AERO CLUB & FLIGHT TRAINING CENTER
INTERESTED IN OBTAINING AN UNMANNED
AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS CERTIFICATE?
An unmanned aircraft system (UAS), also known as a drone, is an aircraft
without a human pilot onboard. Instead, the UAS is controlled by an operator
and equipment on the ground for safe and efficient operation of that aircraft.
It is defined by statute as an aircraft that is operated without the possibility of
direct human intervention from within or on the aircraft (Public Law 112-95,
Section 331(8)).
FIRST-TIME PILOTS
TO BECOME A PILOT YOU MUST:
• Be at least 16 years old
• Be able to read, speak, write and understand English. (Exceptions may
be made if the person is unable to meet one of these requirements for a
medical reason, such as hearing impairment.)
• Be in a physical and mental condition that allows for safe operation of
a small UAS
• Pass the initial aeronautical knowledge exam at an FAA-approved
knowledge testing center
PILOT CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS
• Must be easily accessible by the remote pilot during all UAS operations
• Valid for two years; certificate holders must pass a recurrent knowledge test
every two years
APPLICATION PROCESS
Schedule an initial and recurrent FAA knowledge exam appointment for the
(UAG) Unmanned Aircraft General. Pilot must be at least 16 years of age and
pass an exam consisting of 60 questions with a score of 70% or better, within
an allotted two-hour time frame. No instructor endorsement or other form of
written authorization is required.
Note: Yokota Air Base has flight restrictions and guidance on remotely piloted
and controlled model aircraft operations. Please review 374 AWI 13-204,
374 AWI 13-269 and the Remotely Piloted and Controlled Model Aircraft
Operations Guidance Memorandum.
