published by the Harvard Business School Press, including<br />

What Top Executives Must Know to Go from Pain to Gain. In<br />

2008, Ziff-Davis and eWEEK.com recognized <strong>Peter</strong> as #24 of<br />

<strong>Wanda</strong> <strong>Orlikowski</strong><br />

Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Management,<br />

Professor of Information Technologies<br />

and Organization Studies<br />

<strong>Wanda</strong> researchers organizational change<br />

associated with information technology,<br />

with a particular focus on work<br />

practices, communication, collaboration, and culture. She<br />

has examined the use of groupware tools in organizations,<br />

and the social and technological aspects of working<br />

virtually. Her work has appeared in numerous journals,<br />

including Organization Science, MIS Quarterly, and Sloan<br />

Management Review. She is currently studying the role and<br />

implications of social media for knowledge production and<br />

distributed work.<br />

<strong>Espen</strong> <strong>Andersen</strong><br />

Visiting Scholar, MIT CISR, and<br />

Associate Professor,<br />

Norwegian Business School<br />

<strong>Espen</strong> researches, writes, teaches, talks<br />

and consults on technology and strategy<br />

issues—in particular, the effect of<br />

increased access to information on organizations and<br />

business models, as well as competitive use of IT;<br />

telecommunications strategy; the impact of IT in the media<br />

and transportation industries; and technology evolution.<br />

Back home in Norway, he very actively participates in the<br />

public debate on technology’s societal impact.<br />

Martin Mocker<br />

Research Scientist, MIT CISR<br />

Martin researches IT strategy, complexity,<br />

and related issues, and works with MIT<br />

CISR’s European sponsors. He is currently<br />

on leave from ESB Business School,<br />

Reutlingen University, Germany, where he<br />

is a professor of business administration and information<br />

systems. Previously, Martin worked as an Engagement<br />

Manager and consultant at McKinsey & Company.<br />

John Mooney<br />

John’s current teaching and research<br />

interests include business executive<br />

Journal, and the Journal of Global Responsibility. John has<br />

been honored with a number of teaching, research, and<br />

Anne Quaadgras<br />

Research Scientist, MIT CISR<br />

Anne’s research focuses on driving<br />

value from information use via new<br />

ways of working, and the role of<br />

information technology and<br />

management practices in supporting<br />

that use in organizations. Her academic and<br />

consulting background includes extensive work on<br />

decision-making processes, prioritization, and project<br />

portfolio management, as well as problem<br />

management in distributed operational work.<br />

<strong>Peter</strong> Reynolds<br />

Research Scientist, MIT CISR<br />

<strong>Peter</strong>’s research focuses on digital<br />

strategy, digital innovation,<br />

organizational design, and IT-based<br />

business transformation. He also<br />

manages MIT CISR sponsor relations<br />

in AsiaPac. <strong>Peter</strong> is on the editorial board of the<br />

Journal of Information Technology (JIT). He is a<br />

former senior IT executive in financial services and<br />

engineering.<br />

Hüseyin Tanriverdi<br />

Hüseyin focuses on complementary<br />

IT and business capabilities that<br />

enable firms to achieve superior financial<br />

performance in corporate diversification moves;<br />

mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, spin-offs and splitups;<br />

outsourcing and off shoring initiatives; and<br />

adoption and deployment of complex IT innovations.<br />

His publications have appeared in top information<br />

systems journals such as Information Systems<br />

Research and MIS Quarterly, and top management<br />

journals such as Academy of Management Journal<br />

Stephanie Woerner<br />

Research Scientist, MIT CISR<br />

Stephanie’s research studies the<br />

impact of IT reuse and total firm<br />

digitization. As part of this research,<br />

she manages the CISR research<br />

surveys that collect IT financial data<br />

and performance metrics. Her previous work focused<br />

on the effect of distributed collaboration on work and<br />

communication practices.

Christopher Perretta<br />

Executive Vice President and<br />

Chief Information Officer,<br />

State Street Corporation<br />

Christopher (Chris) is executive vice<br />

president and chief information<br />

officer (CIO). In this capacity, Mr.<br />

Perretta is responsible for State Street’s information<br />

technology businesses globally and the strategic<br />

direction and management of State Street’s<br />

information technology organization, which includes<br />

more than 5,300 employees and contractors around<br />

the world. He oversees global technology<br />

infrastructure, application development, and systems<br />

architecture for all of State Street worldwide.<br />

Prior to joining State Street, Chris was the chief<br />

information officer for General Electric Commercial<br />

Finance. Previous to this he served as CIO for the<br />

North American Consumer Financial Services unit and<br />

chief technology officer for GE Capital. Prior to his<br />

tenure at General Electric, he was an associate<br />

partner at <strong>Andersen</strong> Consulting (now Accenture),<br />

where he dealt in both the industrial and financial<br />

services practice areas. He also spent more than five<br />

years leading the development of various technology<br />

initiatives in Europe.<br />

Mr. Perretta holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree<br />

in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins<br />

University and Syracuse University, respectively.<br />

James S. Phalen<br />

Executive Vice President and<br />

Head of Global Operations,<br />

Technology and Product<br />

Development,<br />

State Street Corporation<br />

James is executive vice president<br />

and head of Global Operations, Technology &<br />

Product Development. He is a member of State<br />

Street’s Management Committee, the company’s<br />

most senior strategy and policy-making team.<br />

Previously, Mr. Phalen was head of State Street’s<br />

international operations for investment servicing and<br />

investment research and trading. In this role, he<br />

oversaw strategy, operations and business<br />

development for State Street’s investment services<br />

and investment research and trading outside North<br />

America. He was also formerly chairman and chief<br />

executive officer of CitiStreet, one of the largest<br />

global benefits delivery firms in the country.<br />

Before joining CitiStreet, James spent eight years in<br />

senior roles at State Street. Prior to this, he was<br />

president and chief operating officer of Boston<br />

Financial (BFDS), a joint venture of State Street and<br />

DST Systems, Inc.<br />

Mr. Phalen is a director of Boston Financial Data<br />

Services and the Boston Medical Center. He holds a<br />

degree from Boston College and graduated from the<br />

Stonier Graduate School of Banking. He also<br />

attended the Executive Development Program at<br />

Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School<br />

of Management.
