Down to Business: OTMs
Tips on how to write a really good OTM:
Be Month Specific
Be very detailed and expand on ideas
If you use acronyms, identify what the organization
name is then list the acronym
 i.e. Associated Residence Halls (ARH)
Write your OTM in a word document to check for
grammar and mechanics
you have up to 600 words, USE THEM!
Have fun and be creative with them
An example of a not so good OTM
“Herky is amazing resident assistant and does his job
well. When he is on-call, he does it with a smile, respond
to crisis situations, and help his fellow RAs. Every month,
he coordinates one program for his residents, which
includes a movie night and board games. Often times, I go
to Herky and ask him for directions of building locations
on campus or able to have a simple conversation. I feel
Herky should deserve RA of the month because he is
friendly and does his job well.”
 Vague and broad
Nothing above and beyond the call of duty
 Not month specific
An example of a good OTM
In the month of September, I would like to nominate , Associated Residence Halls (ARH)
Associations Director, for Executive Board Member of the Month. Katie played a great
role for the ARH of Director by working on the West Side Block Party, preparing for ARH
training workshops, developing hall liaisons, creation of a "Hall of the Year" point
system, and scholarship information.
At our residence life area, the residence halls are divided into two sections by the city's
river. We have a west- and east-side. At the beginning of the fall semester, the west side
residence halls provides a social program called the "West Side Block Party". It was held
on Friday, September 4th. It is a time for the students, who live in the west side residence
halls, to enjoy music, carnival games, volleyball tournament, and food. This year, ARH
took on the responsibility of tie-dying at the event. Katie organized this section by
ordering supplies, figuring out the logistics, and kept constant communication with the
professional staff. At the event, she directed people to stations, created the mixtures of
the dye, and welcomed the students. As a result, ARH served several hundred students
with great results and fun times.
In addition, I was proud of Katie as this was her first organized program. By this
nomination, Katie Wollan has done a great job in the month of September in her role as
the ARH Associations Director. I am pleased as her advisor with her work and dedication
to her position as it is a new direction to a higher level.
