Mars Reserve are usually at 

their spectacular best in July. 

Ryde Hunters Hill Flora & Fauna 

Preservation Society have 

organised Wildflower walks on 

Saturday July 14. Meet at the 

Visitor Centre in the Reserve. 

Walks depart hourly with first 

walk beginning 11am and last

Gladesville Sergeant’s last salute before retirement 

“It has been a wonderful opportunity to serve the community.” 

In the 1970s sexiest men joked about 

women in the police force and they were 

called the eleven week wonders. 

Forty years later Gladesville based Sergeant 

Kerri MacDonald has retired from 

the police force after a distinguished career 

that proved the doubters wrong. 

“When I joined the police force in 1978 there 

were only four women in my graduation class and 

only 35 police women, all up,” Sgt MacDonald 

said. 

“I didn’t even work alongside another police 

woman until the 1980’s and I was one of the first 

police women to move from wearing skirts to 

wearning pants.” 

Sgt MacDonald went to school in Cheltenham 

and was torn between a career as a doctor or 

a physio but chose police work, a new area for 

women. 

Her career has taken her from traffic duty to 

general duties to intelligence gathering and 

through changes that have impacted on all aspects 

of police work. 

“Our resources and equipment have changed 

considerably with the introduction of tasers, the 

Glock pistol, computers and of course the rise in 

terrorism and the specialist counter terrorist training 

we do,” she said. 

“With the use of the drug Ice, drug use and drug 

arrests have become a whole different ball game, 

a much higher risk for police.” 

In her career Sgt MacDonald has only had to 

draw her gun once - when a suspect went to 

punch her - but has faced her fair share of life 

threatening situations. 

“We had a really bad bushfire across Ryde, at 

one stage the fire was only a few hundred yards 

from us and the heat was so so intense we had 

to put on masks to stop our faces being burned. 

“The fire even set median strips on fire, it was 

a holocaust.” 

Some situations resulted in unexpected arrests 

while other arrests were made through Sgt Mac- 

Donald’s exemplary negotiating skills. 

“We were once called to check out a brand new 

Porsche which was crushed in an accident in 

Gladesville and amazingly we found three thousand 

dollars concealed inside. 

“We also had a car on fire on Bridge Road in 

Epping and we caught a guy fleeing the scene 

and when I interviewed him he confessed that 

he never could lie to a woman and admitted his 

crimes and I arrested him. 

“There are moments when police have to keep 

calm to get a result.” 

Sergeant MacDonald joined Gladesville Police 

station in the year 2000 after previous service in 

Five Dock. 

When asked if being a police officer was a good 

career for a woman she said. . . 

“It is a wonderful opportunity to serve the community 

and uphold the law,” she said. 

“You nered to be fit and it is not a job for the 

faint hearted but it is a job you can put your heart 

into.” 

Is there life after policing, Kerri ? 

“I’m going to play lots of golf at Massey Park, 

I got a hole in one the other day, so that’s not a 

bad start.”

NEUX proved to be the turning 

point of World War 1 - or 

The Great War as it was called 

- and Australian forces were 

significant in hastening the end 

of the war. They helped save 

Amiens which was the strategic 

centre on the Somme River 

and the major target of the 

German’s biggest campaign. 

My Uncle Henry Booth was 

“taken on strength” in the 38th 

Battalion and sent to the field 

on January 19, 1918 and saw 

action against the German 

Army Spring Offensive on 

the Western Front in March 

1918 and helped save Villers- 

Bretonneux. In so doing he 

laid down his own life in the 

field at Villers-Bretonneux.

the 50th Jubilee European 

Scouting Guilds Forum at 

Grossarl high in the Austrian 

Alps which I have attended 

over 35 times since 

1970 and it is where I met 

my fate in the form of a bride 

to be Ulrike Eichmeyer. 

We had an excursion to Salzburg 

where we were honoured 

by the State Governor Dr Wilfried 

Haslauer and Dr Josef 

Schochl Salzburg Landtages 

President and treated to a 

chamber concert and refreshments 

in the Alte Residenz 

in the city’s centre and lunch 

in the Salzburg Scout Guild’s 

Guildhouse nearby.

ON MONDAY we visited 

in Pilzen a former member 

of Sydney St George’s Guild 

Ph Dr Hana Hons Gerzanicova 

who returned to her native 

Czech Republic to reclaim 

her family home which 

had been taken over by the 

Communists during the Russian 

invasion to the country. 

Hana and her husband John 

Hons escaped from the 

country and couldn’t return 

fearing execution. In Australia 

they had six children 

including Rafaela who had 

a daughter Renae who turns 

out to be the young mum 

featured in our Mother’s Day 

front page photo of May 9! 

So naturally I took over a few 

copies of that edition of The 

Weekly Times for a proud 

grandma who celebrated 90 

golden years last week and to 

her mum Rafaela who is staying 

with her mum just now. 

Longtime TWT readers will 

remember the poems we used 

to publish on front page and 

inside on special occasions 

of Christmas, Easter and Anzac 

day and so on written by 

Hana. She has been awarded 

International Poet of the Year 

twice by the World Poets Association 

in Washington DC and 

awarded International Citizen 

of the Year by the Czech Parliament. 

A truly incredibly talented 

and marvellous person.

DRAFT COMMUNITY STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2028 

(Including the Delivery Program & Operational Plan) 

DRAFT BUDGET, FEES & CHARGES 2018/19 – 2027/28 

The Local Government Act 1993 Sections 402 and 405 provide that a council must complete a review of its 

Community Strategic Plan, Delivery Program and Operational Plan by 30 June in the year following the local 

government elections and its Budget and Fees & Charges on an annual basis. 

The suite of plans must be placed on public exhibition for a period of 28 days and comments from the community 

considered prior to final endorsement by the Council. 

The Draft Community Strategic Plan (10 year plan) gives both Council and the community a vision for the main 

priorities and aspirations for the future of the Hunters Hill local government area. This plan also includes: 

• Draft Delivery Program (4 year program) outlines what Council intends to do towards achieving the main priorities 

during its term of office. 

• Draft Operational Plan (one year plan) sets out the individual projects and activities that will be undertaken each year 

to achieve the commitments made in other supporting documents. 

The Draft Budget, Fees & Charges describes the Council operations and asset maintenance programs for the next 

ten years. The Budget also contains proposed Rates and Charges for the 2018/19 financial year. 

The draft budget includes a proposed increase of 2.3% in ordinary and special rates, which is the maximum allowable 

rate pegging limit announced by the Minister for Local Government. 

All interested parties are invited to view copies of the documents and provide feedback to Council. The documents are 

available to view at the following locations:

Dear Sir, 

TWT’s bizarre letters page 

is a source of constant 

amusement and bafflement 

– personally, I never miss it. 

But the most recent one 

(May 30) simply floored me, 

and raises the obvious question: 

Does the editor – to 

whom these constant racebaiting 

fact-free rants are 

addressed, or anyone on the 

TWT editorial team, actually 

read what it publishes? 

Maybe you do and the 

justification is “freedom of 

speech.” 

Well, who could disagree? 

I certainly don’t. 

Or, “We don’t censor our 

readers, we simply publish 

whatever they submit, 

no matter how long and 

incoherent and full of ad 

hominem, prejudice and 

rage – over and over again 

whenever they submit letters 

without interference or 

judgement.” 

I think that must be it. 

So another question arises: 

Is constantly publishing the 

sort of material that the majority 

of potential readers in 

TWT-land – their customers, 

clients, staff and families will 

find offensive wise? 

Doesn’t a free newspaper 

need the goodwill and support 

of all groups in its territory? 

Naturally in the name of 

“freedom of speech” and 

“non-censorship” I’ll expect 

to see my critique of TWT’s 

policy of constantly publishing 

the race-hate of a tiny 

handful of its serial letterwriters 

also published. 

If its not, I’ll make my own 

assumptions on where the 

newspaper stands on the 

issue. Soon enough, if they 

haven’t already, so will everyone

After hearing about the 

huge Telstra outage this 

week, I could not sympathise 

more with all the 

people whose lives and 

businesses were inconvenienced

I can visualise Ludwig van

millions still as the greatest 

composer of all-time, sitting 

under the light of a candle 

composing what he is supposed 

to have thought his 

greatest works, completely 

deaf, with no treatment of 

any kind available. 

What would he have 

thought of Telstra? 

“Pah humbug!”(in

Teacher ‘marks’ 

letter writer! 

Dear Sir, 

Many of your readers 

(but perhaps not Carole 

Clarke) may know that I 

teach History. 

Year 9 is especially interesting 

as part of the curriculum 

focuses on the making 

of modern Australia. 

I thought I would mark 

the essay “All Entitled to 

our Opinions” submitted 

by Ms Clarke. 

Overall, I have to agree 

that we are all entitled to 

our opinions. 

In a democracy, that is a 

given. 

So, as an opinion piece it 

would be unfair to evaluate 

the essay as if it necessarily 

bore any relation to 

historical evidence, agreed 

facts rather than prejudices 

or, indeed, truthfulness. 

Of course, the essay supports 

the concept of the 

“RIGHT” to hold beliefs. 

We once believed (not 

so long ago, please note) 

that gay people should be 

gaoled for being who they 

were; we once believed 

that Aboriginal people did 

not exist, and when that 

became patently absurd, 

that they were not citizens. 

So belief is not a good 

basis for her argument. 

Now let’s evaluate the 

essay for what it says: 

“Lane Cove is becoming 

a second Chatswood... 

where will it end?” 

We are to assume that 

this is a bad thing. Some 

evidence is presented in 

the next paragraph, so 

some marks for supporting 

her statement. 

“No separate suburbs 

only for them,” she states. 

Well, I suppose the Italians 

in Leichhardt, the 

Greeks in Marrickville, the 

Muslims around Lakemba, 

the Jews around Bondi, 

the South Africans around 

St. Ives were never so noticeable? 

Italian can still be heard 

on the streets of Eastwood. 

Who can remember 

when this area was an 

enclave? So no marks for 

evidence-based history 

here. 

Her essay deteriorates 

into a series of rhetorical 

questions about residency 

and drugs entering Australia 

all in support of her 

mentor, Mr Ikonomou and 

denigrating the apparent 

beliefs of Mr Newman. Excellent 

for a Year 9 debate 

but the opposition would 

soon demolish her arguments. 

So some marks for 

trying, I think. 

How to give her an overall 

comment? 

At parent-teacher evening, 

in order not to shatter 

her self esteem, I would 

gently suggest she focus 

on some research before 

she puts pen to paper. 

That she might take note 

of one of the other students 

in the class, that 

nice Shereen, who sits opposite 

her. 

She at least focuses 

on real people, not straw 

men. 

There’s Justin Li and 

Hugh Lee, there’s Peter 

Kim - no less individuals 

that the “many wrongs” 

Mr Ikonomou must have 

seen in his career. 

So, Carole’s final rating: 

on a scale of 1 to 10 (as 

top) she gets a very generous

Symphony Orchestra boasts an 

impressive line up of musicians 

THE RYDE Hunters Hill 

Symphony Orchestra 

(RHHSO) was the brainchild 

of local resident 

Rita Lepedjian. 

Rita along with Dr Raf 

Marcellino, Prof Levon 

Khachigian, Ian Cox and 

George Papallo OAM, 

launched the orchestra 

in December 2011. 

Shortly after, Hugh Lee 

OAM joined the Board. 

The inaugural concert 

was held at St Joseph’s 

College Hunters Hill in 

May 2012 where the 

world premiere of “From 

the Field of Mars” composed 

by Ryde City’s 

current Deputy Mayor 

Christopher Gordon was 

played. 

Since then, the Orchestra 

has performed over 

thirty concerts mostly 

under the baton of Dr 

Carlos Alvarado whose 

passion and dedication 

for music has given the 

orchestra considerable 

credibility.

of Hunters Hill Art Exhibition 

RECENT Hunters Hill 

Art Exhibition proved a 

resounding success with 

painter Mertim Gokalp 

the recipient of a second 

consecutive Hunters Hill 

Art Prize. 

The 64th annual exhibition 

drew 450 art enthusiasts 

to visit on Opening 

Night May 11. 

This Exhibition was 

displayed in three historic 

buildings namely: the 

Hunters Hill Town Hall, the 

Congregational Church 

and Vienna Cottage with 

the 20 Pop Up galleries 

connecting artists and local 

business. 

A feature of the Pop Up 

program this year was the 

outdoor sculptures exhibition 

in two locations. 

Over 380 finalists were 

selected from more than 

900 entries with a record 

number of sales and record 

numbers of visitors 

from all over Sydney visiting 

during the 10 day period. 

This Exhibition was another 

great success due to 

the high standard of works 

received and the wonderful 

work by volunteers who 

gave so generously of their 

time and expertise. 

For the second year 

running, painter Mertim 

Gokalp won the Hunters 

Hill Art Prize with his 

amazing photo realistic 

painting which captured 

the playful and charming 

essences of celebrity chef 

Manu Feildel.

Armenian community leaders welcome the City of Ryde’s recognition of Armenian speaking Artsakh

Ryde recognises the independence 

of Armenian Artsakh in historic vote 

THE City of Ryde has became 

the world’s first council to recognise 

the independence of 

the Republic of Artsakh. 

Armenian speaking Artsakh is situated 

between Armenia and Turkic 

speaking Azerbaijan, which claims 

sovereignty over it and has been 

involved in a war to stop independence. 

City of Ryde councillors voted 

unanimously to not only recognise 

Artsakh but to call on the Federal 

Government to follow Ryde’s lead. 

Armenian community leaders addressed 

the council meeting on 

Tuesday night and said Ryde’s recognition 

gives hope to 10 million Armenians 

worldwide and is an important 

step to end the war, now subject 

to a ceasefire agreement. 

“Azerbaijan continues to breach 

the ceasefire, it continues to beach 

the peace and now only independence 

will bring peace, Ryde gives us 

hope,” Armenian National Committee 

of Australia representative Haig 

Kayserian told the council meeting. 

For the Armenian Youth Federation 

of Australia, the Ryde vote is a vote 

for the Australian values of freedom 

and democracy. 

“As free Australians we should 

not celebrate our freedom wityhout

recognising the freedom of a small 

nation seeking to be free from an 

authoritarian (Azeri) regime,” Youth 

Federation spokesman Varto Zaitounian 

said. 

Gary Mazioumian noted Christian

greater Armenia since before the 

time of Christ,” he said. 

“It is a progressive, democratic 

nation which even recently built the 

nation’s first airport, but they haven’t 

used their airport because Azerbaijan 

threatens to shoot down the 

planes.” 

The motion to recognise the Republic 

of Artsakh was introduced 

by Liberal leader Clr Sarkis Yedelian 

OAM and was supported by all of 

Ryde’s political parties and the independents. 

“The massacres by Azerbaijan 

started in February 1998 but these 

massacres brought thousands upon 

thousands of people together to 

demand justice and self-determination,” 

Clr Yedelian OAM said. 

The historic City of Ryde motion 

reads: 

THAT Ryde City Council calls on 

the Commonwealth Government to 

officially recognise the independence 

of the Republic of Artsakh and 

strengthen Australia’s relationship 

with the Republic of Artsakh and its 

citizens. 

THAT Ryde City Council notes that 

2018 marks the thirtieth anniversary 

of the start of the Artsakh Liberation 

movement, which led to the 1991 

declaration of independence of the 

Republic of Artsakh. 

THAT Ryde City Council acknowledges 

the importance of the basic 

human right to self determination 

and a free and a democratic society 

and recognises the right to self-determination 

of all peoples including 

those of the Republic of Artsakh, 

THAT Ryde City Council notes the 

Republic of Artsakh’s sustained efforts 

towards creating a free and 

democratic society through the use 

of legitimate parliamentary elections 

and its continued efforts to develop 

a responsible government, 

THAT Ryde City Council supports 

and encourages the Republic of 

Artsakh’s involvement within the international 

community and further 

encourages its engagement with the 

international community to reach 

a solution to the existing regional 

problems to establish peace and 

stability and encourages peaceful relations

Socceroos defender kicked-off career as star North Ryde striker

SYDNEY FC international Alex Wilkinson is one of 

Australia’s best defenders, so fans may be surprised he 

was a goal-scoring machine in his junior days at North 

Ryde Soccer Club. 

From the age of five, 

gifted Wilkinson built a 

reputation as a sharpshooting 

striker in the 

Gladesville-Hornsby 

Football Association 

– notching a bagful of 

goals for North Ryde 

with his lethal right 

boot. 

For eight seasons the 

East Ryde schoolboy finished 

near the top of the 

goal-scoring charts, slotting 

in many a goal at the 

club’s North Ryde Oval 

and Magdala Park home 

grounds. 

“I played up front for the 

North Ryde club up until 

the age of 12 and fancied 

myself as an out and out 

striker,” Wilkinson told 

The Weekly Times. 

The following year his 

dreams were shattered 

when selectors named 

him as a defender in 

Gladesville-Hornsby’s 

junior representative 

team. 

“I really thought I had 

a future as a centre forward 

but the local soccer 

pundits knew better,” he 

laughed. 

Wilkinson would go on 

to become one of the 

country’s best central defenders 

and represent the 

Socceroos at the 2014 

FIFA World Cup in Brazil. 

“I remember my junior 

soccer days so vividly,” 

he said. 

“North Ryde officials 

identified me as a striker

it has experienced over 

the last five years is set 

to continue, says club 

president James Howard. 

He was on hand to greet 

Sydney FC’s star defender 

and former junior 

Alex Wilkinson when he 

dropped in to North Ryde 

Oval last week during 

training for the under-11 

and under-13 teams. 

“We’re proud of Alex’s 

achievement and we’re 

lucky he’s a great role 

model for kids that is 

passionate about the 

game,” Mr Howard told 

The Weekly Times. 

“We’re a communitybased 

club that caters for 

and I really enjoyed roving 

away up front in search of 

goals. 

“I could kick the ball 

hard with accuracy and 

managed to score plenty 

of goals for the team. 

“But that all changed 

when I became a teenager 

and started to make 

the junior representative 

sides.” 

Gladesville-Hornsby selectors 

anointed Wilkinson 

in the centre back 

role and the rest is history. 

Wilkinson dropped in 

to visit his old stomping 

ground last week, meeting 

some of North Ryde 

Soccer Club’s under-11 

and under-13 players, 

answering their questions 

and happily posing for 

photos with them. 

He says his approach 

to his sport only changed 

from the age of 15 or 

16 when he decided he 

wanted to pursue a career 

as a professional - “before 

then it was all about 

having fun”. 

That approach is the 

advice he has for younger 

players, who in Wilkinson 

also have a compelling 

example of the importance 

of being able to 

competently slot into any 

role. 

The prolific goal-scoring 

youngster who menaced 

opposition defences in 

his formative years would 

make a career-changing 

positional change to become 

one of Australia’s 

everyone - from the ages 

of six to 60. 

“That includes both 

players aiming for bigger 

and better things at 

representative level and 

those interested more in 

the social side of things 

and the cameraderie that 

our game offers.” 

He said the club catered 

to both boys and girls, 

men and women to ensure 

the cub continued to 

reflect its community and 

a more recent focus on 

registrations for its girls 

teams “had worked well”. 

“We’re now looking at 

extending the path-way 

for junior players by 

hopefully fielding a team 

in Gladesville Hornsby 

Football Association's 

Super League,” he said. 

Mr Howard said the 

club had experienced 

best stoppers. 

Wilkinson honed his 

skills with the Northern 

Spirit and Australian 

Youth soccer teams before 

stamping his mark 

in the A-League with the 

Central Coast Mariners, 

Melbourne City and current 

premiers Sydney FC. 

The Gladesville resident 

went on to earn 16 caps 

with the Socceroos, represent 

his country at a 

FIFA World Cup and collect 

an Asian Cup winners 

medal in 2015. 

Wilkinson didn’t make 

the cut for the Socceroos’ 

2018 World Cup campaign 

in Russia, but understands 

its a decision 

temporary Socceroos

commentator to declare 

Wilkinson’s time as a 

Socceroo has reached its 

end - in fact, an imminent 

return is on the cards. 

Earlier this year, when 

van Marwijk was finalising

assessing potential inclusions 

at a Sydney FC 

game, coach Graham Arnold 

took the opportunity 

in his post-match commentary 

to plug Wilkinson’s 

sold performance. 

“He’s solid as a rock 

all the time. He’s a top 

defender. I couldn’t be 

happier,” Arnold said of 

Wilkinson after his side’s 

four-nil hammering of 

Wellington Pheonix.

But Mr Howard, like

facilities to cater for 

demand. 

Ryde independent 

councillor Roy Maggio - 

considered by many the 

area’s unofficial Minister 

for Sport - said overdevelopment 

was adversely 

impacting the ability of 

existing facilities to cater 

to local sporting groups.

“We’re seeing an unsustainable 

increase in population 

and inadequate 

infrastructure to cater for 

that - this simply means 

we’ll see a decrease in 

service to all residents 

unless we make some 

hard decisions now,” Cr 

Maggio told The Weekly 

Times. 

“On the other hand, one 

of the rare benefits - and 

there aren’t many - is 

that great communityfocused 

sporting groups 

like North Ryde Soccer 

Club will grow and become 

more visible in the 

area. 

“It’s happening across 

the board with football 

and now with the Socceroos 

at the World Cup 

and the Matildas in the 

upcoming womens World 

Cup to inspire kids, we’ll

program had seen a drastic 

increase in numbers.

Most Australians respect and regard 

Anzac Day as special and honour 

the memory of those who served 

and paid the supreme sacrifice in 

what they believed was their duty to 

God, King and country. 

And most Aussie families have their own 

individual remembrances whether in war or 

peace, of special events or occasions. 

June 7 is such an occasion for the Booth 

family as it marks the death of Private 

Henry Booth killed-in- action at Villers- 

Bretonneux in France on June 7, 1918, one 

hundred years ago tomorrow, Thursday. 

To especially commemorate the date The 

Weekly Times editor John F Booth AM is in 

France this week to pay tribute to his Uncle 

Henry.

Tomorrow I will be visiting the grave of my 

Uncle Henry Booth in the Adelaide Cemetery to 

pay my respects to one of the uncles I never 

knew but know he was a devoted family member 

the second of eleven children to Henry and Lena 

Booth. 

Henry was born at Quandong near Grenfell in 

country New South Wales in 1897, neighbours of 

Henry Lawson family, named after his father as 

was quite common those days and was known 

as “Sonny” in the family. 

He enlisted at Showground Camp in Sydney 

October 3, 1916 following my father Arthur John 

Booth who had enlisted in Cootamundra in May 

1916 at age 16 stating his age as 18 years which 

would have made the two Booth brothers as 

twins like Arthur later had with the real life Booth 

Twins of Ryde Peter and John! 

The Booth brothers followed their brother-inlaw 

William Taylor Gibbs, aged 20, also of Grenfell 

who had enlisted in March 1916 and embarked 

on the HMAT Euripides September 9, 1916 just 

two weeks after his son William was born. 

Sadly uncle Will was not allowed to see his 

baby son or wife Bertha before departure and 

they were never to meet again as Will was killed 

in action near Ypres in Belgium October 4, 1917. 

Uncle Will’s son Bill Gibbs was brought up by 

his mother Bertha in Bondi with the help of my 

parents who sent him to University of Sydney 

and he was to serve in World War 2 as the 

meteorologist for the RAAF in Port Moresby and 

went on to become the head of the Australian 

Weather Bureau credited with revolutionising 

weather forecasting in Australia as Dr Bill Gibbs 

OBE with the use of satellites and later became 

the Director of World Meteorology in Geneva 

Switzerland. 

And as a result JB was often able to have 

in-depth discussions on claims of “man made 

climate change” and the hoax of global warming. 

Henry’s youngest brother George Alfred Booth 

was to serve in the AIF in World War 2 in Papua 

New Guinea and became a pastrycook in his big 

brother Arthur’s famous cake shop The Gum 

Leaf at Ryde and later opened up his own 

business at the then new Cox’s Road Mall North 

Ryde known as Booth’s Cakes and Pies with his 

son Alan. 

Henry embarked from Sydney on November 9, 

1916 aboard HMAT A24 Benalla as private Henry 

Booth regimental number 2683 38th Battalion, 

5th Reinforcement. 

After training in England Sonny was “taken on 

strength” in France early January 1918 and soon 

became part of the Australian forces that plugged 

the gap in the Allied lines against the Germans 

advance on the Western Front. 

Twice the Australians halted the Germans at 

Villers-Bretonneux and saved the vital centre of 

Amiens. 

However, the Australians defending Villers- 

Bretonneux were relieved by British troops on 

April 21 1918 but just three days later on April 24 

three German infantry divisions attacking with 

mustard gas and tanks broke through and 

captured the village. 

The Australians were hurriedly brought back on 

April 25 – the third anniversary of Anzac Day - 

and after fierce street fighting they drove the 

Germans out of the village never again to return. 

Unfortunately “Sonny” Booth was to be killed in 

continued fighting around Villers-Bretonneux 

and was killed in action on June 7, 1918 just a 

week after Lieutenant General Sir John Monash 

took over command from General Birdwood as 

Commander of the Australian Corps. 

Sonny is buried in Villers-Bretonneux’s Adelaide 

Cemetery Plot 1, Row A, Grave 22 and I will visit 

that tomorrow and pay my respects which I 

believe will be quite an emotional time of reunion 

and contemplation. 

I will Remember him. 

Visit to schools and 

meeting with Mayor 

Later in the day I will be meeting the Mayor 

of Villers-Bretonneux Dr Patrick Simon AO and 

passing on a Message from the Mayor of Ryde 

Clr Jerome Laxale and from Bennelong MP 

John Alexander OAM and visiting Victoria 

School in Villers-Bretonneux re-built after the 

war by donations from Victorian school 

children, and Collège Jacques Brel. 

Also a visit to the new Sir John Monash 

Centre which was officially opened on the eve 

of Anzac Day this year. 

The Villers-Bretonneux Cross 

in Ryde’s St Anne’s Church 

The original Villers-Bretonneux Cross in St Anne’s Church 

Ryde was erected on the battlefield after the Australians 

heroic victory over the Germans on Anzac Day 1918 and 

dedicated on Armistice Day 1934 at special service with 

over 500 troops present. 

The original cross was transferred to St George’s Cathedra 

in Perth in 1956 at the request of the 51st Battalion 

Association and an exact replica made for St Anne’s.


Mayor Laxale praises Eastwood cultural concert 

CITY of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale has praised Eastwood’s Chinese Senior Citizens Club for hostng a successful concert at St Philip’s Anglican Church Eastwood 

last Wednesday. Mayor Laxale said the concert showcased the talent in Eastwood’s community and enhanced the City of Ryde’s cultural diversity. 

“It was fantastic to attend this concert, which was a lot of fun,” he said.“It was also wonderful event which provided entertainment for many of our local senior citizens 

and I applaud the senior citizens club for hosting it.” The club regarly hosts cultural events for senior citizens as well as an annual forum on security and crime

Encouraging Public Street Art 

IT’S rare to find public street art in the City of Ryde. 

Even when found, it’s not 

always appreciated. 

The West Ryde Horses for 

example had their tails amputated 

after complaints 

by people who walked into 

them (it was the horses’ 

fault apparently). 

Eventually, the rest of 

their bodies were also removed 

from West Ryde 

Plaza altogether. 

So it’s pleasing to see 

Rydecouncillorsat their 

last meetingunanimouslysupporting 

a motion to 

encourage morestreet art 

in the futureto beautify the 

city. 

Street art doesn’t need to 

be costly. 

In 2014, the Eastwood 

Library unveiled a series 

of face wallmurals which 

have remained popular 

with locals to this day. 

There are many locations 

within the City where similar 

murals can be created. 

Increasing the number 

of street art locations will 

help improve civic pride 

in our City, and allow our 

young people and aspiring 

local artists to get creative. 

There’s been heavy focus 

on overdevelopment in 

Ryde in recent times. While 

new schools and transport 

infrastructure accompanying 

new developments are 

certainly critical needs, 

let’s not neglect the general 

aesthetics of a growing 

city.

Now in his 93rd year, 

Jimmy Shaw believes it is 

more important than ever to 

remember this date and the 

traditions that come with it. 

“Not only is this my birthday, 

it is the day we celebrate 

our planet and the day 

we raise awareness of how 

important it is to protect our 

planet. 

“It is a day we traditionally 

clean up our parks and our 

waterways, plant trees and 

teach children to care for the 

earth.” 

Mr Shaw hopes this year’s 

focus will be on habitat, especially 

the loss of native 

species due to a diminishing 

of their habitat to erosion 

and encroaching development. 

“Australia’s native species 

are peaceful, but vulnerable 

and Australia has now lost 

more native species than any 

other continent,” he said. 

“We forget that many native 

animals need a wide 

area to roam through to survive, 

areas with a diversity of 

plants and food, otherwise 

they perish.” 

If Jimmy Shaw had one 

birthday wish it would be 

that children learn gardening 

at school and he has devoted 

many hours of his time 

to teaching gardening at Our 

Lady Queen of Peace School 

in Gladesville. 

“It is important to teach 

gardening to teach children 

about ecology and biodiversity 

and just to teach them 

about the wonders of life,” 

he said. 

“I strongly believe that children 

should get their hands 

dirty playing in the dirt because 

soil and water gives 

us life on earth.”

Clifton agreed. 

Councillor Clifton is a 

councillor from The Greens 

and is committed to a safe 

and sustainable local environment. 

“Most people would say 

they love what nature has 

to offer and it is what makes 

Australia such a unique and 

beautiful place to live with 

our stunning beaches, harbours 

and oceans, our rivers, 

parks and bushland,” Clr 

Clifton said. 

“ But sadly the very thing 

we love as humans, we also 

threaten. 

“Plastic waste is literally 

killing our marine life and 

birds as they feed on it and 

die sadly, starving to death 

or with blocked intestines.” 

She said it is easy to think 

that someone else will take 

care of the problems that endanger 

our wildlife. 

“But that is simply not the 

case,” she said. 

“It is up to us as individuals 

to change our habits and 

patterns. 

“Don’t choose the plastic 

wrapped vegetables just 

bring a reusable bag along 

and put them in that! 

“Keep up with your recycling 

and avoid one use 

plastics. 

“Every small step we take 

does make a difference and 

as you enjoy World Environment

cricket clubs and 

councils across the state 

to apply for the 3-year 

program. 

“This fund has been 

established to inspire the 

next generation of cricketers 

by improving the 

quality and quantity of 

community facilities and 

will help attract world 

class cricket matches to 

regional NSW,” Mr Ayres 

said. 

“The NSW Government 

is leading the way 

in its support of women’s 

sport in Australia and this 

fund will also improve 

participation pathways 

for female cricketers. 

“We’re set to host 

more matches than any 

other host city for the 

ICC World Twenty20 in 

2020 which will generate 

more than $46 million in 

interstate and international 

visitor expenditure.”

DENISTONE Sports five a side midweek pennant lawn bowls team that 

recently contested the final against Dundas Sports at Brush Park Bowling

Goggin, who played the whole year but unfortunately was in hospital. 

During the nine week competition the Denistone team posted seven wins

Leading wrestlers to pit their skills 

in Mario Milano Contenders Cup 

AUSTRALIAN Wrestling Entertainment returns to Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club this Friday June 

8 for a one night only event with the cream of the nation’s talent competing for the Mario Milano 

Contenders Cup. 

It shapes as a night of honour as the great Milano is a world wide name who helped put Australian 

Wrestling Entertainment on the scene being the booker and wrestling commissioner the first 

two years from its launch in 2007. The Mario Milano Contenders Cup is an eight man tournament 

with the winner receiving a championship match plus $5000. Another highlight will be the AWE 

championship and career v career match between Vinnie Vain and Mr Exclusive. Tickets $20 adults;

Manenti, who guided 

the Woodies to three 

Shute Shield premierships, 

will shape the Australian 

Pearls’ fortunes 

leading up to the Tokyo 

Olympics in 2020.

former coach Tim Walsh as 

they steered the Pearls to 

an inaugural gold medal at 

the 2016 Olympic Games 

in Rio de Janiero. 

Manenti has been coaching 

the Australian women’s 

sevens squad since Walsh 

took over as men’s coach 

following April’s Commonwealth 

Games on the Gold 

Coast. 

The former prop also assisted 

Walsh as the Pearls 

claimed a silver medal after 

a heart-breaking loss 

to New Zealand in the 

Commonwealth Games 

decider. 

Australia holds a slender 

four point lead over 

New Zealand ahead of 

this week’s series finale in 

Paris, with a grand final appearance 

enough for them 

to reclaim the World Series 

title. 

Manenti is working hard 

on improving the contact 

areas for the Olympic 

women’s champions and 

should add plenty of steel 

to this exciting and skilful 

squad. 

As an Eastwood coach 

over the past eight seasons, 

Manenti guided the 

first grade squad to four 

Shute Shield Grand Final 

appearances and three 

premierships - a tremendous 

feat. 

During his tenure with the 

Woodies he has strengthened 

the club’s culture and 

ensured that the blue and 

whites’ future is bright. 

Manenti would have been 

proud of the Woodies’ efforts 

last Saturday when 

they toppled competition 

leaders Sydney University 

32-29 at T.G Millner Field.

Moses Mbye signs deal with Tigers 

WESTS Tigers have 

secured the services 

of dynamic Canterbury 

Bulldogs utility Moses 

Mbye on a four year 

deal. 

Twenty four year old 

Mbye, who was called 

into the Queensland Origin 

camp last week to 

shadow the side as the 

Maroons’ 18th man, is a 

key signing for the joint 

venture club who are rebuilding 

strongly under 

coach Ivan Cleary. 

He is expected to slot 

in at fullback with the Tigers 

and also challenge 

whiz kid Kalyn Ponga 

and veteran Darius Boyd 

for the Queensland number 

one jumper in 2019. 

The versatile Mbye, 

who has chalked up 92 

NRL games since making 

his debut in 2014, 

has proved an attacking 

weapon for the embattled 

Bulldogs and his 

departure will ease the 

club’s salary cap woes. 

Mbye’s new agreement 

will see him join Wests 

Tigers next season and 

be a part of the club until 

at least the end of 2022. 

With the elusive Mbye 

now on the club’s 

books,. the Tigers will 

have a surfeit of backline 

talent to choose from. 

The Noosa Pirates junior
