MESSAGE TO THE HERD
Looks like another Sacramento summer is here. Vacations, trips to the mountains and to the cooler coastal
beaches and runs along the river, what better times are there. For some of us it’s track and field season. By the
time you read this message the PA-USATF track championship is San Mateo will have come and gone along with
the Sierra Gold T & F festival in Grass Valley. And hopefully I will have participated in both in preparation for the
Nationals in Spokane in late July and the Worlds in Malaga, Spain in the Steeplechase.
Speaking of track, a number of Chips took to the new all-weather track at CK McClatchy HS and trained and ran
monthly time trials in the Summer track series. The time trials were age-graded and posted on our website. This
was a refreshing opportunity for veteran track runners to push themselves right alongside some Chips that have
never run track. Beside getting some speed work and increased fitness, this track series will have readied many
for the fall cross country season.
The 4th of July 5 Miler tradition continues to flourish. Again race director and prominent Chip George Parrott
was able to secure financial support from the community. Councilman Jeff Harris, Nissan of Sacramento, SacFit,
SRA, and the Rebels all contributed to help secure the continuation of this well-loved run through River Park at
no cost for the runners. We expect 1000 plus again this year.
Starting in August, the Chip CIM training program will kick off. This program will be designed to appeal to a wide
range of runners and should bring some new members to the club. Also in August, the 40+ year running of Susan
B. Anthony Women’s 5k will be held August 11th. As summer winds down, the Buffalo Stampede 10 Miler is on
the schedule for September 9th. The Stampede has a brand new course this year starting and finishing at the
Scottish Rite temple, and we have added a 4 miler to spice things up.
The fall cross country season begins in August with training to coincide with the
marathon program. Our cross country teams are always looking for new members.
If you have never tried cross county, here is your chance to do so.
There is a lot going on in the club and lots of opportunities to participate.
Running, volunteering, making new friends and sharing experiences — this is what
the Chips are all about. Right now we have a few job openings/volunteer
opportunities. 1. Buffalo Chip archivist, 2. New member mentor at Tuesday night
workout, 3. Help with the club tent at local races. If you can help in any of these
area, please let me know.
Go Chips!
