An Introduction
I own a hydrotherapy center
for dogs in the Netherlands
and also host many
mantrailing events in the
Netherlands, Germany and
further on in Europe as a
mantrailing trainer. Dogs are
an integral part of my
private and professional life.
My Mantrailing Dogs
Currently I have three
mantrailing dogs, of which
one is ready for call-outs (a
bloodhound), one is a
retired mantrailer
(cross-breed), and one, my
puppy Mara, is on her way
too be a mantrailer (Cros
Malinois X BGS)
My Background
I am the founder of the
search and rescue group
Stichting Mantrailgroep
Nederland, where I am the
team leader for call-outs,
instructor, and actively
training member with three
of my own dogs. I began as
a search and rescue handler
(area, water and rubble
searches) in 1998, and was a
member of a number of
organisations in the
Netherlands.
In 2001, I became aware of
the mantrailing instruction
provided by Tom
Middlemas in Scotland,
where I visited him and
trained regularly. In 2004 I
began practicing
mantrailing, initially alone
with my own dogs and
some friends (other
SAR-people) because
mantrailing was unknown in
Europe at the time. Later
we founded a SAR-group
specialised in mantrailing.
With this group we did a lot
of call-outs in cooperation
with the Dutch Police
Service and other
SAR-groups.
In order to broaden and
deepen my knowledge, I
attended numerous
seminars with various
internationally renowned
trainers and have trained a
number of dogs. Some of
the trainers were: (2004-
2017) from the USA: like,
Kevin Kocher, Marshall
Thielen, John Salem, Jeff
Schettler etc. and some of
the leading European
trainers Glenn Poole and
Tom Middlemas. Since 2013
I have been teaching
mantrailing to share my
knowledge and help others
to train their own dogs
honestly and credibly.
My vision of mantrailing is clear:
Mantrailing is serious work – people’s lives depend on it!
You are taking on a huge responsibility to the missing person, but also to their family and friends,
as well as to the organisation that has asked for your help.
So trust your dog, but don’t follow your dog blindly only because your dog moves in that
direction - do it wisely because you are able to read his body language
Be honest to yourself and your dog and don’t guide your dog, because you wanted to be famous!
Hope I can help you a little with honest training, so you and your dog can be useful to find missing
people or finding criminals.
