1. Chapora Fort<br />

The Charpora <strong>for</strong>t is <strong>in</strong> Bardez with a view of the Vaga<strong>to</strong>r Beach, Ozran Beach, Morjim<br />

Beach and the Chapora River. The route from Mapusa and the Vaga<strong>to</strong>r beach lead <strong>to</strong> the<br />

<strong>for</strong>t. Trekk<strong>in</strong>g lovers access the <strong>for</strong>t by climb<strong>in</strong>g the hill from Vaga<strong>to</strong>r Beach.<br />

2. Aguada Fort<br />

The Aguada Fort is at a distance of around 18 km from Panaji. Fort Aguada is a<strong>to</strong>p a hill<strong>to</strong>p<br />

near the mouth of the river Mandovi. The <strong>for</strong>t was named Aguada which means water <strong>in</strong><br />

Portuguese because of the presence of three freshwater spr<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>side. Aguada Fort is<br />

amongst the larger <strong>for</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> goa and covers the entire pen<strong>in</strong>sula at the southwestern tip of<br />

Bardez taluka. The <strong>for</strong>t is one of the <strong>places</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>visit</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Goa</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>youngsters</strong>.<br />

3. Reis Magos Fort<br />

Portuguese Viceroy Afonso de Noronha constructed the Reis Magos Fort <strong>in</strong> 1551 <strong>to</strong> guard the<br />

narrowest part of the Mandovi estuary aga<strong>in</strong>st any enemy. The <strong>for</strong>t is precisely opposite <strong>to</strong><br />

the capital city Panjim and close <strong>to</strong> the Reis Magos church <strong>in</strong> the extreme south of the Bardez<br />

taluka at the northern bank of the river Mandovi. Archeological Survey of India res<strong>to</strong>red the<br />

<strong>for</strong>t.<br />

4. Terekhol or Tiracol Fort<br />

The <strong>for</strong>t has its name after the river it stands on. Maharaja Khem Sawant Bhonsle, the Raja of<br />

Sawantwadi, <strong>in</strong> the 17 th century built it. Among the <strong>for</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> north goa, this one is <strong>in</strong> the<br />

checklist of <strong>places</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>visit</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Goa</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>youngsters</strong>! The Portuguese Viceroy Dom Pedro Miguel<br />

de Almeida captured the <strong>for</strong>t and rebuilt it <strong>in</strong> 1764.<br />

Now, it is a heritage hotel, and the church is open <strong>to</strong> the general public only on special<br />

occasions. The <strong>for</strong>t gives a great view of the paragliders over the Kalacha beach.<br />

5. Cabo de Rama Fort<br />

Canacona is <strong>in</strong> southern <strong>Goa</strong> at a distance of 30 km from Margao. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the Portuguese<br />

rule, this <strong>for</strong>t also served as a prison <strong>for</strong> political prisoners. The <strong>for</strong>t has all structures of a<br />

safe house used <strong>to</strong> susta<strong>in</strong> a liv<strong>in</strong>g. People still come <strong>to</strong> pray at the Chapel <strong>in</strong>side it. It also has<br />

a small grot<strong>to</strong> with a statue of the Virg<strong>in</strong> Mary. The <strong>for</strong>t has all evidence of life, moat, hot<br />

and cold water spr<strong>in</strong>g, large water tank s<strong>to</strong>rage. It is one of the best <strong>places</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>visit</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Goa</strong> <strong>for</strong><br />
