A SUPERMARKET creep who hounded a police chief’s wife for two-and-a-half years has pled
guilty to causing her fear or alarm.
James Lewis, 56, became obsessed with Hazel Blair, a keen amateur singer who worked in
Sainsbury’s and reminded him of “Something” singer Shirley Bassey.
Lewis knew Hazel’s husband Sandy was a chief inspector, but didn’t care.
He left a CD on her windscreen of a love song he had sung for her, entered her in a talent
contest without telling her and gave her unwanted gifts.
Lewis also repeatedly pestered Hazel by turning up at her work, phoning her at work, waiting
for her outside, shouting at her and sending her messages from a fake Facebook account
he set up.
Hazel told a court she became “a wee bit more wary” of Lewis’s visits to the shop in Giffnock,
near Glasgow.
She added: “He always found a reason to speak to me. I was a wee bit annoyed he phoned
me at work.”
Hazel Blair was hounded by James Lewis
Lewis, who has diabetes and walks with a stick, began hounding Hazel at the shop early in
2012 after she helped him get a loaf of bread from a high shelf.
He told her he would become her favourite customer and asked if she was married.
Hazel replied that she was “very married” and her husband was a policeman. But Lewis then
asked if she would have gone out with him if she was single.
Hazel Blair with her police officer husband Sandy
Hazel, 47, made a joke of it, saying she didn’t know how to answer because it was so long
since a man had asked her out.
Lewis didn’t take the hint. In the summer of 2012, after hearing Hazel singing as she worked,
he told her he was a songwriter and she kindly offered to listen to some of his songs.
A few days later, he left a CD on her car windscreen. She put it in her car player and heard
two strange tracks of Lewis speaking over background music.
Lewis then phoned Hazel at work and asked if she liked his music. He told her he was
disappointed that he hadn’t heard from her.
Lewis also started a conversation with Hazel about James Bond. She recalled: “He told me he
As well as phoning Hazel about the CD, Lewis went to the Sainsbury’s to ask her about it.
She 12° replied that it wasn’t what she had expected and he looked “taken aback, hurt”.
Hazel recalled: “He told me he had written a ballad and he’d let me hear that.
“A CD was put on my windscreen. It was definitely a song this time. I think it was called What
is Love? or something like that.”
Police were called after Lewis’s attentions became too much for Hazel and he was arrested in
June 2014. She gave evidence against him at Paisley Sheriff Court before he pled guilty to a
reduced charge.
Lewis admitted leaving Hazel distressed. He was bailed to await sentence next month.
