New Trier District 203 School Board
Campus security updates
likely for 2018-19 year
Daniel I. Dorfman
Freelance Reporter
New Trier High School
officials are continuing
to review security procedures
with some changes
planned for this summer
and additional enhancements
likely coming later
this year.
At the board’s meeting
on Monday, June 11,
board members received
a presentation from Director
of Student Life Athena
Arvanitis, who detailed recent
actions taken by staff
with the goal of improving
security at both campuses.
The District took a look at
procedures following the
Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory
Stoneman Douglas High
School in Parkland, Fla.
Arvanitis said the school
recently hired two security
consultants, asking them
to provide an analysis of
the safety situation. Since
then, there have been a
series of training sessions
with staff and students.
Over the summer, the
school plans to upgrade its
video monitoring system,
install additional shatterproof
film throughout the
District, place window
shades in selected locations
and hire four new
evening security guards
She added there would
also be an installation of
secure vestibules with
double buzzers at the Winnetka
campus.
Other upgrades are
being discussed for the
Northfield campus, including
new check-in
procedures and additional
perimeter security. However,
those may not occur
“We have made big progress
in the last three to six months,
but it would be helpful to have
it connected to an overarching
plan.”
Greg Robitaille — New Trier School Board
president on hoping to see a new formal campus
security plan this year
until the start of the 2018-
19 school year to allow
for planning, according to
school officials.
Furthermore, Arvanitis
said staff conducted two
lockdown drills following
the Florida shooting. One
was at both locations and
the second just in Winnetka.
“We received positive
feedback from law enforcement
and everyone
on our staff who helped us
observe and collect data
from that (drill),” she said.
Moreover, the New Trier
Student Alliance hosted
a student forum, reviewing
security practices and
answering questions about
existing procedures.
“That was a really nice
cap to work students for a
year on some of the changes
we have made and getting
feedback from them
and how things were going
on a daily basis as they
went through our building,”
Arvanitis said.
The data from all aspects
of the security review will
used to identify specific
areas of focus for security
planning and facility improvements
in the future,
Arvanitis noted.
School Board President
Greg Robitaille said he
would like to see a formal
plan presented either
in closed or open session
down the road.
“All of this is wonderful
and it is hard not to support
it, but it just feels like a series
of tactics and it needs
to be connected to an overall
strategy for security
management on our campuses,”
he said. “We have
made big progress in the
last three to six months,
but it would be helpful to
have it connected to an
overarching plan.”
Superintendent Paul
Sally said that formal plan
could be delivered either
in August or September.
Board member Patrick
O’Donoghue noted the
specific of enhanced security
measures would be
reached by the board.
“We will make the final
decision in this go-round
in terms of what is enough,
so you don’t have to worry
about that part of the responsibility,”
O’Donoghue
said. “We will decide as a
board how far we will go
with this program.”
Annual Children’s
Fair a hit despite
wet weather
Alexa Burnell
Freelance Reporter
When Lizzie Kelley,
co-chair of the Winnetka
Community Nursery
School Children’s Fair,
awoke on the morning of
June 8 only to see gloomy
skies and hear rumbles of
thunder, she immediately
wondered if Mother Nature
was going to literally
rain on her parade.
But, much to her delight,
regardless of a short
burst of downpours, the
crowds came, the music
played and a 73-year tradition
carried on, putting
a smile on the faces of
the hundreds of families
who enjoyed this year’s
games, rides, foods and
fun.
“This fair is a longstanding
tradition that the
entire community enjoys,
so I am so glad that the
weather wasn’t as bad as
we originally thought,”
Kelley said. “This event
has a special place in my
heart. I went to Greeley
School and have attended
since I was a kid, as has
my co-chair, Emily Rose.
It is very special for us to
be here with our own kids,
watching all these families
having such an amazing
time.”
As Kelley looked over
the scene, kids poured
onto the Winnetka Village
Green. Toddlers and preschoolers
enjoyed activities
like the candy castle,
bounce houses, face painting
and go fish.
Emerson Beck, 5, of Winnetka, rides Jaeger the camel.
manned their own booth
for the second year in a
row, encouraging youngsters
to play with naturebased
items like sand
and logs, while showing
slightly older youngsters
how to make art on an old
record player.
“This fair is a great way
for us to talk to families
about play-based school
Kate Hagenah, of Winnetka, dances with her sons Theo,
3, and Ben, 6, as her husband, Chris, leads his band
Chino Palamino in song.
and show kids just how
fun simple materials can
be,” said co-director Holly
Bressler. “We are offering
sensory experimentation
with a variety of different
materials, reminding
all just how educational
simple play can be.”
Older children enjoyed
the games and various opportunities
to win prizes,
such as emoji pillows,
wacky pens, growing dinosaurs
and mood rings.
“I really like all the
games and prizes that I
have won,” said 9-yearold
Kate Swain, of Wilmette.
“There is so much
to do here; I’m having
so much fun with my
friends.”
Preteens and teens set
off on their own, hitting
the swings, strawberry
twirl, giant slides and a
new climbing wall, all the
while filling up on some
American favorites like
hot dogs, cotton candy
and snow cones.
As the evening sun
began to set, local dad
band, Chino Palomino,
played classic rock tunes,
as Coldwell Banker, the
event’s food sponsor,
worked alongside food
and beverage organizer
and Winnetka Community
Nursery School parent,
Kristen Bilton.
“We recently moved
here from the city and I
am enjoying my first year,
watching all these families
enjoy such a wonderful
tradition together,”
Bilton said. “There is
nothing better than watching
kids run across the
Village Green, kicking off
the summer and enjoying
games, rides, music, food
and more. I can see why
this event has carried on
for 73 years. It’s magical.”

In Memoriam
Former township supervisor remembered for big heart
Neil Milbert
Freelance Reporter
Paddie Brennen was
a multi-talented woman
whose passion was sharing
her gifts with her fellow
human beings in all walks
of life.
“What a special person
she was,” said Jeanne
Rosser, social service administrator
for New Trier
Township. “I will always
be grateful to have known
her personally and professionally.
She loved her
work, her family and her
community.”
Her community outreach
extended from the affluent
North Shore to the impoverished
areas of Chicago.
“Paddie’s generosity of
spirit led her to graciously
offer support, encouragement
or a listening ear to
anyone in need,” New Trier
Supervisor Alan Goldberg
said. “She was a vocal
champion of resources for
those living on the margins.
Paddie worked passionately
on programs that assisted
youth, senior citizens
and community members
facing developmental challenges.”
Sentiments similar to
those expressed by the social
service administrator
and the supervisor have
been repeated time and
again following the passing
of the former New Trier
Township supervisor and
trustee at age 76 on May
26 at Evanston Hospital.
Brennen
July 21, at Christ Church
Winnetka.
The daughter of Charless
and Harriet Hahn was born
on Oct. 4, 1941. She graduated
from New Trier High
School in 1959, received
her undergraduate degree
from Beloit College in
1963 and received her master
of arts degree in Latin
American studies from Tulane
University in 1967.
As a young woman, she
taught briefly in Spain.
“She also got involved
in computer technology
when she was in college,”
said her former high school
classmate and longtime
friend, New Trier Township
Assessor Jan Churchwell.
“She became an expert in
computers when most of
us knew hardly anything
about them.”
In 1970, she married
Theodore “Ted” Brennen.
The couple lived in Philadelphia,
Albion, N.Y. and
Altadena, Calif. before
moving back to the North
Shore and settling in Winnetka.
“They were living in
Philadelphia and met
through a friend,” said the
couple’s son, Phillip. “I
think they went on one date
and my dad told her they
were going to get married.”
Following Ted’s death
in 1993, the widow moved
back to Wilmette, where
she had grown up.
“Paddie and I met in
high school, where we
shared a love of signing,”
Churchwell said. “At the
time of our 25th reunion,
we reconnected and became
friends. In the years
since, we shared not only
our enjoyment for classical
music but countless bridge
hands, meals, stories about
our families and laughs.
Her generous spirit, her big
heart, her warm smile —
all these things were the essential
Paddie.”
Brennen was a longtime
active member of Christ
Church Winnetka. She
sang in the church choir for
nearly 50 years and served
as a member of the church’s
Benevolence Committee,
Her involvement in benevolence
dated back to her
high-school days at New
Trier, when she worked at
the church as a youth group
volunteer.
Brennen also volunteered
for many social service
agencies, one of which was
St. Leonard’s Ministries on
Chicago’s Near West Side.
She was a board member
of the ministry, which provides
housing and support
services for formerly incarcerated
individuals returning
to the community from
Illinois prisons.
While Brennen was revered
for her commitment
to public service, she also
made her mark in the public
sector.
She worked for 15 years
as an information technology
consultant for Analysts
International Corp., and
also consulted for Honeywell,
ATT and McDonald’s.
In 2009, Brennen was
elected a New Trier Township
trustee. After four
years, she became a New
Trier Township supervisor
in 2013 and served until
2017.
“As the social services
administrator, I worked
with Paddie to administer
all the social services
programs that had to be
reviewed and approved by
the township supervisor,”
said Jeanne Rosser, the
Township’s social services
administrator. “She always
approached situations with
a collaborative spirit and a
focus on how best to meet
residents’ needs. She was
always thinking about how
our existing programs were
meeting needs and the potential
development of programs
that could be utilized
in needs that weren’t being
met.
“She was a wonderful
woman, a real blessing and
one of the best bosses I ever
had. I learned a tremendous
amount from her.”
“Her dedication and enthusiasm
for New Trier
Township was clearly evident
throughout her many
years of service,” Goldberg
added. “Paddie can best
be described as a warm,
caring individual known
for selflessness in both her
professional and personal
lives. Anyone who had the
good fortune to know her
was graced immediately by
her effervescent smile and
outgoing persona.”
“I knew her for the 30
years I’ve lived in Winnetka
and she and I crossed
paths so many times over
the years,” Winnetka Village
Council member
Penny Lanphier said. “She
was a very compassionate
and caring person, one of
those stalwarts who always
turned out.”
“When you hear people
talk about Paddie, they
may talk about her work
for Christ Church or her
many years on the board of
St. Leonard’s House or her
years furthering the work
of New Trier Township but
beyond all she did for the
organizations and people
she cared about she was a
devoted mother and grandmother,”
Churchwell added.
“Her son, his wife and
their four children live in
Cary. Paddie thought nothing
of working a full week,
attending a meeting or two
in the evenings and then
heading way out to Cary
on weekends to watch her
grandchildren engaged in
sports or cheerleading.”
Brennen is survived by
her mother, Harriet Hahn;
son, Phillip; daughter-inlaw,
Lisa; and four grandchildren.

“She started grabbing
Wilmette Rocks!
offers NT area teens
chance to be stars
Alexa Burnell
Freelance Reporter
Any New Trier teen
who has ever thought of
becoming a rock star can
make their dreams come
true this summer, thanks
to Wilmette Rocks!, a new
program offered by the
Wilmette Park District,
giving budding bands
the chance to play at the
Wallace Bowl in Gillson
Park.
Spearheaded by Alison
Dornheggen, theater artistic
director, there will be
two opportunities — June
21 and Aug. 7 — where
bands featuring teens aged
between 14-22, can apply
to perform in front of all
their family and friends,
gaining local fame and
valuable experience during
this once-in-a lifetime
opportunity.
“Playing out in front
of a crowd, particularly
in a venue as nice as the
Wallace Bowl, is a unique
opportunity that will help
teen musicians learn and
grow,” Dornheggen said.
“Along with having the
chance to play live in front
of family and friends,
musicians will also learn
stage etiquette, like prepping
the stage for the band
that follows. Plus, with
our hopes to draw kids
from all over the New
Trier Township, teens will
meet other teens with similar
interests, giving them
a chance to collaborate on
future musical endeavors.
Besides all that, young
artists propel the music
industry; you never know
where an opportunity like
this one can lead.”
Along with providing
teen performers the
chance to be seen and
heard, Dornheggen said
this endeavor also fulfills
the Park District’s mission
to provide engaging
opportunities for all ages.
“One of our goals at the
Park District is to provide
enriching activities for the
entire community,” Dornheggen
said. “Musical opportunities
like this one,
where families and friends
can gather to watch young
artists perform, is a great
way to spend a summer
evening, enjoying the
beautiful surroundings
with one another.”
So, how does one get
involved?
The process includes
emailing the park district
at marketing@wilpark.
org to request an application.
Any style of music
is sought, an adult must
be present at the time of
the performance, and performers
are requested to
provide a fully refundable
security deposit of $100.
Dornheggen said she
hopes that Wilmette
Rocks! will merely be a
first step in bringing youth
musicians out into the public
eye.
“These kinds of opportunities
don’t come along
every day. Any adult who
has been in the music industry
knows just how
hard it can be to get in front
of a crowd. ‘What could be
better than stepping into
the Wallace Bowl, having
your music heard by
all your friends?’” Dornheggen
said. “This is the
chance to be a real rock
star, right here in Wilmette.”
Winnetka journalist
awarded 2018 Telly Award
SUBMITTED BY AUDLANK MEDIA
Winnetka resident Julie Peterson,
of Audlank Media, recently was
awarded a Silver Telly statuette for
producing the two-part web series
“My Garbage Man, Ron.”
The Telly Awards, established in
1979, is the premier award organization
honoring video and television
across all screens. Categories include
social video, online series, television
shows and branded content.
More than 12,000 entries from
all 50 states and five continents are
judged by a council comprised of
industry experts, including major
networks, advertising agencies and
production companies.
“It is exciting to see how perfectly
this year’s winners capture the
innovation and energy of the rapidly
changing video and television
industry that we rebuilt the Telly
Awards to recognize,” said Telly
Awards managing director Sabrina
Dridje, who was tapped last year to
lead the revitalization of the awards.
“They are an exciting culmination
to an ambitious year-long effort that
has re-established The Telly Awards
as a trusted benchmark for the industry.”
Besides Audlank Media, other
winners include ESPN, National
Geographic, HBO and Viacom Velocity.
Peterson is an Emmy award-winning
producer and former television
news reporter who founded nonprofit
corporation Audlank Media in 2017.
She said her online video stories aim
to “educate, inspire and inform opinions”
around issues and people she
thinks people need to know more
about.
Peterson’s first Garbage Man video
profiled Winnetka village refuse
employee Ron Turner and spawned a
GoFundMe campaign that is sending
Turner to Germany. The groundswell
prompted Peterson to produce a second
video about the Germany vacation
gift.
“Ron Turner’s long track record
Julie Peterson, a Winnetka resident who is an Emmy award-winning
producer and former TV news reporter, recently won a Telly Award for
her two-part web series about a Winnetka village refuse worker and a
GoFundMe campaign, which sent him to Germany. PHOTO SUBMITTED
of dedicated work and also volunteer
community service, in the face
of tough circumstances, makes Ron
an excellent role model for all of us,”
Peterson said. “He’s a slam dunk of a
story subject. This award belongs to
Ron as much as to Audlank Media.
“To the Telly Awards judging
council — a heartfelt thank you for
this vote of confidence,” Peterson
said. “This prestigious honor further
cements my conviction that all
of us are eager for candid stories
that inform us as citizens. Everyday
people, with everyday problems and
optimistic attitudes, inspire my reporting.”
Award winners will be
recognized both at the
event and also in 22nd
Century Media publications.
“This event is just a
great opportunity to...
highlight some of those
working women who may
not always be highlighted
or recognized,” Warthen
said. “[Looking at] some
of the nominations that
we’ve seen come through
so far, there are a lot of
great stories, there are a
lot of great women out in
the North Shore area, and
for us, it’s a great opportunity...
to recognize those
women [in our community
newspapers].”
The function of this
luncheon is not only to
present awards; the event
is also a networking session.
“Making connections,
for people, is a wonderful
thing,” Warthen said.
The event will feature
culture transformation
expert Jeanne Malnati as
a speaker. Malnati is the
CEO and founder of The
Culture Group, a company
which teaches communication
and leadership
principles. She is also a
licensed psychotherapist
and expert in workplace
wellness.
While 22nd Century
Media hosts similar
awards events throughout
the year, including ones
which target seniors or
recognize businesses as
a whole, this event arose
because the company felt
accentuating women’s accomplishments
is also important.
“This is a great networking
opportunity to
meet some of the movers
and shakers of the north
shore,” Warthen said. “[It
is a] positive event for
women to attend, and we
are really looking forward
to it.”
SUBMITTED BY THE WINNETKA
PUBLIC SCHOOLS DISTRICT 36
A passionate conservationist,
global adventurer,
and avid surfer, Winnetka
Public Schools alumnus
Jerry Toth (Carleton Washburne
Class of 1992) is
making a meaningful difference
in the world.
After graduating from
Cornell University with a
bachelor’s in economics,
Toth worked on Wall Street
but decided to pursue other
challenges. He channeled
his interest in environmentalism
into co-founding
a nonprofit organization
called Third Millennium
Alliance, which established
the Jama-Coaque
Reserve in 2007 in order
to protect 1,400 acres of
rainforest and cloud forest
in coastal Ecuador.
Toth serves as director
of the organization, which
has planted more than
15,000 trees and continues
to make an impact protecting
the Pacific Ecuadorian
Forest and empowering local
communities to restore
deforested land.
“I had always been
smitten by forests,” he
said. “I was living in Ecuador
and I could see the
forests were disappearing,
and I wanted to do something
about it. It wasn’t
just me. It was a group of
us, and we did it.”
Toth is also using his dynamic
entrepreneurial and
leadership skills as chief
strategy officer for To’ak
Chocolate, a company he
founded in order to partner
with local farmers, conservationists
and multiple
universities to protect the
world’s oldest and rarest
variety of cacao and nurse
it back from the brink of
extinction.
Toth attended Crow Island
School and fondly
recalls Pioneer Day, a
teacher who “made school
feel like an adventure,”
and remembers “creativity
was given free reign” in art
class.
“When I arrived in college,
I felt much more
prepared than most of the
other students,” Toth said.
“The Winnetka Public
Schools had trained me
well. Most people in the
world don’t have the benefit
of starting off with such
a strong foundation.”
Reflecting on his unconventional
career path, Toth
said, “The idea of saving
the whole world seemed
too daunting a task, so instead
I focused on saving
one very special little part
of it. It’s a dream job.”
Sadly, this week’s
obituary on
Paddie Brennen, a longtime
volunteer and former New
From Page 8
tion, Frum added, after
meetings with the village
attorney, staff and the
Cook County’s Sheriff’s
Office, is that the Sheriff’s
Office “will take primary
responsibility for enforcement
of the ordinance
within Northbrook” and
the Cook County State’s
Attorney will be responsible
for prosecution of any
violations of the County’s
Blair Holt Act.
“The Cook County
Sheriff’s staff have offered
to meet with the Northbrook
Police Department
to develop protocols for
our police to use to notify
the sheriff if we determine
THE GLENCOE ANCHOR
Trier Township trustee
and supervisor.
Aside from being
remembered as a passionate
North Shore resident,
the quotes from the story
that are resonating the
most with me are the ones
about her generous spirit,
passionate approaches,
selflessness, grace, and big
heart (let alone big smile).
In my time working
here, I have noticed historical
dates, annual events
and last names from covering
everything under the
Winnetka and Northfield
sun for the paper. When I
first began working here,
Brennen was the Township
supervisor, and so I
had seen her name, photo
and information attached
to emails about Township
happenings.
So, when I heard the
news a few weeks back
about Brennen’s passing, I
was sad to hear that someone
who’s notes came
through my inbox had
died. When it’s someone
whose job and work you
are familiar with from
election and government
reporting, it resonates.
But aside from being a
passionate local leader for
a variety of causes, I think
what is most important is
the fact that Brennen is
Glencoe Sidewalk Sale
The Glencoe Chamber
of Commerce kicks off
North Shore’s sidewalk
sale season with its annual
event from June 29-30.
“Our goal is to be the
first of the season,” said
Sally Sprowl, the chamber’s
executive director.
“People know to look for
our sale by the end of June
each year. Our goal is to
attract vendors and not
compete with other towns
that also have sidewalk
sales. We don’t want to be
on the same weekend as
other North Shore towns,
so we carved out this opportunity
to be the first.”
Glencoe’s sale will run
9 a.m.-5 p.m. both days on
Park and Vernon avenues
in downtown Glencoe.
The sidewalk sale features
the village’s own retail
businesses and additional
outside vendors.
In total, Sprowl estimated
there would be about
40 different vendors selling
reduced-price clothing,
jewelry, artwork, household
items, decor and more.
“We do have some organizations
and businesses
that bring brochures and
information to also hand
out,” she added.
The weekend sale will
attract an estimated “hundreds
upon hundreds” of
shoppers to downtown
Glencoe.
“The downtown area of
Glencoe to start with is
very attractive,” Sprowl
said. “It’s very accessible
and once you park, you
can go everywhere. We’ll
line those two streets (Park
and Vernon) that crisscross
each other so it’s
very easy for people to
maneuver around and see
the whole sale.
“You’ll be easily be able
to park, shop, get lunch, a
snack or coffee.”
Second annual Winnetka
Music Festival wows thousands
Sixteen-year-old Glenbrook North High School student
Carly Meyer gave an operatic performance at the
Winnetka Community House. She was recently named
best actress by Broadway in Chicago at an Illinois
musical theater awards competition.
Despite an intense heatwave,
more than 16,000
people flooded the streets
of downtown Winnetka as
music filled the air at the
Winnetka Music Festival
Friday-Saturday, June 15-
16.
The free, boutique festival
featured 40 of the
nation’s top emerging musicians,
representing 28
touring bands which performed
on five stages.
Winnetka’s Val Haller,
popularly known for her
Valslist music program,
organized the festival,
collaborating with the
Village of Winnetka,
the Winnetka-Northfield
Chamber of Commerce
and the Winnetka Park
District.
From sets from local
musicians to bands which
have performed at national
festivals from coast to
coast, the Winnetka Music
Festival had it all —
an eclectic blend of rock,
pop, country, electronic
dance and throwback
sounds.
A Thousand Horses,
which has opened for Jason
Aldean and Kid Rock,
performed their contemporary
country mix on
Friday night. And, this
year’s big Saturday performance
was ZZ Ward,
a “fedora-rocking, guitar
shredding” woman who
has shared the stage with
performers from Kendrick
Lamar to Eric Clapton,
been featured on “The Tonight
Show” and “Jimmy
Kimmel Live” and performed
at Coachella and
Bonnaroo.
Performer James Lanman,
from the San Francisco
Bay area, performed
his “neo soul” sounds for
a Saturday evening set.
He said his style is rooted
in Motown.
“I write my own songs;
70 percent are original
and the others are a redo
like a classic,” said Lanman,
who sings and plays
the acoustic guitar.
Lanman is so serious
about his music, he sold
everything he owned and
put the money into buying
a van so he could tour the
U.S. and Canada.
“Val Haller saw me perform
in Michigan and told
me about this festival,” he
said. “She is the patron
saint of emerging musicians.”
The Winnetka Park
District kick-started their
children’s summer music
series, Wednesdays in the
Woods, with The North
Shore Music Institute’s
Rachel Thomas, who had
little ones tapping their
toes in between nibbles of
lunch and bright sunshine
at Hubbard Woods Park on
June 13.
Superintendent of Recreation
John Shea greeted
guests, happy to see the
sun had arrived in Winnetka
just in time to get the
summer tunes going for
the preschool and toddler
crowd.
“We have a great, captive
audience here today, and
this is one of the many ways
we at the Park District provide
family-friendly events
throughout the summer
and all year long,” Shea
said. “We have a nice relationship
with [The North
Shore Music Institute] as
they teach classes through
the Park District. Children
really enjoy seeing their
teacher out in the community,
spreading the music,
while we continue to support
this partnership.”
As Thomas sang and
played piano, little ones
danced around, many in
swimsuits, taking a break
from the splash pad to get
lost in Thomas’ imaginative
lyrics. At many points
during the performance,
Thomas jumped in the mix,
dancing with children and
handing them shakers, tambourines
and other musical
instruments, befriending
even the shyest of children.
Rachel Thomas, a children’s musician from The
North Shore Music Institute, demonstrates simple
instruments to local children June 13 at Hubbard
Woods Park as a part of the Winnetka Park District’s
children’s summer music series, Wednesdays in the
Woods. PHOTOS BY ALEXA BURNELL/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
A crowd of children dance and sing along to Thomas’
music.
Francine Conway,
of Wilmette, attended
with her 4-year-old son,
Frankie, loving the chance
to enjoy the great outdoors
while listening to music.
“Frankie just loves music,
so any chance we
have to attend a concert
outdoors on a lovely day
is one we will certainly
take,” she said. “I really
like how interactive the
instructor is; the venue is
a wonderful spot to hold a
children’s concert.”
As the concert progressed,
it didn’t take long
for parents and caregivers
to begin dancing with their
children, happy to get lost
in imagination, or sing
classic children’s songs.
Agnes Whitear, of Winnetka,
attended with her
children, Ada and William,
snuggling them on her lap
and taking their pictures
while they danced along to
Thomas’ fun songs.
The North Shore Music
Institute will provide children’s
entertainment again
on July 11. Children’s concerts
begin at 11 a.m., and
picnicking and swimsuits
are encouraged. For a full
concerts, visit winpark.
Clucker’s Chicken idea hatched in Mexico
Michael Wojtychiw
Sports Editor
Every restaurateur has
his or her own inspiration.
For Reed Merdinger,
founder of Clucker’s Charcoal
Chicken, it was a trip
to Mexico.
“In Mexico City, I saw
this concept that was unbelievable,”
said Merdinger,
a New Trier graduate
and resident of Highland
Park. “It was a restaurant
with chickens on these
open grills with charcoal.
There’s a guy standing behind
there with a cleaver,
standing behind the grill
and just cutting them up,
into a line where people
could get them.
“I came back to Chicago,
I was then working for
Don Roth, and said to Don
Roth, ‘I got an idea to open
up a chicken restaurant.’
He said, ‘I’m 80 years
old and I’m not looking
to open a new restaurant.’
So, my wife and I went
around, I found the equipment,
and in 1985, we
opened the first Clucker’s
on Clark Street.”
After opening in Chicago
and operating for
nearly 13 years, the couple
became tired of managing
their own day-to-day
business and Merdinger
went to work for Levy
Restaurants, running all of
the company’s restaurants
throughout the country.
After 13 years of working
with Levy, he suffered
an injury that left him paralyzed
in a wheelchair. According
to Merdinger, in
1998, he went to sleep one
night and woke up paralyzed.
He decided to work
on his health and moved
to Florida to work at The
Miami Project, a hospital
that focuses on spinal cord
research. He came back in
a walker.
The half Clucker ($10.29) comes with rotisserie chicken and a choice of sides at
Clucker’s Charcoal Chicken. Photos by Kelly Page/22nd Century Media
The chicken enchiladas ($10.99) are stuffed with rotisserie chicken and topped with
cheese, avocado and salsa verde.
Fast forward five years,
Merdinger made this return
to the restaurant
business. He looked for a
space, and in 2008, Clucker’s
in Highwood opened.
“It was amazing how
many people remembered
Clucker’s from when it
originally opened,” he
said.
An amazing fact about
the menu is it’s essentially
the same as it was when
the restaurant originally
opened in 1985. And, all
of the food is made from
scratch.
“There’s a Jewish and
Mexican flavor here,” the
owner said. “The Jewish
influence is partly in the
chicken noodle soup. The
brick chicken has a bit of
the Mexican flavor to it,
with a little bit of lemon
to it. Our enchiladas are
that way, our tacos are that
way, our salsas are that
way.
“I picked the food I
liked to eat.”
When 22nd Century
Media editors visited the
restaurant, across the street
from Fort Sheridan, they
were treated to large portions
of many of the more
popular items on the menu.
We started with the 2350
salad ($10.99), named after
the original restaurant’s
address on Clark Street in
Chicago.
The 2350 salad, one of
Clucker’s mild chicken wings (10 for $8.79) come with
celery and homemade ranch dressing.
the numerous gluten-free
menu options, featured
grilled chicken, bacon,
tomato, chopped egg,
avocado, scallions, Swiss
cheese, mixed greens and
the restaurant’s famous
sweet poppy seed dressing.
One of the more popular
dishes is the wings.
According to Merdinger,
on Super Bowl Sunday,
Clucker’s sold more than
7,500.
We received 10 wings
($8.79) dipped in mild
sauce and served with
celery sticks and homemade
ranch dressing.
Wings are also sold in
orders of 20 ($16.99), 30
($24.99), 50 ($39.99) and
100 ($79.799). Additional
sauces include barbecue,
plain, hot or The Coop’s
on Fire sauce.
A third item we had was
the Cajun crispy chicken
sandwich ($9.99), one of
the few, if not the, fried
items on the menu. The
sandwich is a pan-fried
Cajun chicken breast
with remoulade sauce and
topped with your choice of
cheese.
The sandwich offered
a perfect blend of cheese
and chicken, with neither
item overpowering the
other. We also had the
fries as our side. The fries
were crispy, but not overdone.
The chicken enchiladas
($10.99) ended up being
one of our favorite dishes.
Packed with flavor, the
dish had three corn tortillas
stuffed with rotisserie
chicken, topped with
cheese, avocado and salsa
verde. The dish is also
served with red beans and
rice.
Last, we had the half
Clucker rotisserie chicken
($10.29) with potatoes
and corn bread. The bird
is marinated in a vibrant
blend of natural fruit juices
and zesty herbs, then slowly
cooked to golden-brown
perfection over live charcoal
fire. All birds come
with coleslaw, tortillas,
Bathe Your Bird sauce and
a side. Along with the half
Clucker, a quarter Clucker
and half brick are also
available.
The restaurant, currently
located at 760 Sheridan
Road in Highwood,
will be relocating to 405
Sheridan Road sometime
in July.

Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Charlotte Melgard
The recent New Trier
graduate will row at the
University of North Carolina
in the fall
Do you have any
superstitions before,
during or after a race?
Before every race, I’m
always the first seat, so before
every race I make sure
to grab or shake the girl’s
hand that’s behind me.
What’s one thing
people don’t know
about you?
My entire family is lefthanded.
What’s one thing on
your bucket list?
I really wanna go to
New Zealand. My dad
played rugby there and I’d
like to go see it.
What’s the best part
about being a New
Trier athlete?
The community of people.
The amount of friends
and support, it’s amazing.
I’ve made so many friends.
What’s the best advice
you’ve gotten?
Treat others the way
you want to be treated. My
mom always says that.
If you could play
another sport, what
would it be and why?
Rugby. No girls really
play, but my dad played
that growing up and it
looks like so much fun.
What’s been your
favorite moment at
New Trier?
This year, the graduation
party. Being with
all my friends, my whole
grade.
If you could have one
super power, what
would it be and why?
Being invisible.
What is the hardest
part about your sport?
The work outs. Rowing
is pretty much conditioning
all year. It’s hard to
stick with it, especially
since you don’t get to practice
outside until April. It’s
hard to stay motivated, but
when you get out in the
water, it’s a lot of fun.
Do you have a
favorite superhero?
Wonder Woman.
Interview by Sports Editor
Michael Wojtychiw
dan
From Page 46
for us,’” he said. “They
know we won last year,
they know we went to the
Elite Eight, they know
who we are. And, so we
kind of just changed that
mindset that, ‘Oh, hey,
we’re not the underdogs,
sometimes. How do we
approach these matches
now that we’re supposed
to win in our mind?’”
In 2019, the Stars return
12 players from this year’s
roster and will be looking
to end the Springfield College
dynasty. Springfield
has played in all seven of
the NCAA Division III
national title games, winning
five, including the
last two.
But to not only knock
off the Pride, but also stay
toward the top of Division-III
teams, will be no
easy task. That is something
the young coach
fully realizes.
“Every year there’s going
to be more and more
competition and more
and more programs,” the
coach said. “So, yeah, going
into that this summer,
this is going to be my No.
1 goal, is to figure out, alright
how do we progress
from this. ‘Cause we lost
four tremendous seniors
from this team.
“I have to get these guys
to understand the return
is like, ‘OK, hey, this is
great what we did, but it’s
not just going to happen
again next year, because
it happened once.’ And I
think trying to get them
to understand a little bit
and then getting the freshman
that are coming in
onboard is going to be just
a really fun task for us.
But I gotta kind of impress
on them how important
it is for them to physically
and mentally be
prepared to take that next
step.”
Whether that next step
is a national championship,
however, will be
something everyone will
be watching for.
Local youth takes part in flag football tournament
SUBMITTED BY NORTHSHORE
TREVIANS YOUTH FOOTBALL
Hundreds of students,
parents and family members
gathered for an enjoyable
day of youth football
as the St. Francis Xavier
and Crow Island Elementary
Schools walked away
as champions of the first
annual Northshore Trevians
Youth Flag Football
Tournament, held on June
3 at the Skokie Playfields
in Winnetka.
Ten schools and more
than 100 students participated
across two grade
divisions during the oneday
tournament, which
provided local elementary
schools the opportunity
to compete against each
other to claim the title of
best flag football team on
the North Shore.
The second-grade division
was hotly contested
with three schools — St.
Francis, Wilmette’s McKenzie
Elementary and
Glenview’s Avoca Elementary
— all finishing
round-robin play with an
identical 2-1 record. St.
Francis won the tiebreaker
against the other two
schools by giving up the
fewest average points allowed.
In the third-grade division,
Crow Island (3-
0) defeated Northfield’s
Middlefork Primary
School (2-1) 16-6 to win
the championship game
and take home the winner’s
trophy.
The flag tournament
was organized by the
Northshore Trevians
Youth Football Organization,
which provides
a competitive fall tackle
football program for players
from second through
eighth grade, and a new
fall flag program that will
serve participants in kindergarten
through sixth
“This tournament gives
our community the opportunity
to get together
and enjoy watching our
kids play a sport that they
really love,” said Stacy
Fitzgerald, president of
Northshore Trevians. “We
were delighted to welcome
hundreds of players
and parents to the event
today. The games were
competitive, and the kids
had a great time. We hope
to see many of these players
participating in our
fall programs, and we are
already looking forward
to hosting this tournament
again next year.”
Loyola grad leads Dominican to volleyball Final Four
Michael Wojtychiw
Sports Editor
For many years, East
Coast schools dominated
NCAA Division III men’s
volleyball.
In fact, of this year’s 97
D-III teams, 77 are on the
East Coast.
That may be about to
change, however, and
it’s all thanks to a Loyola
Academy graduate. Dan
Pawlikowski, a 1996
Loyola graduate, recently
finished his first season
as head coach of the Dominican
University men’s
volleyball team, leading
the squad to its best finish
in the program’s fiveyear
history — the Stars
made it to the Final Four
of the NCAA Tournament,
dropping a five-set heartbreaker
in the semifinals
to Stevens Institute.
“Making it this far
shows that, one, there’s a
lot of great talent here in
Illinois, in the Midwest,
and it shows that a lot of
hard work was put into
getting this thing going in
the right direction,” Pawlikowski
said.
Dominican made it to
the Elite Eight last season,
so Pawlikowski knew he
stepped into a situation
where he would have a talented
team with the potential
of making a deep run
into the playoffs.
“I knew we had a really
good team and a lot of the
guys had the goal of trying
to win the national championship,”
he said. “So
I knew that their minds
were in the correct spot.
I knew we would have a
good program, but you
never know. I mean, we
lost an All-American from
the year before, so replacing
that is always a critical
component coupled with
a new head coach and
you know, the transition.
It very easily could have
not worked out as well but
it ended up that the guys
really kept working at it
all year long and we just
kept getting better each
week, so it turned out to
be kind of a great surprise
for us.”
While the head coaching
opportunity was Pawlikowski’s
first chance to
run his own program, he’s
been around the college
and high-school game for
a long time. He got his
start at Loyola University
in 2004, working on
the men’s staff for three
years, and stops at North
Park University, Northern
Illinois University and
University of Wisconsin-
Madison followed. His
most recent coaching stint
was on his wife’s staff at
Stony Brook University,
where he was an assistant
women’s volleyball coach
and later associate head
coach from 2013-2016.
The Evanston native
took what he learned from
all of his previous stops to
help him be successful at
the helm of the Dominican
program. Even with that,
however, he knew that he
didn’t want to change too
much of what had worked
at Dominican, especially
since the Stars made it to
the Elite Eight in only its
fourth year of existence.
“I don’t know if it was a
change in what I was doing
per se to what the previous
staff was doing, but
them learning, ‘OK, well
now teams are gunning
TEAMS OF THE SPRING
1. NSCDS girls soccer
(above). Raiders
made school
history this season
by finishing second
overall in the state
tournament. The
team, which had
never made it
past the sectional
semifinal, lost
to Quincy Notre
Dame in the final.
2. New Trier boys
volleyball. The
Trevians won
their fifth straight
sectional title and
brought home their
second trophy
in three years,
finishing fourth
overall.
3. Loyola Academy
softball. Loyola
had some firsts
for coach Michelle
Farrell-Fink. The
squad won 20
games for the first
time since it won
the state title in
2009 and also
made it to the
regional final for
the first time since
2013.
Michael Wojtychiw
Sports Editor
The 2017-2018
school year was a
great one for our
local schools. Loyola
Academy, New Trier,
North Shore Country Day
School and Regina Dominican
all had successful
sports years. We saw state
championships, school
records being set, teams
pulling major upsets and
even some heartbreak.
I know that as a sports
editor, I had a great time
covering these events and
I can only imagine what it
was like for those directly
involved to be feeling. At
the end of every calendar
year, we go through the
top 10 stories of the year.
This editorial isn’t that. It’s
about recognizing some
highlights throughout the
entire school year.
• North Shore Country
Day wins first state title in
a girls sport. The Raiders
had a great tennis team all
season, but I don’t know if
even they saw themselves
winning the state title. It
was a mixture of great
young talent, good coaching
and the belief that they
could go as far as they did.
After finishing three points
away from a sectional title,
the Raiders qualified two
entries into the singles
bracket and one into the
doubles. The team’s top
singles player, freshman
Claudia Miller, took third
at the tournament, while
the other entries went
deep into the consolation
bracket. What’s great
for this team is it returns
Miller and the statequalifying
doubles team of
Alex Arenson and Caroline
Lommer next season.
• North Shore Country
Day field hockey’s secondplace
finish. The fall was
a great season for Raider
athletics, as not only did
the tennis team do great
things, the field hockey
team also achieved a couple
firsts. Midway through
the season, NSCDS beat
New Trier for the first
time, in any team sport,
when its field hockey team
beat the Trevians 1-0 on
a Friday afternoon. The
Raiders then followed that
up with a run to the state
title game, where they’d
unfortunately lose to Lake
Forest, but still achieve the
highest finish in program
history.
• New Trier girls volleyball
falls one game
short of state. The Trevians
girls volleyball team, led
by a host of junior starters,
had its most successful
season since 2013 when it
took third in the state. The
Trevians took care of their
sectional before dropping
its super-sectional match
to Crystal Lake Central,
who would finish third in
the state. New Trier returns
almost its entire lineup, so
it wouldn’t be shocking to
see it make another deep
run.
• Loyola football plays
for state title again. The
Ramblers bounced back
from an opening-week
loss to play in their third
consecutive state final and
fourth in five years. The
team would lose a close
contest to Lincoln-Way
East, but the fact it made
it to the title game with
such consistency is really
starting to become unparalleled.
Loyola, like many of
the previously mentioned
schools, brings back a
good number of returnees.
• New Trier boys basketball
completes miraculous
comeback. Down more
than 20 points in the fourth
quarter of its sectional
semifinal game, the team
came back to beat Niles
North in overtime, sending
it to the sectional final
against Evanston. The Trevians
fell to the Wildkits,
who would finish third in
state, in the title game, but
the comeback will be one
remembered by many at
North Shore Country Day School tennis players (left
to right) Gabbie Kaplinsky, Alex Arenson, Cara Savin,
Claudia Miller and Edith Edwards-Mizel hold the trophy
after winning the IHSA Class 1A state title Oct. 21 in
Buffalo Grove. Michael Wojtychiw/22nd Century Media
the school.
• Loyola boys hockey
wins state title. Loyola
Gold won its first state title
since 1996 by defeating
Stevenson 4-2 at the United
Center. The win marked
the most successful season
Gold has had in a while,
giving the squad its third
state title and marked the
first state-title game appearance
since 2010.
• Girls soccer standouts.
Both North Shore and New
Trier made it to the state title
game in girls soccer this
season, something that had
never happened before. In
fact, while the Trevians
were playing in their fifth
straight title game, North
Shore hadn’t made ever
made it past the sectional
semifinal. Unfortunately
both teams would fall in
the title game, but both
have a lot to look forward
to. The Raiders, especially,
as they bring back pretty
much their entire roster.
• Lacrosse’s recognition.
Girls and boys lacrosse
made its debut as official
IHSA sports this season
and it’s not really shocking
the North Shore was
well represented. Loyola
defeated New Trier in boys
lacrosse for the title, while
New Trier’s girls took
second and Loyola’s girls
third. Lacrosse has always
been a big sport on the
North Shore, so it won’t be
a shock to see the teams at
state again next season.
• Baseball turnaround.
Loyola’s baseball team
won its first sectional title
in 10 years and did so behind
a nice combination of
good pitching and hitting.
Despite graduating many
players off to play college
ball, Loyola brings back
a good nucleus and had
success at its lower levels
as well.
Those were just some of
the athletic highlights this
year. I am looking forward
to many more next school
year.
