Aug<strong>us</strong>t 19, 2012<br />

Twentieth Sunday <strong>in</strong> Ord<strong>in</strong>ary Time<br />

Some th<strong>in</strong>gs about human nature don't change,<br />

even over <strong>the</strong> course of centuries. When we<br />

celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we<br />

celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In<br />

<strong>to</strong>day's first read<strong>in</strong>g, Lady Wisdom is sett<strong>in</strong>g a feast,<br />

a sign of celebrat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> covenant that Israel has<br />

with God. Israel's central remembrance of its sav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Exod<strong>us</strong> covenant is <strong>the</strong> Passover meal. So it is<br />

natural--<strong>and</strong> not co<strong>in</strong>cidental--that <strong>the</strong> Christian<br />

celebration of <strong>the</strong> new covenant sealed by <strong>the</strong> blood<br />

of Christ on <strong>the</strong> cross happens at a meal, our<br />

Eucharist, offered first by Jes<strong>us</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context of<br />

Passover remembrance. It is easy for <strong>us</strong>,<br />

sometimes, <strong>to</strong> forget <strong>the</strong> very long <strong>and</strong> rich religio<strong>us</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> human orig<strong>in</strong>s of our eucharistic feast<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong><br />

bread <strong>and</strong> cup that are <strong>the</strong> Body <strong>and</strong> Blood of Jes<strong>us</strong>.<br />

Today, <strong>and</strong> for <strong>the</strong> next few Sundays that we hear<br />

<strong>the</strong> "Bread of Life" discourse from John, let <strong>us</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>to</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> lov<strong>in</strong>g covenant that God makes with <strong>us</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> be filled with great joy at this marvelo<strong>us</strong> feast<br />

we have come <strong>to</strong> attend!<br />

Eucharistic Adoration <strong>and</strong> Benediction for Vocations<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> summer, <strong>the</strong> 30 m<strong>in</strong>utes of Eucharistic Adoration <strong>and</strong> Benediction for Vocations prior <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> 7:30<br />

PM Mass <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chot<strong>in</strong> Center was discont<strong>in</strong>ued. The Pas<strong>to</strong>ral Staff has decided not <strong>to</strong> resume this practice<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future.<br />

There are several reasons for this, both practical <strong>and</strong> liturgical (philosophical), presented here for <strong>your</strong><br />

consideration:<br />

1) Hav<strong>in</strong>g only 30 m<strong>in</strong>utes of Adoration on <strong>the</strong> altar while prepar<strong>in</strong>g for a Mass may weaken <strong>the</strong><br />

creation of a space of silence which is so important a sett<strong>in</strong>g for Eucharistic Adoration. When<br />

m<strong>us</strong>icians are practic<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> people are sett<strong>in</strong>g up for Mass, <strong>and</strong> people are ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> space<br />

where <strong>the</strong> Mass will take place – while <strong>the</strong> Blessed Sacrament is exposed - it can actually detract<br />

from <strong>the</strong> benefit that can be received from Adoration at ano<strong>the</strong>r time, one that is not so close <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

time of <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of Mass.<br />

2) The documents of <strong>the</strong> Church perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> Eucharistic Adoration, emphasize <strong>the</strong> connection of<br />

Adoration with <strong>the</strong> Mass, yet also disc<strong>us</strong>ses its dist<strong>in</strong>ctiveness. In <strong>the</strong> document Holy Communion<br />

<strong>and</strong> Worship of <strong>the</strong> Eucharist Outside of Mass, we read <strong>in</strong> Paragraph 82: “The plan of exposition<br />

should carefully avoid anyth<strong>in</strong>g which might somehow obscure <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal desire of Christ <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>stitut<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Eucharist, namely, <strong>to</strong> be with <strong>us</strong> as food, medic<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>and</strong> comfort.” Exposition right before<br />

<strong>the</strong> celebration of <strong>the</strong> Eucharist might be best conducted at ano<strong>the</strong>r time, perhaps after <strong>the</strong> Liturgy,<br />

but not right before.<br />

We will certa<strong>in</strong>ly make it a priority <strong>to</strong> have dedicated times of Eucharistic Adoration <strong>and</strong> Benediction for our<br />

parish community, such as dur<strong>in</strong>g celebrations of <strong>the</strong> Liturgy of <strong>the</strong> Hours, as well as dur<strong>in</strong>g Stations of <strong>the</strong><br />

Cross dur<strong>in</strong>g Lent. O<strong>the</strong>r special times will also be set for <strong>us</strong> <strong>to</strong> pray <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> this unique way. The<br />

Adoration Chapel is also available for our <strong>us</strong>e at any time. Let <strong>us</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> pray that <strong>the</strong> Lord will call many<br />

men <strong>and</strong> women <strong>to</strong> serve <strong>the</strong> Church’s needs!<br />

Sponsor Couples Marriage M<strong>in</strong>istry<br />

Our Lady of <strong>the</strong> Lake’s Sponsor Couple Program consists of married couples (married at least 3 years) who<br />

meet with engaged couples <strong>to</strong> guide <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> a better underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> sacrament <strong>and</strong> prepare <strong>the</strong>m for<br />

obstacles that <strong>the</strong>y may face as a married couple.<br />

The purpose of this program is <strong>to</strong> guide engaged couples <strong>to</strong> a better underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong>ir relationship with<br />

each o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> sacrament of marriage through disc<strong>us</strong>sions with a married couple. With divorce rates so<br />

high, our church tries <strong>to</strong> do what it can <strong>to</strong> give engaged couples a good start on a successful marriage. We<br />

<strong>us</strong>e At Home Marriage Preparation by Jan & Lloyd Tate - tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g will be provided. This program consists of<br />

5-7 meet<strong>in</strong>gs with an engaged couple <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sponsors’ home. The schedul<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong>se meet<strong>in</strong>gs is done by<br />

<strong>the</strong> couples <strong>in</strong>volved; <strong>the</strong>refore it is flexible. The program guides couples <strong>in</strong> disc<strong>us</strong>sion on vario<strong>us</strong> important<br />

<strong>to</strong>pics such as family of orig<strong>in</strong>, communication, f<strong>in</strong>ances, spirituality, family plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> more. One of <strong>the</strong><br />

most important parts of this m<strong>in</strong>istry is <strong>the</strong> shar<strong>in</strong>g of experiences by <strong>the</strong> sponsor couple. No marriage is<br />

perfect. Engaged couples need <strong>to</strong> know this. They need <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>ols <strong>to</strong> work through <strong>the</strong> difficulties. We try <strong>to</strong><br />

give <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>se <strong>to</strong>ols. Married couples <strong>in</strong> this m<strong>in</strong>istry often comment that <strong>the</strong>ir own marriages are enriched<br />

through this process.<br />

If you would like more <strong>in</strong>formation about this Marriage M<strong>in</strong>istry, please contact Beth Zima at 626-5671 x116.<br />

Call<strong>in</strong>g all Catechists...<br />

Shhhh. Listen! Are you be<strong>in</strong>g called? In a “low whisper,” God called Elijah. Your call may come as a question<br />

when register<strong>in</strong>g <strong>your</strong> children for formation classes at Church, “Are you able <strong>to</strong> <strong>help</strong>”? Maybe it will come as<br />

a stirr<strong>in</strong>g when you read <strong>your</strong> parish bullet<strong>in</strong>. Most often, God calls gently, nudg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>us</strong> a bit <strong>to</strong> draw our<br />

attention. Listen! Is God call<strong>in</strong>g you? At <strong>the</strong> end of his earthly m<strong>in</strong>istry, Jes<strong>us</strong> said: “Go, <strong>the</strong>refore, <strong>and</strong> make<br />

disciples of all nations, baptiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Son <strong>and</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit,<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> observe all that I have comm<strong>and</strong>ed you; <strong>and</strong> lo, I am with you always, <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> close of <strong>the</strong><br />

age.” — Mat<strong>the</strong>w 28:19-20<br />

Our Lady of <strong>the</strong> Lake Parish School of Religion is <strong>in</strong> need of Catechists <strong>to</strong> spread <strong>the</strong> Good News <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> youth of <strong>the</strong> parish. But, tak<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong> challenge <strong>to</strong> spread <strong>the</strong> Good News may not be <strong>the</strong> only “nudge”<br />

you feel <strong>in</strong> consider<strong>in</strong>g this <strong>in</strong>vitation. Here are a few o<strong>the</strong>r compell<strong>in</strong>g reasons <strong>to</strong> answer <strong>the</strong> call.<br />

Reasons why you should say yes <strong>and</strong> become a Catechist:<br />

1. The best way <strong>to</strong> learn is <strong>to</strong> teach! You will grasp th<strong>in</strong>gs about our Faith that you may have not known.<br />

2. Your own Faith will come alive!<br />

3. You become an active participant <strong>in</strong> one of <strong>the</strong> essential responsibilities of a Church community.<br />

4. You assist <strong>in</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g Christ <strong>to</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

5. You practice stewardship.<br />

6. You show <strong>your</strong> own family that you value <strong>the</strong> Faith.<br />

7. You become a role model.<br />
