Our vision for Woodchurch Road Primary
School reflects a passionate commitment to
learning and recognition of the uniqueness of
individual learners.
General Information
Woodchurch Road caters for children ages 4—11 years. The school is a well-established urban school
approximately one mile from Birkenhead. The School was built in 1903 and there have been many additions
and changes made to the building and use of accommodation over the years.
The school has 2 floors, the ground floor where the younger children (Foundation 2 and Key Stage1) are
currently housed. The second floor accommodates the Key Stage 2 children. The school has two halls,
which are used for P.E., Dramas, Music and Assemblies. Meals are cooked on our premises and served
in both halls.
We work very hard to make the inside of the building bright and cheerful. Our KS1 and Foundation area
have recently been refurbished, and the F2 provision has been extended providing a lovely space for
outdoor learning. All of our classrooms are fairly large. The school was built to accommodate 600 but we
now have approximately 440 children on roll. We have pre-school located on site which is privately run by
Ladybirds Pre-School. We provide wrap-around care with our Before and After School Club
“ Little Buddies”, which is also open during school holidays, details can be provided on request.
Absence, Holidays & Day Time
Appointments
If your child is too ill to come to school please
telephone us to let us know and send a note with your
child on his/her return. Absences without reasons have
to be recorded as unauthorised. We are obliged to report
the number of authorised and unauthorised absences
during the school year.
It is essential for parents to supply the school with their
home address, telephone number and mobile phone
number if applicable. Two other contact numbers, place
of work or close relatives/friends in case they need to be
contacted in an emergency or if a child is sick would be
most helpful. Please remember to inform us of any
changes during the school year.
Holidays During Term Time
From 1 September 2013 new DfE regulations
came into force regarding leave of absence for
children from school. The current law does not give
any entitlement to parents to take their children on
holiday during term time. Any application for leave
must be in exceptional circumstances and the
Headteacher must be satisfied that the circumstances
warrant granting of leave. Please be
aware an unauthorised absence to go on holiday is
highly likely to incur a penalty charge of £60 per
child per parent.
School finishes at 3.15pm and we would ask you to
collect your child promptly. Although we will always
care for the children, they become anxious if they
have not been picked up when their friends have all
gone. Your child needs to know that you will always
be there when school finishes.
Punctuality
The school day begins at 8.48am and we ask that
children arrive promptly to ensure a positive start to
their learning. Please ensure your child is not late for
school. Children who arrive need to be signed in by
an adult using the electronic system at the school
office on arrival. Any late attendance is recorded on
the end of year school Annual Report to Parents.
ADMISSION ARRANGEMENTS
How parents can apply for their child to be admitted to our school
The admissions number for this Reception year and future years is 72. Your child is entitled to start school
in the September following their fourth birthday and must start school by the beginning of the term after
their fifth birthday. An induction programme of visits is arranged, to ease children into school life,
As our school is a community school, the school determines the admission arrangements in agreement
with the Local Authority (LA). The LA is therefore the ‘Admissions Authority’ for our school. The
regulations for entry to each school, where the Admissions Authority is the LA, are published each year by
the LA. Parents can receive a copy of these regulations directly from the LA.
The LA publishes a composite admissions prospectus each year, which gives information about how
parents can apply for a place in the school of their choice. Parents have a right to express a preference for
the school of their choice and they should do so on the application form. Expressing a preference does
not, in itself, guarantee a place at this school. Application forms can be obtained from the Education
Department of the LA and should be completed by the date stipulated on the forms or you can apply
online. The LA notifies parents about the school place as soon as all applications have been considered.
In this area, children enter school in the academic year they become five. There is one admissions date
per year, early in September (i.e. at the start of the school year). Therefore, parents who would like their
child to be admitted to this school during the year their child is five should ensure that they complete the
necessary application form.
All applications are dealt with by the LA and they should receive them in January, please check with LA
for deadline dates . Application forms from the LA or alternatively you can visit their website https://
STARTING SCHOOL
THE FOUNDATION STAGE
At Woodchurch Road Primary School we believe
that high quality early years experience in school
is of vital importance and can have a lasting effect
on a child’s attitudes to education, personal
and social skills and attainments.
First days at school for young children are a mixture
of all kinds of emotions. The school day and
its demands can be quite daunting and, at first,
very tiring. Children and their parents/guardians
are invited to spend some time with us in an informal
way before admission. This gentle introduction
is intended to make the children’s first day a
little less daunting—and the parent’s first day a
little less anxious!
The meeting is held with the Headteacher, the
Foundation Stage co-ordinator and the Foundation
stage staff.
The Foundation Stage curriculum follows the new
Statutory Framework. All areas of the curriculum are
covered both inside and outside, and contains goals
for the children to work towards. The children build up
a learning journey showing examples of their work
and photographs of some of their other activities,
which contribute to the teachers’ assessments of
each child. At all times through the year parents are
invited to contribute to, share and ask about their
child’s Learning Journey.
An induction evening is held for the parents of the
new intake. This meeting outlines the induction
process and gives parents a chance to meet the
staff and to find out anything they want to know
about the early education in general.
THE CURRICULUM
The national curriculum is taught at Woodchurch
Road Primary School. Our teachers work hard to
ensure the curriculum is as stimulating and exciting
as possible, so that the children enjoy learning and
are inspired to become lifelong learners. We have
built in many links with the local area and we are
lucky enough to have a wealth of resources on our
doorstep and we therefore plan to continue taking
our children on as many trips as possible, to excite
and interest them in their learning and to create a
real life context to learning.
Planning for the Foundation 2 follows the
Foundation Stage Curriculum.
The areas of learning are :
Personal Social development, Physical Development,
Communication and Language, Literacy,
Mathematics, Understanding the World and
Expressive Arts and design.
All children follow a broad enjoyable and enriched
curriculum. The National Curriculum is followed
and consists of :-
Core Subjects : English Maths
Foundation Subjects : Art
Science
Music
R.E.
P.E.
PMFL
I.T.
D.T.
PHSE
Geography
History
Teachers in the same year groups work together
to ensure consistency and parity of experiences.
The Foundation subjects are now delivered as
themed and linked units of work, for example, the
Year 5 children enhance their knowledge about
the Tudors through art, music, dance and design
technology. We encourage the children to use the
skills taught in other areas of the curriculum e.g.
English and Geography. IT is a strong feature of
all our teaching. All classrooms have interactive
whiteboards. We use a range of different methods
to help your child learn and prepare for their life
long journey.
Equal Opportunities
At Woodchurch Road Primary School the children
learn that all people are treated with respect regardless
of race, gender, class creed or abilities.
Children will learn about other peoples lives,
beliefs and be given a chance to consider the
concerns of others. We believe that it is only
through understanding that people can learn
tolerance and be able to actively celebrate the
differences between us and all that enrich our
lives.
Woodchurch Road Primary supports the Equal
Opportunity & Race Equality Policies of Wirral LA
and expects everyone to actively support these
policies and challenge all incidents of intolerance
or abuse.
SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS
Whatever difficulties any
child at Woodchurch Road
Primary School may have,
the school aims through its
SEN policy to encourage and
recognise achievement.
Definition of Special Educational Needs
A child has special needs if (s)he has a difficulty which
calls for special educational provision to be made for him or
her. A child has a learning difficulty if (s)he has a
significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of
children of the same age or has a disability which either
prevents or hinders the child from making use of
educational facilities of a kind provided for children of the
same age in schools within the area of the LA.
In catering for children with SEN the Governing Body at
Woodchurch Road Primary School aims to:
1. Promote an early identification of children with special
needs.
2. Help the child with SEN to fulfil his/her potential.
3. Promote an awareness of children with special needs.
4. Foster good relations between staff, parents, support
services and other outside agencies.
5. Ensure access to the National Curriculum and to offer
modifications and disapplications only when necessary.
The Governing Body has stated in its policy document that
they will:
Do their best to ensure that the necessary provision is
made for any pupil who has SEN.
Ensure that teachers in the school are aware of the importance
of identifying and providing for those pupils who
have SEN.
A governor in charge of SEN has been appointed who invites
regular feedback at both committee and full governing
body level. This governor also evaluates the success of
the education provided for children with SEN.
The school will identify a child’s needs at the earliest possible
moment and take appropriate action within its resources
and enlist support of parents and appropriate
agencies.
The responsibility has been delegated to the Special
Needs Co-ordinator, which is at present Miss Short. A
copy of the full policy is available in school and further
information may be obtained from Miss Short.
Children with special needs will be offered extra help in
the classroom by their class teacher and/or a teaching
assistant who will take advice on preparing appropriate
programmes of work and strategies. Some children will
also be assigned time each week when they can work in a
small group. Some subjects are taught in ability groups
which allows pupils needs to be met in smaller teaching
groups. Numeracy and literacy are priority subjects.
SEN must be addressed in the best way resources allow.
The school will endeavour to maximise the efficient use of
resources and expertise available in the interest of all
pupils with SEN.
All children have equal access to a broad and balanced
curriculum. For children with SEN it will be necessary to
differentiate work to enable them to work at an appropriate
level. Children with SEN will be able to take part in all
school activities unless their participation would adversely
affect the health and safety of either themselves or others.
The Governors of Woodchurch Road Primary School
encourage and support regular Inservice training for the
Headteacher, the SENCO and class teachers and
Teaching Assistants.
The SENCO will lead and liaise with the inservice training
of staff.
The school will, whenever possible , work in partnership
with the parents, taking into account the needs of their
child(ren). Once a child has been identified as having a
special need, parents will be informed and invited in to discuss
how these needs might be addressed. The child’s
progress will then be monitored as he/she moves through
the school.
Pupils With A Disability
Woodchurch Road has a very successful history in
providing mainstream education for pupils with a disability.
We currently have facilities to assist access to the school.
Ramps have been installed for pupils in wheelchairs. A lift
has been fitted in school to enable disabled access
between floors.
Help is readily sought from outside agencies and the
school maintains excellent relationships with them.
Contact is usually made by the SENCO . Apart from
Learning Support Services, parental permission is always
obtained before contact regarding an individual child is
made.
PASTORAL CARE
At Woodchurch Road Primary School we are aware that difficulties - social, personal and cultural,
encountered by our children can affect their individual development and progress. Our pastoral care
policy, when operating within the general atmosphere of mutual respect which we strive to engender,
aims to identify these difficulties and take steps to minimise them.
The policy operates in four main areas:-
a) Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of the children.
b) Management of Behaviour
c) Parental involvement
d) Child Protection Issues
Our aim is to develop a sense of self discipline coupled with an awareness of the needs of others and we
try to ensure good relationships by a variety of strategies. We are aware, however, that there needs to be
some rules and as a result we have introduced a code of conduct devised by teachers and children. This
is displayed by every class and at various places around the school.
The school has a Behaviour Management Policy, please ask at reception if you would like to see a copy.
Our Code of Conduct was written and designed to encourage the children to care for the school and each
other so it is a safe, happy and welcoming place. We trust you will remind your child of the school
expectations and encourage him/her to keep our code. Your support of school discipline is vital to its
success. Our zones of behaviour clearly indicate those children who are behaving well.
EDUCATIONAL VISITS
Visits are arranged throughout the year as they form a vital part of school life. They support, enrich and
stimulate work in all curriculum areas. Our charging policy is in accordance with the LA policy and parents
will be asked to make a voluntary contribution towards the cost of trips and visits relating to the curriculum.
Visits organised include:-Chester, Colomendy, Liverpool Philharmonic, Liverpool Museum,
Art Gallery, Walker Art Gallery & Conservation Centre and Chester Zoo.
Williamson
Trip to Kingswood Colomendy

( please ask the school office for details ).
Who can get free school meals?
they receive:
claim free school meals for those children you are fostering, from school year 3 and
above.
Children in Foundation 2, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to a free school meal,
(Universal Infant Free School Meals) .
HOMEWORK
We believe homework is an effective way of supporting work going on in school.
It also provides opportunities for children and parents to share in the work going
on in school.
We feel regular reading at home is the most important way of supporting your children. We would ask that you read
every day if possible, and record this in our reading record book. Young children may only read for 5-10 minutes
while older children may want to read for longer. The more fluent, independent readers in years 5 and 6 may not
want to read to you but could discuss the book with you.
In addition to reading children in Keystage 1 may be asked to find some information or bring items from home into
school. These short activities will relate to work going on in the classroom and will be given from time to time, as
and when appropriate.
At Keystage 2 the children are asked to complete Literacy and Numeracy tasks which relate
to work going on in the classroom. This will be discussed with the children on a weekly
basis. The tasks set will challenge all abilities and should take no more than 20-30
minutes.
Pupils in Years 5 and 6 will be set weekly Literacy and Numeracy homework, which will
reflect current work. We feel this will prepare them for Year 7 when homework will be set
every night.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
We ask that children wear school uniform to stress the fact that we all belong to the same school;
it also means that all children can look the same regardless of money or social status.
Grey Trousers / Grey Shorts or Grey Skirt / Pinafore
White Shirt / Poloshirt or White Blouse
Bottle Green sweatshirt
Green Gingham Dress (Summer Term)
Sensible Black shoes (no trainers)
PE kit
White T-shirt, Black shorts
White / Black pumps
All items of clothing must be clearly named. P.E. kit should be kept in a draw string pump bag
and clearly named. This should remain in school to be at hand when required.
Jewellery
Jewellery cannot be worn in school as necklaces, rings and earrings have all proved to be dangerous
