Working with Everything Music!
Anyone interested in being a part of Everything Music is welcome
to call 336.272.5122. We are always looking for Writers,
Photographers and Sales. If you like music and enjoy seeing
live bands and artist and have the desire to write or even need
an internship for a class this is a great way to get your work
out there and get noticed.
Owners Thoughts
I don't really like going out in cold or wet weather but this night was a little different.
We wanted to get a few shots of our cover story as they performed together at the
221 lounge in Greensboro. It was a Saturday night, supposably spring time, but yet
they were calling for rain and snow showers so I grabbed my coat and layered up as
I was always taught in scouts, and ventured out. First, Roy Roberts full band came
on the stage and performed a few songs which I would have enjoyed all night but
then came Roy whom I had never seen before with his, "take control of the stage" and
comfortable ease he has. After a few more songs he brings up Nathan, a Blues boy, who knows how to
rock! It almost seemed as if they had been playing together for years, but only to know this was the fi rst
time on the same stage with not even a warm up. Personally I could never do that but I guess that's why
I'm in the audience. As for the next few songs they did together I was immensely impressed with all three
parts of the show and I highly recommend fi nding their next shows.
Top Billing with Underground Rich
J White
Underneath the Bathing Ape is Josh White, a very
amusing, yet, sometimes facetious man that was
the life of the party in adolescent years. Inevitably,
the music industry was a constant hunger in life. Being
a provider and a hustler administered the opportunity for
Josh to incline to J White and eventually taking his East
coast music closer to the entertainment
industry in California. Preceding
this time changing progress,
White was right here in Greensboro
performing for the first time at Club
Rain in 2008 with DJ E Sudd. His
secret to stumbling during a performance?
Easy. Freestyle. Go to
the next song. Mumble rap. Whatever.
The crowd does not know you
skipped a beat. Along the way of
managing his cousin Brandon D,
his musical ear picked up the tunes
of Tigo B, Gav Beats, Lil Malik, and Rico Barrino. Of
course, there is a different melody when it comes to the music
between the two coasts, however, the grind is stronger
here in North Carolina than California. “No one believes in
your craft in NC unless you are already successful,”
White claims. Working out of other studios and constantly
dealing with people’s demeanor ultimately matured
into the development of Underground Rich Studios,
home of head engineer Laphelle. “People were
overcharging me just because they think I’m rich. ‘Cause
I look so good on the internet.”
With his hectic schedule there
seems to be no balance when music
is life. White attended classes
at UCLA with mentions of their
great music department. “In the
beginning it may feel like you
are on a sh*t mountain but, sh*t
stinks and can be lifted up off of
you. When it seems the world is
over, create a vision board and
work on it.” If there is one adjustment
White could make to music
it would be to alter the amount of people that are in it
and not taking it serious. His future endeavors involve
hopes of working with OJ the Juice Man, Keyglock, and
anybody making noise right now.
A Music School
for All
Highland North Music
A
long Battleground Avenue, sits a renovated
home dedicated to the love of music. If you’re
in need of a landmark, just look for the huge
guitar planted on the face of the building. Inside, a diverse
in style and seasoned staff dedicate themselves to
keeping music alive. Together they form Highland North
Music, an afterschool school of arts. “Sadly, music arts in
schools are diminishing. When students are involved in
drama and music it’s rewarding. I wish there was a school
like this when I was starting out,” says voice teacher Iris
Crowe. While attending Highland North Music, students
not only focus on voice and instrumentation, they
also learn teamwork, interaction, diplomacy and when to
speak up. Founder, Donnie Wright recalls the day it all
came together. “I was approached by Suzanne Vandergrift,
Founder of Greensboro Performing Arts. She asked
me to teach guitar. My plate has always been full but
her persistence paid off,” he says. Within two years he
had thirty kids under his wing. Some years later, Vandergrift
approached again. This time, she had something
different in mind. “I had so many kids that they were
blocking the hallway. Suzanne suggested I take off and
do my own thing. My wife and I prayed about it. Within a
month, I formed Highland North Music. It was a business
I ran out of my home for nearly seven years providing
piano, bass guitar and vocal training. ”Running a business
out of his home had its challenges. He sought out
a new location for his adventure. Dusting off a building
that sat empty for nearly a decade, he mixed his ambition
and finances and created a sort of musical refuge. “Parents
are grateful. It’s a safe place that keeps their kids
out of the streets,” he says. Though he states the program
is not rigid, there are expectations. When it came to the
music, Donnie admits he was adamant about the selections.
“No secular music was allowed when we started.
Now, we listen to opinions and suggestions.” Though
he’s bent the rules to some degree, there’s one area
NOTE STRINGS ATTACHED
where he’s not flexible. “The music must be postive.” In
addition, nothing comes easy for students as they earn the
right to be here. “We give assessment tests. You have to
pass these tests in order to make it to the casting calls
where you find out details about upcoming shows. Then,
there are contracts. They have until the first band meeting
to sign,” says Donnie. Wait! Contracts? Bands? Sounds
like they’re prepping music professionals. Maybe that’s
also why their clients are using premiere equipment during
their rehearsals twice a week. The recording studio is surrounded
by high tech gadgets such as personal IEMs (inear
monitors). Tucked in a corner, a dazzling percussion
set awaits an eager student. “We haven’t skimped on anything,”
he says. It is quite evident that the mastermind(s)
behind this project know exactly what it takes to produce
quality sound. There’s a lot invested yet the return is much
greater. “We’re building confidence and bringing youth
out of their shells. A 14-year-olds’self-esteem is very important.
Music is a universal tool that helps people deal
with many things,” says Iris. As the kids grew older and
went off to college, programs were redesigned catering to
smaller kids. Youth showcases feature students ranging
from ages 6-17 and help conquer stage fright. Recalling
a student that entered at age 8 and now in college leading
worship, Highland North Music is witnessing the fruits
of their labor. Though much has been accomplished, the
dreams continue. When it pertains to the business, Donnie
mentions, “I’d love to have a premiere learn and perform
school throughout the state of North Carolina. ”With the
students in mind he says, “I would love to have our musicians
in on community events. We will play for free. ”As
full-sized bands no longer cover the fields at half-time
nor fill the bleachers during pep rallies, we’re witnessing
somewhat of a musical crisis. Highland North Music
is setting the standard of what many have longed to see
return. It’s reassuring to find genuine interest in keeping
hope and rhythm alive.
Article by Brad Cardille • Photos by Bill Clubb
I'm sitting across from Nathan Pope in his parents' home in
rural southern Alamance County. In his room, we are surrounded
by drums, keyboards and recording equipment.
His mainstay guitars hanging from the walls. Nate is 15
years old, and if you haven't heard, he's kind of a big deal.
At 2 years old Nathan's "Teddy Bear" was a small red
First Act Discovery guitar with a yellow flame decor, a gift from
COVERING
his Grandmother. "I carried it everywhere I went, even Disney
World" he says. Listening to Kenny Wayne Shepherd while riding
on the lawnmower with his mother and practicing in the
backseat of the car on the long rides to and from home, he began
the journey of honing his craft. By the time he was 6
years old, Nathan was picking out melodies and learning songs
on his own. At age 10, he began appearing on local stages.
Now at the ripe age of 15, he's a staple on the Blues Festival Circuit.
He's represented the Triangle Blues Society, played in Memphis
(in front of Morgan Freeman). Nathan has just recently completed
his first CD. titled "I'm Not Alone." The collections' lyrics are set
deeply in his unwavering faith and the musical work on the guitar
is put down squarely on some of his biggest, more modern influences,
Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Gary Moore.
"They're not just dreams, they're plans,
there is no plan B"
"At this age (15) I already know the direction I want to go" He
tells me. "They're not just dreams, they're plans, there is no
plan B" he says. As we discuss further, a more tangible albeit
lofty goal comes to light and inspired by Joe Bonamassa's
live performances at The Hall "My main goal is to play
The Royal Albert Hall, that's where I want to play" he says.
Impossible? Certainly not. Improbable? Maybe. If you mean improbable
like a 2 year old would literally embrace a guitar constantly, picking
up songs and melodies on his own at 6, playing gigs at 10 and becoming
a fixture and standout on the scene? Writing and releasing his own
music at 15? Well Then, it seems we may want to rethink those odds
When asked about his approach to song writing, Nathan tells
me, "I stay away from the typical 'Baby, why did you leave me?'
kind of stuff." Rather, Nathan's approach to lyrical topics and
phrasings are more related to human emotions as evident from
his time spent in church and a deep seated faith. "I still go back
to the older blues music and how it makes me feel when it comes
to composing and creating structure in my music" he says.
"I'm a guitarist yes, but I'm really a blues guitarist" he tells me.
When pressed for clarification, it was clear that Nate wanted to be
understood, stating "All the enthusiasts about music out there don't
be completely triggered about what I'm going to say. Blues is probably
as real a type of music as you can get. Because it's emotion, true
playing, no fake instruments, and souls being poured into a song.
That's how I've always seen it" he continues. "It's honestly about
the most pure, original and realistic music as you can possibly get."
Nathan is keenly aware of the torch he is holding. With a firm
grasp of blues and gospel music from the previous generations and
a youthful, brazenly confident approach to his own music, Nathan
journeys towards his own legacy of being a beacon of influence
in blues based music for his up and coming generation.
My first introduction and greeting with Nathan occurred at the 221
Lounge in Greensboro. He was there to join in and play a few songs
with Roy Roberts. Now, if you hadn't heard of Nathan Pope before
this article, it's understandable as he has but just started to chart his
course. But Roy Roberts? Admittedly, I knew of Roy Roberts...or
I thought I knew of Roy Roberts. That is until I sat down with him
at his studio in Greensboro. It felt like 10 minutes but it was every
bit of two hours, and even then I had to tear myself away back home.
THE BLUES
As I stepped out of the car by the side of the house and approached
the studio building in the back, I felt almost like a
trespasser. I climbed the stairs, the door is open, and a gentlemen
sitting by the door greets me as he rises to leave me alone
with Roy who is sitting across the room a bit. Instantly, I felt
the presence of a man who has lived much more than I have. I
can't quite explain it, but I admired him before he even started
talking. As a musician myself and a lover of all things music, I
knew that I was about to have the privilege of experiencing.
Roy quickly wiped away any feelings of intrusion I may
have had before and I was grateful to settle in. The studio
was filled with old school equipment and memorabilia
on the walls from six decades of making music. I asked him
if we could start at the beginning and we most certainly did.
Roy grew up in a small town called Livingston, Tennessee, just east
of Nashville. As a boy, he would listen to the radio stations broadcasting
from Nashville, mostly country music, but blues and R&B as
well. Inspired, he saved up his money and bought his first guitar at age
14 from Sears. He knew then that farm life was not to be his future.
At age 18, Roy left Tennessee and came to Greensboro to live with
his Uncle. While out cruising with his friends, they stopped in at
a club where Jerry Butler was performing. Being impressed at his
playing and also, the attention received from the ladies, convinced
Roy to become a professional musician. He quickly became a regular
in the circuit playing with the likes of Guitar Kimbers' Untouchables.
It only took one chance for Roy when Solomon Burke asked
him to sit in as Bass player on a gig. Soon, Roy had taken over guitar
duties while touring with Solomon Burke and a career was born.
That initial opportunity spawned other touring gigs with legendary
performers such as Eddie Floyd, Stevie Wonder and Otis
Redding to name just a few. He formed The Roy Roberts Experience
and toured the regional circuit, as well as up and down the
southeast coast. Roy cut many records through the sixties and
seventies. Then came the Disco era, the majority of shows and
events quickly disappeared for Blues and R&B artists, including
Roy Roberts." I played about 300 different clubs nationally and
in 30 days they all started cancelling our shows." Roy says. He
reaches out to an old friend, Arthur Smith of "The Arthur Smith
Show" and "Guitar Boogie" fame that predates Chuck Berry by
a decade. Arthur and Roy record a couple of songs together and
some bookings in the Madison - Mayodan area. Roy's country music
career took off. Roy Roberts and the Chocolate Cowboys, Roy
tells me "That was the hottest thing I did in terms of gigs and making
money, we would be booked a year in advance." After a near
decade long run, his good friend and fellow country artist O.B.
mine." It sparked Roy back to performing and the blues music
he had started with, so many years before. He moved back to
Greensboro, formed a band and he hasn't looked back since.
April 7th, 2018 at the 221 Lounge in downtown Greensboro.
I know this place well. The old Flat Iron. Worked here, played
here, late nights here. Memories...good and bad. But tonight
"I heard it and thought, he's got a
style kind of like mine"
something exceptional, a 15 year old prodigy joins a Blues
legend on stage. Nathan comes on stage as Roy and his band
The Quest have already warmed up the crowd. They work their
way through several blues standards and stretch them out a bit
for Nathan and the band. It sounds great! The beautiful thing
about blues music is it has a familiarity to its artists that allows
a 15 year old to connect spontaneously with a legend in his 70s
seamlessly. Nathan's control of tone is remarkable on his Gold
top Les Paul, which practically hides his body from the crowd
due to his stature. But his playing is urgent and aggressive, as
it should be, at this stage of his career. Roy Roberts is unwavering,
cool and mesmerizing on stage. Guess you get that skill
set after 6 decades of performing and it shows. But something
even larger is happening here. This vein of music we call "The
Blues," which permeates inside every genre of modern music today,
has two of its finest representatives meeting at a crossroads
tonight. A crossroads of generations. One who has laid
the foundation of music and a legacy that never dies. So
that the other can build "The Blues" into the music of the
next generation and start the next chapter of roots music.
www.royrobertsblues.com
"It's honestly about the most pure, original
McClinton passed away in Nashville in 1987. It devastated
him, Roy walked away from music in 1989 to take a break.
Roy spent his time working in his studio cutting Gospel music
for the next few years, until one day he hears an artist on
the radio. It was Robert Cray and his song "Phone Booth."
Roy says "I heard it and thought, he's got a style kind of like
The last time I was at Shiners, it was snowing! So much has
changed in just a few weeks! The venue on this night is warm,
warm and electric. You can feel the energy hit you when you
walk in. It’s finally the evening for The Mack Media presentation
of Sun of Nile/Skulls and Whiskey/Prowess and many of the local
rock community are out in support. The entire Desired Redemption band
is out as they so often are, as fans and in support, Sandra Olivey Flowers,
band Mom of Trailer Park Orchestra has made her way out on a beautiful
night, and Christy Johnson and Scott LaFlame of Drea Killer all join what
is a very good turn out for a night of loud energetic homegrown rock and
roll! I am greeted upon arrival by Holly Mack, the head honcho and CEE
(Chief Executive of Everything) of Mack Media. Producing
a show of this size is a lot of work, but things
are running as smooth as butter on silk! It’s so much
work I have to ask Ms Mack (Say that five times
fast!) what is the payoff? “I’m just a girl that loves to
throw parties!” she answers, “I also enjoy working
as a concierge to the local music scene!” We have
a lot in common! Sun of Nile hits the stage around
nine, (That is real time not rock o’clock which usually
runs an hour later, sort of like day light savings
time) and they hit it hard! The crowd even at this
early hour is up and enthused! I’m drawn to the stage by the performance
as well. This band is fantastic! They are rockers, but even more than that,
there is something familiar about them. Then it hits me, they remind me
of Soapbox Arson, one of my all time favorite local bands that broke up
about a year ago. Then it finally hits me, (Yes, I’m an old beer addled idiot!)
that lead singer/front man is Josh Smith that headed Soapbox Arson.
Josh Smith is a solid performer that displays more emotion with subtle
nuances like head tilts and eye rolls than others do with grand gestures.
On stage he is an animated force and character, almost of the
Prowess Mack Attack
Alice Cooper variety, but less stated. Throw in a multi level vocal
attack with a solid band and you’ve got yourself some damn fine audio entertainment
right there! Sun of Nile is over too soon, but this is a three level Mack
Attack and next up is Skulls and Whiskey. Centrally based out of Randleman,
Skulls and Whiskey is a Viking Skull tribute band. Viking Skull is a hard
rocking outfit from England that is obscure enough to allow S&W to cover
the songs and still make it seem wild and fresh. S&W are perennial favorites
with a nice following and I do profess to being a member of the Skull army!
When they begin the song Double or Quits, I can know longer contain my
youthful (?) enthusiasm and rush the stage to jam with the band. After two
rocking boisterous sets, I should be exhausted and thinking of taking my old
ass home, but Prowess is setting up. As much as I enjoy(ed)
the Sun of Nile and Skulls and Whiskey, Prowess is the
band I came to see, and specifically their lead singer/frontman
Dalton Bowes. The first show I witnessed upon diving
into the local rock scene after years away, was opened by a
group of young, wild as hell, kids in a band called Zestrah.
They were uncontainable and energetic, spinning original
rock tunes with the flavor of old school acts like Guns and
Roses and Aerosmith. Dalton was the lead singer of that
entourage of energy. That was about four years ago and I
Michael Cooper
am very excited to see how he’s matured on stage. He did
not disappoint! Dalton and the boys pounded out a barrage of ramped up rock
originals and choice crowd pleasing covers to everyone’s sonic delight. Prowess
looks like a hard rock band and, more importantly, sounds like a hard rock
band! Once again I find myself rocking at the stage. Three bands and all three
drew me to the stage. The hot dogs out front fueled the crowd and the Shiners
wait staff kept us (ahem) hydrated! Mack Media has scored a solid hit with
their production and I look so forward to the next endeavor. I give the entire
evening four flashpods! Uncle Mike is a long time live music enthusiast and
Blac Lui Kang
#TWOLETTA’
rom walking the elongated hallways of Southern Guilford and faddish Ben L Smith,
when music wasn’t really a “thing” for schoolboy Blac, it was still pumping through
his blood. Growing up with a grandfather that played the guitar and a father that
was a DJ, itit it was destined for the schoolboy to mature into Blac Lui Kang…the maker
of wonderful music. With musical influences from an era of prodigious artists such as Nas,
Biggie, and Jay Z to collaborating with names such as Cap 1, Travis Porter, and Bank Roll,
I would agree that it is well past “Due Season” for Blac Lui Kang. Recording his first song
some 14 years ago titled “Long Story” would place his first note on his life staff of music.
From that point, it began to fill. It filled with more notes to the tune of working with producers
such as Laphelle and P80. Air play from radio stations here in Greensboro as well as Greenville,
Rocky Mount, and Richmond, Va. filled in the spaces. While on his passage of building
bridges and trying not to burn them, there were lessons learned. Being an artist, you are your
own business and with starting out in any business, expenses may rely solely on you. Blac
not only speaks passionately on dollars effecting home but, also the difficulty on moving as a
group. Something he has been quoted on saying he would never do again. Although he has had
to remove some familiar faces there has been no love lost. “People move in different directions
for different reasons.” The movement of the group, nevertheless, had nothing to do with
the transformation of Blacboi to Blac Lui Kang. That modification came through in the form
of trademark infringement. Apparently, there was another gentleman using the name. Lui Kang had it copywritten. Blacboi had it
trademarked. “Learn the difference,” he says. Everything has since then been moved under the name of Blac Lui Kang (which was
the name of his project at the time) including the new song that’s been flowing through speakers, “All Good.” A question I like to
ask artist towards the end of the interview is why do they feel, if they feel, it’s easier to get love away from home. “Half of these
cats came up with you. Went to school with you. Half of these cats didn’t like you from the start. Now, to see you blossom and
they still stuck….yea, I wouldn’t like it either. I’m always going to be me. I’m not really worried about what people think.” With
that being said, his upcoming events includes the dropping of both his EP “Due Season,” which will have around eight tracks and a
TWOLETTA’ mixtape. If you don’t already follow him, now would be the time.
Genre
Rock/METAL
T
he local music scene as of late has exploded
with female fronted rock/metal bands. A Light
Divided has been leading that charge since
2007, and only one year later vocalist Jaycee Clark won
the coveted Carolina Music Awards: Rock Female of
the Year. Now Jaycee and the band are inviting you to
Choose Your Own Adventure! As a matter of fact after
a very successful Gofundme campaign that swelled the
production coffers to over three thousand dollars, ALD’s
next CD audio compilation: Choose Your Next Adventure
will soon be in our grubby little hands (So to speak!)
and tickling (Or maybe kicking!) our ear drums by this
September! Choose Your own Adventure joins past offerings
of the EP: For the Sake of Change and previous
CDs, Ransom and Mirrors in the bands discography,
ALD has a strong online presence that covers all the music
sites, Facebook, and a web site (They are currently
trying to learn smoke signals!), but the best way to pick
them up is at a show to go along with one of the many
designer shirts or other things you may want to pick up
at the merch table and meet the band in person. While
they are fantastic on stage they are approachable and
have had all their shots! ALD is a road and stage tested
band, but while no extensive Summer tours are in the
works for 2018, when the new music drops The Highway
(My favorite A Light Divided Song, btw!) beckons!
ALD is no stranger to the road and last years Long Live
the Flame tour may have started at Greensboro’s Blind
Tiger, but it criss crossed the country creating many
“Lightheads" along the way before culminating in Fort
Smith Arkansas. While I thought the members of the
band dwelled in The Light Cave and played whenever
the world cried out for some good rock, I was reassured
the band members held full time jobs, though drummer
Adam Smith admits they wouldn’t mind hitting the road
someday and keep the party going full time. While we
anxiously await the new CD, lead singer and crimson
tressed dynamo Jaycee Clark promises local fans will
be offered choice tidbits of the new musical effort in the
form of a new music video (To add to their already extensive
library of video offerings on You Tube like, Save
The Cheerleader, Save the World, and I Am The One
Who Knocks) and a showat Shiners on June 30th with
Eden’s Kiss, Venus Invictus, Raimee, and Charlotte’s
Reason Define. Jaycee and Adam are tight lipped about
what new music will be revealed, but seem to tease some
new stuff may “slip” out! A Light Divided comes across
as tight, loud, and energetic, like a sonic super team. Jaycee
commands the stage like a tornado in the middle of
a symphonic hurricane. The stage finesse of this band is
a wicked wonder to behold! Hard rock and metal fans
are drawn to the stage like mesmerized moths and may
leave drained, but never disappointed. Hailing from
Winston Salem, but embraced by the entire triad, Jaycee
and Adam are joined by Mike Underwood on bass, Doug
Weichbrodt on guitar and vocals, and Colt Crevar also
on guitar and vocals, to round out the line-up. A Light
Divided will be working furiously behind the scenes this
Summer, but they urge you, now and forever to: Choose
Your Own Adventure!
