Cassidy’s Story

Being a single mother is hard, and one who is in college is even harder! I did both of those things

and was stuck between a rock and a hard spot. I needed a way that I didn’t have to work terribly

long retail hours just to get by while in college classes. I was studying for my social work degree

and I was losing motivation fast. I realized I had to work and needed to get a great job so I could

pay off my student loans as I went. The strenuous, long hours I had while working retail, made it

almost impossible to see my 2-year-old little boy, go to school and study. I decided I was going to

get a better paying job with better hours to work around my schedule to put my family and studying

first. That is when I discovered the Workforce Training catalog in Sacajawea Hall. Someone told

me that Workforce Training might offer dental assistant certifications and I was in! My two favorite

things are dental and social work. I registered immediately, and the class flew by. Lots of learning in

a very short time period and working in the clinical area developing and learning while using hands

on skills made a world of a difference. It wasn’t just textbook work; they really do prepare for the

real thing. I immediately got a part job in the dental field, and can go back to school resting easy,

knowing I am making enough that I don’t feel I’m living paycheck to paycheck. I have a security net

and my son never has to go without as long as I keep myself goal-oriented and push myself.

I am beyond grateful I found Workforce Training when I did. I was at the point I was going to flunk

out, due to my son’s medical and behavioral issues and everything that was being thrown at me. I

can say I now have a newfound confidence due to this program. Thank you very much Workforce

Training and everyone who pushes you to work harder and do better. Now I’m a Certified Dental

Assistant and will have these skills to carry with me because I bit the bullet and took a four-week

class! My son and I are thriving and doing spectacular. I can’t wait until I return to school and finish

up my social work degree. With this training I can do so without breaking my bank, and my back!

God bless you!

Apprenticeship Programs

Apprentice programs are primarily for those people working in the following trades, Electrical, HVAC and

Plumbing. These programs deliver the related instruction, as regulated by the state of Idaho (Idaho Division

of Building Safety). Related instruction is delivered in the classroom, or through an online/hybrid format for

those people living/working in the rural locations within our region.

Apprenticeships are a method of learning where the trainee receives on-the-job training from their employer,

while studying the theories and specifics of their trade through related instruction provided by technical

colleges or schools. In Idaho, apprentices are required to have a minimum of 2,000 on-the-job training hours

and a minimum of 144 hours of related instruction per year. After completing four (4) years of training, the

apprentice can sit for the Idaho Journeyman’s exam. Upon passing the exam, the apprentice is licensed in

Idaho as a journeyman of their trade.

Apprenticeships

State of Washington students – Apprenticeship programs report related instruction hours and pass/fail

records to the Idaho Division of Building and Safety only. We do not report to Washington, as Idaho is the

regulating authority for Idaho apprenticeships. We do report related instruction and hours to Washington for

related instruction for our Idaho students who also are holders of a Washington Basic card. We are

authorized providers for basic classroom instruction.

Second (Spring) semester for Electrical, HVAC and Plumbing have a $40 added fee for mandatory State of

Idaho testing, which is proctored online through the LCSC Testing Center.

1st year Plumbing, Electrical, and HVAC Apprenticeships registration fee is $575 for fall semester and $615

for spring semester. All other years pay $575 (2021 only).

• Other costs: Books and other learning materials are the responsibility of the student(s) to obtain.

A book and materials list are provided at the time of registration.

Electrical Online Classes – Electrical Apprentice, online classes are offered to meet the needs of students

who live/work in rural area, and cannot attend classroom delivery. It is highly recommended that electrical

apprentices attend instruction in the classroom, because electrical instruction has many math concepts which

are new to most students.

Registration Deadline: No registrations will be accepted after 12/31/2020, because coursework is sent to the

printers, based on student registration count.
