Cover Story 

Al Cook: 29 Years as LCSC Workforce Training Instructor 

When Al Cook instructed his first group of electrical apprentices in 1989 for Workforce Training, the 

Oscar for Best Picture went to “Rain Man.” The number one song on the Billboard Top 100 list was 

“Miss You Much,” by Janet Jackson, and the San Francisco 49’ers had just won their third Super 

Bowl. Twenty-nine years later, Al is teaching his last group of apprentices and his knowledge and 

experience will be greatly missed. 

In nearly three decades as an instructor, Al touched the lives of over 900 students. His dedication 

didn’t end in the classroom, he tutored many students in his own home, helping them through the 

struggles of load calculations and wiring diagrams. Al’s love for his fellow man extends beyond 

the classroom as he volunteers his time to build homes for Habitat for Humanity. His legacy is 

highlighted by the fact that one of his former students is now an instructor in the apprentice program 

at Workforce Training. 

Al is moving on to new challenges, using his Master Electrician license to help with the family 

business, Cook Brothers Electric. He and his wife Bev have some traveling to do, which will no 

doubt include a few rounds of golf. Thank you Al, for your dedication to the electrical trade, and 

decades of mentoring generations of journeyman electricians. And Al…remember to keep that two 

iron shot low and straight.

Assistance with Medications 

Online/On Campus 

Assistance with Medications is 

designed to teach unlicensed 

assistive personnel in Idaho 

who are delegated by a nurse, 

with assisting with medications 

for individuals in their home 

or group facility. This newly 

developed hybrid class is open 

to any person who would benefit 

from the additional knowledge 

provided and is taught through a 

combination of online and handson 

training. Assistance with 

Medications can be provided as a 

custom course for facilities. Basic

On Campus 

A Certified Nursing Assistant, or 

CNA, helps people with basic 

healthcare and daily needs under 

the supervision of a licensed 

nurse. The job market for a CNA 

offers many opportunities for 

employment in the health field. 

On campus CNA students must 

complete 80 hours of classroom 

instruction and skill labs, plus 

attend 40 hours of clinical training 

at facilities in our local region. 

Upon successful completion of 

this course, students must pass 

required skill and written exams 

to be placed on the Idaho CNA 

Registry. Exam fees are not

Cleaning Chemicals 

(Part 1 of the Janitorial 

Apprenticeship Program) 

10 hour course that covers the safe 

use of common industrial chemicals 

used in a custodial setting. It 

includes the OSHA Hazard 

Communication Standard. You will 

learn the basic chemistry of cleaning 

chemicals. Learn the correct use 

of detergents, soaps, solvents, 

disinfectants and other industrial 

chemical applications. Learn how 

chemicals are packaged, labeled, 

mixed and applied in order to make 

working with chemicals safer for all 

employees and trainees.

Maintaining Floors and Other 

Surfaces 



10 hour course that describes and 

demonstrates the tasks involved 

in the routine daily maintenance 

of floors in public and professional

describe the particular methods 

used on the various floors and

Certification is required in most 

states to work as traffic control

flagger certification valid for 3 years. 

This certification is recognized in

Flagging Traffic Control 

Certification (ATSSA) 

in Grangeville 

Certification is required in most states 

to work as traffic control personnel 

on roadways. This six-hour class 

will teach you how to be a safe and 

effective flagger within work zones. 

Upon successful completion of this 

training and exam, you will receive 

a registered flagger certification 

valid for 3 years. This certification 

is recognized in Idaho, Montana, 

and Utah. (Students should check 

with their local jurisdiction as to 

the acceptability of ATSSA flagger 

certification.) Must be 18 years of

Apprenticeship Programs 

Your work no longer has to be unfulfilling. LCSC Workforce Training 

offers an exciting career path. By completing the 4 year Idaho required 

instructional course of study for Electrical, HVAC or Plumbing, you will 

be well on your way. These apprenticeship programs are offered in the 

classroom or by distance learning for individuals who live in rural areas. 

It is highly recommended, though not required, for students participating 

in the course work to already be employed in the trade to complete the 

Idaho required on-the-job training hours needed to test for the journeyman 

license. Registration for these apprenticeship programs is now open. 

Spring fees have a $15 additional charge for mandatory electronic testing 

which will take place at the end of the semester. This electronic testing 

has been mandated by the state for YR’s 1 – 3. Year 4 students will not be 

taking this type of exam.
