Dear applicant,
02 WORD FROM HEAD ORGANISERS
03 PRESIDENTIAL VISION
04 APPLICATION QUESTIONS
We the head organizers of SALDUS’18 want to thank you for showing
interest in helping us reach our goals for this session. We both study together
which has and will continue to be a huge benefit to the progress being made.
Our session is meant to be something innovative to EYP in a way. We want to
shift our focuss to themes and topics that may seem rarely discussed in these
events in order to reach a wider range of young people who may be afraid of
the word one word - politics. Our main theme is culture. With that said we are
going to put an accent on the diversity of it and the acceptance of it.Truthfully
the venue of the session speaks for itself being an art school which has also
been an important architecture landmark for Latvia in the past years. With the
human society changing rapidly we need to learn to adapt. Because at the end
of the day our shared values define us much more than our differences. And we
can only improve by adding something new to the already existing product.
With love,
Jānis Vēveris and Laura Polkmane,
PRESIDENTIAL VISION
FOR VP’S
Dear potential applicant,
Saldus 2018 will be a unique first-hand experience for the delegates acquiring the
opportunity to participate. With a five-day stretch for officials, four days for delegates, Saldus
2018 already constitutes the space for new and innovative approaches to the concept that
makes a regional session. The beautiful and architectural city of Saldus will in October
welcome approximately 80 delegates divided into six committees. I would now like to invite
you to form this experience together with me, either as Vice-President or Editor.
STRUCTURED PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
First and foremost, Saldus 2018 will be a platform for you, the Leadership, to
extensively contemplate, track and structure your own personal development for the
session at hand. Personal development in the context of EYP is nothing newly
emphasised on, though it is rarely tracked down and evaluated. A session process,
especially a long one, can often make it hard to pinpoint the gems of the experience.
In order for you to develop to the fullest in the position of Vice-President or Editor, it
is essential for you to continuously evaluate your previous experiences, as well as
Saldus 2018.
AN INDIVIDUAL-BASED SESSION
In the same tone as the above mentioned personal development, Saldus 2018 will
focus on the individual and both the academic and personal development of every
participant attending. The Vice-Presidents will work closely with two committees
respectively - actively helping each individual chair to pinpoint the gems of the
experience that will make their Saldus. The Vice-Presidents will manage one
academic and one ’emotional’ buddy group correlating to the two committees
provided - whilst me as the President instead will focus on the entirety of the team
and all the individuals constructing it.
The Leadership will together create a safe and stable environment for everyone
involved, where fears are overcomed and failure is welcomed with constructivism and
support rather than breakage.
INTERACTIVE ACADEMIC CONCEPT
Saldus 2018 will introduce a new, ’unconventional’ concept to the regional sessions
of EYP Latvia. With the reduction of the amount of committees from eight to six - the
three VP:s will be given the opportunity to full-heartedly focus on the chairs’ and their
academic and personal development. Moreover, you, as Vice-President, will together
with me, the President, outline the topics that you further will work with during the
session process in context of the academic buddy-groups.
Furthermore, in order to ensure that the delegates experience a thorough and
constructive first-hand experience with EYP, I believe that it is important to pursue an
environment where they not only receive an extensive preparation period - but also
that they during the session is provided with the appropriate time and tools to outlive
the educational aspect of both Committee Work and the General Assembly. Both
mentioned elements are usually rushed due to a lack of time, resulting in the delegates
mostly focusing on their topic alone, rather than learning from the overarching experience
that any academic concept seeks to provide. Therefore, I will introduce a interactive
academic concept for which the delegate’s experience can be outlived to its fullest
potential.
After the first day of Committee Work, the committees should be aimed to have
reached a ‘first draft’ on the resolutions. Similar to a ‘Lobby Event’, the delegates will
then have ‘Affection time’, where they present different constructive ideas to each
others’ resolutions, whilst also initiating discussions about their own topic/resolutions.
Day two of Committee Work will then create time for adjustments for the changes
presented during the affection time - and reach a final draft by lunch on day two of
Committee Work. The resolutions will then be ready quite early, which allows for
extensive GA-preparations. After each debate during the General Assembly, 5-10
minutes will be allocated to the responding committee to change/add to/remove an
existing clause - after which they will be able to present the culmination of the debate
in the ‘Debate Summary’, after which the ‘Rally Speech’ is to be held in regular order.
Ending the debates with amendment-time will also provide the General Assembly with
a sense of “having a purpose/end-game with the debate”, and hopefully help create a
constructive mindset for the delegates.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS
FOR EDITOR(S)
The Editor(s) will play a crucial role in implementing the above mentioned
vision, as well as the theme of the session. This role will also be crucial in order
to achieve my vision for a open and extensive inter-team cooperation. You will
therefore be welcomed with warm arms to cooperate with the both the chairs’-
and organising team before/during the session to together build a face for
Saldus 2018. While doing this, you, the Editor(s), will be provided with
complete freedom when it comes to developing a medial concept,
team-structure and output.
’Come and taste the culture’ will provide the session with a first-hand
experience in cultural-exchange through academic and social inquires. This
constitutes a lot of freedom for you to develop a theme expressing creativity
and cultural understanding. The rest of the vision for Saldus 2018, is for you to
construct.
Yours,
Gustav Dahlquist,
