Do you know what the phrase “dog days of summer” actually 

means? I always assumed it referred to the sticky, sweltering 

days of the season when man’s best friend lethargically lazes 

around panting in the heat. Silly me. According to Wikipedia, 

the expression has nothing to do with Fido and was originally 

coined by ancient Greeks and Romans when the “dog star,” Sirius, 

shined the brightest—typically in late July—which they believed, 

when combined with the sun’s intensity, caused blisteringly hot 

summer temps. You learn something new every day, right? 

I still prefer my interpretation (astrology’s never been my strong suit) so I find it particularly 

fitting that this month’s issue is dedicated to actual dogs—and all our other beloved furry 

and feathered friends—that we 

lovingly call family.

Animals aside, we have much more in store too. For those 

nearing or who have reached retirement, I recommend reading 

“Senior Center Activities for All” (page 62). You might be surprised 

to learn about the array of offerings available, which definitely 

go beyond bingo (think clogging, crafts, computer classes, monthly movies, and so much more). 

My grandma—who turns 97 next month(!)—is living proof that staying active and connected to 

community are key components to aging gracefully. 

July also happens to be National Grilling and Ice Cream Month and—with Independence Day, 

and blazing temps, upon us—it’s a prime time to indulge in both. Invite your friends, neighbors, 

and family over for a backyard BBQ starring juicy, build-your-own cheeseburgers with homemade 

pickles (see page 78 for the recipe) and make sure to save room for one of our six frozen favorites 

in “The Cool List” on page 72. 

As we journey into the upcoming “dog days,” I hope you find somewhere nice and cool to flip 

through the pet-filled pages of this issue. Cheers!

We believe that education can 

start as early as 18 months, as 

toddler programs offer children 

an environment where he/she 

can learn to socialize and use 

large and small motor skills, as 

well as be exposed to sensory 

building, music enrichment, 

and movement. The younger 

you can introduce your child to 

these things, the better prepared he/she will be. With that, a pre-K 

classroom usually starts at the age of four, where children learn to 

expand their learning through name writing, counting, math skills, 

and phonics. It’s important to find a pre-k that offers extracurricular 

activities—such as Spanish, ballet, and soccer—to further enhance 

their growth and abilities.

fondly on childhood 

summers in Mexico, making 

tortillas by hand with her 

aunts and grandmothers. She 

grew up surrounded by foodie culture in San 

Francisco, but she attributes her love of cooking 

and good food to the rich flavors of her youth. 

Two years ago, she opened Sutter Street 

Taqueria, making the leap from successful 

health care administrator to small business 

owner. Although it was a frightening prospect 

at first, it was her parents’ absolute faith in her 

that enabled the entrepreneur to pursue her 

dream. “I went to them and said, ‘Hey, I want 

to take my lifelong knowledge of Mexican food 

and open a restaurant,’” she recalls. “It took 

my father five seconds to say, ‘sure,’ and give 

me the money.” 

Since then, Rodriguez has built a reputation 

around being a hard worker, once putting in 240 

days straight without any time off. “My friends 

had to force me to go on vacation,” she says 

with a laugh. She also does what she can to give 

back, by being a Rotarian, board member for 

the Folsom Chamber of Commerce and Twin 

Lakes Food Bank, and a commissioner for the 

Historic Folsom Commission. In addition, she 

regularly donates food to area nonprofits, even 

establishing a “suspended meal initiative” at 

the taqueria, where diners can purchase a 

meal for those who are hungry and may be 

experiencing financial difficulties. For her 

efforts, she received the 6th Assembly District’s 

Woman of the Year Award for 2018. “When you 

invest back in community, it builds a stronger 

area,” Rodriguez shares. “It’s why Folsom is 

such an attractive place to live.”

JULY 12 

Econome Family Park Grand Opening 

The public is invited to a ribbon-cutting 

ceremony at 7:30 p.m. for Folsom’s new 

Econome Park. Located at 1900 Parkway 

Drive North and named to honor brothers 

George and Nick Econome and their 

respective wives, Marilyn and Ann, for their 

collective contributions to the community, 

the park incorporates state-of-the-art design 

features and environmental components. 

Recreational amenities include bocce ball 

courts, synthetic and natural turf soccer 

fields, tennis courts, and an open-play turf 

area. A half-mile perimeter walking path 

connects to two play areas and covered picnic 

areas and provides access to the Parkway 

trail system. The park’s environmental 

components include LED lighting for reduced 

energy use, vegetative swales to filter rain 

water and help replenish the aquifer, and 

reduced water-use landscaping.

Life Lessons Reception 

The Gallery at 48 Natoma features a new 

exhibit with figurative sculptures by Amanda 

Paoletti, paintings by Chris Foster, and textile 

portraits by Sandra Poteet. Don’t miss a free

Wacky Dash 

Register now and end the summer on a 

wet and wild note at this fourth annual 

obstacle course challenge at Rodeo Park. 

The family-friendly event features mud pits, 

balance beams, tightropes, water slides, giant 

inflatables, a foam tunnel, and other fun 

surprises. Tackle the course as an individual 

or form a team with your friends, family, 

and co-workers. Zany and colorful attire is 

encouraged, and all registered participants 

take home a colorful custom medal to

Palladio at Broadstone’s Wednesday 

Night Summer Concert Series 

Summer is here, and so is a plethora of 

live music at local outdoor venues. Grab 

your calendar and make note of the 

various concert series! The El Dorado Hills 

Community Services District’s Summer 

Concert in the Park runs on select Fridays 

through August, with local band Clean 

Slate taking the stage on July 20. This free 

concert is held at the EDH Community Park and offers food for purchase, 

a bounce house, and other children’s activities. “[This is] the best venue in 

El Dorado Hills to enjoy entertainment in a fun, safe, and family-friendly 

environment,” explains Michael Cottrell of the EDH CSD. Folsom Concerts 

in the Park is held at Folsom City Lions Park on Fridays through July from 

7-9 p.m. Food trucks are present, although picnics, along with blankets 

and chairs, are encouraged. Genres of music range from R&B to classic 

rock and country, and the July lineup includes artists Innersoul, Simple 

Creation, Have Mercy Band, and Elana Jane. “The concerts are a nice, 

relaxing way to spend Friday evenings with family and friends. The best 

part is it brings the community together in a beautiful outdoor setting,” 

says Lesley Miller of the City of Folsom. Additional offerings include 

Palladio at Broadstone’s Wednesday Night Summer Concert Series, 

which runs through August from 7-9 p.m., Live on 

the Boulevard at Steven Young Amphitheater in El 

Dorado Hills every Thursday through September 13 

from 7-9 p.m., and Twilight Thursday from 7:30-9:15 

p.m. at the Historic Folsom Amphitheater through

Barnyard Experience

After years in the 

making the Barnyard 

Experience—a 

nature-based educational center that provides guests with fun and 

interactive learning experiences at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary—is 

finally open. The 3,400-square-foot barn is the new and improved 

home for rescued farm animals like miniature donkeys, Hallie and 

Rosie; Gus the draft horse; miniature horse Dasher; zebu Ernie, and 

more. Guests can also view an active bee hive as the busy workers 

produce honey and honeycomb in their indoor hive, pan for 

gemstones (additional fee) in the 40-foot C.J. Harrison memorial 

sluice, milk an artificial cow, and view a historic display of the Empire 

Ranch Barn via artifacts and photos donated 

by the Folsom Historical Society. The Barnyard 

Experience is open during regular zoo hours:

Kamlika Chandla 

Creative Spirit

With a background in and passion for psychology, artist Kamlika Chandla uses her insight to paint 

portraits teeming with deep, often pensive emotions. Relocating to El Dorado Hills two years 

ago, Chandla is also a published poet and art instructor, as well as the founder of Musart, a 

nonprofit she manages alongside her younger brother. Standing for “music and art,” Musart 

aims to collaborate with schools and organizations by creating a forum where children can 

explore their creative spirit, especially those who have experienced trauma and abuse. 

Though she’s painted since childhood, Chandla didn’t Participating become a full-time artists artist from till the 2011. Friends In of the 

addition to teaching workshops, commissioning work, and traveling, the Harris artist Center is also hard Art Association 

work producing a series of abstract paintings as part of two solo shows: Cosmos and Beauty in 

Diversity. “With [Beauty in Diversity], I intend to trigger a dialogue on the notions of beauty and 

how real beauty, in fact, lay in diversity,” shares Chandla.

HLB: WHAT WERE YOU LIKE AS A YOUNG ARTIST? 

KC: Growing up in a traditional, conservative Asian [household], only academics were considered respectable routes 

forward; all creative pursuits were expected to be treated as vocational, free-time pursuits. As a child and young adult, 

I constantly daydreamed [about being] an artist and a writer and would fantasize about exhibitions and art shows, 

publishing books, and being besieged by the world of ink and color. Nevertheless, I drew and painted consistently, had 

my parents adorn all the walls of our house with my art, and requested art supplies and drawing books as gifts. They 

considered me unstoppable and stubborn but also recognized that my creative spirit couldn’t be bottled for long. 

HLB: DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ARTISTS JUST STARTING OUT? 

KC: It takes courage, because oftentimes people think they have to be talented to begin in the first place, and that’s not 

true. All you need is interest and patience to learn a new skill. It’s best to have an open mind and explore the myriad of 

possibilities that creativity renders in terms of style, complexity, content, or composition. For those exploring painting 

for the first time, I can’t stress enough the importance of observation and drawing skills. There’s no such thing as a bad 

drawing or an ugly painting—it’s all about getting mileage on the canvas. Most importantly, stay curious and open to 

your unique instinct and inner voice—it can be your best friend.

associations—almost as though it’s [reserved for] retirement. I’d like young people, even schoolchildren, to get out there 

and explore their creative spirit. It’s good to have a hobby or develop a new skill at every stage of your life; in the end, it’s

About 95 percent of pet owners consider their furry friends to be 

family members, and about half will buy them a birthday or holiday 

present this year, according to a Harris Poll. But did you know these 

relationships also have positive effects on your physical and mental 

health? Read on for the myriad of ways pets help humans heal. 

1 The Feeling is Mutual 

“There have been studies [done proving that] the benefits are mutual, and 

the relationship is essential to the well-being of both the human and the animal,” 

says Wendy Goossen, CTR, director of cancer services at Marshall Medical Center. 

“Studies have shown that oxytocin levels are increased in dogs when they interact 

with their owner as opposed to strangers.” 

2 Unconditional Love 

Something that makes the human-animal relationship so easy is that it’s 

not complicated, says Jeremy Ernst, DO, psychiatrist at Marshall Medical Center.

3 Let’s Get Physical 

Susan Garlinghouse, DVM, a 

veterinarian at Goldorado Animal Hospital 

in Cameron Park, says dog owners, on 

average, tend to walk almost twice as 

much per week as non-dog owners, and 

are 54 percent more likely to meet the 

recommended levels of physical exercise. 

4 Allergy Alleviation 

Having a family pet will benefit the 

health of your kids, too. “In young families, 

according to a study published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy, children exposed to pets in 

their first year are less likely to suffer from allergies and eczema as adults,” Garlinghouse says. 

5 Bonded for Life 

According to Garlinghouse, “Studies have indicated that young adults with deep 

bonds to a pet feel more connected in relationships and to their communities, and are 

more likely to take on leadership roles than those without pets.” 

6 No Judgement Zone 

Garlinghouse says pets don’t care how you look, how much money you make, or what 

kind of car you drive—they’re just happy to be with you and to have your attention. “A good 

portion of these feelings of higher self-esteem probably stem from that. It’s hard not to feel 

better about yourself when your dog thinks you’re terrific just the way you are,” she says. 

7 Creature Comforts 

And it’s not just dogs that help our well-being. “A lot of these benefits come from 

caring for almost any pet,” Garlinghouse says. “In one study, stressed adults decreased 

their anxiety levels when they stroked a rabbit or a turtle but not when they handled a 

toy rabbit or turtle.” 

8 In Sickness and in Health 

Facility dogs Henry, Penny, Marty, Feather, and Glimmer are graduates of Canine 

Companions for Independence who, along with child life specialists at Sutter Children’s 

Center, help make life in the hospital a little less stressful by providing joy and comfort 

to pediatric patients and their families. [Studies show that] pain reduction is four times 

greater in children undergoing animal-assisted therapy compared to those relaxing for 15 

minutes,” says Amy Medovoy, child life coordinator at Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento. 

“Patients feel less lonely, less depressed, and enjoy the change in routine. For inpatient 

adolescents, the presence of a dog on the unit improve outcomes by redefining the inpatient 

environment and providing unconditional acceptance.” 

9 Mood Booster 

Forming an attachment to animals is a combination of both biological and social needs. 

“Those endorphins released when we have a positive interaction with an animal just makes 

you feel good,” Garlinghouse says. “No matter how rotten your day has been, no matter how 

judged or criticized you might feel from people around you, no matter how lonely or isolated 

you might be feeling, it’s a great feeling to come through the door and know your pets are always 

delighted to see you and think you’re absolutely wonderful.”

There was no missing the girls—four young ladies in floating gowns, looking 

like fairy tale princesses waiting to be whisked to a ball. Sisters Sydney, 

Emma, and Kenna Warney, along with Ainseley Kay, had dressed up to 

talk about Rainbow Girls, a nonprofit service organization for young 

women ages 11-20. The formal attire is standard at many Rainbow 

events, including meetings, a requirement the girls say they like. 

Rainbow—officially the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls—was founded in 

1922 to foster self-confidence and leadership skills in girls via service to their community. 

Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, actress Lily Tomlin, and former Senator Olympia Snowe 

have all been members. 

The Folsom-based Natoma Assembly, to which the Warney sisters and Kay belong, is 

the largest chapter in California with 26 members. Though originally created for daughters 

of Masons, the organization now welcomes young women of all backgrounds and beliefs. 

“Service is the cornerstone of Rainbow,” says Katy Warney, who, along with Suzanne Kay, 

accompanied their daughters. “I love the service we provide. Kids nowadays don’t have

Rainbow Girls volunteer at both state 

and local levels. Each year, California 

Rainbow chooses one nonprofit that all 

assemblies fund-raise to support. Last year, 

which concluded in April, the members 

statewide contributed more than $60,000 

to Families Forward, a Southern California 

organization that helps empower families 

who are homeless or at risk of becoming 

homeless. Locally, the Natoma Assembly 

performs an exhausting schedule of 

activities—a partial list that includes 

mulching at Folsom High School for 

Community Service Day; raising money 

and collecting toys for Shriners Hospitals 

for Children; marching in the Folsom 

Veterans Day Parade and cooking breakfast 

afterward at the local Masonic lodge; 

preparing monthly dinners at the lodge; 

helping clean creeks; filling hundreds of 

prize eggs at the Folsom Eggstravaganza; 

and running craft booths at local events. 

Throughout their community 

service, Rainbow Girls are being trained 

in leadership and self-confidence. To 

that end, the girls run their meetings, 

progressing through officers with such 

titles as Faith, Hope, Charity, and—in 

place of president—Worthy Advisor. Each 

group also has a Mother Advisor and 

adult advisory board who mentors and 

coaches the girls, providing guidance and 

support as they plan and execute projects 

like membership events, charitable fundraisers, 

and social activities. 

Faith, hope, and charity are also 

among the list of values Rainbow teaches. 

Others include love, the beauty of nature, 

patriotism, fidelity, and service. To help 

build confidence and self-respect, the 

group offers public speaking opportunities, 

leadership training, and scholarships to 

its members. The girls eagerly added a 

few benefits of their own. “I would never 

have met one of my best friends if I didn’t 

have Rainbow,” Ainseley says, indicating 

Sydney, who added that she liked “the 

ability to serve our community and

Acupuncture has been used in China for thousands 

of years to promote healing. The process involves 

inserting tiny needles into certain points of the 

body known as acupoints—which can be tied to 

muscle groups, nerve bundles, blood vessels, and 

even organs or larger body systems—to enhance 

blood and nervous system circulation, thereby 

stimulating the release of anti-inflammatory and 

pain-relieving hormones, which encourages the body to correct imbalances and help 

heal itself. 

The use of acupuncture in pets is part of an Eastern medicine approach called 

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM). The insertion of the acupuncture 

needles is virtually painless for animals, and many owners find their pets become 

relaxed or even sleepy when the needles are in place. However, some human 

acupuncture patients have noted feelings such as tingling or numbness during 

treatments, so animals may show small amounts of discomfort from these new 

sensations during initial treatments. Some of the issues that can be treated and 

managed with TCVM include: 

• Musculoskeletal conditions 

• Neurological disorders 

• Respiratory disorders 

Unlike some medical treatments, there’s a very low risk of 

side effects from TCVM; however, acupuncture should always be 

performed by a certified veterinary acupuncturist.

Dogs are susceptible to heat-related 

injuries just like humans, which is why 

we need to be aware of the indicators of 

overheating including excessive panting 

or difficulty breathing, increased heart or 

respiratory rate, drooling, glazed eyes, and 

lethargy or wobbly feet when standing. 

Here are some preventative measures you 

can take to keep your pets safe during the 

hot summer months. 

»» 

Always have fresh clean water ready for 

Fido. Dogs can get dehydrated quickly if 

they’re in the heat for too long. 

»» 

Make sure they have plenty of shade if 

left outside for the day. Bring your dog 

inside during extreme heat. 

»» 

Provide frequent breaks while playing 

hard or if exposed to hot temps for 

longer periods of time. 

»» 

Never leave a dog in a hot vehicle. 

Consider putting a note on the 

dashboard to remind you that your dog 

is in the car so you won’t forget to take 

them out. 

»» 

Dogs with pushed-in faces or shorter 

muzzles have a harder time breathing 

and therefore have a harder time 

cooling themselves down; watch extra 

closely for signs of heat exhaustion. 

»» 

Dogs sweat but not much—they mainly 

sweat from their pads. Most of their 

heat is released by panting and if they 

breathe very hot air they have difficulty 

cooling down. Note: Dogs that are lower 

to the ground tend to heat up more 

quickly from the radiant heat. 

»» 

Dogs’ paws a can be sensitive to hot 

surfaces. Asphalt tends to get the 

hottest, so if you see your dog “tap 

dancing” their paws are hot. Get them 

moving or get under the shade. Try to 

exercise them in the earlier hours of the 

day. 

»» 

Look for a dog-approved sunscreen 

that’s usually for their noses. 

»» 

It is not recommended to shave dogs 

since their fur protects them from the 

UV rays.

include running the Boston Marathon

Sacramento Running Association’s 2017 

Community Runner of the Year Award. 

After he was struck by a car while 

riding his tandem bicycle and seriously 

injured, Hunter’s middle daughter 

encouraged him to get a guide dog.

that Max makes so many [patients] 

smile. It really makes their day to 

have someone to hug,” Goossen

Officer Gage Lawley and Eros 

Don’t let Eros’ dashing good looks deceive you. This fierce K-9 officer on the Roseville Police 

Department loves tug-of-war, chicken, and justice. The handsome sable colored dog is originally 

from Germany and was 

sent to Canada where he was 

unfortunately injured. 

In August 2010, Eros was 

transferred to California and 

paired with his owner, Officer 

Gage Lawley, where he 

underwent what is equivilent 

to the police academy for 

dogs—a 12-week intensive 

training session. In addition 

to initial certification, each 

K-9 team trains two days a 

month with other K-9 units 

in the region to stay sharp in 

the field. 

“Eros is always wanting to 

work,” Officer Lawley says, 

and he appreciates that. 

The canine is cross-trained 

in patrol and narcotics 

detection, which means 

he works on a patrol team 

and also detects narcotics 

in buildings, vehicles, open 

areas, and packages. Eros’ 

position was funded by drug 

asset forfeiture funds, so the 

dog is giving back by being

time, Eros is a huge hit. 

Officer Lawley says what 

makes him most proud of 

the German shepherd is his 

ability “to be a ferocious, 

hardworking K-9, then go to 

a demonstration at a school 

and become a loving, regular 

dog.” Because of this, the dog 

is a reliable worker and even 

better pet. Officer Lawley could not have asked for a more 

perfect fit to his K-9 team.

A caring home for rescued 

domestic and wild animals. See 

mountain lions, coyotes, bears,

out the new Barnyard Experience, 

too—an abode for the sanctuary’s 

horses, miniature donkeys, and 

zebu. The zoo is open Tuesday-

Senior LIFE Center of Loomis was established as an activity of

Shrimp and Polenta 

Polished Plates with Pizzazz

Longtime Folsom favorite Back Bistro recently made the 

leap from its cozy, neighborhood location to the glitz 

and glamour of a 4,500-square-foot destination at the 

Palladio. Featuring an impressive craft cocktail bar 

that commands attention as soon as you enter, the 

restaurant also serves up the same quality fare that 

made loyal fans of its original customers—with a few 

new dishes and a boutique wine selection. 

I started with the sautéed artichoke hearts, whose 

presentation was a bit of a surprise, as it’s served “bruschetta style”— 

topped with olives, fennel confit, capers, roasted garlic, and the namesake 

artichoke hearts over grilled French bread. The real plot twist, however, 

was the white wine cream sauce the sliced baguettes were perched atop—a 

very creative and tasty application, indeed. 

Next came the warm arugula salad with pancetta, quinoa, red onions, 

toasted almonds, and shaved Parmesan. The balsamic dressing was applied 

sparingly (thank you), and the tasty, texture-rich toppings were the perfect 

pairing to the peppery baby arugula. 

As I ordered “steak and potatoes,” the server asked if I wanted to “surf 

and turf” it. He barely got the words out of his mouth when I hit him with 

a resounding “yes!” The resulting plate featured grilled steak over fondant 

potatoes and garlic aioli with a skewered shrimp crowning each of the three 

brochettes. Not surprisingly, this is one of Back Bistro's most requested small 

plates, and if you’re just looking for a quick bite, there’s plenty of protein here 

to hold you over. 

Warm Arugula Salad 

Between this and the other two starters, I was content, but all willpower went 

out the window when I saw the bistro’s version of shrimp and grits. Ever since ordering and falling in 

love with the dish at Luke in New Orleans, I’m tempted to try it everywhere. Whether it’s breakfast 

(with a poached egg), lunch, or dinner, I’m a devout fan, and Back’s entry hit the mark. The option here 

featured an Italian twist (creamy polenta in lieu of grits) but still boasted some of the NOLA traditions 

(andouille sausage and roasted tomatoes). 

I’m sure I didn’t need dessert at this point, but when a menu offers “The Famous Triple Pot de Crème,” 

how can you not find out if it lives up to its nom de plume? After all, it’s French pudding…right? You’ll 

have to stop by Back Bistro and see for yourself (spoiler alert: My “pot” was spotless).

Falafel Corner // For just a short time now, Falafel Corner has been serving Folsom residents mouthwatering, made-from-scratch 

Mediterranean dishes with a side of friendly service. Upon entering, you’re instantly hit with the enticing aromas of spices and fresh local veggies. 

Thanks to the warm atmosphere and amiable employees, I instantly felt at ease and ready to dive into their intriguing menu. The eatery is unique 

in that they cater to every customer’s needs—from offering high-quality zabiha ingredients (including premium, corn-fed Harris Ranch beef) to 

classic and familiar dishes (burgers, curly fries, and quesadillas), as well as authentic Mediterranean cuisine that runs the gamut from gyros to 

their namesake falafel. For my inaugural visit, I tried the Combo Platter and was instantly transported to foodie heaven. The plate came with a 

heavy helping of protein (perfectly seasoned chicken and tender, rotisserie cooked then grilled lamb/beef) as well as buttery rice pilaf, a fresh 

Greek salata, house-made hummus, pita bread, and tangy tzatziki sauce that had my mouth burning but begging for more. The sheer amount of 

food wasn't the only thing that was impressive about this dish, however; the way that all the flavors—from the rice, meat, and the sauces—melded 

together was truly an experience that everyone needs to understand firsthand. Now that I know what Falafel Corner is capable of, I’ll be back to

dairy-based gelato (ice cream’s richer, silkier sister) is hard to resist, the 

lactose-intolerant side of me typically selects a scoop, or three, of their 

pink grapefruit lemonade and raspberry rosé Sorbetto (flavors change 

seasonally) in a house-made Waffle Cone. Some might scream for ice

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? 

We specialize in providing award-winning frozen drinks, both 

alcoholic and non-alcoholic, to any and all events—from weddings 

and corporate parties to golf tournaments, fund-raisers, graduations, 

and more. My amazing wife found the business, since she loves 

margaritas. 

How are you involved with both the community and your 

customer? 

I’ve coached youth basketball for years and love watching a kid’s 

confidence blossom like a flower. I also enjoy making people happy… 

and margaritas seem to do just that! 

What life accomplishments are you most proud of? 

Being married to an amazing woman for 26 years and raising four 

great kids. 

What’s your hidden talent? 

Singing, but it’s really hidden. 

What’s your biggest job perk? 

Making people’s parties or events special. 

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? 

Ruchi Indian Cuisine. 

What’s your favorite childhood memory? 

Smelling the smoke near a warm fire, fishing, and eating s’mores 

while camping.

Ensuring clients are satisfied with your service by going above and 

beyond to give them the best experience and product possible, and 

making people smile and connecting with them. Life is short—we all 

should sit around a warm fire and sip on a margarita! 

Describe your business. 

Tennis With Cole specializes in private and group tennis instruction for 

adults and children. All skill levels are welcome, especially beginners. 

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from 

the experience? 

Working on a farm. I learned hard work builds character and gained 

an appreciation for hard-earned money. 

How are you involved with both the community and your 

customer? 

I offer after-school lessons for children and work closely with 

homeschooled children. I also offer risk-free trial lessons and free 

assessments for all students. 

Why is your staff the best in the business? 

I’m passionate about helping people improve and offer a selection of 

programs that fit any budget. 

What life accomplishments are you most proud of? 

Starting my own business and seeing it succeed; also, playing tennis 

in college. 

Where do you go when the going gets tough? 

I take a vacation to Hawaii every year. 

What’s your favorite local event that you go to? 

Sacramento Kings games. 

If you could be in any other profession, what would it be? 

A professional golfer.

Doing the right thing for your students or making it right, even if it’s a 

tough decision.
