ASPECTS OF LYMINGTON

In a regular series Aspects of Lymington, Ray

Mayes provides a miscellany of views of

Lymington – its people, buildings, history and

development, and relationship to the coast and

the New Forest. This month he poses the

question who is protecting Lymington’s salt

heritage?

Protecting Lymington’s

Salt Heritage

There is no lovelier walk in and around

Lymington (apart from the adjacent beauty of

the New Forest) than the marshes and mudflats

of the Lymington-Keyhaven Nature Reserve.

With distant views of the Isle of Wight, the

coastal footpath follows the shallow brackish

lagoons behind the seawall, connected to the

Solent through a system of sluices and tidal

flaps.

Here is the foundation of Lymington’s heritage,

which was so key to the development of the

town

brine solution. Today, Moses Dock is the only

remaining navigable dock.

Salt barns under threat

The last remaining buildings of the area’s salt

heritage are two Moses Dock 'salt barns' – and,

as can be seen, these currently appear in a poor

condition. One severe storm as we have

experienced recently could see the salt barns

collapse like a pack of cards.

4

This idyllic scenery once manifested a major

industry – the production of sea salt which was

active from medieval times until 1865. Today,

the Nature Reserve contains the best-preserved

examples of former salt workings in southern

England. This unique historical and wildlife

heritage is managed by the Hampshire & Isle of

Wight Wildlife Trust.

One aspect of the area’s remaining built

heritage, however, is at threat.

18th century salt industry

When we refer to our town as ‘Georgian’, we

are alluding not only to its fundamental

architectural heritage but the wealth upon

which it was founded. In the 17th Century, the

manufacture of salt was central to the economic

welfare of the town. Many of the saltern owners

were men of status and owned substantial

houses. The Burrard family were heavily

involved in the salt industry, owning many of the

salterns.

The two salt barns, which are adjacent to (but

are part of) Creek Cottage in Lower Woodside

Lymington (SO41 8AJ); they have already been

recognised by the planning authorities as

heritage assets of special architectural or

historic

interest.

Creek

Cottage

itself is nondesignated

but its two

salt barns

are Grade II

listed,

dating from

the 18th

century. The public footpath surrounds the head

of Moses Dock, with a rounded earth bank.

Protecting the salt barns: whose responsibility?

The future of the salt barns would seem to be in

the hands of the owners and the planning

authorities. It is understood that discussions

between the owners and officers from the New

Forest National Park (planning and

conservation) have taken place to ensure that

any work to both Creek Cottage itself and the

While there are many remaining examples of

Georgian architecture in the town, little can be

seen of industrial building along the whole

length of the ‘salterns’ - the shallow lagoons

where the seawater was impounded. No

evidence remains visible of the wind pumps adjoining Ray listed Mayes salt is the barns author should of leaflets not adversely on Historic

...However, it is potentially a lack of proper

protective structural maintenance that is

crucially important. The whole community

have a vested interest in protecting these

heritage assets. This needs action before it is

too late.

The danger is that this last remaining part of

Lymington’s salt heritage, of which we are so

proud, is gradually eroding. It is not clear who

is responsible for protecting these interests –

the owners themselves, the New Forest

National Park Authority, the NFDC, Hampshire

County Council, or even the Lymington &

Pennington Town Council. Surely these are all

interested parties.

The Lymington Society (the town’s civic

society) is aware of the threat to the salt

barns – is this another case for community

action?

Ray Mayes is the author of leaflets on Historic

Lymington (three town trail walks) and the Blue

Plaques Trail (describing the stories behind the

town’s 13 Blue Plaques).

During August & September

August is high Summer when the heat is maintained but day-length becomes noticeably

reduced towards the end of the month.

September is more mellow, day-length shortens rapidly as it progresses.

• Scruffy Lawns will benefit from scarifying. Also, patches can be reseeded with a gently

loosening of the top and addition of good quality seed. If dry pre-moisten and keep moist until

growth is established. If and when you cut the lawn, don’t over cut it and remember to

compost the clippings.

• Summer pruning of fruit trees produces less soft growth than winter pruning. Birds and

squirrels love the ripening fruit of plums and cherries, so protection is beneficial. And

remember, these beasties are awake and feeding while we are in deep nod. The prunings of

raspberries can be shredded (or finely chopped up) and added to the compost.

• Keep harvesting and devouring crops before they become tough, and there are some late veg

can still be sown under glass: Rocket, Endive, Chicory, spring Onion and spring Cabbage.

Japanese Onions can be planted in September.

• Keep Brassicas protected from pigeons, they will strip all the new growth.

• August is a good month to “hedge”, so those shears need to be sharp and oiled.

• Many shrubs will benefit from trimming back new growth, this will let the small shoots harden

before the Winter blasts. Hebes should be pruned back after flowering.

• If dry, camellias need a good soak, they are now developing next year’s blossom.

• If wet, you can start moving plants around the garden.

• Now is the time to collect ripe seed. It is not necessary to collect weed seed - they spread

perfect well without help. That is unless a re-wilded garden is desired.

• At the risk of sounding like a cracked record, keep head-heading.

• Continue watering pots and new plantings, and keep fed.

• We can’t let our Daisies droop, so keep herbaceous plants supported until they have finished

flowering.

• Daffodils and other spring bulbs should be planted in September. Tulips are best planted in

November. Buy fresh and plant fresh.

• Cuttings of tender perennials such as Salvias or Penstemon can be taken in late Summer, they

need to be kept moist and warm.

• Remove the greenhouse shading.

• Any bare ground will love some unctuous compost spread over it.

IN THE GARDEN

• And, most importantly, if it’s hot just sit back and enjoy your garden, and ignore the weeds.

We welcome any questions that you may have, and we'll do our best to help.

We have been keen gardeners for over 30 years, opening our garden over 18 years for the

National Garden Scheme. Since moving to the New Forest area we have been recreating a largish

garden whilst getting used to the new soil conditions.
