FEATURE STORY After Chris graduated from Granby Memorial High School in 2007, he attended college in Northern Ireland, where he “found his passion for food amongst the local butcher shops, markets and catches from the Irish coast,” Alan says. Chris returned to Connecticut in 2010 to attend culinary school and start his professional career, and Scott followed suit upon his graduation from GMHS in 2012. “Growing up in Granby, Chris and Scott recall being surrounded with a strong sense of community,” Alan observes. “The boys are committed to bringing the same sense of community and values they experienced in Granby into the demanding world of the restaurant kitchen.” As their sons grew, Alan and Pamela made it a priority to spend time together as a family watching movies, playing board games, golfing and the like. “Going to church and eating dinner together were special occasions that always seemed to bring us closer together as a family,” Pamela notes. Further, the family spent summers at the Lake George RV Park in upstate New York, where they would make the most of the summertime by boating, fishing, hiking, whitewater rafting, swimming, and playing golf and tennis. Frequent trips home to Northern Ireland to visit family remain a popular destination for the couple — although at this point, of course, Alan and Pamela have also clearly established a home here in Granby. GRANBY HISTORY This Month in Granby History By Ken Kuhl GRANBY — Farmington Canal’s Groundbreaking July 4, 1825 — Ever since the days of Jamestown and Plymouth, Americans have wanted to move west. The first trailblazers, such as Daniel Boone, hewed their way on foot and by horseback. Later, homesteaders followed by wagon, and those who traveled America’s rivers used the keelboat to carry all their worldly possessions. Yet real growth in the movement of people and goods west began with the use of the canal. Since the early 18th century, people had dreamed of building a canal across New York that would connect the Great Lakes to the Hudson River, which would give access to New York City and the Atlantic Ocean. In the early 19th century, after initially seeking federal government assistance, New York Mayor Dewitt Clinton successfully petitioned the New York State legislature to build a canal and bring that dream to reality. Some called it Clinton’s Ditch. Construction on the Erie Canal began in 1817 and was completed in 1825. The canal was an amazing success, encouraging a group of Connecticut investors to build a canal to connect Long Island Sound to northern New England. The original plans called for the canal to extend north from New Haven’s tidewaters through Granby up into Massachusetts, ending at Northampton. Also proposed was a branch that would start in Farmington, pass through Unionville and end in Colebrook. The eventual plans for the canal were to connect to the Erie Canal via New York’s Hudson River. However, final construction ended up being only the 80 miles of the main line from New Haven to Northampton and the 3.5 miles of the branch in Unionville. On July 4, 1825, the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Farmington Canal took place at Salmon Brook Village in Granby. Governor Oliver Wolcott gave the day’s address to the 2,000-3,000 people in attendance and had the honor of turning over the first spade of earth; he described the canal’s purpose as “uniting the Valley of the Connecticut River with the city of New Haven.” The canal was completed and opened by 1828 between New Haven and Granby. The completed canal was 20 feet wide by 4 feet deep, and required moving 4 million cubic yards of earth and rock with shovels, wheelbarrows and horse-drawn wagons. The canal, however, was never financially successful. By the 1830s, the country had a complete water route from New York City to New Orleans. By 1840, over 3,000 miles of canals had been built. Yet a new mode of transportation, the railroad, would soon render most of them unprofitable, including the Farmington Canal. On Jan. 11, 1848, the year trains began running from New Haven to Plainville, all canal operations ceased. Today, the former canal is part of the Rails to Trails program and runs from downtown New Haven up to Northampton, Massachusetts. The entire length of the canal right of way in Connecticut is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. UNITED STATES July 5, 1825 — The treaty of July 5 is enacted between the Sioux Nation and the United States of America. WORLD July 18, 1825 — Uruguay secedes from Brazil.
