A TRILOGY 

Jessica Backhaus desenvolve o seu trabalho a 

partir de um gosto óbvio pela experimentação 

visual.A artista, que trabalha em fotografia, 

inspira-se na simplicidade das coisas quotidianas 

e na banalidade dos cenários e do silêncio. 

Nestas escondem-se, ocultos, encontros 

aparentemente aleatórios com uma realidade 

delicada e poética. Também as imperfeições e a 

transitoriedade das coisas escondem uma beleza 

contemplativa e subtil. São espaços permeados 

de luz que apresentam ainda vidas imbuídas de 

uma estética purista e dinâmica. Estes trabalhos 

são profundos estudos emocionais captando 

vários momentos e cenários compostos por 

Backhaus mostrados com lirismo e apurada 

intuição. 

Esta nova trilogia da artista reúne três séries de 

aproximadamente 40 obras cada. Um simples fio 

de algodão, apresentado em cores vivas, 

percorre toda a trilogia. A primeira série, “Beyond 

Blue”, é dedicada completamente a este fio 

colorido que é encenado em fundos 

contrastantes. O espectador sente-se compelido 

a permanecer nesta radical simplificação ao 

mesmo tempo que tenta desvendar o 

emaranhamento, apresentado aparentemente de 

forma não espetacular, com a aura de 

contemplação resultante. Será que é possível 

determinar o vazio? Jessica Backhaus consegue 

fazê-lo. Aqui, o vazio é encenado com tanta 

como um presente que não está vinculado a uma 

habilidade que o espectador pode experimentálo 

como um presente que não está vinculado a 

um passado ou um futuro. Logo, o vazio é uma 

zona intermediária imensurável na qual uma 

condição anterior assume um estado novo e 

desconhecido de ser. 

Em “Shifting Clouds”, Backhaus apropria-se, 

documentando, de uma transição ou seja de uma 

realidade que permanece entre as coisas. Esta 

segunda série mostra fragmentos e visões que 

estão prestes a eclodir e, por isso, ainda presos no 

limbo: imagens reflectidas, superfícies 

taticamente apelativas, formas que são metáforas 

imaginativas e de tom otimista ou sensações 

intensamente coloridas. A artista foca-se em 

motores de pensamento, memórias, associações e 

padrões que nos levam a imaginar um novo 

começo, renunciando a todo o adquirido. 

Na terceira série, “New Horizon”, a artista mostra 

impressões poéticas, fluentes e persuasivas. As 

composições cativam, com a sua variedade, como 

se fossem quebra-cabeças. Backhaus desenvolve 

novos caminhos na fotografia, incorporando 

suportes mistos, como pintura e colagem, que 

expandem e aprofundam estas abstrações. A 

ordem, a harmonia, as inconsistências estilísticas e 

as preocupações da artista são postas em relação 

de forma divertida, discreta e com um cuidado 

minucioso. A artista faz associações que evocam 

memórias, sentimentos e cenas imaginárias.

A TRILOGY 

Jessica Backhaus embarks on her work with an 

obvious relish in visual experimentation. The photo 

artist draws inspiration from the simplicity of everyday 

things, from unassuming scenes and silence. Therein 

lurk hidden, apparently random encounters with a 

delicate, poetic reality. Imperfections, but also the 

transience of things, conceal a contemplative and 

subtle beauty. Light-suffused spaces present still lifes 

imbued with a purist, dynamic aesthetic. The 

photographs are profound emotional studies 

capturing various moments. Backhaus composes her 

scenarios with lyricism and keen intuition. 

The artist’s new trilogy brings together three series of 

approximately 40 works each. A literal thread, in 

bright colors, runs through the entire trilogy. The first 

series, Beyond Blue, is devoted completely to this 

thread. Colorful strands are staged against colored 

backgrounds. The viewer feels compelled to linger in 

this radical reduction, trying to unravel the 

entanglement of the seemingly unspectacular with 

the resulting aura of contemplation. Is it possible to 

pin down emptiness? Jessica Backhaus manages to 

do so. Here, the void is staged so skillfully that the 

viewer can experience it as a blessed present, 

unencumbered by past or future. The void is an 

immeasurable intermediate zone in former condition 

segues into a new and unknown state of being.

In Shifting Clouds, Backhaus considers and 

documents this very transition – a reality that lies in 

between things. The second series shows fragments 

and visions that are poised on the verge of becoming, 

caught in limbo: reflections, haptically appealing 

surfaces, shapes imaginatively metamorphosing, 

upbeat tones, intensely colored sensations. The artist 

deals here with trains of thought, memories, 

associations, and patterns that move us to venture a 

new beginning, relinquishing everything safe and 

secure. 

In the third series, New Horizon, the artist presents 

free-flowing and persuasive poetic impressions. The 

compositions captivate with their variety and puzzlelike 

elements. Backhaus is breaking new ground in 

photography, incorporating components of mixed 

media, painting, and collage that expand and deepen 

these abstractions. Order, harmony, and stylistic 

inconsistencies and irritations are interwoven playfully 

and yet discreetly, with painstaking care. The artist 

conjoins associations that evoke memories, feelings, 

and imagined scenes.

“Jessica Backhaus analisa através da sua 

série fotográfica Six Degrees of Freedom, 

questões universais da existência humana. 

Com base na sua própria história de vida e 

tomando bem presente a importância de 

conhecer as raízes de sua própria 

existência, a artista questiona em que 

medida é possível re-elaborar as nossas 

raízes obtidas à partida. De início de uma 

forma inconsciente, mas depois cada vez 

mais de um modo mais propositado, a 

fotógrafa, que cresceu numa família de 

artistas,num determinado momento da sua 

vida parte em busca das suas próprias 

raízes. Nesta viagem a artista visita os locais 

de infância e juventude, preenchendo 

lacunas nas suas memórias. Com estes 

trabalhos, ela capta simbolicamente a 

essência tanto desta pesquisa como das 

fases de vida por que passou . O 

espectador recebe as imagens abertas, 

directas e destituídas de equilíbrio. As 

fotografias possuem potencial metafórico 

em contraposição à fotografia documental 

tradicional, alternando o realismo com a 

abstração.”

"Jessica Backhaus examines, with her latest 

photographic series Six Degrees of Freedom, 

universal questions of human existence. Based 

on her own life story she inquires after the 

significance of knowing the roots of one's own 

existence and to what extent it is possible to reelaborate 

these – usually prescribed– roots. 

Initially unconsciously, then ever more 

purposefully the photographer, who grew up 

in a family of artists, at some point in her life set 

off in search of her own background. On this 

journey she visits places of her childhood and 

youth and fills the gaps in her memories. With 

her photographs she symbolically captures the 

essence of this search and of her life stages. 

Simultaneously, she pulls off the balancing act 

of keeping the images open for the beholder. 

Her photographs possess metaphoric potential 

and work against the grain of a classic social 

documentary photography. They alternate 

between realism and abstraction.”

Jessica Backhaus (ALE, EUA) nasceu em 

Cuxhaven, na Alemanha em 1970 e 

cresceu numa família artística. Aos 

dezasseis anos mudou-se para Paris onde 

estudou fotografia e comunicação visual. 

Aqui conheceu Gisèle Freund em 1992, 

que se tornou seu mentor. Em 1995, sua 

paixão pela fotografia atraiu-a para Nova 

York onde trabalhou como assistente de 

alguns fotógrafos, tendo prosseguido 

posteriormente seus próprios projetos 

até 2009, ano em que saiu da cidade. 

Jessica Backhaus é considerada uma das 

vozes mais proeminentes da fotografia 

contemporânea alemã de hoje. O seu 

trabalho foi mostrado em inúmeras 

exposições individuais e coletivas, 

incluindo as da National Portrait Gallery, 

Londres, da Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlim e 

da Kunsthalle Erfurt. Até à data, a artista 

conta com oito publicações sobre o seu 

trabalho: Jesus and the Cherries, 2005, 

What Still Remains, 2008, One Day in 

November, 2008, I Wanted to See the 

World, 2010, ONE DAY- 10 

photographers, 2010, Once, still and 

forever, 2012, Six degrees of freedom, 

2015 and A TRILOGY, 2017, todas 

publicadas pela Kehrer Verlag, 

Heidelberg / Berlim. O seu trabalho está 

apresentado no livro: Women 

Photographers de Boris Friedewald 

(Prestel Verlag 2014).

Jessica Backhaus was born in 

Cuxhaven, Germany in 1970 and 

grew up in an artistic family. At the 

age of sixteen, she moved to Paris, 

where she later studied 

photography and visual 

communications. Here she met 

Gisele Freund in 1992, who became 

her mentor. In 1995 her passion for 

photography drew her to New York, 

where she assisted photographers, 

pursued her own projects and lived 

until 2009. 

Jessica Backhaus is regarded as one 

of the most distinguished voices in 

contemporary photography in 

Germany today. Her work has been 

shown in numerous solo and group 

exhibitions, including the National 

Portrait Gallery, London, and the 

Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin. To date, 

seven publications to her name;

November, 2008, I Wanted to See 

the World, 2010, ONE DAY- 10 

photographers, 2010, Once, still and
