Many are the pit-falls in the way of the newly-engaged gir], n
the least of them.being the difficulty of getting on with " his rei
tions." If she ia already acquainted with them the situation
easier, but if they are entire strangers she will have togothrouj
a difficult ordeal. She will be pitilessly scrutinized and criticize
and she will find it difficult to get on with them, being total
ignorant of their peculiarities and prejudices, their likes and d
likes. If they, spontaneously, take a liking to her, most of the dif
culties will vanish, but if she becomes the object of some of tho
unwarrantable prejudices people are apt to take, her way will
made thorny indeed.
She will be wise if she discourages her lover from giving h(
very expensive presents, especially if be has got to make his w aj j
the world. If she gets into the habit of burdening himself by paing
a sort of toll of constant and costly offerings, it will handicc
him and will, perhaps, be the means of getting him into debt. Th
loving thought prompting the gift means more than the gift i
itself to tha recipient in such cases, and, therefore, it is not nece
sary that it should be a costly one-
A mistake some newly-engaged girls are apt to make is that o
making a sort of tame cats of their lovers, and wanting them ti
be always at hand to be shown off to and introduced to Ibeii
numerous friends and relations. If the man chafes at this and get"
restive under such an ordeal the girl wouid be sensible in denyim
herself this pleasure. Time enough for him to make the acquaint
ance of her people and friends when they are married, and, perhap-*
it would be well to give him time to seek them out himself Nf
doubt a girl ia pi-oud of her newly-acqnired lover and ansious tc
show him off. but he need not be unduly worried over it, especialjv
if he is one of the retiring, reserved sort.
