Who are we?
Sustainable Product Design BA (Hons)
Sustainable Design at Falmouth is truly unique, in its unification of ethical and
profitable innovation. Design outcomes are future thinking in their efforts to tackle
issues of modern sustainability- Key topics addressed include social inclusivity,
product longevity and future material solutions.
The course focuses on engagement with ‘live’ project briefs, and leading
sustainable industries, many of which are based locally in Cornwall. Alongside the
use of leading-edge design tools, it aims to express the impactful nature of design
and the methods by which it can be harnessed as a powerful and ethically aware
tool for change.
By approaching design in a sustainably considerate way, the Sustainable Design
course communicates a holistic and responsible methodology which is engaged
throughout the entire design journey.

What’s our show
about?
It’s Not Easy Being Green...
‘It’s not easy being green’ is an exhibition by 22 graduates from Sustainable Design
that responds to the pertinent social, environmental and ethical issues affecting
the world and society.
Amidst growing concerns of climate change, a growing population and scarce
resources, the responsibility of the designer has become amplified. It has become
apparent that the sustainable implications of a product must be considered.
But what does it mean to be “green”? Earth domes, flip flops and vegetables
immediately spring to mind. However, for us, Sustainable or Green Design is about
designing meaningful products that truly consider the people they are intended
for, and are socially and environmentally considerate.
Our 2018 show at New Designers London presents our individual concepts
of Sustainable Product Design. As Victor Papanek said “Design, if it is to be
ecologically responsible and socially responsive, must be revolutionary and
radical.”

Areas of Focus
These are the catagories our individual projects
focus on.
Championing Materials
Material choice is fundamental to the development of a
successful product. We spend time conducting in depth
research and exploring varying material applications to
ensure that the chosen material best suits the end product.
In many cases, modern materials and new manufacturing
techniques have been utilised, in a number of product
applications.
However, for some products, the materials utilised are
traditional and locally sourced to support local communities
and businesses. Some products featured have been handcrafted
in Cornwall by skilled craftspeople.
Compassionate Future
The future is often presented as a daunting place, with global
issues set to escalate and disperse. Our aim as designers
is to create products with compassion, that can make the
future a more friendly and accessible place. By utilising
considerate technologies, materials and systems, products
can be created to enhance people’s day to day lives and
make a more positive vision for the future.
Educating Tomorrow
Education is an issue that we all feel strongly about. The key
aim is to enable future generations to have the knowledge
and opportunities to make a positive impact. All of our
projects aim to educate others by raising awareness of
important subjects, spreading the word of sustainability and
making sure that future generations are aware of issues
from an early age. Our featured projects explore creative
learning techniques for children and alternative ways of
teaching.

Everyone’s Invited
Ensuring that people feel included and connected with
others is a key driver in many of the projects displayed. As
designers, it is a concept that remains at the core of our
ethical conduct.
Many people tackle the issue of inclusivity by understanding
user diversity and the varying capabilities, needs and
aspirations of the intended user. This knowledge is then
used to make informed and user-centred decisions.
The projects featured support the empowerment of women,
people with low dexterity, de-stigmatisation of common
societal perceptions and giving a voice to all individuals.
Holistic Health
Matters of mental health and physical wellbeing are
becoming increasingly discussed and publicised; stimulating
a global discussion and enabling individuals to be heard and
understood.
Our aim is to de-stigmatise some of the issues surrounding
mental health and encourage discussions around holistic
wellbeing, mental condition and physical health. Many
products featured aim to promote positive wellbeing by
enabling self-care, re-connecting user’s with nature and
promoting balance, harmony and awareness in the modern
world.
Throwaway Culture
As sustainable designers, we aim to explore ways of
addressing concepts such as material usage, product
longevity, design for disassembly and design for emotional
attachment. Using systems such as cradle to cradle aim
to challenge preconceived ideas and develop new ways of
impacting and changing our society’s behaviour through
design.
DESIGNER
Arthur Holt

What does sustainability mean to you?
Having a carefully balanced impact on the world, by harnessing and
taking care of natural resources. It means empowered and collaborative
communities.
How did you become interested in design?
After hearing from my sister about the exciting work that was being done
at Falmouth University, and seeing that design can be used to create
positive change. I had always been interested in social and environmental
challenges and sustainable design gave me a way of tackling these.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
Working with users, as every time I spoke to people about the project
the design would evolve. Doing this required preparation, effective
communication and listening, so ideas and thoughts didn’t get lost in
translation and would become imbedded in the solution.
What do you want to change?
I want to help create strong self-sufficient communities that can lead us
through the difficult times we currently face.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
and why?
It would be a colour duo of pastel blue and blazing orange, the colours of
my favourite type of squash ‘Crown Prince’. My other passion is cooking.
Flex
Adaptable
Workspace
Flex is a workspace designed for people who use a
wheelchair. It can be used as both a desk and a kitchen
prep area. Current accessible kitchen equipment can be
unaffordable and adaptations are not always possible.
Flex is a freestanding unit made to a custom height negating the need for costly
structural work and height adjusting mechanisms. There is space for basic cooking
equipment, modular cooking tools, groceries and desk storage.
Life Stories
Immersive Memory Experiences
Life Stories is about immersing people who have
dementia and their families in memories. It provides
people with a positive activity, rekindling relationships
and helping individuals learn about a person before
their dementia journey.
Life Stories combines new technology with the tangible method of using slides that
is associated with 35mm projectors. Each slide represents a memory, when it is
inserted into the box a short film about that memory plays, creating an accessible
way of accessing the benefits of digital media.
DESIGNER
Ashu Sharma

What does sustainability mean to you?
Sustaining the future for my kids and their kids.
How did you become interested in design?
I got interested in design by creating products and fixing broken
objects around my home. I have always been frustrated by the planned
obsolescence of certain products.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
Knowing that design can not be fully accomplished with only my thinking; it
has to be a collective process that is shared between a lot of people.
What do you want to change?
To make people want to change, and not just dream about the change.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
and why?
White, as that’s the colour my hair changed to, as I went through this
degree.
The finger puppet is very simple and easy to use, especially with the Picture Puppet
remover which helps the children take the crayon on and of. The current version has
a front finger support which helps support the finger while colouring. Children at the
JIA charity event enjoyed using the product and preferred it to the crayons they had
at home.
What does sustainability mean to you?
Sustainability is dedication and education combined. It is not only about
one’s thoughtfulness but it also means spreading the word and passing
down good practices to future generations.
How did you become interested in design?
User-friendliness of a product always surprises users with a smooth,
comfortable experience. This inspires me to be a surprise maker.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
Critical thinking is what I have learnt from the design process. It helps me to
see the world in perspectives, and to put myself in others’ shoes.
What do you want to change?
Sustainable design or design for health. Many people refuse to use healthy
products because of the stereotype and appearance of the product. I hope
to design products that provide functionality and aesthetics to encourage
healthy lifestyles.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
and why?
I would be a 10% black. It is in between the grayscale, sandwiched by
the two fundamental of colours - black and white. It is a subtle character
with a white background but stands out when used with black colour. It
sometimes performs as a misty background for other colours to shine like a
crepuscular ray.
Lumba’s design considers
ergonomics and
weight from the bag to
the lumbar area in order
to reduce the pressure
waistband component
keeps the bag close to the
user’s body for greater
lumbar support while
providing extra pockets
for essentials.
The range of choices for
caters for the user’s
personal style and daily
usage needs.
What does sustainability mean to you?
Whether it be environmental, social, health, or the many other aspects
of sustainability, it represents a change in the right direction. Improving
lifestyles and the environment from which we have evolved in through
thoughtful decision making. It is merely impossible to live 100% sustainably,
however, it is the consideration and small changes to our lifestyles that
makes all the difference.
How did you become interested in design?
I have always been one to express my thoughts and opinions creatively,
through art or music. I felt that I needed a more powerful tool to make
a real difference. Sustainable design allowed me to not only widen my
knowledge on current issues, but to actually apply my very own solutions.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
My projects have given me the courage to believe in myself and to trust my
instincts. I have a lot to give and now have the confidence to pursue my
ambitions.
What do you want to change?
Today, there are many who struggle / have a lack of encouragement to
think and live sustainably. My goal is to change this by pushing sustainability
to be a more prevalent and exciting subject. Looking after our planet
should not be seen as a chore. We are not just doing the dishes, we are
reconnecting ourselves to our environment.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
and why?
What I have found the most intriguing about design is how things are
constantly changing. Not only around me, but I myself am evolving
too. Today, I am orange: I am excited, optimistic, curious and feeling
adventurous about my future. Tomorrow, I might be something completely
different.
B.Light
It’s In Our Nature
The Naturalights Project focuses on the health and
wellbeing implications of working in a windowless
environment. “Proper synchronization with the earth’s
daily rotation has shown to be essential for health”.
Research has revealed that individuals working in
windowless environments can feel trapped and lose
track of time.
The design development for this product has primarily focused on mimicking the
effects of natural light, realistically and holistically. This has resulted in the B. Light:
A Biophilic Design for windowless home office spaces. With the use of Arduino
Technology, a dimming effect is set to the time of day to restore the sense of time
passing. The second feature is laser cut plywood that generates silhouettes of
branches, to reinforce the sense of being connected to nature.
Easing Symptoms of Separation Anxiety
“Scent is an incredible tool for regulating emotions. It
is the only sense processed by the limbric brain, which
means that a scent which is meaningful to you will
have a powerful effect” (Joanna Grace, Founder of The
Sensory Projects)
Children can show signs of separation anxiety as early
as 6 or 7 months, but for most, it peaks between 10
months to the age of 2. It causes stress and interrupts
sleep, for both the parent and the child.
The smell of a loved one has proven to calm symptoms of anxiety, however, not many
people resolve to thinking in a sensory way. The Tired Ones have been designed to
tackle this problem by incorporating the scent of a parent onto a child’s toy, as well
as reinforcing a routine before bed, to enhance a better nights sleep.
What does sustainability mean to you?
Sustainability covers such a broad range of issues. Currently, popular topics
include ocean plastic, social equality and conservation. These issues are all
extremely important, but I feel they only cover a fraction of the sustainable
issues we face. Sustainability to me, means a few small changes by every
person on the planet, to make a big difference.
How did you become interested in design?
Personally, business and sustainability are key areas of interest. Taking a
year out of studying these topics at a-level, I began to take interest in design
and how it can affect business and sustainability. Studying Sustainable
Product Design at Falmouth has given me the opportunity to nurture these
interests.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
Confidence: I believe the most valuable asset as a sustainable designer is
confidence in what you are doing and your ability to achieve your goals.
What do you want to change?
I want to change people’s perception of sustainability. Too many people
know too little about the issues that affect them the most.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
and why?
Woodland Waste
with Tom Raffield and The Eden Project
The Woodland Waste is a collaboration between several
like-minded organisations, ultimately aiming to help
educate and increase awareness about sustainability.
Created with Tom Raffield, The Eden Project and Tate
and Harmer Architects the wall light aims to encourage
conversation about sustainability through unique and
thoughtful design.
A mosaic of unique wooden veneer tiles is illuminated by a warm glowing LED light,
highlighting the natural colours and shapes within the wood. The veneer is taken
from a waste stream of Tom Raffield. This reduces the environmental impact of the
business, and of the light. The manufacture of the light is designed to be simple.
This provides an opportunity to invite charities or organisations to help assemble
the lights as part of a social initiative, providing employment and training to improve
social or technical skills.
What does sustainability mean to you?
Sustainability is really complex but I guess I would summarise it as, working
to create a more restorative world through positive change. The challenge is
how you communicate it to other people.
How did you become interested in design?
William Morris once said “Have nothing in your house that you do not
know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”. Design has the potential to
influence, inspire and excite, to reflect our intentions and what we believe
in, that’s what I find so interesting.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
I have learned to be curious, to allow things to evolve naturally, to observe
the world in new ways and take inspiration from accidents and mistakes.
I have allowed myself to take diversions and follow different paths
throughout the projects – nothing is ever complete, accepting that has been
a valuable lesson.
What do you want to change?
I aspire to work on a model of design that can make us fully engage in the
present whilst having the ability to hold memories of our past and facilitate
aspirations for our future. Changing the emphasis we put on certain
products.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
and why?
Silver, it compliments every colour to create an interesting and unique
feature, it is a colour that never goes out of style and can be used in almost
every situation to bring something new and exciting.
fibre texture.
The day cot for babies lined with a rare breed sheepskin can be reversed to function
as a sheepskin upholstered stool. Incorporating woven woollen yarn, natural felt,
carded wool padding and the sheepskin itself, demonstrating some of the uses of
the material, traditional crafts and upholstery techniques.
What does sustainability mean to you?
“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our
children.” To me sustainability is encouraging positive wellbeing and a
deeper connection between people and planet so that they, in turn, feel a
responsibility and an appreciation of our planet.
How did you become interested in design?
From a young age I’ve had a questioning and creative mind. I would be
making things from whatever I could find to enhance my play which has led
me to my interest in crafting and the positive ways it can affect our feelings
of wellbeing.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
I’ve enjoyed having the time to think and explore thoroughly when tackling
problems to produce the most effective solution.
What do you want to change?
People’s perception of sustainability. It is not a huge challenge to right our
wrongs, small steps and teamwork can lead to big change.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
and why?
Being from the flat Lincolnshire Fens I’ve always found peace and
inspiration in looking up at the wide skies and watching the clouds float
by. As the pen gets older the colour will fade just like the light in the day.
Hex
Engaging People with
the Outdoors
Hex is an interactive stand for outdoor spaces to
encourage a connection between people and place.
It will be implemented in spaces around the country,
towns and parks. The hexagon pieces are taken out and
used to explore the space. The words on the back are
taken from the Japanese ‘Shirin Yoku’ (forest bathing)
which is a restorative therapy used to connect people
with the world around them again. Even if people don’t
pick up a hexagon, the mirrors reflect the surroundings
so it can be used passively.
By encouraging this connection between people and place we will notice things that
maybe we miss because we are looking at phones or thinking about the next thing.
Building this relationship will help us to see what we can do to help our environment.
What does sustainability mean to you?
It’s such a core part of modern design, but I only see it as another necessity
alongside good form and effective function. I think there’s a time and
a place for celebrating sustainability in design, but I believe that young
designers that use it as a necessary and essential tool within the process
will make the effective difference and be prepared for the future.
How did you become interested in design?
I’ve been making things since I was small, bodging things together just for
the hell of it. It was at university I realised I preferred looking at problems
that required a designed solution - thinking of creative ways to solve
problems and understanding the social, environmental and economic
implications of it on a real-world scale.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
The way I approach problems has changed dramatically, viewing them now
as briefs to be researched and approached with an open mind and creative
solutions. My projects this year have pushed me to look into new areas of
design and technology, pushing me to look at the merging of industries to
solve common problems, however I think my lack of focus in any single area
may make my initial, post-university direction difficult to decide.
What do you want to change?
There’s so much that needs solving, it’s difficult to choose just a few as
priorities. I want to help people understand some of the most important
problems future generations will face with open-minded design. I want to
merge emerging industries and bring the future into today to help show
that these problems are solvable in our lifetime.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
and why?
I’d be the client’s favourite colour. Just kidding, I’d be a darker shade which
isn’t used centre-stage, but is essential to make any image realistic and
relatable.
NAVA
With the emergence of automated technology in
vehicles, one of society’s major hurdles is our trust
that these systems will improve our driving experience
in safety, comfort and sustainability. Integrated into
the steering wheel through advanced textiles, NAVA
monitors the stress and fatigue in it’s driver through
fluctuating stimuli such as heart rate, skin temperature
and humidity, and compressive grip. If the user moves
out of a personalised safe threshold, they are prone to
making irrational human-errors based on drowsiness
or panic, so NAVA introduces a driverless system which
is able to calculate the safest decision when the user
isn’t able to.
NAVA places itself at the introduction of Phase 3 in
‘Conditional Automation’ around 2030, that still relies
on human control but with a monitored response to
hazardous conditions with a driverless system that
can take the user out of danger. With the marriage of
textiles and technology meeting the growing trend of
fabrics in vehicle interiors, the congregation of these
industries could meet with systems like NAVA to form a
new generation of unified design.
Sustainability is the ability of something to continue. It means everything to
What does sustainability mean to you?
There is much misconception around what is meant by sustainability. For
me, it’s about questioning. Should I use that material, how could it help,
who could it hurt, who has it hurt? How could that product be better, what
does the user think, or is it even needed?
How did you become interested in design?
I have always been a maker and had the desire to be creative. However,
it was after a year internship in engineering where I decided to change
direction and study Sustainable Product Design at university.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
Being able to let go of old concepts, while adapting and embracing new
creative solutions. It is easy to latch on to your first solution to the design
brief. However, being able to let go of that idea and try something new is
often one of the hardest but most beneficial steps in the design process.
What do you want to change?
The way we design. For a designer to let go of their ideas and give them
away for others to develop is a tough task, despite this, some do it. I feel
open source design has the promise to tackle some of the worlds biggest
problems by losing the boundaries of the traditional design process.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
and why?
I am always interested in the way things work, if you have ever had the
delight of working with me you may have found your fancy pen taken apart.
I’m less fussed about the colour, and more fussed about the mechanism.
For this reason I chose a mechanical, refillable copic, which can be green.
Open Source Paper Recycling Tool
FORMiT is a project for designers, makers and educators. It is an open source
recycling tool for creating 3D objects from recycled paper pulp. The tool works by
drawing water and pulped paper through a porous mould binding the paper fibers
together, the paper is then removed from the mould to produce a 3D object. The
process is similar to the one used in industry to make egg boxes.
Paper is an easily recycled and versatile material which is one of the inspiring
factors for this project. The project hopes makers and designers adopt the ideas
and processes shown, to start experimenting with this material themselves.
Recent worries over the harm of single use products and their damaging effects to
the environment has highlighted the lack of education around sustainable issues.
FORMiT offers a resource for educators to use for creating a hands-on learning
opportunity. The tool provides an opportunity for pupils to see the process of
recycling existing materials into new objects, with almost instant results.
Because the projects open source ethos, you can find out how to build the FORMiT
What does sustainability mean to you?
In my mind the word that best describes sustainability is stewardship. We
can’t live without consuming, the challenge lies in living without consuming
excessively and/or mindlessly. Sustainability means not buying and
designing products which have little to no real use. Consume at a rate which
allows the world to sustain itself. This is my is personal life and it is reflected
in my work.
How did you become interested in design?
Creating something from nothing, the satisfaction of creating something
that perfectly fits you as a unique individual. No one could do it for me.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
Collaborating, but not just with people in your field. I gained the confidence
to approach people from various fields as well as clients. This is the most
valuable skill because it’s only by living and learning about a problem that
you can effectively solve it. You’ll never know everything, but, you can start
by asking a question without fear of rejection.
What do you want to change?
Changing consumers purchasing habits without them knowing, that
would be my effort towards change. Although, I’d rather do more. I don’t
expect to make a huge difference by myself. I want to be part of the joint
movement, changing one person’s mentality at a time through design which
is more than just the superficial aesthetics of an object. Working with social
businesses which choose their clients selectively as much as companies
choose their designers.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
Aria
Aria is a meditation aid for beginners that are having
difficulty in learning, as well as intermediates that are
trying to improve. Aria expands and contracts so that
the user has an external stimulus to concentrate on
and use as the meditation object. At the start of the
meditation session the user will be helped by matching
their breath to a breathing cycle that helps you relax
with the motion of Aria.
There is a built in GSR sensor (galvanic skin response)
which is used to measure the skin conductivity level, a
physiological parameter that is induced by emotional
brain activity.
An effective meditation will mean that the person in
question is serene and in the moment. In this scenario
Aria does not move. The moment it senses that the
mind is wondering, Aria will start moving again so that
the user is made aware straight away that he/she lost
concentration and can therefore regain focus on the
motion. The motion varies depending on the state the
person is in, the more it moves the less the mediation
is being effective.
animations, renders, infographics and photos, and developing skills in
verbal communication through presentations, reviews and other similar
sessions.
What do you want to change?
I want to change the way we feed our world. Recognising new methods of
food production which approach the current issues with conventional food
production, distribution and consumption have inspired me. Learning more
has taught me the significance of this issue.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
and why?
White. A colour used to achieve detail and increase realism in the artwork,
however not always easy to use correctly. This resembles the perfectionist
in me, although it may be the cause of great frustration, it is the source to
some of my best work.
Inclusive Gardening
Tool Attachment
Nature and gardening can hugely benefit human health and well-being and improve
social skills, as well as having an extremely positive impact on people with disabilities.
Allay is a small hand gardening tool attachment that presents a new grip, providing
the option to hold the tool in different positions, as well as absorbing any unexpected
shock experienced from impact with harder debris.
This new grip promotes healthy wrist positioning throughout different gardening
tasks and allows the user to confidently adapt to different gardening environments,
such as raised flower beds.
With this product being aimed more at elderly consumers, its purpose is to be used
with existing tools, with consideration towards the user already owning a collection
of gardening tools. They may find these existing tools more difficult to use now due
to low dexterity, and having to replace them all would be an expensive option.
Accessible Indoor Growing System
Conventional agriculture is becoming increasingly under pressure, and more and
more of us are living together, particularly in urban environments. Therefore, I
wanted to create a product in which families could interact, learn and produce their
own fresh food inside their own homes.
With great focus towards urban homes, the Helix home grower is designed for use
inside existing kitchens. It provides a manual, low tech system, but one that is low
maintenance and easy to use.
A rotating height adjustable platform utilises the most productive environment
for 3 different growth stages. This platform holds a variety of removable modules
allowing for different types of vegetables to be grown.
This product also provides additional features that allow for efficient preparation
and serving of the harvested vegetables. These include a spinning colander tray,
providing portion guidance, and a removable lid/plate. All giving this product
purpose right from the seed to the consumers plate.
What does sustainability mean to you?
I don’t have a clear definition of Sustainability, but my view is that it centers
around being holistic, engaging yourself with others and the environment.
It’s about being aware and considerate of things and people around you,
and trying to become whole.
How did you become interested in design?
I am passionate about people in communities and how they perceive
themselves in their relationship with the world. This involves rethinking
the idea of individualism and progression in society and economy. Getting
out of my comfort zone and experiencing life is the most vulnerable yet
beautiful inspiration for design. It gives me first-hand experience to feel and
be, this turns my design into real life testimony.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
I’ve gained the way of making and seeing, it involves being environmentally
conscious, creative, passionate and dedicated. These are Skills that require
patience and time to grow.
What do you want to change?
“WE WANT TO CHANGE…”, is a tagline for myself when designing and
making a product. Through designing, we are influencing people around us,
and the world that we are living in. Yes, is sounds quite idealistic, yet if we
never try to make anything happen, it will never happen.
The purpose of design is to connect people through shared experience
and feeling, and in this way I hope to unify individuals and promote
communitarianism.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
Peace Comes from Within
Ease has been inspired by the ‘Sensory Beings’ project,
which was ran by sensory specialist Joanna Grace
during the Sustainable Design course at Falmouth.
Ease is primarily designed for autistic adolescents but
can also be used by any individual who experiences
feelings of anxiety in unsettling situations.
Autism is considered as a “lifelong developmental
disability that affects how people perceive the world
and interact with others” (NHS)”.
This difference in perception can lead to sensory
overload for some, which can lead to anxiety and
difficulty interacting with others. Inspired by Jeanet’s
own experiences in adapting to a new culture, Ease
allows those with anxiety to be calmed and focused in
a distracting environment.
What does sustainability mean to you?
To me, sustainability is about changing consumer culture by promoting
low quantity, high quality goods. To ensure long product life, sustainable
approaches must be taken into account, not only in design and production,
but also within consumer attitudes - this is done by encouraging an
emotional bond, increasing care for products and tackling the ‘throw away’
culture.
How did you become interested in design?
I became aware of the concept of design relatively late in my youth. For
as long as I can remember I have been actively making, fixing and altering
belongings - not appreciating the level of incorporation of design within
everyday life.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
My most valued skill - which came as quite a surprise - is textile work.
Through the development of one of my projects, I gained a new found
respect for the art of sewing; a skill which has and always will be incredibly
universal.
What do you want to change?
The attitude and appreciation towards longevity within products.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
and why?
As I am sat here answering these questions in the Portuguese city of
Lisbon, I would have to say Laguna Yellow. I am incredibly susceptible to my
surroundings and draw aesthetic inspiration from timeless cultures.
The stylish exterior blends with the city aesthetic
while its expandability creates a practical backpack for
A key factor in sustainability is longevity. Penarth packs
are made from high quality waxed canvas sourced in
Dundee, Scotland. The fabric is made from natural
fibres which dramatically reduces microfiber pollution.
The pack was created with functionality and durability
in mind; replacing components with more resistant
alternatives ensures a longer product life.
What does sustainability mean to you?
For me, sustainability is the connection that people and products have
with each other, that enables them to achieve their functions and desires
without damaging the environment for future generations.
How did you become interested in design?
My interest in design was sparked by the freedom to create products which
are important to me personally, and the ability to share these products with
those people who would benefit from them the most.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
By working alongside various collaborators I have managed to refine my
designs and communications as well as improve my understanding of CAD.
What do you want to change?
With the ever-increasing pace of today’s environment, I hope to
revolutionise the way we socialise and communicate with the people
around us. I believe that designating time for ourselves increases happiness
and enables us to realise what the true necessities are amongst the people
and products with which we surround ourselves.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
and why?
I would choose to be a neutral tone Copic as this would allow me to be
easily incorporated into a wide array of designs and to become a stronger
colour when mixed with a few pops of colours.
What does sustainability mean to you?
Sustainability aims to improve the world we live in for ourselves, other
species and importantly future generations. A sustainable future calls for us
to make difficult decisions and constantly question the decisions we make,
leading to a better future.
How did you become interested in design?
From a young age design allowed me to create and build how I wanted the
world to be. Through A-Levels I became fascinated by sustainability and
ecology, and Sustainable product design allowed me to combine these
passions with design and making. This has developed into an interest in all
areas of design, from the buildings we live in to the products we use.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
Critical analysis of problems and finding solutions that work for the user
and the environment, and promote sustainable values. This has been a key
skill I have learnt through my recent projects.
What do you want to change?
For me the biggest change needs to be resource efficiency and utilisation
through a shift to the Circular Economy. Designing products to be
disassembled, truly recyclable and for the materials to cascade through
multiple use cycles will leave the planet in a better place than we received it.
Promoting sustainable values through a change in mindset for designers is
key.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
design and standardised components promotes repair and remanufacture of the
product. As part of a product leasing model the user is encouraged to return the
product for repairs. Kor is manufactured from aluminium, supporting product
What does sustainability mean to you?
To me, sustainability is being aware of the consequences of our actions and
the understanding of how to reduce our impact as individuals.
How did you become interested in design?
I guess watching diggers at construction sites, then playing with lego, then
bikes etc. as a kid led me to question how things worked and were made.
Once you understand how something works, it’s a lot easier to make
informed decisions about how to make it work even better.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
From all of my experience and use of such a wide variety of tools, processes
and materials I have gained a better understanding of what makes a
successful or viable project.
What do you want to change?
I want to change how sustainability is viewed by others. As designers we are
immersed in the notion of sustainability daily. I want more people to learn
that being more sustainable isn’t about being a hippy or living in a tent, but
rather the much simpler idea that we should give more consideration to the
choices we make and the stuff we buy.
What does sustainability mean to you?
To me, sustainability is innovation. It’s the ability to explore and overcome
vast challenges and obstacles to create something that is responsible
throughout its lifecycle. Not only to the environment, but with economical
and social awareness. It is a responsibility to preserve our relationship with
world around us and our future in it.
How did you become interested in design?
As a child, with mildly destructive tendencies, I was always fascinated
about how things were put together… by taking them apart. An extensive
lego collection meant weekends of translating visualisations into physical
objects. Design gave me the freedom to create what I wanted. Whereas
now, my sustainable design knowledge is enabling me to create what is
needed.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
User centered design is the most valuable skill I have gained during my
projects. Critically analysing the design and its direction has been key to
arriving at practical solutions that promote sustainable values and fulfil the
user’s needs.
What do you want to change?
I want to help change the face of sustainability. Being responsible does not
correlate with being plain or boring, it also doesn’t mean using cardboard
and sacrificing the user experience.
You’re a new addition to the copic box, which colour would you be
To me, sustainability is a nuanced and complicated solution wrapped
around a man-made issue. There is much room for improvement within all
areas of sustainability, but every day I am heartened by the dedication and
progress made by mindful individuals and companies.
How did you become interested in design?
to not only one, but thousands of people. Thousands of people whose
lives could be forever improved with good design. That responsibility and
opportunity to connect and communicate with people of all walks of life is
What do you want to change?
I want to educate people; I want to help put ignorance to rest in the many
What does sustainability mean to you?
I like the quote “treating the world as if we plan to stay”. It’s not only using
electric cars and putting out the recycling but creating a fair society that
works for everyone and setting up the systems that will provide people and
the planet to meet their needs indefinitely.
How did you become interested in design?
I always had the stereotypical urge to take things apart as a kid, that most
designers had. I think my drive really took off during school when myself
and a friend were always trying to one-up each other in DT class. When I
started realising the opportunities that were there in design, I decided to
follow that path.
The most valuable skill you have gained during your projects?
My physical understanding of materials and making physical products has
increased dramatically but the most important skill I’ve developed is the
ability to utilise empathy. To step into the shoes of the user and understand
what their true needs are is one of the most valuable skills.
What do you want to change?
I want to make good, sustainable design more accessible to those less-abled
in society.
or as ocean waste. With an estimated 35 million surfers
What does sustainability mean to you?
In my little naive mind being sustainable is about leaving as little carbon
footprint as possible by making informed decisions. It doesn’t always work,
but there’s no harm in trying.
How did you become interested in design?
Design world came to me alongside my first massive desktop computer and
teenage artworks deep by scouring the first online tutorials and, of course,
other pubescent masterpieces on Deviantart.
I am glad I have learned how to weld during my live project with Bodj,
