Five Most Important Things to Consider When
Choosing a College
What Type of Degree is Right for You?
Probably the most important factor to considering when deciding on a college is what degree
you want to strive for. This should be the first thing you decide, before you ever begin the
search for a college.
You can change your mind as the
process rolls along (maybe something
seems more appealing or you hone
your choice down to something less
broad), but you need to have some idea
of what you are looking for, or else you
may dedicate time to colleges that do
not have great programs in what you
want.
What Type of Degree is Right for You?
Besides that, there will be colleges
out there that are well-respected
for certain programs. I would be on
the lookout for those colleges that
are the bets for the degree you
want. No matter what you choose,
the chances are you are going to
get a good education. But, honing
your search to find the best
possible education is for the best.
Where Would You Like to Learn?
There’s the question of location that you have to consider as well. I am not talking about
what college you are looking for. I am more talking about what type of location would be
an ideal learning environment for you. Do you want to learn in a sunny place? A rainy
place? Do you care if there is a lot of snow? Do you want to go to college close to home
or far away? Is studying abroad appealing to you? These are all questions to consider
along your college search.
Find The Best College
You can find the best college in the world, but if it is in a place that may dampen
your spirits, you are not going to be as open to the learning that is provided to you.
This journey is all about finding what you are the most comfortable with, and
location has a lot to do with that.
Do You Have Any Interest in Starting at a Community
College?
Before committing tens of thousands of
dollars to a four-year university, I would
suggest you consider community
college as an option, especially if you
are strapped for cash. Community
colleges serve as a buffer period in your
collegiate studies, where you can knock
out all of your general education
courses over a two-year period, while
you deeply consider what you want your
major and minor to be at a university
down the road.
Also, if we are being
realistic, college is not for
everyone. Community
college gives you a low risk
chance to determine
whether pursuing
education post-high school
is the right choice for you.
Its Your Choice ?
What Colleges Can You Afford?
Now we get to the most
heartbreaking of the things to
consider: what is your budget?
Obviously, you aren’t going to
have a wad of cash to pay
upfront for your education, but
you must consider what is the
amount of money that you could
feasibly afford once college
comes to a conclusion.
What Colleges Can You Afford?
This is an important step, as college loans have sunk more than a couple of graduates.
But, a high price tag shouldn’t dissuade you from pursing a school. Each school has a
specific set of scholarships that can help abate your anxiety. Your high school also
provides a list of local scholarships, and if you place in the top ten of your high school
class, you can get great discounts to in-state universities.
What Types of Opportunities Set Each College Apart?
Each school you look into will provide a baseline quality education. You are going to
run into few schools that are deficient in that respect. What sets these schools apart is
what they offer outside of the schooling itself.
Each school will provide specific
opportunities (whether that’s trips,
employment opportunities, fairs, Q&As,
etc. you have to find out for yourself) Or
you can become tutor and tech online.
You should weigh these in your
decision, as the quality of you time in
college can be decided by these extracurricular
opportunities.
