<strong>JFS</strong> offers counseling to individuals and<br />

families (including children), and mental health programs<br />

including individual counseling, workshops, psychiatric<br />

assessments, medication management, psychological testing<br />

services and a free drop-in center for adults living with mental<br />

illness and/or developmental disabilities (The Welcome Home<br />

Program).<br />

DAVID<br />

When David walked into our offices for an initial assessment, his<br />

fragile emotional state was both complicated and textbook. At 55,<br />

he had lost his mother, for whom he had cared in her final months.<br />

He’d also lost a brother, felt estranged and harshly judged by his<br />

sister, and had never been close with his father. Timid and softspoken,<br />

he spent most days alone with his cat. He is also gay, which<br />

made him feel even more misunderstood and isolated. But David<br />

had a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He had worked as a medical<br />

coder. David initially had come to <strong>JFS</strong> for help finding a career<br />

path, but we recognized his counseling needs. After six months<br />

of therapy, he has developed life-changing skills in assertiveness,<br />

communication, acceptance, mindfulness, and self-compassion.<br />

Today, he attends a weekly LGBTQ support group facilitated by<br />

<strong>JFS</strong>. He also has twice-a-week therapy sessions and has worked<br />

very successfully to recognize the power of his persistence. David’s<br />

counselor says he is one of her most treasured cases. “It has been,”<br />

she says. “a joyful journey.”<br />
