Night’s Dream this Friday July 6 at The Redgum

Melrose Park residents are rejoicing the decision by 

Transport Minister Andrew Constance to not run the 

proposed Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 route along 

Wharf Road but along adjacent Waratah Street instead. 

Under the original proposed Wharf Road route a 

number of houses would have to be purchased and 

demolished. The residents were furious. 

Andrew Constance met with residents and Ryde MP 

Victor Dominello early on Monday morning on site to 

announce “the Government has been listening to 

feedback from the community and an alternate route 

along Waratah Street will be investigated”. 

In October 2017 the NSW Government announced 

the preferred route for PLR Stage 2 which will connect 

the Parramatta CBD to Ermington, Melrose Park, 

Wentworth Point and Sydney Olympic Park along a 

nine kilometre route. 

Planning approval was granted in May 2018 for Stage 

1 which will link Westmead to Carlingford via the 

Parramatta CBD and Camelia. 

The tram route through the Parramatta CBD could be 

equally destructive as the disaster in Sydney CBD 

along George Street where a $1 billion dollars lawsuit 

opened in the NSW Supreme Court yesterday.

Ryde Hunters Hill Flora & Fauna Preservation Society 

have organised Wildflower walks on Saturday July 14. 

Meet at the Visitor Centre in the Reserve. 

Walks depart hourly with first walk beginning 11am

Awards Nominations Have Closed 

The Northern Districts community has thrown its support behind its local 

businesses with thousands of nominations received for this year’s Northern 

Districts Local Business Awards. 

Nominations for the awards have closed and counting is underway to determine this year’s 

finalists. 

Precedent Productions Managing Director 

and Awards founder Steve Loe said Northern 

Districts residents had taken particular 

advantage of the opportunity to 

lodge nominations via the Awards’ 

website. 

Online nominations have 

become popular this year with 

more customers selecting this 

method, rather than posting a 

printed coupon. 

“This year, more people 

than ever took the opportunity 

to nominate their favourite 

businesses online,” Mr Loe said. 

“Coupled with the printed 

coupons, we were inundated with 

thousands of nominations. 

“The Northern Districts community is closeknit 

and parochial in the very best sense of the 

word as they support each other and celebrate 

everyone’s achievements. 

“That’s just one of the many reasons why so 

many people choose to live, work and operate 

businesses in the area.” 

The Precedent Productions teamhave already 

started to review the nominations, find the most

The Awards’ anonymous judges will then visit

country friends are exposed 

to day after day, month after 

month. However, this is only 

the tip of the drought “iceberg”. 

Then reality bites! Their 

stock is in very poor health, 

barely able to stand. The sale 

price is worthless, and then 

ultimately and tragically there 

is no choice but to destroy 

their livestock. 

Recently the Premier and 

Deputy Premier visited a 

property at Dubbo sifting 

drought stained dirt through 

their hands in front of the media. 

The response by the 

State Government for the 

drought relief was short, 

unresearched, and lacked 

compassion for the suffering 

which exist in the bush. 

It included a fifty thousand 

dollar seven year LOAN!!!!, 

support for innovation for 

farming, and…… wait for 

this…..guidance for the 

preparation for impending 

drought. 

Clearly this proposal was 

developed by bureaucrats in 

Macquarie Street! 

If our Local Member, Mr 

Anthony Roberts (a Minister 

in the Government) actually 

agrees and supports this nonsense, 

then he and his cabinet 

colleagues need to confront 

the real issues facing the 

farmers and their suffering. 

Not just a “fly in and fly out” 

visit expressing the governments 

so called understanding 

and sympathy to the bush. 

The key support the farmers 

need is a subsidy program so 

feed and hay can be transported 

to the farm gate. Due 

to the lack of available feed 

most need to be obtained 

from WA. The cost of feeding 

farm stock is prohibitive. 

The State Government has 

a subsidy based program for 

our public transport system 

for 85 percent. Where is the 

subsidies support for our 

farmers and their transport 

costs? 

Having grown up in North 

Western NSW I have experienced 

and witnessed the 

devastation, the suffering, 

and the anguish of a prolonged 

drought. 

The wider affect the drought 

has on a town’s community 

is severe and in some cases

terms of the racist, so he cannot 

be pinned down to justify 

what he says. 

Let’s see: “billions of dollars 

of Chinese money (some 

undoubtedly corrupt)” - does 

he mean the money is corrupt, 

the Chinese who invest 

it are corrupt or does the word 

“undoubtedly” give him away 

- he does not actually know? 

Actually, if we look at 

Australian history we’d understand 

that in the past it 

was British money and then 

American money that bought 

up our assets - think General 

Motors Holden (how long 

was it actually an Australian 

car?); British Tobacco - we’ve 

smoked ourselves to death

Big Asian demand 

for NSW coal 

Dear Sir, 

A new report on expected 

Asian demand for Australian 

thermal coal highlights 

a significant opportunity for 

NSW, and the risk that this 

opportunity may be lost to 

others. 

The report by expert industry 

analyst Commodity Insights 

(commissioned by the 

MCA and COAL21 Fund) has 

forecast strong demand for 

Australian thermal coal, including 

here in NSW, across 

existing and emerging Asian 

markets between now and 

2030. 

The report estimates that 

Asian thermal coal demand 

is expected to grow over 

400 million tonnes (Mt) from 

740Mt in 2017 to 1147Mt in 

2030 - that’s double Australia’s 

total 2017 thermal coal 

export volume of 200Mt. 

Demand is expected to be 

driven by increased regional 

industrialisation and the development 

of high efficiency 

low emission (HELE) coalfired 

power stations across 

many of NSW traditional 

coal export markets including 

Japan, China, Taiwan and 

Korea, as well as in emerging 

markets like Vietnam, the Philippines 

and Thailand. 

This report confirms strong 

future prospects for NSW 

coal exports due to a significant 

increase in Asian 

demand for thermal coal for 

power generation, providing 

an opportunity for more NSW 

mining jobs, higher sustained 

NSW mining royalties and 

lower global emissions.” 

It should also be understood 

that failure to grasp this 

opportunity will mean thermal 

coal will be supplied by others, 

resulting in fewer NSW 

jobs, less NSW mining royalties, 

and potentially higher 

global emissions from low 

quality coal. 

The NSW Budget was a 

clear demonstration of the 

economic benefits of mining 

to NSW, with a record $1.8 

billion in royalties for 2017- 

18, and even higher royalties 

forecast for the years ahead 

to help to pay for better services 

for the community. 

The projected $7.4 billion in 

mining royalties to 2021-22 

would more than pay for the 

NSW Government’s $6 billion 

commitment to fund 170 new 

and upgraded schools, or pay 

for almost all of the NSW Government’s 

$8 billion commitment 

for better health facilities 

including 40 new or upgraded 

hospital across NSW. 

This report shows that with 

the right policies to support 

mining we can lock in these 

benefits for the longer term. 

However, the report highlights 

the need for an efficient mining 

approvals process and a 

regulatory system that is effective 

but not burdensome.

and a fulfilling activity 

BRIDGE is derived from 

the 17th century card 

game whist, which was in 

vogue among the English 

nobility of the time. 

In whist, four players (who 

comprise two partnerships) 

are each dealt 13 cards from 

a 52 card deck, with a partnership’s 

objective being to 

win as many tricks as possible. 

There was no auction to 

determine the trump suit as 

there is in modern bridge 

and the scoring was vastly 

more simple. 

In 1925 Contract bridge 

was invented by the American 

Harold Vanderbilt. 

It quickly gained popularity 

in the United States and it 

experienced its Golden Age 

in the 1930s and 1940s during 

which time the game featured 

prominently in Sports 

Illustrated and competed 

with baseball to be America’s 

national pastime. 

Bridge remains popular 

around the world today. 

It combines the elements 

of mental stimulation, luck 

and socialising all of which 

are hard to find in other 

games as cheap and easy

THE Hunters Hill Heritage Trust has received more than $36,000 in the 

State Budget thanks to lobbying from Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts. 

Mr Roberts said the community organisation with information and photographs 

$36,010 grant has been 

approved under the NSW 

Government Heritage Grants 

Program to help the trust 

share the stories of Hunters 

Hill’s past. 

“I am pleased to announce 

the successful grant to Hunters 

Hill Trust Incorporated, 

for their Project called the 

Heritage of Hunters Hill: Digitised 

Online Resource; Publication 

and Oral histories,” 

Mr Roberts said. 

“Looking after our heritage 

is everyone’s responsibility 

and local communities play 

an important role in maintaining 

more than 400 members 

committed to preserving the 

unique heritage of Australia’s 

oldest garden suburb. 

Hunters Hill has 1,244 

listed heritage items that 

includes buildings, sub-divisions, 

bushland, stone walls 

and 223 places listed on the 

Register of the National Estate 

and 102 documented 

Aboriginal heritage sites. 

“It is a place of national 

significance this project will 

provide images and historical 

information for approximately 

500 of these heritage 

items so that they can be 

of heritage items 

and interview senior community 

members about past 

aspects of life in Hunters Hill. 

The grant will also enable 

the Trust to add newly created 

heritage records to the 

website. 

“The publication, searchable 

heritage material and oral 

histories will be launched as 

the centre-piece of the 50th 

anniversary of the formation 

of the Trust,” he said. 

“This event is likely to attract 

significant attention as 

it was part of the first Green 

Bans in the world.”

Gladesville residents force removal of ‘diabolical’ stop sign 

GLADESVILLE residents backed by The Weekly Times and City of Ryde 

Clr Roy Maggio have been able to get the council to remove a controversial 

STOP sign at the intersection of Monash and Buffalo Roads. 

Councillor Maggio received 

confirmation on 

Thursday the sign would 

be removed, two days after 

he raised the issue as 

an Urgency motion during 

the last council meeting. 

The action responds 

to reports to The Weekly 

Times of car crashes - related 

to the stop sign – 

from local residents who 

said it had been “dangerously” 

placed by council 

workers on busy Monash 

Road to give preferential 

right of way to traffic from 

the less used, adjoining 

Buffalo Road. 

Resident Phil Lown (pictured,

majority of motorists driving 

north along Monash 

Road fail to stop at the 

stop sign. 

“They are either disregarding 

the stop sign or 

they simply cannot see 

it as the two stop signs 

there are set about a metre 

higher than the Roads 

and Maritime Services and 

Australian standards,” Mr 

Lown said. 

A study undertaken by 

this newspaper on Thursday 

afternoon confirmed 

that 51 out of one hundred 

peak hour cars completely 

ignored the stop sign, 39 

slowed but did not stop 

and only ten fully stopped 

as directed. 

“At night, when the stop 

sign is less visible, even 

fewer cars stop and they 

completely ignore the 

speed limit, ” one resident 

said 

Some residents said the 

main danger came from 

the confusion of Buffalo 

Road motorists - turning 

right into Monash Road 

- who are cannot see the 

Monash Road stop sign 

which gives them preferential 

right of way. 

“They naturally assume 

they should give way to 

cars on their right, approaching 

from a much 

busier road,” one resident 

said. 

“We’ve seen many cars 

almost collide because no 

one is sure who has the 

right of way.” 

To make a dangerous 

situation worse, Mr Lown 

said some buses are leaking 

oil at the intersection 

which causes cars who 

break suddenly at the intersection 

to skid. 

“You can actually see 

skid marks at the intersection 

and trees which have 

lost their branches as cars 

and buses veer into the 

curb.” 

It is the dangerous situation 

on the curbside that 

concerns local mum Lena 

Candy, pictured. 

“I fear crossing this intersection 

with my child and 

we should never, ever have 

been put in this situation,” 

she said. 

“What makes it worse 

is that residents were not 

even consulted when the 

stop sign was put in.” 

Although Mr Lown described 

the situation as 

“diabolical” he stopped 

short of blaming the council 

for it. 

“I’m not blaming anyone 

at all, but we should learn 

from this and get the problem 

fixed before there is a 

fatality,” he said. 

Councillor Maggio 

agreed and welcomed the 

decision to remove the 

sign but wants further action 

taken after consultation 

with residents. 

“What we need immediately 

are speed humps 

a few hundred yards 

from the intersection on 

Monash Road, which will 

at least slow the traffic,” 

he said. 

“We also need to talk 

with those residents who 

tell as these streets have 

become a rat run for cars 

avoiding Victoria Road.” 

Mr Lown agreed. 

”If council will not agree 

to the re-instatement of 

the old system then we 

need to have reduced 

speed limits,” he said. 

“The faster the traffic 

goes, the more horrendous 

the accidents will be.” 

He would also like to see 

the police and bus drivers 

consulted alongside residents. 

”We have not even 

touched on the property 

value diminution now being 

felt by several residents,” 

he said.

CITY of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale has been accused of being a 

hypocrite in his campaign against local over development. 

The accusation 

against the Mayor – 

who is also the Labor 

candidate for Ryde – 

was made by Liberal 

councillors during 

last Tuesday night’s 

council meeting in a 

debate about two Top 

Ryde sites that could 

be developed for high 

rise residential apartments 

under the City 

of Ryde’s Four Year 

Plan. 

The Liberal councillors 

supported a 

motion by Liberal 

Clr Chris Moujalli to 

have the potential 

developments at Top 

Ryde’s Argyle Centre 

(33-35 Blaxland 

Road) and the Battery 

World site (741- 

747 Victoria Road) removed 

from the Four 

Year Plan, which has 

the Mayor’s support. 

Councillor Moujalli 

said it is hypocritical 

of the Mayor to campaign 

against overdevelopment 

in the City 

of Ryde, but include 

the two Top Ryde 

sites in the plan. 

“The Mayor comes 

out against property 

developers yet he 

wants to be a property 

developer himself,” 

Clr Moujalli said. 

Councillor Sarkis 

Yedelian OAM 

agreed. 

“We are freezing 

everyone’s else’s developments 

and we 

should not set a bad 

example ourselves,” 

he said. 

“We also say we are 

against overdevelopment 

and we blame 

the state government, 

so let us not 

support overdevelopment 

ourselves.” 

Mayor Laxale said 

he “rejected outright” 

the claim that the inclusion 

of these sites 

in the Four Year Plan 

sealed their fate and 

stressed that any 

development would 

have to have community 

consultation and 

community support. 

“There is some political 

game being 

played here,” he said. 

“I cannot support 

this amendment (to 

exclude the sites 

from the plan) because 

I know these 

sites are intricately 

linked with the future 

of the Civic Centre 

and we need to look 

at these sites together, 

not separate 

them. 

“We also need to 

have workshops prior 

to any community 

consultation.”

zoning allowed for 

residential apartments

the Argyle Centre

“I strongly put the

Centre, especially, 

should remain zoned 

for the arts and why 

we are embracing it 

for residential is just 

not clear. 

“Let us ask the 

community if they 

want high rise residential 

here and I’m 

sure they will reject 

it.”

High Drama at Ryde Secondary College 

RYDE Secondary College unveiled its acting talent when more than 60 students showed their 

wares at the annual Drama Showcase Night. 

Students from the 

elective Drama classes 

in Years 9 to 12, along 

with the College Drama 

Club performed a range 

of scripted and self-devised 

pieces for a packed 

house. 

Years 9, 10 and 12 students 

created their own 

works. 

Not only did they direct 

and act in their performances, 

they also scripted 

the work from scratch 

with Year 11 students 

performing excerpts from 

famous playwrights including 

Shakespeare, 

Samuel Beckett and Oscar 

Wilde. 

The Drama Club, which 

consists of mainly Year 7 

and 8 students, devised 

an ensemble piece under 

the direction of their tutor 

Cate Cunningham. 

‘The great thing about 

drama is that it is accessible 

to all,” said Alison 

Shaw, Heat Teacher of 

Creative and Performing 

Arts at Ryde. 

“Students from different 

grades, different friendship 

groups, with varying 

abilities and skills were all 

able to work collaboratively 

and showcase their 

talents,” she said. 

“Every student left with 

a great sense of accomplishment 

and a sense 

of belonging, having 

been part of such a large 

event.’

Giant Jigsaw Puzzle for Refuge Meals 

At West Ryde Marketplace

West Ryde Marketplace is providing 800 

meals for women and children victims of domestic 

violence represented by 800 pieces 

of the giant wall jigsaw puzzle now being 

built at the shopping centre. 

Charter Hall owners and managers of the 

shopping centre are working in partnership with 

the Two Good community charity which has delivered 

more than 40,000 meals to refuges and 

shelters since its inception in late 2016. 

Two Good founder Rob Caslick says “we 

are thrilled to be partnering with Charter Hall 

to raise awareness of domestic violence in regional 

areas”. 

Two Good has established a kitchen in Sydney 

where domestic violence survivors can train for 

jobs in hospitality. 

The giant wall jigsaw puzzle features the Too 

Good community members who are helping 

deliver 800 meals to local domestic violence 

shelters and each piece of the jigsaw represents 

a meal. 

Too Good community member faces to appear 

include Delivering Good Ambassadors celebrity 

chefs Neil Perry and Maggie Beer as well 

as founder Rob Caslick and some of the women 

who have experienced domestic violence. 

Members of the public are invited to participate 

by selecting a piece of the jigsaw from a 

bucket at the puzzle site where puzzle builder 

Sarah will operate 10am to 2pm every day 

Wednesday to Sunday until Saturday week July 

14. 

Shoppers who select a “golden” puzzle piece 

at random will receive a Maggie Beer cookbook 

or a Rockpool dining experience valued 

at $600.

“All of the music is orchestrated 

and arranged by the members of 

our Music Team,” says Orchestra 

Leader Jeff Hook. 

“This year we have 36 songs to 

play with the cast as well as an 

Overture, Entr’acte and Playout 

to get under our fingers, so a high 

standard of musicianship is required,” 

he said. 

“We all enjoy playing together as 

a Team each year as it definitely develops 

our music skills and experience. 

Collectively we all keep coming 

back year after year because 

we believe in making a difference to 

the 160 cast on that stage by supporting 

them with an opportunity 

that they may not otherwise get” he 

added. 

In this year’s show the CGS Orchestra 

has 24 musicians including 

flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, 

trombones, guitars, double 

bass, keyboards, synthesisers and 

drums/percussion. 

The Orchestra is comprised of 

Scouting and Guiding members in 

both Leadership and adult support 

positions and they play a variety of 

music featuring both locally written 

songs and popular contemporary 

music.

Adam Wardell, in his 30th year 

with CGS, plays Lead Guitar in the 

Orchestra while Keira - who plays 

the flute and piano - is in her third 

stint with the Show. 

A long time cast member, Adam 

has held the position of Assistant 

Producer/Director, holds other roles 

and loves being part of the CGS 

family. 

Lars and Carol Hornstra make the 

trip up from Picton each year to 

help with CGS. 

Whilst Lars is playing Rhythm Guitar 

in the Orchestra, Tristan’s mum 

Carol is busy backstage helping out 

in the Makeup Team. 

This is Tristan’s 20th year in CGS 

and he also has a music background 

with playing guitar and holds the 

position of Production Director. 

Mary Falvey, a seven year member, 

is the mother of Lucy and Rebecca 

and plays clarinet in the Orchestra. 

She began learning the clarinet 

during her school years in the United 

Kingdom and continued clarinet 

as part of her school teaching degree. 

This is Lucy’s seventh year in CGS 

and she also plays the clarinet. During 

her HSC year in 2016 Lucy took 

a year off from cast and played in 

the Orchestra alongside her mum 

Mary. 

Rebecca - in her third year with 

the Show - also plays the alto saxophone. 

Mary is proud of her daughters as 

both of them have some solo singing 

parts. 

Show opens on Friday July 13 and 

runs until Saturday July 21 during 

the school holidays with 7.30pm 

evening performances and 2pm 

matinees.

THERE are several major risk factors with skin cancer, Eastwood based Dr Peter Kim (pictured) 

said this week. 

These factors are fair skin, 

family history, personal history, 

exposure to the sun, freckles, 

non healing skin lesions and immune 

suppression. 

“If you have any of these factors, 

you are automatically at a 

higher risk of having a skin cancer,” 

Dr Kim said. 

“The fairer your skin is the 

more likely it is that your skin 

will burn and you will have a 

higher risk of developing skin 

cancer. 

“A typical stereotype of these 

skin types are people from European, 

Scandinavian and British 

descent as their skin is fair and 

they tend to burn rather than 

tan.” 

Family history and personal 

history are also factors. 

“Some skin cancers tend to run 

in the family and if you had one 

skin cancer, you are more likely 

to have another one,” Dr Kim 

said. 

Australian governments have 

funded major advertising campaigns 

to warn of the risk of over 

exposure to sunlight, often using 

models with fair skin and freckles. 

“Whether it is recreational or 

work related, prolong exposure 

to high level UV exposure is the 

reason why Australia is the skin 

cancer capital of the world,” he 

said. 

“The number of freckles in 

your body is a positive correlation 

to the risk of developing 

melanoma.” 

People with a non healing skin 

lesion should seek medical advice. 

“Skin cancers don’t heal and 

that is why they present as a non 

healing skin lesion. 

“All non healing skin lesions 

should attract medical attention.” 

Immune suppression also increases 

the risk. 

“Whether you immune is suppressed 

because of chemotherapy, 

medications or medical 

illness, these patients are more 

susceptible to skin cancers.” 

Dr Kim stressed that two out 

of every three Australians will 

be diagnosed with skin cancer 

by the time they are 70 and that 

more than 750,000 people treated 

for one or more non-melanoma 

skin cancers in Australia 

each year. 

The recent statistics further 

indicate that 13,134 Australians 

were diagnosed with melanoma 

while 2015, 2,162 people died 

from skin cancer in Australia. 

These fatalities include 1,520 

from melanoma and 642 from 

non-melanoma skin cancers.

Labor promises to keep Marsden High 

and Meadowbank Public School open 

MEADOWBANK Public School and Marsden High School will be saved 

from demolition under a promise made to The Weekly Times on Monday 

by Shadow Minister for Education, Jihad Dibb.

Urgency Motion slams a government protest ban 

A STATE government plan to ban protest meetings on crown land and 

fine individual protestors up to $11,000 was blasted in an Urgency Motion 

put by Deputy Mayor Christopher Gordon during last Tuesday night’s City 

of Ryde council meeting. 

Deputy Mayor 

Gordon warned that 

the new Regulation 

13 (1) of the Crown 

Land Management 

Regulation (2018) 

is due comes into 

force this month 

and can prosecute 

any person taking 

part in any gathering, 

meeting or assembly 

on crown 

land except in the 

case of a cemetery 

or for the purpose of 

a religious or other 

ceremony of burial 

or commemoration. 

He said that the 

law will ban protestors 

at endangered 

community and environmental 

sites, if 

these are on parks 

or other crown 

lands. 

“As it stands, we 

would each face an 

$11,000 fine if we 

were told to move 

on, even from gatherings 

like the Armenian 

Genocide 

commemoration in 

Memorial Park in 

Meadowbank,” he 

said. 

“You will be fined 

if you were asked 

to move on and 

this law impacts on 

each and every one 

of us.” 

The state government 

recently 

cracked down on 

protests at NSW 

Parliament with police 

at parliament 

house further empowered 

to search 

people and prohibit 

t-shirts and banners 

which display a protest 

slogan.

notice, so it is not 

even the police,” he

Lane said opposition 

to the law is being 

driven by political 

extremists. 

“You (Clr Gordon) 

know the aim of 

this safe access Bill 

has nothing to do 

with stopping political 

protests and 

you know that opposition 

to it comes 

from the far right,” 

he said. 

“This simply empowers 

our law enforcement 

officers.”

Marsfield fire grandmum 

in tearful council speech 

THE mother of the recent Marsfield home fire tragedy victims broke down in tears when she gave 

a heartfelt address at last Tuesday night’s City of Ryde council meeting. 

Zhongzhen Liu recently 

rushed to Ryde from 

China to be by the bedsides 

of Hao Wang and 

Fiona Yang who suffered 

serious burns when their 

Zanco Road home was 

engulfted by flames on 

March 28. 

Ms Liu is also caring for 

her nine-year-old granddaughter 

who attends 

Kent Road Public School 

and her four-year-old 

grandson who attends 

St George’s Preschool at 

Eastwood. 

Speaking through an 

interpreter she said the 

parents are still in an intensive 

care unit and her 

husband has returned to 

China. 

“I am the mother of the 

victims of the fire incident

Rates set to rise in Hunters Hill 

RATES in Hunters Hill look set to rise with the council expected to seek a special rates variation. 

The proposed rates rise has 

been included in the council’s 

strategic plan, which was endorsed 

by councillors at Monday 

night’s extraordinary council 

meeting. 

It follows a recent community 

based survey which found that 

ratepayers will accept a rise to 

maintain existing assets and 

services. 

“The community has been 

clear about ensuring the council 

continues to maintain building, 

parks and recreation at agreed 

levels, ” the Strategic Plan 

states. 

“It will be necessary for council 

to consider reapplying to 

the Independent Pricing and 

Regulatory Tribunal to have the 

Community Facilities Asset Infrastructure 

special rate reinstated,” 

Only Liberal Clr Ben Collins 

questioned the proposed rate 

rise, which is supported by General 

Manager Barry Smith. 

Ratepayers will be notified on 

how much more their households 

will pay and why. 

“It will be necessary to explain 

to the community the impact 

that the special rate (rise) will 

have, such as the percentage increase 

and whether the increase 

will be permanent or temporary,” 

the report adds. 

Hunters Hill Council is currently 

seeking reimbursement of the 

tens of thousands of dollars it 

spent fighting the state government’s 

unsuccessful proposed 

forced merger with Lane Cove 

and the City of Ryde. 

Potholes targeted 

in Hunters Hill plan 

POTHOLE repairs and park 

maintenance have emerged as 

key ratepayer concerns identified 

in the council’s new strategic 

plan. 

The plan was endorsed by 

councillors on Monday night 

and recommends that dangerous 

potholes should be made 

safe within five days of council 

staff being notified. 

Footpath trip hazards should 

be made safe within five days 

and blocked municipal drains 

cleared within 24 hours. 

The plan further recommends 

that parks and reserves 

be mowed at least every four 

weeks in summer and every six 

weeks in winter with amenity 

blocks being cleaned every two 

days. 

Dangerous street trees will 

be removed within 30 days, although 

falling branches and 

branches impacting on power 

lines may not (necessarily) warrant 

a tree’s complete removal. 

Residents angry with waste 

collection being carried out during 

the night have had their concerns 

heard in the plan, which 

recommends that no waste collection 

be done before 6 am.

Murdered Ryde woman Cecilia Haddad

Police suspect lover of 

murdered Ryde woman 

The former boyfriend of murdered Ryde woman 

Cecilia Haddad (pictured) could avoid extradition 

from Brazil despite a police warrant for his arrest. 

Suspect Mario Marcelo Santoro left Australia the 

weekend Ms Haddad’s body was found in the Lane 

Cove River area in April.but the arrest warrant does 

not ensure Brazil will hand him over, due to the extradition 

process between the two countries. 

A car found parked at West Ryde railway station 

has been linked with the case alongside a set of 

keys - reported to have been found by police - witnesses 

said were thrown from a car on the Anzac 

Bridge. 

Police allege thirty eight year old Ms Haddad, 

told Santoro to move out of her Ryde apartment 

weeks before her body was found on Sunday, April 

29 but said there was no signs of a disturbance at 

her home. 

The Brazilian-born executive moved to Sydney in 

2016 to work in the mining industry. 

Her last confirmed sighting was at a local barbecue 

the night before she vanished and she is 

reported to have made a phone call to a friend the 

following morning 

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the NSW government 

will assist police. 

“We want to make sure justice is served,” she 

said.

A SUSPECTED drug dealer was arrested and 

charged in Eastwood on Saturday. 

Police allege the 47 year old Willoughby man was 

found with the drugs cocaine and methamphetamine 

during a search of his car in Rutledge Street 

around 9.15pm on Saturday. 

The search is also alleged to have found an electric 

scale, a blister pack containing 10 tablets of 

Alprozolam, a flick knife with a 9 centimetre blade, 

a multi-tool with a blade, a used ice pipe and three 

mobile phones. 

He was charged with two counts of Supply Prohibited 

Drug, two counts of Possess Prohibited 

Drug and Custody of Knife In Public Place. 

He was given conditional bail to appear in Burwood 

Local Court on July 16.


Comparison rates don’t give 

Australians enough credit

(CR) is a made-up, notional 

and unrealistic 

‘rate’ which tries to include 

ongoing fees into 

the actual interest rate, 

in a rudimentary effort to 

estimate the true cost of 

a loan. 

It’s like a car salesman 

giving you a price on a 

car that wraps up their 

estimate of fuel and repairs 

in the next few 

years. 

If you have a mortgage 

you probably pay an annual 

‘Package Fee’ of 

around $395 per annum, 

which means you pay 

no other ongoing fees. 

For an $800,000 mortgage, 

a $395 annual fee 

is the equivalent of only 

0.05% on top of the 

rate. 

So why the big difference 

between the actual 

& Comparison rates? It’s 

because the advertised 

comparison rates must 

be calculated on the assumption 

of a $150,000 

loan. 

On a small loan like 

that the annual fee represents 

a whopping 

0.26% - so a packaged 

is usually not recommend

A million dollar park for 

Lane Cove community 

LANE Cove North has a new park thanks to a one million dollar grant from 

Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts matched dollar for dollar by Lane Cove 

Council. 

The new Mindarie Park will 

be located at the corner of 

Mindarie Street and Kullah 

Parade and will feature an inclusive 

playspace. 

Mr Roberts told The Weekly 

Times the park will become a 

model park for other municipalities 

because it has been 

designed for all people in the 

community. 

“It will be open to young 

and old people from all backgrounds 

and all abilities,” he 

said. 

“Parks are something I’m 

passionate about and to have 

a new park where mums can 

play with small children and 

socialise with other mums is 

just so extraordinary and so

Mr Crouch said the speculated 

purchase by the Transurban 

group will give it an 

increased ability to secure 

new toll road concessions 

based on increasing the 

heavy vehicle multiplier on 

its existing toll road assets. 

He said this is because the 

Berejiklian Government’s 

tolling principles require 

truck tolls to be at least 

three times higher than car 

tolls and Transurban has 

demonstrated a willingness 

to use interstate truck toll 

multipliers as part of its case 

for increasing local multipliers. 

“The 16,000 hardworking 

trucking businesses in 

New South Wales cannot afford 

the truck tolls they are 

charged now,” Mr Crouch 

said. 

“The proposed sale would 

inevitably result in tolls becoming 

even higher. 

“Motorists have the ability 

to hop on the train or 

catch the bus if they wish to 

avoid toll roads, but a freight 

transporter can’t strap their 

load to the back of a bicycle 

and hope for the best.” 

The government argues 

that truck tolls reflect the increased 

road maintenance 

cost caused by heavy vehicle 

use but Mr Crouch rejects 

this. 

“For a fully laden, six-axle 

articulated truck, the estimated 

marginal cost of road 

wear on an urban toll road is 

16 cents per kilometre,” he 

said. 

“On the M7 for example, 

the truck toll of $1.19 per 

kilometre is more than seven 

times the actual cost.”

raises $14,500 for Cancer Council 

LOCAL residents Fernanda Cicciari and Filomena Cavallaro gathered the community together recently at St 

Ambrose Primary School in Concord West for a cup of tea and bite to eat, all in the name of a cancer free future, 

raising a staggering $14,500 and counting. 

The Biggest Morning 

Tea included 

plenty of fun activities 

such as hair styling, 

a silent auction, 

raffle and lucky door 

prizes plus plenty of 

delicious treats including 

homemade 

cakes and biscuits. 

All funds raised on 

the day went towards 

Cancer Council’s research, 

prevention, 

advocacy and support 

services.

Ryde young guns shine 

in Champions Trophy

RYDE Hunters Hill hockey wizards Tom Craig, Lachlan Sharp 

and Tim Brand have covered themselves in glory with the world 

champion Australian Kookaburras hockey team. 

The outstanding trio 

helped the Kookaburras 

clinch a record 15th Champions 

Trophy in Breda, 

Netherlands with a victory 

over India in the final in 

shootouts. 

It was a meritorious 

achievement by the local 

Panthers’ products who 

stamped their mark at the 

prestigious tournament with 

classy performances. 

Australia and India finished 

1-all at fulltime in the 

final before the Kookaburras 

secured the trophy 3-1 in 

the shootout with goals by 

co-captain Aran Zalewski, 

Daniel Beale and Jeremy 

Edwards.

Sharp have come 

through the junior and senior 

ranks at Ryde-Hunters 

Hill Hockey Club and are all 

former recipients of the TWT 

Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation 

Sports Star of the 

Year Award. 

They are now established 

members of this skilful and 

exciting Kookaburras line 

up - which is a proud feat for 

the respected Ryde club that 

competes in the Sydney Premier 

Hockey League. 

The Kookaburras drew 

3-all in their opening Champions 

Trophy clash with Belgium 

with Sharp nabbing a 

goal before posting victories 

over Pakistan (2-1), India 

(3-2) with Sharp and Hogan 

among the goal scorers and 

The Netherlands (3-1). 

Their only defeat came in 

the final pool match against 

Argentina who registered a 

3-2 upset with 19 year old 

ace Tim Brand notching a 

double - his first goals for 

Australia at senior international 

level. 

20 year old Sharp and 

Craig, 23, were part of Australia’s 

triumphant Commonwealth 

Games team that 

captured gold on the Gold

yet another Champions Trophy on Monday morning 

in Breda, Netherlands.

Hockey World League titles 

before playing alongside

the Kookaburras lifted the 

Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and 

Commonwealth Games titles.

yesterday. 

“The Club couldn’t be more 

delighted for them and their 

families,” he said. 

“It’s been an amazing week

well on the highest international 

stage and play such 

critical roles for the world 

number one team - the 

Kookaburras success.

This was the final iteration 

of the Champions Trophy 

which will now be replaced 

by the FIH Pro League from 

2019. 

All eyes now turn to the

utility forward Bayley 

Sironen (pictured). 

The talented 21 year old 

colt, who is the youngest son 

of legendary Balmain international 

forward Paul Sironen 

and kid brother of Manly back 

rower Curtis Sironen, has 

signed a one-year deal with 

the Rabbitohs from 2019 with 

a one year option. 

Bayley is yet another product 

of the Tigers’ proud rugby 

league nursery at Holy Cross 

College Ryde and made two 

NRL appearances with the 

joint venture club last season. 

He will join his former Holy 

Cross Rhinos, Balmain junior 

representative and U/20s 

Holden Cup team mate Junior 

Tatola at the Rabbitohs next 

season. 

The pair formed a crack 

combination for eleven seasons 

with the powerful Rhinos 

- winning a swag of premierships 

in the Balmain Junior 

League and Combined Sydney 

competitions. 

Bayley skippered the Tigers 

in the U/16 Harold Matthews 

and U/18 S.G Ball Cup series 

and tasted success with the 

NSW U/16 and U/20 representative 

teams. 

The skilful forward was rewarded 

for his strong performances 

in the Western 

Suburbs Magpies team this 

season in the Intrust Super 

premiership with a NSW Residents 

jumper. 

Bayley helped the Blues blitz 

Queensland Residents 36-20 

in the recent interstate challenge 

at ANZ Stadium that 

was played as a curtain raiser 

to State of Origin 2. 

He was joined in the NSW 

side by Western Suburbs 

Magpies forward team mates
