Public Works Department <strong>SUMMER</strong> LAWN CARE A gorgeous home landscape doesn’t need to come at the price of clean lakes and streams we can have both. But to make it happen we all need to think a little differently. Read these tips and post this sheet in your garage near the lawnmower and garden tools. This will help us change one habit at a time, so we have good fishing, swimming, paddling and waterskiing when the work is done. Mowing: Mow often when the grass is 3.5 inches or shorter. Set your mower blade at 2.5 inches and let cuttings fall. Cuttings keep soil moist and restore nutrients over time. Any mower works, but a mulching mower shreds grass finely so you don’t have to be careful about grass height. A healthy mulched lawn out competes weeds for light, nutrients and water. § Make an effort not to blow cuttings onto pavement. If you do, sweep them up, then lay them around the roots of shrubs or vegetable plants where they help retain moisture. § If grass gets long and you decide to collect clippings, put them in a pile with other yard waste and let them decompose. Turn the pile now and then, and in 3-6 months you’ll have rich organic matter that will make almost anything in your yard grow better. Fertilizing: Chemicals and weed killers are not needed for a healthy lawn, and they are one of the main reasons we have green algae in our lakes and streams. Think before you buy. Get a soil test so you know if your lawn needs more nutrients. Mulch to keep your lawn healthy so it can out-compete weeds for light, nutrients and water. If you must fertilize, do it in the fall. Sweep up fertilizer that falls in the street and dispose of it properly – water and fertilizer that go into the street go directly to the river or lake. Watering: When watering is needed, use a sprinkler that shoots low to the ground. Sprinkle the soil, not the street. Shape soil so water will sink in, rather than run off. When you mow your lawn it is best to mulch cuttings to retain moisture. Renew our Waters: Rain, snowmelt and over watering of lawns along with the use of fertilizers and other chemicals flow into the street storm sewers that empty in the local waterways. The storm water should be retained to lawns to allow the soils to act as a filtering system to reduce the pollutants from entering the groundwater. REMINDER: · IT IS ILLEGAL TO DEPOSIT GRASS & LEAVES INTO <strong>CITY</strong> STREETS & STORM GUTTERS. This includes the blowing of grass or leaves with a lawnmower or leaf blower. City Ordinance 8>0112(a). Remove grass and other lawn trimmings that may have fallen into the storm gutter system. This debris plugs the city storm sewers, causing flooding issues during rain events. · THE ONLY THING YOU SHOULD POUR DOWN A STORM SEWER IS WATER. DUMP NO WASTE!!! With spring here, and summer right around the corner, please remember to use caution when applying any type of chemical to your lawn near the storm gutters. A yard waste and brush drop off site is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Drop off will be located at the City of Marinette Garage, 2411 Cleveland Avenue. NO OTHER ITEMS WILL BE ALLOWED AT THIS DROP OFF SITE. CAMERAS WILL BE IN USE AT THE DROP OFF SITE AND VIOLATORS WILL BE PROSECUTED.
Menekaunee Old Timers Picnic The 40th annual Menekaunee Old Timers Picnic will be held at noon on July 28 at Red Arrow Park's enclosed pavilion for anyone 50 years or older with ties to Menekaunee. Attendees should bring lawn chairs and beverage. Cost is $10 if paid by July 23 or $15 if paid later. Checks should be made payable and sent to Menekaunee Old Timers, 160 W Bay Shore St., Marinette, WI 54143. Phone Sharon at 715-735-5577 with questions. Let the reminiscing begin! Marinette Fire Department The Marinette Fire Department wants everyone to have a SAFE and Happy Fourth of July. If your July Fourth celebration will include fireworks, please refer to Marinette Municipal Code 5.0217 C and G for guidance on fireworks items that are allowed to be displayed. Fireworks that shoot projectiles or leave the ground are prohibited. Children should be supervised at all times and only adults should light fireworks. Use extreme caution with sparklers, especially those with the metal wires. Sparklers burn extremely hot and the wires will cause burns I handled incorrectly. These should be placed in a bucket of water to cool them down (preferably over night away from combustibles) and the disposed of properly. If you sustain a burn, cool the affected area with cool water until the burning stops and seek medical attention if needed. Be courteous to neighbors and clean up the debris after the fun, again placing them in a non-combustible container until they cool and then disposing of properly. On July 18, 19, and 20 firefighters will be at the intersection of Hall Ave. and Hattie St. for the annual MDA Fill-the-Boot campaign. Money raised through the generous donations from motorists and pedestrians goes to area recipients to pay for care, MDA camps, and other items that kids struggling with muscular dystrophy need. Please use CAUTION and patients when passing through this area as motorists slow or stop to make their donations. Every attempt is made by our firefighters to collect donations on red lights but some motorist do slow or stop on green lights. We thank you in advance for your generous donations and patients. If you have questions or would like to donate please contact us at 715-732-5170. Thank you. National Night Out Tuesday, August 7, 2018 from 4-8pm on Stephenson Island, Marinette. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August (Texas celebrates on the first Tuesday in October). Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more.
