Conservation Officer, reports on some of<br />

our well hidden treasures. We have a really<br />

interesting wine article highlighting some<br />

new discoveries . Also Chris and Jayne from<br />

Sylvan Apiaries provide a fascinating insight<br />

on their world amongst bees.<br />

With the grey clouds at last starting to give<br />

way to bouts of brilliant sunshine, now's<br />

the time to rejuvenate your senses and<br />

exercise your dog at the same time by<br />

heading for our sparkling coastline. But<br />

where can you and Rex, your<br />

poo-producing, sandwich-stealing pooch<br />

actually go without upsetting everyone<br />

else around you? Read on, Sophie's Pet<br />

Care have got it all sorted...<br />

free bits of hot sausage. Now it's changed<br />

hands, and become a no-dog zone inside.<br />

However, there's a wide selection of<br />

public seating with rejuvenating sea views<br />

outside, and you can grab a snack and a<br />

drink from the beachfront shop. There are<br />

also public conveniences available.<br />

Gundimore Beach at Mudeford is ideal.<br />

Unlike it's neighbour Avon Beach — where<br />

from May they'll fine you and your fourlegged<br />

friend for setting foot on it —<br />

little-known Gundimore, right next door<br />

remains "dog friendly" all the year round.<br />

You can leave your vehicle in the sunken<br />

car park just behind the beach, or admire<br />

the view from the public car park adjacent<br />

to the Noisy Lobster Cafe. It's situated<br />

right on the seafront overlooking the Isle<br />

of Wight.<br />

Gundimore Beach begins just to the right<br />

of this car park and continues in a westerly<br />

direction up toward Mudeford Quay.<br />

There's usually a few dogs on the beach<br />

cavorting around and plunging manfully<br />

into the freezing waves. No one bothers<br />

them or you as long as you pick up your<br />

poo (well, not your poo exactly.... umm,<br />

you know what we mean).<br />

The Noisy Lobster Cafe used to be<br />

dog-friendly, didn't mind sandy floors and<br />

wet dogs and would often dish them out<br />

you're stuck for inspiration.<br />

The community association is a charity<br />

aimed at providing facilities for local<br />

residents, local clubs and associations.<br />

We currently have many already using<br />

our Pavilion hall in Vaggs Lane, including<br />

dance classes for old and young (from<br />

three years upwards), Tai Chi, a fitness<br />

class, The Flower and Gardening clubs, as<br />

well as special meetings for the disabled.<br />

You are all welcome to come and see our<br />

facilities which include state of the art<br />

video and sound systems, as well as<br />

providing a licenced bar and a well<br />

equipped kitchen. We hire out the hall to<br />

local groups for parties and events, at<br />

competitive prices.<br />

Saturday 16th <strong>June</strong><br />

<strong>Hordle</strong> Community Association is presenting a<br />

fun filled evening of handling and identifying<br />

interesting old items used within the home,<br />

garden or beyond. The objects will be familiar<br />

to a few of us (the more senior team members,<br />

perhaps), but of interest to all.<br />

We are hoping to have at least 8 teams of 6<br />

members, with the team gaining the highest<br />

total of correct answers receiving a `MAJOR<br />

PRIZE`.<br />

Our towns, villages and hamlets are rich in<br />

wildlife habitats and species and makes the<br />

New Forest a unique environment. Just<br />

look out of your window or step into your<br />

garden to see wildlife flourishing.<br />

We work closely with Town & Parish<br />

Councils and the National Park - Land<br />

Advice Service. The Hampshire, New Forest<br />

Area and Milford Conservation Volunteers<br />

(MCV)) undertake a huge amount of work<br />

in our reserves to help keep them<br />

environmentally healthy for wildlife and<br />

the community.<br />

MILFORD-ON-SEA: Sturt Pond – Bird Hide<br />

the Bird Hide yet? If not, follow the<br />

wooden finger posts to the left of the<br />

Needles Eye Café to Raft Rocks at the foot<br />

of Hurst Spit. Notable Species: Little Egret,<br />

Site of Importance for Nature Conservation<br />

We at Sylvan Apiaries, run 170 honey<br />

production colonies across three counties,<br />

Hants, Wilts and Dorset. April was a very busy<br />

time for us on the bee farm, checking how<br />

many colonies made it through the winter. We<br />

always have very low numbers of losses, mainly<br />

because we insure our colonies have enough<br />

stores of honey and pollen to get them through<br />

a long winter, such as the one we have had this<br />

year. In the Autumn we only ever take the<br />

surplus honey to sell.<br />

The Oil seed rape is now in full flower and the<br />

colonies are in overdrive. The queens are laying<br />

at almost full speed. The newly hatched worker<br />

bees are on house cleaning duties, and the<br />

older bees are hard at work foraging, bringing<br />

back loads of pollen to feed the brood and<br />

nectar to feed the adult bees. Some bees will be<br />

collecting water. Most people don`t realise<br />

water is very important for the survival of bee<br />

colonies & we have water feeders at all our<br />

sites for this reason.<br />

Bee colonies are very well structured, with<br />

specific jobs to do within the colony . These are<br />

determined by their age- for example, cleaning<br />

and feeding brood, foraging and guard<br />

duty. Each of these jobs will be undertaken in<br />

turn by the adult bees during their brief life,<br />

which could be as little as six weeks.<br />

We run mostly static sites for our bees, this<br />

means we don`t have to keep moving colonies<br />

about after specific crops to pollenate. Much<br />

better for the bees and for our backs!<br />

Our main job at this time of year is to undertake<br />

weekly inspection , looking for sign of swarming<br />

and keep ahead of the bees. We add honey<br />

boxes to insure they have sufficient room for<br />

expanding brood nests and storage space for<br />

the incoming nectar. If we don’t do this, the<br />

bees will run out of space and swarm, taking the<br />

Queen, half of the bees and honey with them.<br />

This is something we try our best to avoid. Once<br />

the nectar is collected and stored in the wax<br />

combs, the bees have to evaporate it to reduce<br />

the water content before they seal it in with a<br />

wax coat for use at a later date. It can now be<br />

called honey.<br />

Once the rape honey is 3/4 capped, (covered<br />

over with wax by the bees), it is ready to<br />

extract. We have to be quick as rape honey<br />

crystallises very quickly. Leave it for too long<br />

and it will have to be melted out of the comb,<br />

resulting in the loss of the wax comb, which is<br />

one of our most valuable assets. We collect the<br />

full combs from the hives and take them to our<br />

extraction room , where we uncap the honey<br />

frames with a revolving brush or a hot knife.<br />

The uncapped frames are placed into one of our<br />

two centrifuge spinners where the honey is<br />

spun out. It is then drained through a course<br />

sieve to take out any lumps of wax or any<br />

impurities. It is then stored in 15kg buckets.<br />

Nothing is added, it is then either sold in bulk to<br />

a honey packer or jarred and sold to local<br />

outlets. The emptied wax combs are returned<br />

to the hives to be cleaned and filled again by<br />

the bees.<br />

Bees and other pollinators are under pressure<br />

from loss of suitable forage in today`s world.<br />

Gardens are smaller than they use to be,<br />

hedgerows have been grubbed out and<br />

replaced by fences. This combined with the use<br />

of pesticide on a large scale is having an adverse<br />

effect on them all.<br />

Without bees, our food supply would be very<br />

much reduced. You can help support the bees<br />

by planting bee friendly plants and buying local<br />

honey, within 25 miles radius of the producer<br />

would be ideal.<br />

RECIPE<br />

Pan Fried Halibut with red wine<br />

& thyme butter sauce<br />

Head Chef at the Mill at Gordleton, David Whiffen has shared one<br />

of their most popular and seasonable dishes.<br />

METHOD FOR THE FISH AND GARNISH<br />

1. Ensure the halibut is dry.<br />

2. Slice the white & green asparagus on the angle<br />

leaving the heads whole.<br />

3. Place a pan of water and bring to boil, ready to<br />

heat the garnish.<br />

INGREDIENTS<br />

4x120/140g halibut steaks<br />

(skinless)<br />

1 bunch white asparagus (peel &<br />

cook)<br />

1 bunch green asparagus (peel &<br />

cook)<br />

100g samphire (sea asparagus)<br />

120g Jersey Royals (cook and cut<br />

in 1/2)<br />

100g Heritage baby tomato (cut in<br />

½)<br />

¼ bunch red spring onions (thinly<br />

sliced)<br />

100g unsalted butter (cut into<br />

small dice)<br />

10ml Oil<br />

RED WINE & THYME BUTTER<br />

SAUCE<br />

Bottle of red wine,<br />

6 sprigs of thyme<br />

75g shallots<br />

4. Place a non-stick pan on the heat, add the oil &,<br />

then place the fish in the pan bone side down.<br />

Season the top, cook for 2 to 3 minutes then<br />

turn over and cook for another 2 to 3<br />

minutes,. Add a knob of butter and baste.<br />

When cooked place on a tray (keep hot until<br />

needed).<br />

5. Add to the water the potatoes ,followed by the<br />

asparagus then the samphire.<br />

6. Place a sauté pan on the heat, add the butter,<br />

hot potatoes, asparagus, spring onions, and<br />

the tomatoes,. Place on to tray and keep hot<br />

until needed.<br />

METHOD FOR THE SAUCE<br />

1. Place the wine in a pan with the thyme and<br />

shallots and reduce by two thirds.<br />

2. When reduced whisk in the butter slowly, taste,<br />

then add sugar if needed. Strain the sauce in<br />

to a sauce boat.<br />

PLATING UP THE DISH<br />

Place the asparagus and potato garnish in the<br />

middle of the plate and the fish and the sauce<br />

around the plate.<br />

Dorothy’s Blog<br />

I was complemented on my last article, so I<br />

thought readers might be interested in the<br />

follow up to living in <strong>Hordle</strong> .<br />

I feel that now my stint as HCA Secretary<br />

is coming to an end, at 80 I feel I must<br />

hand over the job to a younger person.<br />

So, at the HCA AGM , I shall reluctantly be<br />

resigning the position but will carry on<br />

with the Entertainment Committee. Any<br />

money we make on the fairs and the<br />

entertainment goes to our <strong>Hordle</strong><br />

Community Association.<br />

We try to fill the hall with interesting<br />

hirers and a couple of days a week are<br />

allocated to disabled groups in the area.<br />

We had a Spring Fair for the first time this<br />

year and it was a great success, helped by<br />

the weather, it was a glorious Spring day.<br />

This month I have to get sewing my bag<br />

and other things for the New Forest Show,<br />

that our local W.I. are taking part in. I<br />

have a shoe to create a flower display in, a<br />

picture to paint, a bag to sew, also jam to<br />

make. We then have the Gardening Club<br />

and our open show, so I must get things<br />

ready for that. I may grow some runner<br />

beans this year.<br />

I really thought I would have nothing to do<br />

now I am really retired but it does not<br />

seem to have worked out like that!<br />

will pick you up from home, take you to your<br />

appointment and return you to your home afterwards.<br />

The volunteer will stay with you whilst waiting for your<br />

consultation. We also provide transport for relatives to<br />

visit in-patients if they are unable to get to the hospital<br />

using public transport and to the ‘bathing service’ at the<br />

St John Ambulance HQ on the Gordleton Industrial<br />

Estate or Milford Hospital<br />

Would you like to become a volunteer? If you can spare<br />

a couple of hours a week , we would be pleased to hear<br />

from you.<br />

HORDLE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE meet the first<br />

Tuesday of every month usually in the WI Hall at<br />

2.15pm.<br />

1st HORDLE BROWNIES<br />

1 st <strong>Hordle</strong> Brownies, girls aged 7-10, meet in the <strong>Hordle</strong> W1 Hall on Thursday evenings<br />

from 6.15-7.45. In a friendly and supportive atmosphere they unwind after school,<br />

make new friends, enjoy games and practice new skills. They also love earning badges<br />

for hobbies and interests practiced at home. The varied programme of activities<br />

encourages them to develop themselves, as well as developing an awareness of ways<br />

in which they can help others in the unit, at home and in the wider community. Recent<br />

events include a trip to Pets at Home and a Tai Chi workshop.<br />

The main emphasis is on fun and adventure, with outings, pack holidays and activity<br />

days to choose from as well.<br />

The Shady Garden<br />

A recent speaker at the Garden club was Alan Edmondson (See opposite for his Gardening tips<br />

for <strong>June</strong> & <strong>July</strong>)<br />

Some Key take outs:<br />

Naturally shaded areas have 3 tiers of planting. Starting with trees, then shrubs below, all<br />

underplanted with perennials as the 3 rd tier.<br />

Shrubs: Rhododendrons love the dappled sun that comes through the trees.<br />

Perennials: Epimediums are best cut to ground level each year, but you must choose your<br />

moment wisely.<br />

Bulbs and corms: Great for adding colour to form the 3 rd tier of planting, in small gardens,<br />

dwarf varieties are best. For Narcissus, the best four for the longest show are February Gold,<br />

which flower in the first week of March, Tete-a-tete then flowers, which is then followed by Jack<br />

Snipe and lastly Hawera, each stem normally has 3 flowers.<br />

LOCAL NEWS & EVENTS<br />

Milford on Sea Music and Arts Festival is<br />

returning for another year. The week<br />

celebrates the musical and artistic talents<br />

from around the area. Featuring<br />

performances, workshops and exhibitions<br />

This year’s theme is The Year of The Poppy,<br />

with events to commemorate one-hundred<br />

years since the end of World War One.<br />

“Remembered” is a show being hosted at the<br />

Community Centre containing the music,<br />

drama and comedy of the period. Throughout<br />

the week there are also historical walks and<br />

talks about what the village was like during<br />

wartime Britain. The event is free to attend<br />

with the exemption of certain events, but you<br />

can support the continuation of the festival by<br />

purchasing one of our programmes. These are<br />

available from the following shops in the<br />

village: Hollands, Co-Op, <strong>Village</strong> News,<br />

Carrington Park, The <strong>Village</strong> Charity Shop and<br />

the Community Centre Box Office.<br />

My wife Carole and I moved to Everton<br />

in <strong>June</strong> 2016 from Sussex when we<br />

purchased the village store and Post<br />

Office.<br />

We really love this area and feel like we<br />

have settled in really quickly, mostly<br />

because of the friendly people around<br />

us. We have improved the shop greatly<br />

in the short time we have been here,<br />

introducing lots of new lines -<br />

including meat from The New Forest<br />

Bacon Company & local strawberries<br />

from the New Forest Fruit Co. We have<br />

just also introduced I.O.W tomatoes<br />

and local asparagus. We have fresh<br />

bread products delivered six days a<br />

week from Jennings of Lymington and<br />

Lymington dressed crab and lobster<br />

from S&J subject to availability. We<br />

stock meat pies from The Real Pie<br />

Company and have a selection of<br />

frozen meals and desserts made locally<br />

by Mangetout Catering. We can take<br />

orders for all of the above.<br />

The Post Office is busy now as so many<br />

have closed in the area, including<br />

Milford on Sea and <strong>Hordle</strong> and we<br />

welcome all new customers. The Post<br />

Office operates as a Local branch, so<br />

we are not able to process motor<br />

vehicle licences but offer free banking<br />

withdrawals and deposits for most of<br />

the high street banks, plus all other<br />

usual post office services. The Post<br />

Office is open the same hours as the<br />

shop which are 7am to 7.30pm Mon to<br />

Sat and 7.30am to 5pm on Sundays.<br />

FEATURE<br />

HOMELESSNESS: ON OUR DOORSTEP<br />

It is strange how things come along to make<br />

you think about really important issues when<br />

you least expect them. I was out shopping in<br />

New Milton last week, and outside Morrisons<br />

sat a young lad with his dog, on the pavement.<br />

He smiled and waved at me as I went into the<br />

shop, and something about him just compelled<br />

me to buy a whopping great big meal deal and<br />

other goodies for him plus a large bag of dog<br />

food for his furry pal. I took them over to him<br />

after shopping, and, as I plonked them down<br />

next to him, he jumped up and gave me the<br />

biggest hug. It quite took me aback! I asked<br />

him if he had anywhere to go overnight, or if he<br />

was getting any assistance to find somewhere<br />

to live. He pulled out a piece of paper from his<br />

pocket and said he was going to Bournemouth<br />

on the bus to a homelessness centre, and<br />

indeed it showed an appointment date and<br />

time for later that day. I wished him well, and<br />

when I passed by a little later he had gone. I<br />

hope he got to his appointment on time and<br />

that they could help him.<br />

Then, just yesterday, Sunday, it was the<br />

outgoing District Council Chairman Christine<br />

Ward’s church service at St Thomas’ Church in<br />

Lymington. It was a most beautiful service, with<br />

a comical vicar and a fabulous local ladies choir.<br />

The vicar, as is traditional in council services,<br />

spoke about those in local and national<br />

government serving their communities well and<br />

looking after those who most need our help.<br />

The service was followed by a wonderful spread<br />

of tea, sandwiches and cakes in the church hall,<br />

all enjoyed by us councillors, our MP, and<br />

several chained and hatted mayors and<br />

mayoresses from all over Hampshire. At the<br />

end, there was a huge amount of food left over.<br />

At the request of the Chairman, I filled a plate<br />

with best sarnies, cheese straws, large hunks of<br />

coffee cake, pineapple cake and cream scones,<br />

to take back home for Mr. Carpenter. But as I<br />

turned into the high street, on a bench outside<br />

the church sat an older gentleman with several<br />

large bags tied together next to him, wrapped<br />

up in a big old coat. How could I walk by him<br />

with a huge pile of food on a big paper plate<br />

wrapped in clingfilm? I asked him if he could<br />

make use of it, and he certainly could. (So, no<br />

cake for Mr. Carpenter, but he’d never know<br />

anyway… unless he reads this!) The man also<br />

told me that he would go to Lymington Town<br />

Hall the next day for advice. I really hope he<br />

did.<br />

In November 2017, the New Forest area was<br />

reported as having one of the highest rates of<br />

homelessness in the country. You don’t often<br />

see it, because people are frequently sleeping<br />

in cars or ‘sofa surfing’ with friends. But our<br />

homeless problem is as bad as Gosport and<br />

other larger urban conurbations along the<br />

south coast. New Forest District Council is<br />

currently reviewing its Homelessness Strategy,<br />

to better help people who are already homeless<br />

or in danger of becoming homeless. The<br />

council has a very good Homelessness Team<br />

within the housing department, who signpost<br />

homeless people to sources of help and<br />

temporary accommodation where they can.<br />

They do great work, but there is always more to<br />

do. And I have already let them know about<br />

the two homeless men I met this week.<br />

made homeless (or if you are in that situation<br />

yourself) please ring the Homelessness Team<br />

NOTES FROM THE SOLENT CELLAR<br />

At the Solent Cellar, we love sharing our<br />

new wine discoveries from our travels.<br />

Our latest trip encompassed several<br />

appellations of the Loire Valley, ending our<br />

trip South East of Nantes in the heart of<br />

Muscadet country.<br />

Poiron Dabin Sauvignon Blanc, IGP 2017 -<br />

Initial vine cuttings came from the prestigious<br />

village of Sancerre, this wine<br />

represents amazing value. Delicate but ripe<br />

passionfruit notes on the nose as well as<br />

pear. It has a long citrus finish.<br />

There has been some resurgence going on<br />

in Muscadet over the recent years, and<br />

quality is definitely on the up! The younger<br />

generations are taking over the reins and<br />

introducing new ideas and techniques.<br />

Yields are being lowered and organic<br />

viticulture is becoming more common. The<br />

creation of a new Cru status for exceptional<br />

areas for Muscadet has been exciting for<br />

growers and this has resulted in the<br />

creation of more complex wines. Although<br />

only 2% of Muscadet's production accounts<br />

for 'Cru Communal' it has raised the profile<br />

of the region highlighting the importance of<br />

terroir.<br />

Living on the South Coast , we love pairing<br />

the wines we have to the amazing array of<br />

fresh, local produce. At this time of year<br />

the white wines from the Loire are perfect<br />

with fresh seafood such as Lymington Crab<br />

or Poole bay oysters. The asparagus season<br />

is also upon us, and there is nothing better<br />

than a plate of the beautiful spears freshly<br />

steamed and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc<br />

from the region.<br />

Poiron Dabin Muscadet Sur Lie Veille<br />

Vignes - A wine from 50 year old vines, this<br />

produces a classic 'Sur Lie' Muscadet with<br />

citrus and green apple notes and<br />

minerality. Pair to oysters!<br />

Poiron Dabin Sauvignon 'Fie Gris' 2017 -<br />

From one of their more obscure grape<br />

varieties which has a pinkish hue to the<br />

skin, this is fruity, slightly riper style with a<br />

touch of elderflower and ripe apple. The<br />

perfect match would be Asian food with a<br />

touch of spice, or fish baked with aromatic<br />

herbs.<br />

Poiron Dabin Chateau Thebaud 'Clos des<br />

Tabardieres' Sevre et Maine' 2012 - The<br />

top Cru communal wine where vineyards<br />

are on prime granite sites, this wine spends<br />

55 months on lees (minimum for this cru<br />

wine is 24). It has an amazing depth of<br />

flavour, ripe notes of apple, acacia honey<br />

and a stony minerality. Save this for a<br />

celebratory dish of brill or turbot. This wine<br />

can age for up to 20 years in the cellar!<br />

We are concentrating on providing friendly, 1st class<br />

service alongside freshly made on the premises,<br />

locally sourced dishes, with a slight twist on pub<br />

classics, ensuring the menu is appealing to discerning<br />

diners.<br />

Serving food ALL DAY– EVERY DAY, alongside the<br />

menu will be fresh daily specials also locally sourced.<br />

We are catering for the larger and smaller appetite<br />

and have a totally fresh menu for junior diners. With<br />

mouth-watering desserts, there is also the option of<br />

your own personalised cheese board from our<br />

premium cheese trolley.<br />

Our other pubs are already famous in The New Forest<br />

for their outstanding roast dinners and The Royal Oak<br />

will be the same. We have some lovely large tables<br />

for families and friends and some cosy tables for two!<br />
