What is
Nithraid?
The Nithraid River Festival is coming into its 6th year and has been highly successful with
total audience numbers reaching around 12,000 so far. Centred around an exciting ten mile
sailing race from the Solway Firth over the full navigable length of the River Nith and finishing
right in the heart of Dumfries at the Mill Green, Nithraid is a defining expression of Dumfries’
character and culture. Now in its fifth successful year, Nithraid is becoming a much
anticipated event in the sailing calendar, attracting a growing number of entries from outside
the area, and a solid local following.
The festivities begin with the Salty Cow’s procession (Nithraid’s
emblem) through the town to the main event site, where at the end
of the race it is committed to the river as a celebratory spectacle.
Around Mill Green there is an environmentally friendly craft
making village and other family activities connecting the themes
surrounding Nithraid. Last year saw a Viking village, music, food
and entertainment for everyone.
