MMS EIGHTH GRADERS VISIT ISLAND FARM
HYDE COUNTY SCHOOLS
On November 30th, Ms. Sandy Carawan’s eighth graders visited the
Island Farm in Manteo, The visit was in preparation for an integrated
assignment. The Island farm is a living history site that recreates life
on the Etheridge family farm as it would have occurred on historic
Roanoke Island in the mid-nineteenth century. The students learned
about how the Etheridge family and their slaves worked together to
make a living out of farming, fishing, and fowling.
Among other activities that would have occurred in the house, the
students also learned through visual demonstrations as well as
hands-on demonstrations from the cook and the blacksmith about
the overall daily on the farm.
The mission of Island Farm is to inspire curiosity about the diverse
history of mid-19th century Roanoke Island by creating authentic,
tangible, and meaningful visitor experiences with the farm’s buildings,
landscapes, stories and animals.
Early in the 2010 - 2011 school year, Ms.
Victoria Fox, a friend of Mrs. Chestnutt's
from Pitt Town Australia mailed the Mattamuskeet
Elementary 4th graders a package
from Australia. The package contained: a
cookbook of Australian recipes, a boomerang,
two stuffed toy animals (a kangaroo
and a koala bear), a key chain and pen set and some vegemite for the 4th
grade classes to sample.
Vegemite is an Australian food paste made from yeast extract. It is eaten
on toast, crackers, bread, and crumpets. Vegemite is also used as a filling
for pastries. Our two 4th grade classes tried the vegemite on buttered
toast. Some students really liked the vegemite and asked for extra pieces.
However, many did not like the taste, which they described as salty or as
tasting like burnt cheese toast. Mrs. Chestnutt sampled the vegemite with
her class, and of course we made sure Mrs. Gill had a chance to taste some
too. Even Mr. Coleman tried the Australian vitamin based spread! Most
MES staff and faculty members tried the vegemite, and some pretty silly
expressions were seen on some faces in our hallway that day.
Page 4
We would like to thank Ms. Fox for sending all of the goodies to the
4th graders. We had lots of fun, and really had a cultural experience
learning about vegemite. Although Australia celebrates
Christmas during our summer, Ms. Fox is from
the United States. She does celebrate our traditional
Christmas season in Australia.
“STUDENTS DISCOVER ANOTHER USE FOR PINTO BEANS BESIDES GOOD EATING”
The 4th grade math students are working on perimeter
and area. The students used pinto beans
to figure out the area of Harvey Farrow's hand.
All students in both Mrs. Chestnutt's and Mrs.
Gill's homeroom drew their hands and figured the perimeter
by tracing their hand and lining it with beans.
Next, they counted the beans used to fill up the lines of
their hands. The area was determined by filling up the
inside of the hand with beans, and then counting the
beans.
Definitions
The perimeter of a shape is the total length of its boundary. Perimeter
is measured in units of length. Length is a one-dimensional measure;
common to all measurements of length is that they tell how far something
stretches.
The area of a shape is how much surface it takes up. It is measured in
two dimensions and in square units.
Shapes with the same length perimeter can have different areas.
Shapes with the same area can have different length perimeter.
ALL ABOARD - THE POLAR EXPRESS
On Friday morning Mr. Julio Morales, Conductor
welcomed the Elementary students, teachers and
parents aboard the “Polar Express” for a ride to
the North Pole.
Students boarded the train with some wearing
their pajamas, carrying blankets, a favorite teddy
bear and a pillow. After being greeted by Mr. Cole-
man everyone made themselves comfortable on
the floor and Mr. Morales began the movie.
Recipe For A Tasty Treat To Eat
Mrs. Gill’s Fourth Graders are always learning new and
fun things in class. The week before Christmas break can
be challenging for both students and teachers. Students'
minds are busy thinking about Santa, presents, and vacation.
Teachers are busy thinking about VACATION - a
much needed one. With that in mind, teachers have to
be extra creative to design lessons to keep students busy
but engaged.
Students in Mrs. Gill's Language Arts class had a funfilled
learning experience with reading a recipe. Each
child made a sugar cone Christmas tree after reading a
recipe and using their reading strategies. They have been
busy in class with monitoring comprehension, attacking
new vocabulary, making connections, and visualizing
READ! READ! READ!
MES READING EXPRESS TRAIN
On Wednesday evening, December 15th the Engelhard
Christmas Parade brought excitement and Christmas light
through the Engelhard main street.
One of the float entries was the Mattamuskeet Reading Ex-
press Bus. The bus was beautifully decorated like a train
and driven by Mr. Julio Morales accompanied by Multi-
Cultural club members and 35 MES students. The students
riding the bus earned the privilege through the Road to
Learning Program that has been going on aboard the school
bus. This program has allowed students to improve their
reading habits by placing books on each bus so that the stu-
dents can read on their bus ride to and from school.
The students wore their pajamas and held a book out of the
window to greet the crowd standing along the parade route
as the bus-train made it’s way through town.
text. This became very important when reading the recipe
and actually making the treat. EVERYONE was engaged,
especially when eating the Christmas tree took
place. Some students even wanted to go home over the
holidays and make another one for their family and
friends.
HOLIDAY HEALTH TIPS - from “EASY KIDS RECIPES”
Healthy Holiday Tips
Christmas can be a joyful and exciting time, but it can
also be a stressful time for parents. One of the causes
of high stress during the holiday season is watching
your weight.
Holiday Eating Strategies
With a high percentage of both adults and children now
considered overweight, Christmas parties and holiday
festivities can be a real challenge. Christmas can become
a cake, candy, and cookie fest causing many parents
and children to put on extra pounds.
The sugary foods served at Christmas parties are filled
with artificial flavors and colors that can actually cause
some behavioral problems such as hyperactivity for kids
who over-do it.
What can we as parents do to make sure that we,
and our kids, have a happy and healthy holiday
time?
1) When you're baking cookies and other sweets this
Christmas, use about half of the recommended sugar.
Most recipes call for more than enough sugar to satisfy
any sweet tooth. You can even make sugar free cookies
replacing sugar with applesauce or a sugar substitute.
2) Try to use natural foods to give color to your dishes
instead of artificial colors and flavors. Cherries and
other fruits and nuts can be used to decorate sweets
instead of red hots and other candies.
FLOY’S RECIPE CORNER
Famous Pumpkin Cookies - (Bake for 15 minutes)
Ingredients: 1/2 cup shortening - 1 cup sugar - 2 tsp cinnamon
1 cup pumpkin puree - 1/2 tsp nutmeg - 1 egg - 1/2 tsp ginger
2 cups self -rising flour - 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped nuts - Directions: Preheat oven to 350F. Sift flour
with spices, in a separate bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Add
pumpkin and egg to creamed mixture. Slowly beat in flour mixture, and
fold in chocolate chips. Drop by teaspoonfuls on greased cookie sheet.
3) Resist the temptation to eat only sweets and potato
chips at parties. Encourage your children to eat fresh
fruits and vegetables. You can usually seek out party
trays with fresh fruits and vegetables and creamy, light
dips.
4) Stay away from overly rich and saucy foods. Those
foods that leave a "lump" in your stomach usually
aren't good for you. If your body is trying to tell you
something, then listen to it!
5) Don't be fanatical. Remember that you are eating
"bonus food" when you go to parties. Eat in moderation
and enjoy the delicious foods that make Christmas such
a warm and wonderful time of the year.
Remember to relax, spend time with loved ones, have a
healthy holiday, and enjoy this special season!
(Clarissa Camus is the founder of
Easy Kids Recipes)
**Added tip:
For further safety precautions, when putting
up Christmas lights at home for the holidays,
make sure that ALL electrical cords are in
good condition. NEVER run cords under carpet,
and avoid overloading sockets with many plugs;
this can start a fire.
Healthy Eating in the Community - insights
from
Alliance For A Healthier Generation
Whether they are overweight or not, children in the U.S. are often
overfed, but still undernourished.
Take serious note of the following points of interest:
Portion sizes are growing and kids are eating more than they
need, which means they are getting extra calories. Adolescents
today are eating on average 8% more than they were less than
thirty years ago.
Children consume nearly 20 percent of their total daily calories
from nutrient-empty, high-calorie foods, while fewer than 2
percent meet the USDA recommendations for the five food
groups.
The average teen eats fast food twice a week. Over a 15 year
study, adults who ate fast food more than twice a week gained 10
pounds more than those who ate fast food less than once a week.
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation supports more than 9,000
schools and the lives of more than five million students through
it’s Healthy Schools Program.
“O’ CHRISTMAS TREE, O’ CHRISTMAS TREE”
“Did you know?.............................”
Did you know?..........................:
Christians commemorate Christmas in celebration of the birth of JESUS. According
to popular tradition, the birth of Jesus took place in a stable, surrounded
by farm animals. The stable might actually have been a cave used for
the purpose of stabling animals. According to the Bible, Jesus was born to
Mary, assisted by her husband Joseph, in the city of Bethlehem.
Christians celebrate Christmas in many different ways, such as attendance of
church services; children perform plays retelling the events leading up to and
surrounding the birth of Christ; the singing of carols in reference to the
event; displays of different scenes of the nativity, among others.
Although Christmas is widely thought of as a Christian holiday, it is celebrated
by many non-Christians as well. Both are known to celebrate in some
of the same ways such as the large celebratory family meal; gift giving and
church services. However, many non-Christians throw secular parties that include
hanging of garlands and mistletoe; holding to the tradition of some
mythological figures known as Santa Claus and Father Christmas whom they
associate with bringing gifts to children during the Christmas season.
In whatever way one chooses to celebrate the Christmas holidays, for most it
is usually a fun family and friends get together time, and for those of the
Christian faith, a joyous remembrance of our Savior Jesus Christ’s birth.
According to Christian lore, the Christmas
tree is associated with St. Boniface
and the German town of Geismar. Sometime
in St. Boniface’s lifetime he cut
down the tree of Thor in order to disprove
the legitimacy of the Norse gods to
the local German tribe. St. Boniface saw
a fir tree growing in the roots of an old
oak. Taking this as a sign of the Christian
faith, he said, “…..let Christ be at
the center of your households…..”, using
the fir tree as a symbol of Christianity.
