Arts collective Trapped in Zone One, the brainchild
of Bablu Miah, brings together a variety of artists,
showcasing their talent and enriching the cultural
landscape along the way...
Trapped in Zone One founder
Bablu Miah, along with creative
director Natalia Suvorova
and an ever increasing team
of artists, has realised several
ambitious projects, including a
series of large-scale graphics
installed across a blank exterior
wall at Westfield Stratford
City, featuring the work of
Bournemouth based artist, ALSO.
The philosophy behind the
name of this collective is to look
beyond your inner comfort zone
to fulfil your potential, and by
building strong partnerships
and supporting artists, whether
emerging or established, the
initiative creates and offers a
myriad of opportunities for artists
to stretch themselves and grow
their art practice.
6 LOVEEAST
Many of their projects are
community-focused, including
work with Tower Hamlets
Cemetery Park and creating and
selling a series of limited edition
t-shirts with Planet Rock Graphics
for Hackney Winter Nights
Shelter, which raised £500 for
the shelter. And, as the official
ambassador for GreatArt, the
collective regularly collaborates
by hosting events engaging
with communities through art
workshops and exhibitions. The
team have also worked with
Tower Hamlets Council and
Lower Regents Coalition in
creating a new public mural at
the newly built kingfisher nesting
East life
bank beside the Regent’s Canal and with Amnesty
UK's Against Hate awareness campaign, where they
engaged the community by staging a series of live
painting events.
Running such large scale and diverse projects is
not for the feint-hearted. It begins with an idea,
of course, and as is said, 'the devil is in the detail',
including choosing and supporting the artists,
planning and logistics, controlling the budget and
generating media attention. Bablu and his team
seem to do this effortlessly, and always with a smile
and a positive attitude.
Trapped in Zone One is currently hosting the
exhibition, Just Type, at Hanbury Hall in Shoreditch,
which is on through the 9 th of June (it's a cracking
great show so go see it if you haven't already). The
typography-based exhibition features new letterbased
works ranging from graffiti hand-style to
type illustration from some of the world’s brightest
talents, including Boogie, Mr Cenz, Aches, Millsnic,
Tarwane and Mr Christa. They have also launched a
new range of limited edition, type-themed t-shirts
in collaboration with Hackney-based Everpress and
five of the artists from the show.
Bablu is passionate about the arts and a fervent
believer in the power of art to create opportunities
for young people so it was no surprise to find
him supporting the recent #Artskickers launch,
collecting a plethora of comments from the
audience in response to a lovely hand-lettered sign
asking 'How did we make you feel today?' That
community-minded spirit, along with a team who
are just as passionate and committed as Bablu is
inspiring; we can't wait to see what Trapped in Zone
One does next!
Tinks Reding Moore's
Holiday Queen Beach
Bags are perfect for
summer outings
Holiday Queen originally started
out as a personal travel blog about
seven years ago. I love traveling
but having been freelance for
years, work always got in the way.
I realised that the only way to get
out there again was to bite the
bullet and just go, so the
holidays began again and
as frequently as I could
manage them.
A photographer friend kept seeing my
photos on Facebook and said ‘why don’t
you write a blog?’ I like a challenge so I set
up Holiday Queen, travels with my flip flops.
The Holiday Queen name came from a colleague who
said I was always on holiday. The blog has been going
well and to date has had over 40,000 views.
The beach bags came about by a simple need to
find a bag that would suit my needs. About a year
ago I decided to have a look online and buy myself
a new one as I had a beach holiday coming up. I’ve
had all sorts before; canvas, leather, baskets, etc.
and they were all lovely but if you’re on a beach that
has wet sand, or by a pool, the bags can quickly get
wet (including the contents) and baskets tended to
damage fabric if it rubbed against it. Somehow the
idea of neoprene stuck in my head and, try as I might,
I could not find anything I liked. They were either
cheap and shabbily made or prohibitively expensive
and over the top.
A light bulb went on and I decided
I could make one myself. I texted a
friend and told her, ‘I’m going to
make beach bags in neoprene’. I had
no idea how I was going to do it, or
even where to get neoprene. She told
me there was a local supplier - what
a coincidence - so I bought a metre of
fabric and took it back to her house to put
one together. We spent the afternoon testing
stitches, working out how the fabric would look
and then I took the plunge, cut one out and put it
together. I was so happy with the result that the next
day I went back to the fabric supplier and bought
more fabric.
East London Entrepreneur
I then invested in
my own machine
and threw a few
bags together.
A quick trip to
Camber Sands
for a photo
shoot and I put
the images onto
Instagram and on my Facebook page, Holiday Queen.
A local boutique, Sublime, bought some and I sold
the rest of the stock I had. I also made some bags
to order in the colour combinations chosen by the
buyers, both men and women.
Neoprene is the perfect fabric for the beach.
Wetsuits are made from it as are a multitude of other
products. It's lightweight, sand-resistant, keeps all
your belongings dry and the colours are bright and
summery. The straps are very soft and comfortable
on your shoulder, even on bare skin. Each bag comes
with a pouch for your suntan lotions, or your iPad,
kindle etc. The bag holds everything you need for the
pool or beach - towel, water bottle, lotions, kindle/
book, iPad and camera. You can also purchase an
extra pouch, which can be quite useful. Personally, I
like a small pouch for lotions etc. and a slightly larger
one for wallet, iPad and keys. I leave the bag on the
lounger by the pool and take the pouch with my
valuables to lunch. It works a treat. This year I have
added another item - a swim bag - that can be used
for your wet swimsuit and beach shoes. I also make a
slightly deeper bag.
WHERE CAN I GET ONE?
HQ Bags are available at Sublime, 225 Victoria Park
Road, E9 7HD and 128 St Johns Street, Clerkenwell, EC1V
4JS; also online via the Facebook page.
HOW MUCH ARE THEY?
Guests of honour Amanda Holden, and former England footballer
Jermaine Jenas celebrate Springfield Youth Club’s 56th year at their
Annual Presentation Night
The presentation evening, held this past March at Clapton’s Anthony Marsh Building, was
an opportunity to recognise young members and adult volunteers alike, as well as those
organisations and individuals that have supported the club over the past twelve months.
14 LOVEEAST
Hackney’s very own Springfield Soul opened
the ceremony with a fantastic performance of
music and dance and the evening progressed
with the introductions of Paul Stewart, Executive
Chairman; Michael Keogh, Deputy Chairman;
Said Hersi, Director; and Steve Herbert,
Club Manager. A video, created by the club,
highlighted the past year of trips, performances
and competitions, and members and volunteers
alike were presented with awards to honour their
efforts.
As a singer, actress, and judge on Britain’s Got
Talent, Amanda has a real appreciation for what
Springfield does. “I was desperate to be an
actress and had no kind of way of doing it back
then. Amazingly, this woman started a theatre
club and everybody went down there. For me
that is where this all started.”
No stranger to understanding the value of youth
clubs and organized activities himself, Jermaine
commented: “I have to say, having walked into
the building for the first
time you can’t help but just
be massively impressed.
These are people who
sacrifice their own time and are spending time away from their families
to make sure that the youth can grow and shine. Everyone here today
should really appreciate that.”
Established in 1961 and located in Upper Clapton, Springfield Youth Club
began as a boy’s club, expanding their membership to girls in 1999.
Since that time, the club has run a variety of programmes for Hackney
youth including Football, Dance, Roller Skating, Drama, Art & Crafts,
Basketball, Fencing, Singing and Technology based activities. Through
these activities, members develop social, team building, leadership and
communication skills, which are vital in today’s society.
With a current, thriving membership of over three hundred young
people ranging in age from 8 – 17, the club is a safe haven for them to
meet, discover and develop their interests, forge relationships and, of
course, have fun in the process. Founder Anthony Marsh’s aim was
to “help each child or young person find interests, and to help each
individual to develop, as far as they can, towards being a useful citizen
of tomorrow”. That ethos carries on today as the club continues to
provide support and improve the quality of the educational and social
activities on offer.
Bell from Bow
Celine Bell explores Summer in the City
We parents have spent months cladding our
offspring in macs, hats, woolly scarves and
waterproof onesies. Walks in the park have
become a puddle-jumping obstacle course, and
I’ve comforted frozen tiny toddlers with sodden
socks and blue fingers. Anyone who says there
is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong
clothes, hasn’t realised just how wet a young child
can get, even through layers of waterproofing.
And then, all of a sudden, the sun came out. We
scrabbled to squeeze our children into shorts
they’d outgrown at the end of last summer, and we
dug out the - no doubt - out-of-date sun cream
that was last used on a balmy September day. The
bells of the ice cream vans drew us back to the
park, and we kicked balls around on the hottest
bank holiday in years.
Then it got cooler again. It’s hard to keep on top of
the weather when it changes so fast. And it’s such
a pleasure to be outside that it’s worth the odd
goose-pimpled day when the spring sunshine isn’t
quite as warm as it looks.
It’s got me thinking of summer in the city. Those
blissful three weeks in August when so many
frazzled families join the queues at Stanstead and
enjoy a well-deserved escape from the school
run, the Central line and the damp squib that is so
often our Great British Summer. But that’s not for
me. That’s the time I like to rule London, enjoying
the empty roads, the tables in restaurants I usually
queue for, the fact that my kids can be the first in
the water area in Vicky Park.
And this summer I want to rediscover the parts
of East London that get forgotten in the summer
months. I’ll go back to the damp, shady woodland
in the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. I love
when it's decorated with yellow daffodil heads,
but haven’t ventured in without my wellies. What
secrets does it harbour in the summer months for
little ones to discover and enjoy?
I last saw Hackney Marshes on a rain-lashed day
where I had to take the kids out or they’d climb the
walls – how wonderful to return with a picnic, a
football (and sneakily, a bottle of cold white wine).
All too often I use the excuse of the sunshine to
take the easy option of an ice cream in the park.
But this year, when school’s out, I’m finding the
lidos, the parks, the sunspots and the pub gardens
and all the other delights that our brilliant East
London boroughs have been harbouring patiently
throughout the winter months.
Find @LoveEastMag on Twitter and let us know
your secret summer haunts.
LOVEEAST JUNE - JULY 2018 15
East life
Residents of Tower
Hamlets saw lots
of action with the
filming of Mission:
Impossible - Fallout
right on their doorstep
Tower Hamlets, now one
of the most popular film
locations in London, recently
welcomed film crews for
Mission: Impossible 6 - Fallout.
With Tom Cruise at the helm
and Christopher McQuarrie
directing his second Mission:
Impossible film, several iconic
characters reprise their roles,
along with some new faces.
The result is a stellar cast,
including Rebecca Ferguson,
Vanessa Kirby, Henry Cavill,
Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin,
Michelle Monaghan and Ving
Rhames to name a few.
The Tower Hamlets Film Office
connection
The Film Office is an
organisation exclusively
contracted to provide film
liaison and management
services for local authorities,
registered social landlords,
16 LOVEEAST
property developers and
private location owners.
They manage filming and
photographic shoots for the
London Boroughs of Newham
& Tower Hamlets (the most
film friendly boroughs in the
Capital) along with many
private locations.
In the case of Mission:
Impossible – Fallout, the
filming in Tower Hamlets was
months in the making, and
to say it was 'an involved
shoot' is an understatement,
Among the usual challenges
of such a large-scale project,
Tom Cruise breaking his ankle
while performing a stunt in
the capital resulted in several
schedule changes. Despite
that, filming was successfully
completed to the satisfaction
of everyone concerned.
The Tower Hamlets Film
Office's proactive approach,
in-depth knowledge of the
borough and close working
relationships with local
residents and businesses
ensured that the interests
of all stakeholders were
factored in along the way.
Additionally, strong and
positive relationships
developed with the film
location and production crews
meant that the Tower Hamlets
community itself gained
tangible benefits from playing
host.
Dominic Reeve-Tucker,
Director at The Film Office,
says "Hollywood studios
are increasingly choosing to
shoot big-budget films in the
UK, attracted by significant
government tax breaks, as
well as access to top-class
on- and off-screen talent and
studio facilities.”
Tower Hamlets itself is the
second most filmed borough
in the capital (Westminster is
the first) and has maintained
that status since 2014. This
is in no small part due to the
The Film Office’s service
management, which provides
maximum benefit at minimal
inconvenience at all times.
East life
Location Manager, David
Campbell-Bell says: "The
Film Office has offered
tremendous support
facilitating and welcoming
Mission: Impossible 6 to
Tower Hamlets. Their team
has met every challenge
with enthusiasm and
professionalism that has
enabled practical solutions
to ensure a successful shoot
for all parties. It's been a
highly ambitious shoot with a
relentless schedule involving
multiple locations/scenes,
including the opening night
sequence of the film.”
Newham & Tower
Hamlets are the most
film friendly boroughs
in the Capital
Both The Film Office and
Locations Team have worked
incredibly hard alongside each
other to balance the interests
of the production and local
residents & businesses -
together we have been able
to provide additional benefits
including employment,
on-set work experience, set
visits and donations to local
associations to support their
community work.
Creating opportunities
The production facilitated
work experience from 4
Corners - a local learning,
production and exhibition
centre for film and
photography, which supports
new talent to establish
practitioners. Local resident
Mark Jones got in touch with
the production after receiving
a letter though his door as
part of their consultation for
filming in Shoreditch:
"I live in Shoreditch and have
a genuine interest in the film
industry, recently completing
a degree in Film Practise
at the London College of
Communication - part of UAL.
After approaching the
production, I was invited
down for a set visit and two
weeks later I was working
on that film set as a Location
Marshall in the Location
Department Team - it provided
a fantastic foundation and
understanding of what a
location department manages
in film production.”
The Location Department
then hired Mark as a
Location Marshall for the
duration of the shoot,
resulting in employment for
approximately. three months.
Local Associations also
welcomed the filming and
its benefits to the area. Film
Liaison Officer, Jeannie Taylor-
Lowen of Norton Folgate
says "It can be exiting to
have film crews turning your
neighbourhood into a film set
- it can also be challenging.
Being able to easily liaise with
The Film Office has proven
extremely useful.
The whole
neighbourhood was
buzzing with the news
that Tom Cruise was
'in the hood'
Our neighbourhood residents
group - the Norton Folgate
Community Group are
committed to improving
the day-to-day lives of our
members in a direct and
tangible way, including raising
funds to secure off street
bicycle racks, enabling the
removal of dumped rubbish
and arranging a window
cleaning service for our
residents' homes. We very
much appreciated the funding
raised by Tower Hamlets
Film Office; it contributes to
improving the quality of life for
our local communities"
Rebecca Collings, Chair of
JAGO says "Jago Actions
Group's neighbourhood area,
south of Arnold Circus and
facing the Goodsyard, is very
popular with film crews and
photographers. While it can
be a distraction for residents
trying to get to work or get
their kids to school, it's great
to see the area put to creative
use, especially the longderelict
Goodsyard site.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout
is due for release on 26 th July.
Cassius Powell with
Ross Askell on mindful
fitness, tennis and Ibiza
Let’s face it; the world has gone fitness crazy. Protein is
top of the nutrient pile and fat percentages outweigh IQs.
But, we’re adamant that fitness should still be fun. Taking
yourself too seriously as part of any workout is just, well, too
serious. And with so many people suffering from stressrelated
illnesses there’s no better time to take stock of
keeping fit and staying mindful at the same time.
I’m a personal trainer and dancer, and my partner Ross
Askell is a tennis coach. We’ve been living in Hackney
for over ten years and we can’t get enough of what the
Borough has to offer fitness-wise. In fact, we’ve recently
returned to Victoria Park after a year away in Ibiza because
we were missing it so much.
Ross discovered his love of tennis at the age of 11. His
enthusiasm impressed his local club so much that they
sponsored him to earn his coaching qualification at 18. He
then spent over ten years coaching in and around Hackney,
Tennis is a hobby that
brings a lot of joy and
can prove mentally
transformational
with both schools and private
clients, and also taught at an
exclusive boarding school
in New York. His experience
and outgoing personality
eventually landed him the
role of Tennis Development
Officer at The Olympic Park,
where The Tennis Foundation
trained him to coach children
and adults with physical and
mental disabilities, including
blind tennis and wheelchair
tennis.
Ross's unrivalled passion for
the game has seen him coach
players from the age of 3 to a
knee buckling 80 - a couple
with tennis lessons on their
bucket list - and has transformed novices into accomplished
players. Tennis is physically demanding and combines
mental strength with technical ability. ‘Social interaction is
so important at all ages but especially as you get older, says
Ross. ‘It’s a hobby that brings a lot of joy and if you stick
with it can prove mentally transformational as well as being
a lot of fun.’
I also started at an early age, when I was (thankfully) forcibly
dragged to a tap dancing class by my mum at the age of
three. I was classically trained in jazz, tap and modern
dance but it was my love of music videos that really inspired
me to dance. I would video
tape Top Of The Pops
and learn the routines to
MJ, Madonna and Janet
Jackson - a talent that
has led me to run regular
Beyoncé/Diva dance
workshops and earned me
a recent front-page feature
in The Guardian.
My confidence as a
dancer and teacher has
taken time to develop as I
suffered with anorexia as
a teenager and I stopped
dancing for several years.
It was debilitating but
that experience made me
the strong person that I
am today. I’m currently working on a book that details my
experiences with an eating disorder, and also explores male
body image and masculinity in modern society.
Part of the reason I now work as a personal trainer is that
I want to assist others who suffer from low self-esteem to
improve their confidence through fitness. I truly think that
exercise, when coupled with an understanding of habits
and self-belief, can transform your life to help you achieve
your aspirations.
Whilst in Ibiza we worked for The Body Camp, a holistic,
transformational retreat. We learnt a great deal about
limiting attitudes and self-criticisms that are present in even
the most positive of personalities. It was an eye-opening
experience and has informed the way we approach our
own coaching and teaching.
We believe that fitness should first and foremost be fun
and cathartic, and as teachers, Ross and I endeavour to
bring out the best in our clients. Whether it’s living out
the fantasy of being Beyoncé for two hours, nailing a
topspin or increasing fitness levels, we’ve got a lifetime of
knowledge and experience between us. Here’s to a summer
of sweating, burning calories and enjoying life.
Flow Architecture is very pleased to invite the
residents of Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham
to join the HeartBit Walks. The event, part of the
London Festival of Architecture 2018, has been
developed in partnership with the UCL Bartlett
BPro Master in Urban Design to explore the use
the HeartBit emotional sensing kit to map the
participants’ affective reactions to the adjacencies
of Here East.
While walking along the local branches of the River
Lee and the Hertford Union Canal, the team will
collect biometric information and map the emotional
response of the participants to the environment. The
detailed emotional insights will be visualised for
discussions with the participants and the extended
event’s public and progressively uploaded in an
online archive that will remain live and searchable
after the conclusion of the Festival.
The event is free for all and no advance registration
is necessary. Tickets will be allocated on the day on
a first time first basis.
Join Flow Architecture's
HeartBit Walks for a unique
opportunity to take part in
creating a sensory map of the
areas around Here East
The section of the River Lee that borders the east side of
Hackney Wick, branching to the west into the Hertford
Union Canal, houses a culturally diverse community
of active users, ranging from cycling and pedestrian
commuters, to residential boats owners, runners, passersby
and to less fortunate rough sleepers.
The HeartBit Walks project, initiated by Flow Architecture
in conjunction UCL Bartlett BPro Master in Urban Design,
intends to collect detailed emotional insights on the current
use of the canal walk, ultimately
aiming to raise the awareness of risk
perception in the area.
By mapping the affective reaction
of selected participants to the canal
walks and with the publication of
the resulting emotional maps in an
online archive, the project intends to
offer a platform for the exploration
of the diverse identities in the area
Building an
empowering
diary of the
community's
collective
voice.
and an opportunity for the local community to build an
empowering diary of its collective voice.
The project is articulated in two parts. A workshop open
to UCL Bartlett BPro Urban Design students took place at
the Bartlett School of Architecture in May. The two-day
workshop focused on the construction of wearable sensing
devices that, drawing on methods pioneered by artist
Christian Nold in 2007, will be used to collect combined
biometric (galvanic-skin response) and GPS information.
The project continues as a two-day
event, part of the London Festival
of Architecture 2018 which is
where you can join it. The event will
take place at UCL Here East and
along the nearby canal walks, where
selected participants will be invited
to test the sensing devices during explorative local walks.
The collected data will be published in an online archive to
constitute a searchable sensory map of the area.
Eating In
Food blogger and natural chef Diana
Warrings ushers in the summer with Raw
coconut & vanilla crème brûlée
We are finally in June, the time of strawberries and other summer fruit. Although not locally grown,
coconuts tastes best during the summer months too, and makes a delicious combination with
strawberries. This raw crème brûlée is a fantastic and refreshing, fibre and antioxidant-rich post barbecue
dessert or afternoon snack. It’s quick and easy to make, and you can, of course, choose other fresh
summer fruit like blueberries, raspberries or apricots as a topping.
Method
1. Start with soaking the desiccated coconut in the rice milk or if using
fresh coconut, peel and cut into smaller pieces for an easier blend.
2. Then put all ingredients, apart from the psyllium husk, in a blender,
blend until smooth.
3. Last add the psyllium husk, blend again until you get a nice smooth
texture. The mix will turn out quite thick; this is due to the psyllium
husk. Please add a little more milk if you feel it's too thick.
4. Fill into dessert bowls and leave to set in the fridge for a couple of
hours or over night.
5. Serve with a generous drizzle of maple syrup and fresh strawberries
or summer fruit.
Enjoy!
26 LOVEEAST
Ingredients
1 cup of coconut cream (fresh or
canned),
1 cup of rice milk
1 small vanilla pod (scraped out
content, keep pod and add to
coffee, salt, or coconut sugar to
flavour it)
1 cup of fresh or desiccated
coconut (soak desiccated
coconut in the rice milk for 2
hours or, better, overnight)
1 tbsp of ground almonds
1 tbsp of maple syrup
1 tbsp psyllium husk
Organic maple syrup and
strawberries or summer berries
to garnish
Serves 3 - 4
Kaz discovers new kid on E13's Green Street
block, The Erstwhile Parrot
Those familiar with Upton Park's famous (and, it has to be said, infamous) Green Street, know it's
not overflowing with places for a Damn Fine Cup of Coffee. Instead, it sparkles
with Asian wedding shops (in fact, future brides from across Europe - and
beyond - travel to East Shopping Centre to shop for the Big Day), and
was the former home to West Ham United FC until the ground's
demolition in 2017. So, Green Street wouldn't
be on your Cool Places to Have a Coffee
radar - until now.
Enter the recently opened Erstwhile Parrot,
where you can wile away some time over a
coffee and delicious, freshly prepared food in
a warm and friendly atmosphere. It's an oasis
for coffee lovers and foodies alike, so it's hardly
surprising that it's made quite an impression with
the locals. The menu includes speciality coffee, looseleaf
teas (I can personally recommend the Lemon, Orange, Ginger & Thyme
tea, a house specialty that is tasty, refreshing and healthy), cakes and pastries,
light lunches and a changing menu of brunches at the weekend.
Charm and service with a smile
Three things set this place apart from anything else in the vicinity: the
atmosphere, the food and the staff. The cafe is furnished with cosy sofas
and easy chairs, along with owner Anthony Attah's keen eye for detail - the
cups and plates are as far from stark, generic white stoneware as you can
imagine - creating a warm, comfortable vibe. An eclectic choice of background
music is relaxing rather than overpowering so it's the perfect place to have a
natter, meet friends (the cafe is child and dog friendly, and there's even a toy
cupboard filled with books, puzzles and assorted kid-friendly things).
The food is delicious, freshly prepared and beautifully presented, with a
changing menu in addition to staples such as avocado on sourdough toast,
cakes and freshly baked breads. I had a Mediterranean Platter (pictured) that
was reasonably priced at £7.50, generous in portion, and absolutely delicious.
Lest we forget that this is a coffee
house, the coffee is also very good, and
in the summer months, iced coffees and
fruit smoothies are on offer.
Lastly, the staff always have a friendly smile, are only too happy to
help and are truly engaged with the community. As Anthony says,
“this is just the beginning of a long-term project and we hope to
be an integral part of the community for a long time to come."
This is a great place for a weekend brunch or to enjoy a cuppa
while watching the world pass by.
The wine guide
Orsolya Ajvazov from Vinarius
explains about Vegan Wines
As interest in vegan
and vegetarian
diets grows, our
customers at
Vinarius often
ask which wines
are suitable for
these two types of
regime.
In general, there
is a bit of a
misconception
about vegan wines
and how they are
produced. Also, it is
a very technical subject, which can clash with the
approach of some philosophies, such as veganism.
First of all we need to make clear that wine can
only be obtained from the fermentation of fresh
grape juice (also called must) and no animal
product is present (or should be present) in any
bottle.
After fermentation the new wine is a hazy mixture
of different things, including small solid particles
such as yeasts, proteins and tannins. Although
all these compounds are natural and harmless
for humans, they may cause imbalances and
sediments in the bottle, especially for wines that
need to be consumed relatively young. That’s why
most winemakers choose to clarify their wine.
process. But the use of these products is not
always acceptable to vegetarians and vegans.
Nowadays, many producers, especially organic
and biodynamic winemakers, are choosing not
to clarify or filter their wine or they use veganfriendly
agents such as bentonite (a clay-based
product) or pea flour.
However, not all vegan wines are certified as such
because the certification is a further cost with lots
of extra paperwork for the producers, usually with
minimal marketing benefits. At Vinarius we work
very closely with the wine producers and we know
exactly which wine is vegan and which one is not.
So if you are looking for a bottle of wine suitable
for vegetarians or vegans ask your trusted Wine
Merchant!
This process is called fining, which is often done
with the help of some fining agents, including
casein (milk protein), albumen (egg whites) and
isinglass (gelatin from fish bladder). Any such
agent is entirely removed from the wine after the
clarification. To be precise, the fining agent is not
an ingredient of the wine itself and there is only a
temporary contact between the product(s) from
animal sources and the wine during the fining
LOVEEAST JUNE - JULY 2018 29
Exploring East London
It's Good to Walk...
Hackney resident of 32 years and history enthusiast Sean Gubbins tells us
why he set up WalkHackney and the history walks you can follow with him
One way to get to know the community you live in
is to walk its streets. Noticing the street names, the
shapes of the roads, the different styles of buildings,
they all draw out questions. What was here before
the streets? Why are they named as they are? Who
lived here? What were their lives like? Answers to
these questions start to give you a knowledge and
understanding of how your neighbourhood was
formed: a connection that lets
you feel a part of the community,
giving a sense of belonging.
That is what I want my walks to
give people. Though, sadly, the
murders on Hackney’s streets
have not stopped, the borough
has changed immensely in the
last ten years. It has become a
cool, much sought after, place to
move to. That was not the case
16 years ago when I first offered
local history walks in Hackney.
Clapton’s ‘Murder Mile’ was
notorious; many felt scared to
walk through the streets on their
own. A walk with others provided
safety in numbers.
Regularly scheduled walks
A few local and other London
organisations occasionally put on
a history walk in Hackney. Unlike
neighbouring boroughs, though, there was no one
organisation in Hackney offering a regular schedule
of local history walks. Having trained and led walks
as a history guide with the Clerkenwell and Islington
Guides Association (CIGA), I felt that Hackney had
as interesting, if not a more fascinating, history to be
told. In 2002, I convinced local historian and heritage
campaigner, the late Mike Gray, to join me in offering
three Hackney history walks on a monthly basis. Our
intention was that local people, as well as visitors to
our borough, should have available a regular offering
of walks telling them about Hackney’s history.
Since 2002, having retired as a History teacher and
with an MA in Historical Research under my belt,
I have devised and researched, using a variety of
what makes up today’s Hackney. They range from
Stamford Hill in the north to Shoreditch in the south;
De Beauvoir in the west to Homerton in the east,
with Stoke Newington, Shacklewell, Upper Clapton,
Kingsland, Hackney Downs, Lower Clapton, Dalston,
Heart of Hackney, London Fields, Rhodes Town,
Haggerston and Hoxton in between. I shall devise
a few more until all of Hackney
is covered with a network of
interconnecting history walks.
Hackney, then and now
Each area of Hackney has its
own stories to tell, of places long
changed, surviving buildings,
events and people, some more
recent than others. I have no
favourite; for me each area is as
intriguing as the next and each is
continually changing. While some,
in one way or another, are quite
distinct, it is fascinating to trace
the same themes running through
the history of different parts,
whether it be non-conformism,
horticulture, radicalism,
immigration or efforts to tackle
poverty and social deprivation.
The walk schedule runs all twelve
months of the year, offering two
walks per month. If just one person turns up, rain,
snow or shine, the walk will happen. Each walk lasts
between two and three hours. Many include a visit
inside an historical building en route: medieval tower,
Tudor hall, Elizabethan church, dissident chapel, a
church of strange rites or to see impressive Victorian
and mid-20th century murals. Others pass through
some of the open spaces that make up 15% of
Hackney.
Each walk costs £10, £8 for concessions. Every walker
is given a modern and an historic map with the route
marked out. Photos are passed around at stops along
the way to illustrate how places have changed. The
walks attract a range of people: people who have
lived in Hackney all their lives and can add their own

bit of local colour as we stroll along; the Hackney-born
who have returned to walk down memory lane; others,
both British and foreign born, recently moved into the
area; visitors from other parts of London who want
to find out about a different area of our city as well as
tourists moving off the typical London tourist trail. 60%
of people on the walks return for another. Not only
is getting out and about good exercise, walking with
others is sociable. Friendships have been formed on my
walks, including at least one leading to marriage!
Roger Love talks to Nigel, one of Urban Escrima's
senior instructors, who teaches a thoroughly modern
martial art under the railway arches at London Fields
What is your class and where does it take place?
We run Urban Escrima - a martial art for self-defence - at London Fields Fitness Studio. We started our training
sessions and workshops around six years ago. Some of our work is with sticks, but everything has an unarmed
version, too.
What makes your class different from others?
We have a friendly, approachable club. Often people
that want to start self-defence training feel intimidated
to attend their first lesson. We pride ourselves in
making people feel safe and comfortable right from the
start, to minimise their nerves.
Who are your teachers?
Our main instructors are Charlie and me, Nigel, who
both have around 20 years experience training
in Escrima. We also have the following assistant
instructors: Nacho, Cat, Abid, Ed, Andrew, Matt and
Kris.
What happens in your classes?
Training involves learning skills to defend yourself,
awareness to avoid confrontations and an
understanding the law in relation to self-defence.
Through training, people get fitter, stronger and gain
confidence. We teach Escrima Concepts which is a
martial art. Escrima originates from the Philippines and
has gained popularity from films such as The Bourne
Identity and the Bond film Quantum of Solace.
Describe your classes in three words.
Fitness, confidence, fun
What kind of person would like your classes?
We attract men and women of all age ranges and fitness levels. Some have
previous martial art training; some are complete beginners. So, all decent
people are welcome, and due to our friendly approach, people who may be
lacking in confidence but want to learn skills to protect themselves and their
loved ones will find our training sessions very beneficial.
Who would hate them?
People with a closed mindset, who don’t make an effort to learn.
What makes you most proud of your classes?
It’s always an amazing feeling watching someone grow their skill set and confidence. We sometimes reminisce
with members on their first training session and feel a sense of pride watching their development.
What's the most memorable moment from your classes?
There are so many memories but one always comes to mind. After running a women’s self-defence workshop, one
of the attendees was a victim of a mugging. She told us that prior to the workshop she would have panicked and
probably done something silly. Instead, she took on board the training she received and remained fully calm and
confident during the ordeal and came through it with without harm.
