Teacher Assistant <strong>Training</strong><br />
To be employed as a teacher assistant in <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Island</strong>, the following<br />
criteria must be met:<br />

Have a high school diploma OR a GED® Credential<br />

Must have completed a RIDE Teacher Assistant <strong>Training</strong> Program approved<br />
by the <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Island</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Education (RIDE)<br />
Exception to this qualification is if you have certification as a teacher assistant (TA) in<br />
another state or hold an associate degree or bachelor’s degree and have completed<br />
coursework or other training that covers the knowledge and skills needed for entry-level<br />
instructional TAs as articulated in RIDE TA Standards. The law does not specify the degree<br />
has to be in education or a related field, but training needs to have covered the standards<br />
regarding TA knowledge and skills.<br />

Must meet one <strong>of</strong> the following three requirements:<br />
• Completed at least two years <strong>of</strong> study at an institution <strong>of</strong> higher education.<br />
• Obtained an associate or higher degree.<br />
• Successfully completed the ParaPro Assessment (reading, writing and mathematics).<br />

Teacher Assistant <strong>Training</strong> Program<br />
This program provides training consistent with state standards for anyone interested in being<br />
employed as a full-time, part-time or substitute teacher assistant. Instruction is provided by a<br />
multidisciplinary team. Topics to be addressed include: roles and responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the teacher<br />
assistant; human development; diversity; special education; basic rights; school health and safety; the<br />
instructional process; school laws; computer and technology skills; positive classroom climate; and<br />
team-building.<br />
A certificate recognized by RIDE is awarded upon successful completion <strong>of</strong> all classes, assignments,<br />
job shadowing and the final exam. Participants must successfully complete a reading, language and<br />
mathematics assessment at the first class session.<br />
$270 (includes pre-test, registration fee and training manual)<br />
Although this is a noncredit training program, one credit is transferable to CCRI’s Human<br />
Services programs.<br />
