Glenview’s Rolfes hits the
streets with first album

With New Orleans in
her past, Chicago in her
present and the Grammys,
hopefully, in her
future, Glenview singersongwriter
Cat Rolfes has
come out with her first
full-length record.
Rolfes, a southern roots
rock singer originally
from New Orleans, released
her original debut
album, “HWY 55,” earlier
this year.
“I grew up in New Orleans
and music is so essential
to that city,” she
said. “Only a few cities
have a certain musical
identity and you can’t say,
‘New York music,’ or you
can’t say, ‘LA music,’ but
you can say, ‘New Orleans
music.’”
Still, Rolfes throws a
little Chicago-style seasoning
into her music.
“New Orleans gave me
a nice base,” she said.
“But then coming to Chicago,
where it’s also a
wonderful culture for music,
I heard a lot of blues
and folk music. That sort
of influenced my style, as
well. So I feel like this album
is sort of a mixture of
all that I’ve experienced.”
“HWY 55” consists of
10 songs all written and
sang by Rolfes that range
from up-beat to slow.
She wrote several of the
songs about family members.
Track one, “Mamma
Said,” is a tribute to her
mother while track seven,
“Outta Time,” is a song
Rolfes wrote for her two
children that gives them
advice on life.

she met at the Old Town
School of Funk Music for
helping her through the
process of making her album.
“Having that wonderful
supportive community
of musicians helped me
so much in this process,”
Rolfes said. “So I would
write a song and I’d say,
‘Hey, check this out, listen
to it,’ and I’d play it
to them and certain people
would give me honest
feedback and I learned
to start trusting them. So
[that] community of musicians
has been indispensable
to me.”
Looking toward the future,
Rolfes is willing to
work with others but has a
bigger goal in mind.
“I’d love to collaborate
with another songwriter,
but finding someone to
work with is not always
easy and it’s not something
I would probably
seek out,” she said. “I
think if it was meant to be,
we’ll find each other. But,
ultimately, making good
music is my top priority.
You have to be playing
something you really love
and that you really care
about.”
Even further in the
future, though, Rolfes
dreams of getting one of
those gold record players
for her music.
“My dream has always
been to move people with
my music,” Rolfes said.
“If I’m fortunate enough
to win a Grammy or something
like that, that would
be great, but just having
people listen to the music
and enjoy it is a great gift
in and of itself.”
