned into the high street, on a bench outside
the church sat an older gentleman with several
large bags tied together next to him, wrapped
up in a big old coat. How could I walk by him
with a huge pile of food on a big paper plate
wrapped in clingfilm? I asked him if he could
make use of it, and he certainly could. (So, no
cake for Mr. Carpenter, but he’d never know
anyway… unless he reads this!) The man also
told me that he would go to Lymington Town
Hall the next day for advice. I really hope he
did.
In November 2017, the New Forest area was
reported as having one of the highest rates of
homelessness in the country. You don’t often
see it, because people are frequently sleeping
in cars or ‘sofa surfing’ with friends. But our
homeless problem is as bad as Gosport and
other larger urban conurbations along the
south coast. New Forest District Council is
currently reviewing its Homelessness Strategy,
to better help people who are already homeless
or in danger of becoming homeless. The
council has a very good Homelessness Team
within the housing department, who signpost
homeless people to sources of help and
temporary accommodation where they can.
They do great work, but there is always more to
do. And I have already let them know about
the two homeless men I met this week.
If you are worried about someone who is
homeless, or who you think may be about to be
made homeless (or if you are in that situation
yourself) please ring the Homelessness Team
on 02380 285234 (Option 3) or outside office
hours 02380 285250.
NOTES FROM THE SOLENT CELLAR
At the Solent Cellar, we love sharing our
new wine discoveries from our travels.
Our latest trip encompassed several
appellations of the Loire Valley, ending our
trip South East of Nantes in the heart of
Muscadet country.
Poiron Dabin Sauvignon Blanc, IGP 2017 -
Initial vine cuttings came from the prestigious
village of Sancerre, this wine
represents amazing value. Delicate but ripe
passionfruit notes on the nose as well as
pear. It has a long citrus finish.
There has been some resurgence going on
in Muscadet over the recent years, and
quality is definitely on the up! The younger
generations are taking over the reins and
introducing new ideas and techniques.
Yields are being lowered and organic
viticulture is becoming more common. The
creation of a new Cru status for exceptional
areas for Muscadet has been exciting for
growers and this has resulted in the
creation of more complex wines. Although
only 2% of Muscadet's production accounts
for 'Cru Communal' it has raised the profile
of the region highlighting the importance of
terroir.
Living on the South Coast , we love pairing
the wines we have to the amazing array of
fresh, local produce. At this time of year
the white wines from the Loire are perfect
with fresh seafood such as Lymington Crab
or Poole bay oysters. The asparagus season
is also upon us, and there is nothing better
than a plate of the beautiful spears freshly
steamed and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc
from the region.
Poiron Dabin Muscadet Sur Lie Veille
Vignes - A wine from 50 year old vines, this
produces a classic 'Sur Lie' Muscadet with
citrus and green apple notes and
minerality. Pair to oysters!
Poiron Dabin Sauvignon 'Fie Gris' 2017 -
From one of their more obscure grape
varieties which has a pinkish hue to the
skin, this is fruity, slightly riper style with a
touch of elderflower and ripe apple. The
perfect match would be Asian food with a
touch of spice, or fish baked with aromatic
herbs.
Poiron Dabin Chateau Thebaud 'Clos des
Tabardieres' Sevre et Maine' 2012 - The
top Cru communal wine where vineyards
are on prime granite sites, this wine spends
55 months on lees (minimum for this cru
wine is 24). It has an amazing depth of
flavour, ripe notes of apple, acacia honey
and a stony minerality. Save this for a
celebratory dish of brill or turbot. This wine
can age for up to 20 years in the cellar!
We visited on our
Heather & Simon
trip, Poiron Dabin a
small producer.
Reiki is a simple, natural, non-intrusive
method of energy healing which allows
positive energy to flow through the hands
of the practitioner, encouraging the body
to balance and heal itself. The word
‘Reiki’ is made up of the Japanese words
– ‘Rei’ meaning ‘universal’ and ‘Ki’
meaning ‘life force energy’.
Reiki treats the whole person - body,
mind and soul, resulting in many
beneficial effects including relaxation,
stress reduction and a feeling of peace,
security and well-being. The client
remains fully clothed whilst the
practitioner uses a series of hand
positions either on or slightly above the
body, according to the client’s
preference. A warm, soothing energy
flows from the hands into the client,
promoting relaxation, releasing tension
and helping to balance the body’s energy
centres (‘chakras’) on a very deep level.
Some people experience the energy as
heat, others as coolness, some as tingling
or a vibration, others see colours and
some feel nothing at all although the
universal energy is always working.
Experiences differ from person to person
and from session to session, but Reiki can
never do any harm - only good.
